Nokia Expands its AirScale Portfolio

Nokia announced its AirScale RNC - a cloud-based 3G radio network controller.

The product is in trials and will be commercially available during the first quarter of 2017.

Nokia is also extending its portfolio of ultra-lean and efficient AirScale radios. New radios supporting additional paired and unpaired frequency bands will meet more operators' multiple technology radio access network demands:

  • Nokia AirScale RRH 4T4R B40 160W for 2300 MHz (Band 40), with the highest transmit power in its category at 160W, can provide support for up to 100 MHz of unpaired spectrum and will allow operators in parts of the globe, including China, India, the Middle East and Africa, Europe and North America, to grow network capacity and data rates massively with 4.5G Pro.
  • Nokia AirScale RRH 2T2R B28 120W for the Asia Pacific Telecommunity band (APT) 700 MHz (Band 28) supporting operators in parts of the world including India, Asia Pacific, Latin America and Europe. This thinnest full-band radio at 73mm offers world-leading macro site compactness, allowing network coverage to be dramatically extended to close the digital divide and acting as a foundation for multiband carrier aggregation of 4.5G Pro.
  • Nokia AirScale RRH 2T2R B11 120W for 1500 MHz (Band 11) is available in the advanced market of Japan. With the lowest power consumption and highest transmit power of 120 W, it will enable the lowest total cost of ownership for Japanese operators as they expand their networks with coverage and capacity for 4.5G Pro.
  • The new Nokia Services portfolio for the AirScale Cloud RAN and AirFrame Data Center will assist operators in accelerating the planning, design, roll-out and operations of their cloud-based radio access networks.

"The journey to 5G can be smoothed by choosing the right technology path. With 4.5G Pro and cloud-based radio access networks, operators can leverage scalability and flexibility as they start to provide 5G-like use cases on top of LTE, taking user experience to the next level. Also, with prime examples such as the launch of the first true cloud-based RNC and the expansion of our AirScale radios and services portfolio, we are showing that Nokia is leading in this space, enabling customers to evolve in the most cost-effective and timely way," stated Frank Weyerich, head of Mobile Networks Products at Nokia.

Mushroom Networks Advances its SD-WAN with VNF Studio

Mushroom Networks introduced VNF (Virtual Network Function) Design Studio software, a curated library of modular, drag-and-drop components to help service providers and large enterprises build their software-defined WANS.  The software helps admin optimize their WAN and the performance of their cloud services for their organization’s specific needs and application traffic profile.

Mushroom Networks, which supplies a range of Broadband Bonding solutions, said its new VNF Design Studio, Mushroom Networks makes virtual network functions available on an "a la carte" basis. For example, a CIO can have a VNF that dynamically and automatically steers VOIP/SIP traffic around network problems caused by high latency, jitter and packet loss, and in parallel have another VNF to support cross-traffic and latency optimization for “chatty” applications.

“In the era of distributed computing and the software-defined data center, the bottleneck for cloud services at the enterprise branch office has become the WAN. And for organizations that are relying on mission-critical cloud services over a distributed geography, ensuring the performance of those services is paramount,” said Cahit Akin, founder and CEO of Mushroom Networks. “VNF Design Studio extends the programmability benefits of the software-defined data center all the way to the branch office. Our VNF Design Studio gives network admins even more flexibility and power by enabling them to very easily and quickly create custom WAN overlays specific to their own requirements.”

NVIDIA Advances its Pascal-based GPUs for AI

NVIDIA is expanding its Pascal™ architecture-based deep learning platform with the introduction of new Tesla P4 and P40 GPU accelerators and new software. The solution is aimed at accelerating inferencing production workloads for artificial intelligence services, such as voice-activated assistance, email spam filters, and movie and product recommendation engines.

NVIDIA said its GPU are better at these tasks than current CPU-based technology, which isn't capable of delivering real-time responsiveness. The Tesla P4 and P40 are specifically designed for inferencing, which uses trained deep neural networks to recognize speech, images or text in response to queries from users and devices.

Based on the Pascal architecture, these GPUs feature specialized inference instructions based on 8-bit (INT8) operations, delivering 45x faster response than CPUs and a 4x improvement over GPU solutions launched less than a year ago.

With 47 tera-operations per second (TOPS) of inference performance with INT8 instructions, a server with eight Tesla P40 accelerators can replace the performance of more than 140 CPU servers.5 At approximately $5,000 per CPU server, this results in savings of more than $650,000 in server acquisition cost.

"With the Tesla P100 and now Tesla P4 and P40, NVIDIA offers the only end-to-end deep learning platform for the data center, unlocking the enormous power of AI for a broad range of industries," said Ian Buck, general manager of accelerated computing at NVIDIA. "They slash training time from days to hours. They enable insight to be extracted instantly. And they produce real-time responses for consumers from AI-powered services."

Inphi Intros 400GbE PAM4 for Next-Gen CFP8 Modules

Inphi announced a 400GbE platform solution for next-generation 400G CFP8 modules.

The solution uses Inphi's highly integrated, lowest power 4-level Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM4) digital signal processing (DSP) IC, which supports IEEE P802.3bs 400G/s Ethernet standard alongside its linear TIAs and linear drivers for client based cloud interconnects.

Inphi said its the foundation of its 400G PAM4 PHY IC is a highly configurable and DSP Engine that can be targeted to multiple different performance oriented applications for optical based interconnects, while keeping an extremely low power profile.

The solution multiple channels along with transmit and receive PAM4 and forward error correction (FEC) functions on a single package.

UNH-IOL Offers 25G Ethernet Testing

The University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) is now offering 25 Gigabit (25G) Ethernet Testing Services at its state-of-the-art facility.

“As campus, data center and cloud deployments begin to accelerate the adoption of 25 Gb/s technology, it’s critical to have an effective, vendor-agnostic means of testing interoperability and compliance against applicable 25G and 50 Gigabit (50G) Ethernet specifications,” said Brad Booth, Chair, 25G/50G Ethernet Consortium. “UNH-IOL’s full suite of testing services will reduce the barrier of marketplace adoption with the new generation of 25G and 50G Ethernet devices.”

“25G is already entering the marketplace; however, as deployments occur, issues with untested and non-compatible devices are appearing,” said UNH-IOL Enterprise Industry and Operations Strategic Manager, Jeffrey Lapak. “The UNH-IOL 25G Ethernet Testing Services are the best and most comprehensive way to demonstrate product interoperability and conformance to industry standards, showing customers that devices are ready for deployment into the market.”
