Proxxima Telecom deploys Padtec dual 400 Gb/s transponders

Proxxima Telecom, a telecommunications service provider of Paraíba (Brazil), is deploying Padtec’s new line of dual 400 Gbps transponders for its new DWDM network connecting the municipalities of Campina Grande, in Paraíba, and Caruaru, in Pernambuco.

Proxxima Telecom intends to expand the service offerings and its customer base in this region and to later expand its operations to other neighboring cities and states. 

“To accomplish this, we intend to continue counting on Padtec’s partnership, which has also helped us in planning the investment necessary to expand our network”, says Leonardo Gomes, CEO of Proxxima. He also emphasizes the quality of service and the agility of Padtec’s support areas as important differentials offered by the company.

The new generation of Padtec transponders features flexible pluggable network interfaces, with up to 400 Gbps of transmission capacity (based on CFP2-DCO). 

“With this, we combine greater performance of the optical channels with the gradual expansion capacity of the network, according to the growth in demand and the performance of providers in the market”, emphasizes Argemiro Sousa, Business Director at Padtec. Another highlight is the product’s compatibility with the three shelf models of the LightPad Platform (with 2, 4 and 14RU height), supporting applications of different capacities in short, medium and long distance networks.

In addition, Padtec’s new line of 400 Gb/s transponders can also be financed through credit lines offered by the company to providers, of different sizes, throughout Brazil. Padtec offers the market financing options through BNDES, FIDC with the Sifra group, Finep (branch of investments in technology and innovation of the federal government), “vendor financing” with private banks and “forfait” operations for international sales.

Padtec creates board position for solutions, platforms and telecom services

 Padtec has appointed Alexandre Piovesan to a new board position dedicated to the area of solutions, platforms and telecommunications services. The purpose is to make the services unit even more strategic in the company, with a function dedicated specifically to the development of platforms and complete solutions for the telecommunications sector, in order to monitor – and even anticipate –market evolution.

Brazil's Forte Telecom upgrades to 800G transponders with Padtec

Forte Telecom, a carrier of carriers in Rio de Janeiro, is upgrading its backbone with 800 Gbps transponders from Padtec. 

The upgraded infrastructure will cover  thousands of kilometers in the stretches between the capitals of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo and in the metropolitan region of Rio, reaching a total transmission capacity of 8 Tbps.

For the expansion, the provider used a credit line from the credit rights investment fund (FIDC) launched by Padtec together with BNDES Participações (BNDESPar) in 2021, which uses resources from the Fund for the Technological Development of Telecommunications (FUNTTEL)  from the Ministry of Communications. The objective, in this case, is to facilitate access to capital resources by small and medium-sized Brazilian industries operating in the telecommunications sector.

For Sérgio Simas, Forte Telecom’s CEO, one of the main advantages of this generation of transponders is to combine high data transmission capacity and less equipment, reducing the cost per transmitted bit – as well as energy and space consumption, which are scarce in telecommunications environments. “This meets our objective of building a high-performance network to evolve our service offering and respond quickly and flexibly to the constant changes in the data traffic profile resulting from the growing demand for broadband”, he says.

Carlos Raimar, Padtec’s CEO, emphasizes that the offer of different credit options reinforces the company’s commitment to the success and growth of its customers. “For some years now, Padtec has been dedicating efforts to make the expansion of the networks of regional operators financially viable”, he says. “The lines of credit bring new options of resources for investments in the expansion of its operations, as well as in the increase of the capacity and quality of its networks, in order to support the growth of demand in the time that its business and its customers demand”, adds Raimar.

NEC Brasil appoints José Renato de Mello Gonçalves as president

NEC has appointed José Renato de Mello Gonçalves as president of the company in Brazil. 

Gonçalves served for over eight years at Orange Business Services, where he became vice-president of operations in Latin America, a position he held for the last four and a half years. Previously, he was an executive working in the Brazilian operation of Verizon Business and Nortel, always focused on business, in leadership positions in the commercial area of ​​these companies.

FiBrasil partners with Padtec on Network Operations Center

FiBrasil, a Brazilian operator of neutral networks, has formed a partnership with Padtec focused on managing the operation of its communication networks in Brazil. The services include monitoring and technical support through Padtec’s Network Operations Center (NOC).

Located at its headquarters in Campinas, in the interior of São Paulo, Padtec’s NOC offers remote network monitoring and support services, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Services are provided by specialized technicians who have an advanced infrastructure, with resources such as dual approach fiber optic routes,  fire protection systems, UPS and generators to ensure uninterrupted operation in the event of a power failure, and a disaster recovery plan that allows for fully remote operation. All this with the capability of defining service level agreements (SLAs) suited to the needs and requirements – as well as the investment capacity – of each provider.

Padtec’s NOC service (contracted by FiBrasil) is part of the company’s business unit, which currently has 40 points of presence distributed throughout Brazil, Argentina and Colombia. The objective is to help and boost the business of providers operating in the broadband market by optimizing the resources of their networks.

FiBrasil is a joint venture that works in the construction, operation and commercialization of a neutral fiber optic network for internet providers and telecommunications operators who wish to expand their coverage throughout Brazil. Brazil's AdylNet picks Padtec for optical backbone

AdylNet, a telecommunications service provider in Rio Grande do Sul with an optical network of more than 22,000 kilometers, has adopted  Padtec’s line of 800 Gbps transponders (up to 400 Gbps per optical channel) for an optical backbone linking the capitals of São Paulo, Curitiba, Florianópolis and Porto Alegre and cities from the interior of Rio Grande do Sul. 

Based in Nova Prata (RS), AdylNet currently serves more than 50,000 residential, corporate and wholesale (ISP) users. The decision to modernize its network infrastructure is part of the company’s strategy to meet – with quality – the growing demands for bandwidth and new services in the regions where it operates. 

Padtec’s LightPad i6400G platform’s 800 Gbps line of transponders allows transmitting extremely high data rates over short to long distances in terrestrial and underwater DWDM networks.

Brazil’s Mob Telecom deploys 800G with Ciena

Mob Telecom (Mob), part of Mobwire hub which provides internet and broadband in Brazil and is owned by Alloha Fibra group, has deployed Ciena’s Waveserver 5 platform, powered by WaveLogic 5 Extreme coherent optics. 

This network enhancement delivers high-bandwidth connectivity, scaling up to 800 Gbps per channel, across several data centers and four cable landing stations in Fortaleza, Brazil. The provider is also utilizing Ciena’s 6500 photonic line system leveraging L0 control plane with photonic restoration to significantly improve network resiliency, increase service availability and offer a variety of differentiated services. Additionally, Ciena’s Manage, Control and Plan (MCP) domain controller provides real-time visibility and intelligent network control of the company’s network to simplify lifecycle operations and accelerate service deployment.

Parallel Wireless conducts Open RAN field trial in Brazil

Parallel Wireless is partnering with Inatel, Telecom Infra Project (TIP), Brisanet, Claro, TIM, and Vivo to conduct an Open RAN field trial throughout Brazil and other LATAM countries.   

Inatel - National Institute of Telecommunications is an education, research, and technology development center created in 1965 and located in Santa Rita do Sapucaí, southern Minas Gerais, also known as the Electronics Valley. It was the first institution of higher education in Telecommunications Engineering in Brazil.

Parallel Wireless will provide an Open RAN network enabling All Gs (2G, 3G, 4G and 5G) utilizing Band 7 for the trial. The setup in test has Comba and Dell Technologies solutions. Mobile Network Operators Brisanet, Claro, TIM and Vivo are partners in the Open Field program.

IHS Towers to acquire 2,115 towers in Brazil for US$315M

IHS Towers agreed to acquire 2,115 telecommunication towers across Brazil from São Paulo Cinco Locação de Torres Ltda. (SP5), a Grupo Torresur (“GTS”) portfolio company. The acquisition is expected to deliver Revenue and Adjusted EBITDA of approximately US$38 million and US$36 million, respectively, in the first full year following closing (based on a current exchange rate). The purchase price of the transaction, on a cash and debt free basis, is US$315 million.

Proforma for closing this portfolio, IHS Towers will own approximately 7,000 towers in Brazil, in addition to the secondary fiber network covering approximately 6.4 million homes passed that it currently operates.

Padtec teams up with Airspan and Trópico on 5G Open RAN

Padtec has formed a partnership with Trópico and Airspan Networks to offer 5G network solutions in several spectrum bands, including 700 MHz, 2.3 GHz, 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz.

Padtec said the recent successful auction of 5G spectrum in Brazil will spur a wave of investments in telecom infrastructure to support the next-generation of high-bandwidth applications and services driven by 5G networks. The goal of the three companies is to collaborate to provide end-to-end hardware and software solutions to established telecom operators as well new entrants, providing the tools to support the increasing demand for data traffic on their networks which will result from the widespread adoption of 5G.

Brazil's G8 deploys Infinera for long-haul DWDM

G8 Telecommunications (G8), which operates long-haul and regional networks in Brazil, has deployed Infinera’s GX Series Compact Modular Platform on its long-haul DWDM network to increase network capacity to meet the growing needs of enterprises, network operators, and government companies. 

G8 has more than 3,000 km of fiber across statess including São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Goiás, Minas Gerais, and Bahia.

Infinera’s GX G30 platform can be deployed with a 1.2 terabit transponder with individual channels up to 600 Gbps per lambda and the ability to scale to 2.4 terabits in a single rack unit. Infinera says its compact modular solution enables G8 to rapidly modernize its network infrastructure to quickly deliver high optical performance on demand.

Padtec records best quarter in 5 year as DWDM sales soar

Padtec reported gross operating revenue of R$205.7 million for the first half of 2021 representing a growth of 63.7% compared to the same period last year. In the second quarter of the year, operating revenue totaled R$ 119.6 million – an increase of 38.8% compared to the first quarter of 2021, and an increase of 86.3% compared to the same period last year. 

It was the company’s best quarterly result in the last five years, contributing to its good performance in the half-year and realizing the growth ambitions of its operations in Brazil and abroad.

Notably, DWDM  recorded a growth of 75.6% in its revenue in the first six months, compared to the same period in 2020. 

In the first half of the year, Padtec also recorded an improvement in EBITDA, with earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of R$ 36 million – triple the amount recorded in the same period in 2020. Adjusted EBTIDA (that disregards non-recurring events) reached R$ 21.1 million, with a margin of 13.6% – an increase of 9 percentage points. Gross margin was 35.5% (an increase of 3 percentage points), maintaining the same level as in recent quarters and reinforcing the profitability of the company’s businesses despite the exchange rate fluctuation between the periods.

Padtec's Q2 revenues rise 39% on strong DWDM growth

Padtec reported Q2 2021 operating revenue totaled R$ 119.6 million – an increase of 38.8% compared to the first quarter of 2021, and an increase of 86.3% compared to the same period last year. It was the company’s best quarterly result in the last five years.

For the first half of 2021, the company reported gross operating revenue of R$ 205.7 million, an amount that represents a growth of 63.7% compared to the same period last year. 

Padtec said its DWDM sales recorded a growth of 75.6% in the first six months, compared to the same period in 2020.

Brazil's Mercantil bank connects data centers with Padtec DWDM

Banco Mercantil do Brasil is increasing the transmission capacity of its DWDM networks in Belo Horizonte using a solution provided by Padtec.

Padtec supplied transponders and route protection systems to connect the bank's data centers in Belo Horizonte. The project’s technical highlight is the use of the family of 200 Gbps transponders developed by the company for the transport of multiple 16 Gb/s data channels, in a network protocol called Fiber Channel, which is suitable for interconnect applications between servers and data storage systems.

The partnership between the companies also includes the provision of services, by Padtec, for managing the operation and maintenance of the Mercantil do Brasil bank’s optical networks.

Telxius activates Brazil - Argentina subsea cable

Telxius announced that the new Tannat submarine cable, connecting Santos (Brazil) with Las Toninas (Argentina), is now open for service. 

Tannat is a 2,000 kilometer new generation system adds to the Brusa and Junior cables on the Atlantic coast of Latin America to deliver the most modern and diverse end-to-end connectivity between the U.S., Brazil and Argentina. The new cable completes a main connectivity route between the U.S. and key hubs in South America as a continuation of Brusa (Virginia Beach – Rio de Janeiro) and Junior (Rio de Janeiro – Santos). Brusa has a capacity of 160 Tbps, with the highest capacity direct connection between the U.S. and South America and one of the highest in the world. Brusa connects Rio de Janeiro and Fortaleza in Brazil, San Juan in Puerto Rico and Virginia Beach, U.S. via an 11,000 km, ultra-low-latency submarine cable. SAm-1, the 25,000 km subsea cable ring that surrounds Latin America, provides additional route diversity. With the combination of these four cables, Telxius offers outstanding diverse and robust subsea network routes in Latin America.

Telxius' Mistral cable lands in Peru

Telxius confirmed that its South Pacific Submarine Cable (SPSC) or ‘Mistral’ cable has landed in Peru.

The Mistral project, carried out jointly by Claro and Telxius and supplied by Subcom, has required a significant investment for the deployment of approximately 7,300 kilometers of state-of-the-art  fiber optic submarine cable, which provides greater transmission capacity (72 Tbps) and redundancy to Peru. This is the first new submarine cable to Peru in nearly 20 years.

The cable is expected to be ready for service by mid-2021.

Additionally, Telxius has six more cables connecting Latin America, three of them new generation cables: SAm-1, a 25,000 km fiber-optic cable ring circumnavigating Latin America; and on the Atlantic coast, Brusa, a 11,000-km submarine cable system linking Virginia Beach (USA) with San Juan (Puerto Rico), Fortaleza (Brazil) and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil); Junior, which takes over from Brusa in Rio de Janeiro and connects with Santos (Brazil), and Tannat, linking Santos with Las Toninas (Argentina). Also, the Pacific Caribbean Cable System (PCCS), which runs from Ecuador to Jacksonville (Florida) and lastly, Unisur, which links Las Toninas (Argentina) with Maldonado (Uruguay).

IBM Cloud launches Multizone Region in Brazil

 IBM Cloud launched its first Multizone Region (MZR) in Brazil.

IBM Cloud MZRs are composed of three or more data center zones with each being an Availability Zone. This is designed so that a single failure event can affect only a single data center rather than all zones – allowing for consistent cloud services and greater resiliency. Clients hosting workloads on IBM Cloud MZRs in any country can continuously run mission-critical workloads to keep business up and running.


IBM said the new MZR is a result of its continued investment in cloud infrastructure to accelerate hybrid cloud adoption and help foster business growth in Latin America. Following the openings of Toronto and Osaka last year, the latest MZR in Brazil marks IBM's ongoing commitment to help clients across the globe deploy mission-critical workloads with high levels of security and resilience, while helping to address data sovereignty requirements and prepare for a sustainable future.

EllaLink completes Portugal-Brazil cable, picks Infinera's ICE6 coherent tech

EllaLink completed the marine installation of its trans-Atlantic cable system between Europe and Latin America.

EllaLink has selected Infinera's ICE6 800G coherent technology to light the network, providing a direct single hop transmission path between data centers in each continent. Infinera’s solution will enable EllaLink to offer advanced customer products and services, supporting over 100 Tbps between Portugal and Brazil. Furthermore, the network will support a 30-Tbps link from Portugal to Madeira, with an additional 40-Tbps path between Portugal and Morocco in the future.

Ellalink will use Infinera’s GX Series Compact Modular Platform to provide its customers with low-latency services in a single hop between endpoints. EllaLink also plans to use ICE6 to bolster the capacity on its long-haul terrestrial network between Sines, Lisbon, Madrid, and Marseille. Future network expansions will enable EllaLink to extend its submarine network to French Guiana, Mauritania, the Canary Islands, and Morocco, resulting in the most advanced submarine system connecting Africa, Europe, and Latin America.

Infinera also highlighted the unique innovations in Infinera’s ICE6 technology, such as long-codeword probabilistic constellation shaping (LC-PCS) and intelligent power management.

Nokia teams with Brazil's Telecom R&D center on Open RAN

Nokia is working with Brazil’s Telecommunications Research and Development Center (CPQD), an independent government-affiliated research body, to jointly develop applications and solutions based on the Open RAN (O-RAN) compliant near-real-time RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC). 

The RIC is a virtualized 5G optimization technology that adds programmability to the Radio Access Network (RAN) and enables artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) as well as new services. It provides a framework for deploying applications from multiple sources. The near-real-time RIC platform provides functions and interfaces that boost optimization, automation, and faster, more flexible service deployments.

Nokia said the collaboration will leverage its Service Enablement Platform (SEP), which combines the capabilities of the RIC and multi-access edge computing (MEC).

Use cases include fixed wireless access (FWA), smart cities, IoT for Industry 4.0, and critical networks, which will be customized for the Brazilian market.

Brazil's Softdados rolls with Infinera for metro and long-haul networks

Softdados has deployed Infinera’s GX Series Compact Modular Platform and XTM Series across its metro and long-haul networks to increase network capacity to meet the growing needs of internet service providers (ISPs) in Brazil. Arsitec serves as Infinera's local partner.

Infinera said its solutions enable Softdados to significantly enhance the capabilities of its network and offer customers a variety of high-capacity internet services with agility and security. The deployment provides a seamless upgrade path to Infinera’s 800G Infinite Capacity Engine technology.

Brazil's Oi mobile acquired in auction by Telefónica, TIM, Claro

Telefónica, TIM, Claro have teamed up to acquire the mobile operations of Brazil’s Oi SA for 16.5 billion reais (US$3.23 billion). 

Oi, which is the largest fixed operator and the fourth largest mobile operator in Brazil, auctioned off its mobile assets as part of bankruptcy proceedings.

Telefónica Brasil, which currently serves 77 million customers, will pay roughly 5.57 billion reais. TIM will pay approximately 7.7 billion reais. Claro will pay 3.6 billion reais.

Oi has previously disclosed plans to accelerate its fiber broadband strategy.
