Telegent Announces Design Wins for Mobile TV

Malata, a top 50 China consumer electronics company, has selected Telegent Systems' television-on-a-chip solution for a mini-TV design. Malata's mini-TV is the first standalone TV+FM consumer electronics product based on Telegent's technology, enabling consumers to receive the same live television broadcasts that they view on larger conventional TV sets, while on the go.


Malata's mini-TV is a portable television with a screen size of 2.4, 2.8 or 3.0 inches, supporting global analog television standards NTSC, PAL and SECAM.


Telegent said its TLG1120 television-on-a-chip enables the mini-TV to deliver superior picture quality and low-power consumption under mobile and portable conditions.


In addition, MobilMAX, a Taiwanese ODM, has incorporated Telegent's analog mobile TV receiver into two CDMA TV handset designs that were recently launched. With these designs, MobilMAX brings together its expertise in CDMA and GSM technologies and operator-grade solutions with a free-to-air TV feature that enables consumers to view the same live TV programming that they watch on conventional TV sets. MobilMAX's analog TV handsets include the C889MA, a slim metal design with a high quality QCIF display, and the CG968A, a dual-mode CDMA/GSM handset with a 2.4" QVGA touchscreen.

Aruba Updates its AirWave Multi-Vendor Network Management

Aruba Networks announced a major upgrade to its AirWave multi-vendor network management solution, including the ability to integrate the management of wireless networks, wired infrastructure, and client devices into a single interface.


Aruba's AirWave 7 provides a single point of visibility and control for the entire network edge. New features include:

• New AirWave Mobile Device Manager (MDM) module: Provides over-the-air management of business-critical devices ranging from handheld devices to self-service kiosks to wireless printers.



• Wired infrastructure management: The AirWave Management Platform (AMP) now manages edge switches from Cisco and HP to provide integrated wired and wireless management. AMP can map upstream relationships between APs, controllers, and switches enabling root-cause analysis for scenarios such as a down AP - accelerating time to problem resolution.



• Improvements to open architecture: XML API eases integration between AirWave 7 and the rest of the IT operations infrastructure. The use of open standards makes valuable AirWave data accessible to virtually any application developer without specialized knowledge of the AirWave platform.



• Customizable user interface and dashboards: AirWave administrators can create customized views for specific roles, such as service desk personnel or executives, so that each person sees the information that is most useful. Users can also create and save customized reports and incorporate report components in their personalized dashboards.

Significantly, Aruba said the MDM capabilities would enable business to better control the growing number of iPhones and other smartphones appearing on the corporate network. Etisalat selects Alcatel-Lucent's GPON

Alcatel-Lucent has been selected by Etisalat to speed up the deployment of its nationwide FTTH network in the UAE. In this multi-million Euro deal, Etisalat will utilize Alcatel-Lucent's GPON platform to connect 50,000 households and business customers. The contract includes the 7342 Intelligent Services Access Manager Fiber-to-the-User (ISAM FTTU) GPON-based platform, and the related Alcatel-Lucent 5520 Access Management System. In addition, Alcatel-Lucent is supplying a range of optical network terminals (ONTs) and will provide Etisalat with its professional services expertise - including project management, installation, commissioning and training.

Green Touch Initiative Seeks Fundamental Gains in Network Efficiency

Alcatel-Lucent's Bell Labs has organized a consortium of leading researchers to create the technologies needed to make communications networks 1000 times more energy efficient than they are today. Specifically, the Green Touch initiative aims to develop and demonstrate fundamental technologies within five years that could lead to radical redesign of how networks are built and operated.


Researchers at Bell Labs calculate that wireless networks theoretically could be 10,000 times more energy efficient than they are today. Optical networks, in principle, could reach energy efficiency levels even lower than that. Significant efficiency gains could be possible by rethinking and improving transport, circuits, coding and protocols. Working groups will be established in each of these areas. The five year plan is to create a reference network architecture and demonstrations of the key components required to realize this improvement.


The consortium hopes to draw on expertise across the industry and around the world. Initial members of the Green Touch initiative include:

CA Acquires Oblicore for IT Service Level Management

CA has acquired privately-held Oblicore, a provider of Service Level Management (SLM) software for enterprises and service providers. Financial terms were not disclosed.


CA said the acquisition strengthens its s ability to set, measure and optimize service levels to meet business expectations across enterprise and cloud environments. Specifically, Oblicore's solutions also extend CA's capabilities in cloud vendor management and assurance of cloud service quality. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.


Oblicore's customers include AT&T, ABN AMRO, British Telecom, Cable & Wireless, France Telecom, ING, Lufthansa Systems, Siemens Medical Solutions, and T-Systems. Oblicore's solutions help these organizations to design, monitor and manage service level agreements across their IT service portfolio in business terms.

Cisco Restructures Asia Pacific and Japan Operations

Cisco announced a restructuring of its operations in Asia Pacific and Japan.


Effective February 2010, the company will create three theaters that will enable a more focused strategy and investment of resources to countries within the region.


China P.R.C., Hong Kong and Taiwan, formerly part of the Asia Pacific Theater, will now form a separate Greater China Theater. The remaining countries in Asia Pacific will form the Asia Pacific Theater and Cisco's Japanese operations will continue as the Japan Theater.


The new Greater China Theater will be led by Owen Chan, President and CEO, Greater China Theater, reporting to Robert Lloyd, Executive Vice President, Worldwide Operations. Chan joined Cisco in 1999 and has been President of Cisco's Asia Pacific region for the past five years. He will be relocating from Hong Kong to Beijing, China.


Jim Sherriff will continue in his role of developing and leading Cisco's cross-functional execution of the company's overall China strategy including government affairs, supply chain, product development, corporate affairs, corporate development and strategic alliances.

Emerson announced the combination of its Aperture and Avocent businesses into a new division that will be led by Stephen C. Hassell, who has served as vice president and chief information officer for Emerson for the past five years.


The new division is part of Emerson Network Power and is headquartered in Huntsville, Ala.
