Private Mobile Networks resource site

The advent of 5G, accompanied by ongoing buzz and hype from carriers and other vendors in the ecosystem, has piqued enterprise interest in using 5G (and 4G LTE) technology for private networks. Major public mobile vendors are facing competition from other established firms in vying for the private mobile market along with other aggressive start-ups and mid-sized players that have been featured more prominently as of late.

Further, hyperscalers are touting their integration with private mobile networks and hoping to provide enterprises with integrated solutions while mobile network operators and global system integrators are leveraging their assets in spectrum and experience and offering managed private mobile network services.

Given the frenzied level of activity, we're pleased to announce the launch of a series of thought leadership videos and a free, downloadable report from our partner AvidThink

The site features perspectives and insights from industry leaders and innovators like Aarna Networks, Accedian, Aruba, an HPE Company, Celona, EdgeQ, Fortinet, The Linux Foundation, and Qualcomm as well as connectivity providers including Boingo and Orange Business Services. We’ll be rotating in new content periodically from thought leaders, as well as our sponsors and partners, so keep your eye on the site as we bring you the latest insights into private mobile networks.

Google Cloud launches IonQ's quantum computing

Quantum computers from IonQ, a start-up specializing in trapped-ion quantum computing, are now available from Google Cloud Marketplace.

IonQ’s recently unveiled a 32 qubit system that boasts an average two-qubit gate fidelity of 99.9%, random access, all-to-all gate operations, and an expected quantum volume greater than 4,000,000.

IonQ's design leverages a linear ion trap that uses tiny electrodes precisely designed, lithographed, and controlled to produce electromagnetic forces to hold ions in place. The company says that because qubits aren't connected by physical wires, every qubit can interact with every other with no intermediary steps. The company has previously disclosed plans to develop modular quantum computers small enough to be networked together in 2023, which could pave the way for broad quantum advantage by 2025.

“We’re thrilled to make our hardware available for purchase on the Google Cloud Marketplace, and we can’t wait to see the different workloads that developers start running,” said Peter Chapman, CEO & President of IonQ. “This partnership expands the availability and use of quantum computing ten-fold and brings us that much closer to the first killer quantum application.”

“With availability on the Google Cloud Marketplace, IonQ is making its solution accessible to more customers and developers,” said Amy Bray, Global Head, Google Cloud Marketplace. “We’re committed to making it easy for customers to access, subscribe to, and benefit from partner solutions via our Marketplace, and look forward to working with IonQ.”

  • IonQ recently entered into a merger agreement with dMY Technology Group to go public at an expected valuation of $2 billion.
  • IonQ’s 11 qubit system is also available via the cloud on both Amazon Braket and Microsoft Azure.
  • IonQ's co-founders, Jungsang Kim and Chris Monroe, were recently named to the White House’s National Quantum Initiative Advisory Committee (NQIAC).
  • IonQ was founded in 2015 by Chris Monroe and Jungsang Kim with $2 million in seed funding from New Enterprise Associates. The company licensed core technology from the University of Maryland and Duke University.
  • IonQ has also received funding from GV, Amazon Web Services, Samsung, and Mubadala.

Nokia deploys 5G in Denmark for Telenor/Telia

Nokia is the exclusive supplier of 5G RAN in Denmark for TTN, the joint venture network from Telenor and Telia.

TTN is Denmark's largest mobile network with more than 4,300 sites. The merger between the two networks first began in 2012 with both companies each owning 50 percent of the network. It provides customers with better coverage, capacity, and quality, as well as reducing the companies' overall CO2 footprint.

Thomas Kjærsgaard, CEO of Telia Denmark, commented: “The 5G network supports the increasing need for data and advanced communication solutions in Denmark. With the modernization of the network, we are making a significant investment in and upgrade of the vital Danish telecoms infrastructure. A strong network is the foundation for our continued work to support the digitalization of Denmark, the development of our economy, innovation, and sustainable solutions for the future."

Lars Thomsen, CEO of Telenor Denmark, said: “As with everything else we do, our rollout is based on how we create the most real value for our customers. With our nationwide network rollout, Danes will experience higher speeds and better coverage in both urban and peri-urban areas. Specifically, the 5G upgrades will mean twice the speeds in densely populated areas and significant improvements across the country."

KDDI tests Nokia’s Liquid Cooling baseband solution

KDDI is conducting a trial using Nokia's unique Liquid Cooling AirScale Baseband solution.

Nokia says its solution can reduce its baseband cooling system energy consumption by more than 70 percent compared to traditional gas coolant-based air-cooling solutions.

KDDI is also trialing Nokia’s Nokia AVA for Energy Efficiency solution which applies AI to support the challenge of rising energy consumption in networks.  The solution helps to reduce overall energy bills by up to 20 percent, according to the company.

John Lancaster-Lennox, Head of Market Unit Japan at Nokia, said: “This trial is another milestone in Nokia’s commitment to sustainability and combatting climate change. Nokia was the first vendor to introduce this game-changing liquid cooling solution which supports operators in their quest to be more environmentally responsible while allowing them to achieve significant cost savings.”
