Vitesse Embeds Waveform Viewing in ICs

Vitesse Semiconductor introduced new technology that embeds the oscilloscope function into the receiver of ICs used in communication systems, thus offering direct viewing of signal characteristics similar to traditional lab oscilloscopes.

Vitesse's "VScope" is a patented Integrated Circuit (IC) based waveform viewing technology that provides an emdeded signal analysis tool that can be remotely monitored through network connections. Vitesse said VScope leapfrogs current signal integrity methods to scan the input data eye within the chip itself and produces the industry's first offering of true in-line imaging of the real-time data stream on a per-pin basis.

Vitesse's VScope data acquisition architecture uses dual adjustable sampling channels for simultaneously receiving and scanning. The company said VScope delivers superior accuracy over external measurement methods because it reflects the true behavior of the data stream as it is captured, thus avoiding correlation errors between the measurement circuitry and live data path. Post-equalizer scanning, made possible with VScope, delivers an unobstructed view of the internal IC signal compared to oscilloscopes that offer only an extrapolated view of signals from outside the chip.http://www.vitesse.com/vscope

The FCC originally licensed this wireless spectrum to Nextlink, a subsidiary of XO Holdings, Inc. and a leading provider of carrier-grade, alternative access solutions that hold licenses to fixed wireless spectrum covering 75 major metropolitan markets in the U.S. On December 13, 2007, NextPhase and Nextlink announced that the Companies had entered a long term agreement providing for NextPhase to secure from Nextlink fixed wireless spectrum capacity over four metro BTAs -- Los Angeles, California; Atlanta, Georgia; Miami/Fort Lauderdale, Florida; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania/Wilmington, Delaware/Trenton, New Jersey.http://www.npwireless.com

Thomson to Supply Airvana's UMTS Femtocell Products

Thomson entered into a global sourcing agreement to use Airvana's Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) femtocell technology in conjunction with its own residential gateways.

"By partnering with Airvana we will add value to our residential gateway product line and strengthen our innovative offering in the fixed-mobile convergence space. Incorporating such advanced femtocell technologies in our gateway platforms will also further consolidate Thomson's position within the 3G femto home access solution ecosystem of Nokia Siemens Networks with whom we've entered into a related collaboration in 2007," said Georges Laplanche, Vice President of Thomson's Premises Systems business unit.http://www.airvana.com
  • In September 2007, Airvana announced that it is working with Nokia Siemens Networks to provide an end-to-end femto cell solution for 3G mobile operators. Airvana said its UMTS Home Base Station femto cell leverages software-based functionality and off-the-shelf silicon to accelerate feature development and reduce product cost. The product is being certified to interoperate with Nokia Siemens Networks' Femto Gateway. As the first milestone in this effort, the companies have successfully completed simultaneous end-to-end calls utilizing Airvana's femto cell and Nokia Siemens Networks' Femto Gateway to connect to a 3GPP core network. The two companies will cooperate in the marketing and sales of the joint solution to mobile operators worldwide. Each company will independently supply its respective products to the operator. Initial trials of the joint solution are expected by the end of 2007, with deployments starting in 2008.

  • In July 2007, Nokia Siemens Networks announced plans for a new Femto Gateway network element that will not require changes in the operators' existing core network, as it will connect to the core network over a standard interface. Mounted in a standard telco rack, it serves as the grooming point for cellular traffic to multiple Femto CPE. The Femto Gateway will also connect via an open interface to Femto Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) in homes, allowing Femto customer equipment from multiple vendors to be connected to it. The Femto Gateway will support any Femto CPE certified by Nokia Siemens Networks to conform with the interface. Nokia Siemens Networks said it will co-operate with Femto CPE vendors to ensure interoperability of their equipment to the Nokia Siemens Networks interface.

  • Also in July 2007, Thomson and Nokia Siemens Networks announced a partnership to develop 3G femto cell home access solution. Specifically, Thomson's femto cell-enabled residential gateway will be coupled with the newly announced 3G Femto Home Access network solution from Nokia Siemens Networks. The solution will allow operators to deliver 3G multimedia services such as music downloads and video available in the home on any WCDMA 3G handset.

Xilinx Debuts Multi-mode Radio Card Supporting 3GPP-LTE

At next week's Mobile World Congress 2008 in Barcelona, Xilinx will unveil its latest portfolio of flexible hardware solutions for mobile phone base stations, supporting all major air interfaces, including 3GPP-LTE. In addition, it will highlight a new digital pre-distortion (DPD) capability that enables infrastructure vendors to achieve significant power reductions from the latest generation of power amplifiers.

Xilinx will show a Multi-mode Radio Card supporting UMTS, 3GPP-LTE, TD-SCDMA and WiMAX, using the DSP resources of the FPGA to cost effectively implement the signal processing requirements of digital up conversion (DUC), digital down conversion (DDC), crest factor reduction (CFR) and digital pre-distortion (DPD).

Xilinx will also host a baseband demonstration that comprises a complete, high-throughput, 3GPP-LTE-compliant physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH), utilizing IP components, including an LTE turbo decoder, FFT/iFFT blocks with cyclic prefix insertion, rate matching and QAM mapper/demapper functions. Implemented using the latest VirtexTM-5 FPGA technology, the transmit and receive functions are connected by Ethernet to a host PC that sources and displays different video streams. A dual video stream arrangement is then used to demonstrate the capabilities of the >100Mbps net throughput performance of the 3GPP-LTE PHY, over a 10MHz frequency band.
