SureWest Cites Revenue Growth for its Triple Play Launch

SureWest Communications, an integrated communications provider based in Roseville, California, reported quarterly revenue of $50.3 million, up 17% year-over-year, and net income of $2.7 million, or $0.19 per share. The carrier has nearly 18,000 DSL subscribers, up by 1,152 for the quarter. Residential broadband "triple-play" voice, data and video revenues climbed to $2.3 million in Q2 from $1.9 million in Q1 2003, as demand remained strong and the pace of installations accelerated. SureWest launched triple-play services in July of 2002.

Internet Photonics Hires Former AT&T Executive

Internet Photonics hired Kent Takeda as Vice President of its Telco Business Unit. Prior to Internet Photonics, Kent held senior management roles at Parama Networks and Kestrel Solutions. Before that, Takeda served as New Growth Initiatives Vice President, Global Marketing at AT&T Network Systems/Lucent Technologies.

Vivato Partners with Mitsui Comtek for Wi-Fi Switches

Mitsui Comtek, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsui & Co. Ltd., agreed to market and resell Vivato's 2.4 GHz Indoor and Outdoor Wi-Fi Switches in Japan. In addition, Vivato and Mitsui will work together to secure approvals from Japanese regulatory authorities for Vivato's unique technology. Vivato is a start-up based in San Francisco.

  • In June 2003, Vivato raised $44.5 million in third round funding for its Wi-Fi switches. The new funding was led by Advanced Technology Ventures (ATV), joined by all of Vivato's previous investors, including Leapfrog Ventures, U.S. Venture Partners, Walden International and Intel Communications Fund.



  • In March 2003, Vivato introduced its 2.4 GHz Outdoor Wi-Fi Switch capable of extending outdoor coverage for up to 4 km. The Vivato switch can penetrate exterior and interior walls to provide Wi-Fi coverage throughout an entire structure. Designed to support standard 802.11b Wi-Fi devices, the Vivato 2.4 GHz Outdoor Wi-Fi Switch provides three simultaneous beams of Wi-Fi throughout the coverage area. Its unique PacketSteering technology directs up to 33 Mbps of Wi-Fi capacity to active clients through an electronically controlled phased array antenna that creates high gain beams of Wi-Fi. The U.S. list price for the Vivato 2.4 GHz Outdoor Wi-Fi Switch is $13,995.



  • In February 2003, Vivato introduced a 2.4 GHz Indoor Wi-Fi Switch that provides an indoor range of up to 300 meters with standard Wi-Fi clients. The Vivato switch is a flat panel unit, which resembles a plasma television screen, operates in the 2.4 GHz frequency band and delivers three simultaneous beams of Wi-Fi. Designed to be wall-mounted, the panel employs Vivato's PacketSteering technology to dynamically shape very narrow beams, about nine degrees each. The list price is $8,995.

HNS Targets Satellite-based Wi-Fi Backhaul

Hughes Network Systems (HNS) began offering a satellite-based Wi-Fi Access service initially targeted at the national RV park and resort market segment as a value-added service opportunity for selected providers. The service uses Hughes' nationwide DIRECWAY broadband satellite service as a backhaul for locally deployed Wi-Fi hotspots.

ITXC Quarterly IP Voice Traffic Reaches 999 Million Minutes

During Q2 2003, ITXC carried a total of 999 million minutes of IP telephony traffic, up from 778 million minutes in the second quarter a year ago and 884 million minutes in Q1 2003. Revenue per minute decreased from 9.2 cents in the first quarter to 8.4 cents in Q2 2003. Some other highlights:

  • Since its inception ITXC has delivered over 8 billion minutes of voice traffic over its IP backbone.



  • ITXC's new SuperPoP in Germany now has 10 carriers connected and generated 32 million
    minutes of traffic in its second quarter of operation.



  • ITXC traffic from India is growing although revenue and margins from traffic out of India has declined due to price erosion in that market.



  • ITXC turned away potentially high-margin business from Interactive Marketing Technologies during the quarter due to unacceptable credit risks.



  • ITXC reported quarterly revenues of $84.2 million, an increase of 27.6% from the same quarter of 2002 and a sequential increase of 3.1% from the first quarter in 2003. ITXC's net loss for the second quarter of 2003 was $11.9 million, or $0.28 per share. During the quarter, the company reduced its employee headcount by 10%.

Cisco Reports Quarterly Sales of $4.7 Billion

Cisco Systems reported quarterly net sales $4.7 billion, compared with $4.8 billion for the same period last year and $4.6 billion in the preceding quarter. Net income was $982 million or $0.14 per share, compared with $772 million or $0.10 per share for the same quarter last year, and compared with $987 million or $0.14 per share in the preceding quarter. Some highlights:

  • Solid sequential growth in high-end routing and switching. The company sold $200 million in high-end routers (GSRs) during the quarter. Mid-range and low-range were a little weaker than expected. Enterprise switching was strong. Cisco shipped its one millionth 10/100/1000 port during the quarter.



  • In service provider markets, Cisco said sequential orders were up in the mid single digits.



  • Advanced technology markets represented 17% of its product orders in the quarter. IP telephony sales were strong, with Cisco claiming to have shipped more IP phones than all other vendors combined. In storage networking, Cisco reduced prices an average of 30%. The optical business was the best it has been in the past two years.



  • US federal government sales were approximately 20% of total U.S. enterprise business.



  • $20.7 billion in cash on hand at the end of the quarter, compared with $20.3 billion at the end of the preceding quarter.



  • Geographical distribution of sales were U.S (47%), EMEA (32%), APAC (10%), Japan (7%), Americas (4%).



  • Guidance for the ongoing fiscal quarter includes slight revenue growth of 2 to 4% sequentially, and gross margins in the range of 67% to 69%.

Ubicom Names Douglas Spreng as CEO

Ubicom, a developer of wireless network processor and software platforms, named Douglas Spreng as its new CEO. Spreng also serves as Ubicom's Chairman of the Board. Most recently, Spreng served as president and chief operating officer (COO) of Applied MicroCircuits Corporation (AMCC). Prior to that, he was president and CEO of MMC Networks (acquired by AMCC). Prior to MMC Networks, Spreng was executive vice president of the Client Access Business Unit at 3Com. Ubicom is based in Mountain View, California.

T-Com to Use ClickSoftware for Field Engineering

Deutsche Telekom's T-Com division awarded a multi-year contract valued at several million dollars to ClickSoftware for the use of its workforce management software. T-Com will implement ClickSoftware's ClickSchedule solution for the optimized scheduling and street-level-routing of more than 15,000 field service engineers. ClickSchedule will initially be integrated into legacy call center and manual dispatching systems. T-Com is primarily responsible for Deutsche Telekom's fixed-line network.

Verizon Wireless Selects Smith Micro for Wi-Fi Software

Verizon Wireless selected Smith Micro Software to develop a software connectivity solution that will give Verizon Wireless' mobile data customers the ability to access Verizon Wireless' 1xRTT Express Network and its new Wi-Fi service. Verizon Wireless plans to include Smith Micro's new combination client with all Express Network Mobile Office Kits and 1xRTT PC Cards sold by Verizon Wireless. The Wi-Fi client will also be made available for download by new Verizon Wireless Wi-Fi subscribers that have purchased a Wi-Fi device elsewhere. Smith Micro Software is headquartered in Aliso Viejo, California.

NTT-ME to Offer Riverstone's 10GigE in Japan

Riverstone Networks announced a resale agreement with NTT-ME Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of NTT EAST, covering the delivery of its 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 GbE) solutions to Japan's leading telecommunications carriers and largest enterprises. The agreement covers Riverstone's XGS Layer 3 switches, ES switches and RS routers.

Celite Raises $10 Million for DSL Headend

Celite Systems, a start-up based in Austin, Texas, raised $10 million in second round funding for its DSL headend. The Celite equipment could be used by facility-based copper access providers (RBOCs, IOCs and PTTs) and multi-dwelling units (MDUs) to pre-wire communities for broadband services. Investors include Austin Ventures and Highland Capital Partners. With this round, Celite Systems has secured more than $26 million in total funding.

  • In April 2003, Celite introduced its DSL Headend technology for multi-dwelling units. Celite runs Ethernet over existing building wiring, without requiring line splitters or filters. DSL lines are multiplexed for the trunk back to the network.



  • Celite Systems is headed by Roger Dorf, who previously served as the vice president and general manager of Nortel Network's Broadband Access Business Unit (formerly Promatory).

Motorola and NEC to Collaborate on Wireless Roaming

NEC America and Motorola agreed to jointly develop a converged WLAN, VoIP and cellular communication solution for enterprise customers based on industry standards. Financial details of the agreement are not being disclosed. General availability for the solution is targeted for the second half of 2004.

Verizon Wireless to Expand Wi-Fi Access through Wayport

Verizon Wireless will begin offering Wi-Fi access through a partnership with Wayport, which operates hotspots and wired Internet access points at more than 650 locations across the U.S. The Wi-Fi service will be billed directly to a customer's existing Verizon Wireless bill -- eliminating the need for business customers to use their corporate credit card and later expense the charge.

  • In July 2003, Sprint announced a Wi-Fi partnership with Wayport. Specifically, Sprint will begin providing Wi-Fi access this summer through approximately 800 hotspots in key locations across the U.S. The hotspots will be either built and managed by Sprint or made available through roaming agreements with Wayport. Sprint is planning to have over 2,100 Wi-Fi locations by the end of the year. Airpath Wireless will provide hosted services to Sprint including credit card authentication services, end user management and integrated customer care. Initially, customers will be able to subscribe to PCS Wi-Fi Access using their credit cards. In late 2003, Sprint expects to integrate usage charges into the customers' monthly PCS Service Plan statement.



  • Also last month, Wayport began offering Wi-Fi access at approximately 75 McDonalds locations in the San Francisco Bay area, and announced plans to launch a pilot Wi-Fi networks in Chicago and across Canada.



  • Also this month, MCI announced a roaming partnership with Wayport that gives its customers access to corporate networks from Wayport Wi-Fi sites.
    In May, Wayport signed an agreement with CNN to offer Wi-Fi service in the 38 airports across the U.S. with access to CNN Airport Network.



  • In January, AT&T Wireless signed a strategic Wi-Fi roaming agreement with Wayport, giving its subscribers access to Wayport hotspots.



  • Wayport's other roaming partners include Boingo, iPass and GRIC.

Sunrise Telecom Enhances VoIP Test Platform

Sunrise Telecom announced significant enhancements to its NeTracker VoIP test platform, including improved call generation capability in the millions of calls per hour. The new release also adds support for next-generation technologies including SCTP, SIGTRAN, H.235, and ATM layers AAL2 and AAL5.
