DOCOMO and NEC cut 5G SA power consumption with AWS Graviton2

 NTT DOCOMO and NEC demonstrated an average of a 72% reduction in power consumption against incumbent x86 processors using NEC's 5GC software running on AWS Graviton2. The trial tested performance within a 5GC hybrid cloud environment leveraging AWS Graviton2 and DOCOMO's on-premises Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) infrastructure.

Following the completion of this first phase trial, the companies will now conduct a second phase trial to test the 5GC network function on AWS Outposts equipped with Graviton2 processors on DOCOMO's premises.

NTT DOCOMO signs with Oracle Cloud

 NTT DOCOMO has adopted Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) to build its new development environment for ALADIN (ALl Around DoCoMo INformation Systems), one of the largest customer information management systems in the world. 

ALADIN supports DOCOMO’s more than 83 million subscriber base, handling all customer-related operations, such as membership and transactional data, credit checks, contract data and assignment of telephone numbers. DOCOMO’s customer information is rapidly expanding alongside the mobile operator’s ‘d POINT CLUB’ reward points program, growing numbers of traditional cell phone subscribers, and new customer touchpoints, such as chatbots and smart devices. To meet this business expansion and enable faster delivery of better services, DOCOMO is modernizing the ALADIN development environment by moving it to the cloud. As part of this, DOCOMO built a new development environment on OCI to serve approximately 300 developers.

As part of the cloud migration, DOCOMO has also moved its on-premises Oracle Database environment to Oracle Database Cloud Service on OCI.

NTT DOCOMO commits to carbon neutrality by 2030

NTT DOCOMO announced a commitment to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions arising from its business activities effectively to zero by 2030.

DOCOMO said it will achieve carbon neutrality by applying cutting-edge technology to improve energy efficiency and by procuring clean energy from renewable sources. It will also make efforts to directly procure renewable energy from solar power plants dedicated to supplying DOCOMO, and from other sources. Across its value chain, the company will promote the use of renewable energy through initiatives such as the installation of solar panels with the aim of becoming an environmentally-friendly telecom carrier.


DOCOMO also stated that its 5G networks are powered effectively with 100% renewable energy from this October. DOCOMO also plans to commence the sale of electricity generated from renewable sources as "docomo Denki Green" in the retail market directly to customers from March 2022 in its "docomo Denki" electricity service lineup. In collaboration with partner companies, the company will also consider delivering environmentally-friendly products and services, and in conjunction with our customers who will use these products and services, will promote carbon neutrality for the benefit of the whole of society.

NEC and NTT Docomo develop RIC for Open RAN

NEC Corporation and NTT DOCOMO are collaborating on the development of RAN Intelligent Controllers (RIC) in support of intelligent Radio Access Networks (RAN). RICS have the potential to reduce operating costs of RANs by automating base station settings. 

The companies expect that, in the future, the RIC control cycle will be advanced from slow control to fast control, and from the base station unit level to a user-based level of control. At the same time, optimization will be performed in conjunction with the control of different elements, such as radio resources and computing resources. Moreover, the companies aim to create new value by optimizing network characteristics, such as ultra-high-speed, large-capacity, ultra-low latency, high reliability, and multiple simultaneous connections to realize a variety of services through upgraded networks.


NEC's subsidiary, Netcracker, provides an Open RAN Domain Orchestration solution aligned with the O-RAN Alliance Service Management and Orchestration framework, including RIC functionality

developed by Netcracker. The solution is based on Netcracker's Digital OSS (operations support system), built from its wealth of experience domestically and internationally, and brings together the orchestration, real-time OSS, and advanced analytics required to fully automate RAN domain operations, from planning and design, to activation, monitoring, and optimization. With end-to-end visualization and optimization, the solution maximizes RAN performance and improves business KPIs for service providers.

NTT DOCOMO picks Cisco's segment routing to optimize 5G backhaul

NTT DOCOMO has selected Cisco's Network Convergence System routers and segment routing for network slicing to help optimize its 5G mobile backhaul.

Cisco said its converged SDN transport, with segment routing, and Network Convergence System routers can provide massive scale, full programmability, simpler cloud integration and service level agreements.

“The IP network plays a more important role with 5G than ever before,” said Jonathan Davidson, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Cisco Service Provider Business. “Networks have to be automated, programmable and capable of massive scale. Together, DOCOMO and Cisco mapped out the right path for its 5G transformation with a new intelligent, software-defined network. Converging services over a common, trustworthy architecture will reduce costs, deliver new services that span multiple domains, and prepare them for a profitable 5G future.”

NTT DOCOMO sets pace for 5G patents amongst mobile operators

NTT DOCOMO is claiming the No.1 spot amongst leading mobile operators in terms of applications for candidate standard-essential patents (SEPs) for 5G and also No.1 in terms of 5G technical proposals (contributions). DOCOMO ranks sixth in 5G SEP applications among all companies in all fields. The rankings are based on a study conducted by Cyber Creative Institute Co., Ltd., a Japanese firm that researches information and communication technology regarding intellectual property rights.

DOCOMO has applied for some 1,400 candidate 5G SEPs and submitted some 3,700 5G-related contributions to the 3GPP. One of its contributions to the 5G effort covers the issuance of early warnings of imminent natural disasters. The Earthquake and Tsunami Warning System (ETWS) is used extensively for services that provide citizens with disaster and evacuation-related emergency information, such as DOCOMO's Area Mail service and the emergency messaging services of counterpart mobile operators in Japan. Similar systems have also been introduced in the United States, South Korea and Europe.

NTT DOCOMO joins Stanford Data Science Initiative

NTT DOCOMO has joined the corporate affiliate program of the Stanford Data Science Initiative (SDSI).

The SDSI affiliate program, which was set-up in 2014, facilitates collaborative research between the private sector and faculty studying data-science and big-data at Stanford University's School of Engineering. NTT DOCOMO researchers will visit Stanford on a short-term basis.

NEC announces agreement to supply 5G base stations to NTT DOCOMO

NEC announced an agreement to supply 5G base station equipment to NTT DOCOMO. Financial terms were not disclosed. Docomo aims to launch 5G in 2020.

Under this new agreement, NEC will achieve 5G compatibility through software upgrades and a minimal replacement of hardware to maximize the use of existing high-density base station equipment.  NEC said it will provide updates that enable existing high-density base stations to be fully compatible with 5G while continuing to deliver LTE/LTE-Advanced services.

This includes base station equipment that NEC has been supply to DOCOMO since February 2015. This equipment is already compatible with the advanced Centralized Radio Access Network (C-RAN) architecture advocated by
DOCOMO, and is now being utilized as a base station control unit.

"DOCOMO aims to deploy and expand our commercial 5G services efficiently by maximizing the use of existing communications equipment," said, Hiroshi Nakamura, Executive Vice President, Chief Technology Officer and Member of the Board of Directors, NTT DOCOMO. " This agreement with NEC is in line with that policy and we expect it to make a significant contribution to our 5G services. Going forward, DOCOMO accelerates co-creation of new services and businesses with vertical industry partners."

NTT Docomo and NEC test 5G to race car traveling at 300 km/h

NTT DOCOMO and NEC conducted a test of 5G connectivity to a race car moving at 305 km/h (190 mph)

The test, which used 28 GHz spectrum, sustained a downlink of 1.1 Gbps between the 5G base station and the 5G modem in the car moving at 293 km/h and a fast handover during communication between 5G base stations and a 5G mobile station moving at 290 km/h. In addition, the trial succeeded in a wireless live relay of 4K high-frame-rate video via uplink from a 5G mobile station moving at 200 km/h. Both the 5G base station and 5G mobile station in the car were equipped for beamforming, which concentrated radio power in a specific direction, and beam tracking, which switched the direction of the beams to follow the 5G mobile station as it moved at high speed.

The trials were conducted last month at the Japan Automobile Research Institute (JARI).

The 4K video transmission operated at 120-frames-per-second and used NTT's real-time 4K high-frame-rate HEVC codec.

Other companies involved in the trials included DOCOMO 5G Open Partner Program participants, Sony Business Solutions Corporation, and DOCOMO TEAM DANDELION RACING manager Dandelion Limited.

Nokia and NTT DOCOMO test 5G using 90 GHz

Nokia and NTT DOCOMO will undertake a joint study and trials on 5G using 90 GHz frequencies.

Nokia Bell Labs has already tested a first phased-array RF chip solution for the 90 GHz band to increase radio coverage in higher frequency bands and deliver multi-gigabit speeds at scale.

At this week's Brooklyn 5G Summit, Nokia, supported by NTT DOCOMO, will show two technology innovations being developed to address these demands:


  • The companies will apply a Nokia Bell Labs-developed compact mmWave phased-array antenna system scalable up to 256-elements using an integrated circuit (RFIC) solution in the 90 GHz frequency band to enable multi-gigabit per second speeds. The test will demonstrate how using 5G New Radio (5G NR) enhancements at higher mmWave frequency bands can manage radio complexity and a larger number of antenna beams, while enabling greater bandwidth. It will also show how using a larger number of antenna elements at higher frequency bands can minimize path loss to enable coverage similar to that found using lower mmWave bands.
  • A joint demonstration will also show how dynamic offloading relocation in a 5G core will enable the low-latency networks required to support time critical mobile broadband applications for future automation and augmented reality.

Keysight delivers 5G tester to NTT DOCOMO

Keysight Technologies has provided a 28 GHz Channel Sounding Solution to NTT DOCOMO to characterize the air interface.

5G channel sounding measures parameters such as path loss, power delay profile, reflection, and various fading profiles including Doppler shift. It is required to design efficient and robust 5G channel models.

Keysight said its 5G 28 GHz Channel Sounding Solution with wideband MIMO data capture techniques enables engineers to measure angular spread with fewer measurements and improve resolution of the multi-path parameters. Keysight and NTT DOCOMO recently cooperated on a similar project at a 60 GHz fixed use case.

“We knew that we needed a cooperative relationship with a test and measurement provider who specialized in high-frequency applications to develop and verify underlying technologies for 5G,” said Yukihiko Okumura, Group leader of 5G Radio Access Network Research Group, Research Laboratories of NTT DOCOMO. “The technical support and expertise from Keysight in 5G channel sounding techniques for mobility helped us understand the channel behavior at mmWave frequencies, especially travelling at high speeds.”

NTT DOCOMO picks Ericsson’s virtual infrastructure manager

NTT DOCOMO will deploy Ericsson’s virtual infrastructure manager (VIM) solution at commercial sites in Japan.

The installation of Ericsson Cloud Execution Environment (CEE), which is based on OpenStack, is expected to improve installation, sanity testing, and deployment times for Network Functions Virtualization Infrastructure (NFVi).

Ericsson said its Fulfillment-OSS NFVi Provisioning solution will significantly reduce manual CEE deployment time and will enable end-to-end and efficient project implementation across NTT DOCOMO’s network function virtualization platform system.

Chris Houghton, Head of Market Area North East Asia, Ericsson, says: “Cloud automation is rapidly gaining attention among service providers as they address their digital transformation needs. First Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) trials planned for Japan

The first Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) trials in Japan will get underway this year with participation from NTT DOCOMO, Nissan, OKI, Continental, Ericsson and Qualcomm.

The testing will focus on the range, reliability and latency benefits of C-V2X direct communications operated in 5 GHz band. Additionally, the C-V2X trials are designed to demonstrate the complementary benefits of network-based communications utilizing LTE-Advanced (LTE-A).

C-V2X provides non-line-of-sight (NLOS) low latency awareness with longer range than Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) sensors, such as radar, lidar, and camera systems. It is to extend a vehicle's ability to see, hear and communicate further down the road, even at blind intersections, while complementing ADAS sensors.

C-V2X was defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) in their Release 14 specifications.

The C-V2X trial is expected to begin in 2018. Several use cases are planned, including: Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) and Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P) direct communications, as well as Vehicle-to-Network (V2N) operations over cellular network-based wide area communications with cloud access.

Some highlights:

  • Continental will utilize the Qualcomm C-V2X Reference Design, which features the Qualcomm® 9150 C-V2X chipset with integrated Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) capability to build connected car systems and integrate the systems into Nissan vehicles. 
  • Nissan will perform V2X use case selection and develop test scenarios with key performance indicators (KPIs) for C-V2X technology validation. 
  • OKI will bring their expertise in roadside unit (RSU) infrastructure and applications to demonstrate V2I as a viable technology for advanced traffic applications by integrating the Qualcomm 9150 C-V2X chipset into their RSU. 
  • Ericsson will join the V2N use case discussion involving the combination of direct communication and LTE-A network technologies. 
  • NTT DOCOMO will provide LTE-A network and V2N applications to demonstrate the benefits of the complementary use of network-based communications for a variety of advanced automotive informational safety use cases.

In these trials, all stakeholders are present to showcase the strength of the complete solution covering both connectivity and different applications. Ericsson is contributing with leading 4G, 5G radio, and network expertise and by leveraging our understanding of the IoT ecosystem," said Erik Ekudden, chief technology officer at Ericsson.

NTT DOCOMO invests in Petametrics

NTT DOCOMO Ventures has made an equity investment in Petametrics, a San Francisco start-up that provides “LiftIgniter”, a personalization API to deliver a wholly unique experience to every individual user impression.

LiftIgniter was founded by Indraneel Mukherjee, a former Google researcher, and a team of machine learning and math PhDs., The personalization engine is powering various NTT DOCOMO e-commerce services.

NTT DOCOMO said personalization based on sparse data points and real-time action by users has demonstrated the ability to significantly improve sales and customer engagement. However, most personalization engines require data scientists to analyze huge amounts of log data combined with user preferences and historical information in order to deliver intelligent recommendations to the end-user. With LiftIgniter, the machine learning-based personalization algorithms run 24/7, learning and reacting to each impression in real-time to predict and serve up tailored content for every user touchpoint. The platform is agnostic across all content, languages and devices. It can be fully integrated and operational within a few hours, with minimal ongoing management.

NTT DOCOMO to Deploy ALU's 7950 IP Core/Edge Routers

NTT DOCOMO will deploy Alcatel-Lucent's 7950 Extensible Routing System for supporting its 68 million mobile subscribers in Japan. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Alcatel-Lucent said the deployment of its 7950 XRS core/edge router strengthens a long-standing relationship with NTT DOCOMO, particularly in the supply of IP technology. Alcatel-Lucent previously supplied its 7750 Service Router series and 7450 Ethernet Service Switch for DOCOMO's Border GateWay Router and Radio Access Network Switch projects.

DOCOMO Expands 5G Collaboration Program

NTT DOCOMO is expanding its industry collaboration program for 5G.  The company announced individual collaborations with five additional vendors: Intel, Keysight Technologies, Panasonic Corporation, Qualcomm Technologies, and Rohde & Schwarz GmbH & Co.

DOCOMO and its vendor-partners expect to begin technical discussions and various indoor trials at the DOCOMO R&D Center in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture within the current fiscal year ending in March 2016. The trials will expand to outdoor settings thereafter. Key findings and achievements will be shared with global research bodies and at international conferences. Through the collaborations, DOCOMO expects to evaluate and verify its proprietary 5G technologies and thereby accelerate 5G standardization.

Since May 2014, DOCOMO has been working with a number of other vendors, including Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Fujitsu, Huawei, Mitsubishi Electric, NEC, Nokia and Samsung.

DOCOMO said it aims to introduce 5G on a commercial basis in 2020. 5G is being developed for ultra-high-speed data transmissions of over 10Gbps and 1,000 times the capacity of LTE, which will help address the proliferation of connected items in the emerging Internet of Things (IoT), as well as to support the increasingly diverse range of mobile services.

DOCOMO PACIFIC Deploys Ciena's 6500 Packet/Optical

DOCOMO PACIFIC will deploy Ciena's 6500 Packet-Optical Platform to build Guam’s first 200G network to deliver high-speed services for enterprise, government and carrier customers. The network will link all major communications hubs on the island, including three cable landing stations, via a ring-protected, underground fiber optic backbone.

With a new all-fiber optical core, powered by Ciena’s WaveLogic3 Extreme chipset, DOCOMO PACIFIC can now transport high-bandwidth traffic across a protected network with buried fiber and offer a flexible mix of 10G and 100GE services over a single 200G wavelength.

DOCOMO PACIFIC was formed through the merger of Guamcell Communications and HafaTel prior to acquisition in December 2006 by NTT DOCOMO.  DOCOMO PACIFIC officially merged with MCV Broadband and is now Guam and the CNMI's leading provider of telecommunications and entertainment services.

DOCOMO Readies VoLTE Launch in Japan

NTT DOCOMO is preparing to launch Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) in its home market in late June -- the first such launch in Japan.

Four smartphones and two tablets in DOCOMO's summer lineup will become compatible with the new service after a software update scheduled in or after late June.

The carrier said its VoLTE service will newly enable users to receive Area Mail disaster-information notifications while making VoLTE voice/video calls. Also, users will be able to experience data rate of up to 150 Mbps during VoLTE voice calls.

DOCOMO's new VoLTE service will require a subscription to Xi. Existing Xi billing plans, packet flat-rate services, discounts and dialing charges will be applicable to VoLTE voice calls, including the new Kake-hodai & Pake-aeru billing plans for flat-rate voice and data, as well as data sharing with family members.

Packet communication charges for VoLTE video calls will be offered free of charge until September 2015, after which video calls will incur both voice and packet communication charges.

NTT DOCOMO to Conduct 5G Experimental Trials

NTT DOCOMO announced plans to conduct experimental trials of emerging 5G technologies with leading vendors, including Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Fujitsu, NEC, Nokia and Samsung.

The research program will look at the potential of 5G mobile technologies to exploit frequency bands above 6GHz and realize very high system capacity per unit area, and new radio technologies to support diverse types of applications including machine-to-machine (M2M) services. DOCOMO also expects to collaborate with other companies in its effort to test a wide range of 5G mobile technologies.

DOCOMO is looking for 5G systems to be ready for commercial deployment in 2020. The new system is expected to enable ultra-high-speed data transmissions at more than 10 Gbps.

DOCOMO will begin indoor trials at the DOCOMO R&D Center in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture this year, to be followed by outdoor field trials planned for next year. Key findings and achievements will be shared with research institutes and at international conferences to contribute to 5G standardization, which is expected to start from 2016. Key findings also will be utilized for research aimed at incubating future advanced technologies."

NTT DOCOMO Ventures Invests in CertiVox

CertiVox, a start-up based in London, raised US$8 million in Series B funding from NTT DOCOMO Ventures and current investors Octopus Investments.

CertiVox provides password-less, two-factor authentication without tokens. Its M-Pin is a software-only solution, ideally suited for smart devices and does not require the presence of any third party authentication device. M-Pin can be embedded into software, hardware and can leverage Trusted Platform Modules (TPM) to provide the most secure strong authentication available to any application on any device.

The investment by NTT DOCOMO Ventures is its first in Europe, signifying the innovation and strength of CertiVox’s technology and its breakthrough potential to solve current problems in online authentication systems. Taken together with the company’s Seed and Series A financings, CertiVox has raised $17 Million to date.

DOCOMO Demos Field-tested Active Antenna System

NTT DOCOMO announced the first field test of an active antenna system that achieves a 4 dB reduction in electrical loss compared to conventional antennas. This promises to help enlarge the coverage range of base stations 1.7-fold.

The active antenna system, which was developed by Tokyo-based Nihon Dengyo Kosaku Co., integrates multiple antenna elements, each equipped with a small transceiver, which enables installment in confined spaces and assures continued coverage if one or more of the transceivers fails.
