UK to investigate cloud infrastructure giants

Ofcom is proposing to refer the cloud infastructure market to the UK Competition and Markets Authority for further investigation and possible regulatory action.

A new study on the cloud infrastructure market by Ofcom reveals that Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft have a combined market share of 60-70%. Google is their closest competitor with a share of 5-10%. Collectively these firms are known as the ‘hyperscalers’ and the vast majority of cloud customers use their services in some form.

The features and practices undertaken by these hyperscaler make it more difficult for customers to switch and use multiple cloud suppliers. We are particularly concerned about the practices of Amazon and Microsoft because of their market position.

Ofcom lists the following causes for concern:

  • Egress fees. These are the charges that customers pay to transfer their data out of a cloud and the hyperscalers set them at significantly higher rates than other providers. The cost of egress fees can discourage customers from using services from more than one cloud provider or to switch to an alternative provider.
  • Technical restrictions on interoperability. These are imposed by the leading firms that prevent some of their services working effectively with services from other providers. This means customers need to put additional effort into reconfiguring their data and applications to work across different clouds.
  • Committed spend discounts. These can benefit customers by reducing their costs, but the way these discounts are structured can incentivise customers to use a single hyperscaler for all or most of their cloud needs, even when better quality alternatives are available.

UK's National Grid deploys EXFO for fiber monitoring

The UK's National Grid has selected EXFO to provide monitoring for its ongoing fiber network health assessment.

National Grid has deployed an overhead fiber optic operational telecommunications network across its electricity transmission infrastructure that carries critical information essential for secure and efficient utility operations. EXFO will measure, analyze, and report results from an 80 km span of the National Grid network -- in one of the most challenging areas of the UK for weather issues – over a 12-month period. Deployment of test equipment and Intellisense devices got underway in October 2022.

EXFO said its technology will help assess the operational condition of the fiber network, while predicting its remaining technical lifespan and identifying potential points of weakness or failure. EXFO will also collect data from Intellisense Systems micro weather station (MWS) Internet of Things (IoT) devices being deployed to measure the specific environmental impact of wind, humidity and meteorological events. EXFO's Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based analytics solution will amalgamate and correlate data from both the fiber optic network and weather system inputs, and dynamically predict, detect, and prevent outages and impairments in the network that might otherwise go unnoticed.

  • EXFO's optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) fiber monitoring units are being deployed at key nodes on the fiber optic network to monitor its optical transmission characteristics and measure its health and condition.
  • Data inputs from both the fiber monitoring units and the Intellisense micro weather station devices will feed into EXFO's SensAI platform which classifies, correlates and groups abnormal events affecting network performance.
  • The UK's operational telecommunications network is part of the country's Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) and has been operating for over 30 years.

BT trials C-RAN in Leeds

BT announced a trial of cloud RAN technology in Leeds.

The pilot scheme led by BT Wholesale, part of the company’s Enterprise unit, will enhance coverage and connectivity for those visiting, working or living in Leeds and serve as a proof of concept for future developments.The project has seen the first units installed at key locations in Leeds city centre and will allow BT to track how the infrastructure improves access in the area. The infrastructure is currently being used by the EE and Three networks for the trial.

C-RAN technology uses specialist software which has the potential to be used in smaller, more compact units including existing street furniture.

BT award 5-year contract to Nokia for analytics software

BT awarded a five-year contract to Nokia for its AVA Analytics software for fixed networks. The project aims to help BT strengthen its network monitoring through AI and machine learning, and improve its subscriber experience.

The deal enhances Nokia’s dashboard solution (“Homeview”) for BT to give its call center agents a real-time, full view of the operator’s network, from individual subscribers to devices, in order to quickly correct access and in home issues, and provide the best service across all its phone and digital channels.

Nokia’s AVA Analytics will provide BT with the use of automated workflows with deep analytics to deliver operational efficiency improvements and boost BT’s net promoter scores (NPS). NPS is a barometer of how likely a customer would recommend a provider or service to another user.

Along with AVA Analytics, Nokia’s Home Device Manager and Service Management Platform enables BT’s roughly 6,000 care agents to remotely manage over 10 million WiFi connections, with more than 100 million actions taken each day to optimize the home broadband experience for BT’s customers.

Microsoft acquires Lumenisity, a developer of hollow core fiber

Microsoft has acquired Lumenisity Limited, a start-up based in the UK developing hollow core fiber (HCF). Financial terms were not disclosed.

Lumenisity’s next generation of HCF uses a proprietary design where light propagates in an air core, which has significant advantages over traditional cable built with a solid core of glass, including:

  • Increased overall speed and lower latency as light travels through HCF 47% faster than standard silica glass.
  • Enhanced security and intrusion detection due to Lumenisity’s innovative inner structure.
  • Lower costs, increased bandwidth and enhanced network quality due to elimination of fiber nonlinearities and broader spectrum.
  • Potential for ultra-low signal loss enabling deployment over longer distances without repeaters.


Microsoft said it made the acquisition to optimize its global cloud infrastructure and serve its Cloud Platform and Services customers with strict latency and security requirements.

BT agrees to Cost of Living Pay Rise

BT Group announced a UK Cost of Living Pay Rise to all but the highest paid staff. 

The decision comes as the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and Prospect are now recommending agreement to their members.

Details of the Cost of Living Pay Rise are:

  • £1,500 pay rise for all UK colleagues who currently earn £50,000 or less from 1 Jan 2023
  • Consolidated salary increase, not one-off payment
  • Covers 100% of frontline staff (and others at ‘Team Member’ grade), and 51% of managers in the UK. In total, 85% of UK-based BT Group colleagues
  • Highly competitive pay award when combined with the increase made in April, bringing the total percentage pay rise for the lowest paid to over 15% since this time last year

Ericsson to open 6G research centre in UK

Ericsson plans to establish a new research unit in the UK as part of a multi-million-pound investment.

The company said it will inves tens of millions of pounds (GBP) over the next 10 years in a UK-based program that will focus on 6G research and breakthrough innovations. Research areas will include network resilience and security, artificial intelligence, cognitive networks and energy efficiency. The program will employ 20 dedicated researchers and support additional PhD students who will work alongside leading academics, CSPs and industry partners to lead 6G research projects that contribute to the development of global technology, network innovation and new product solutions.

UK's Hyperoptic to deploy Nokia’s 800GE-capable routers

Hyperoptic, the UK’s largest exclusively full fiber internet service provider, will deploy Nokia’s 800GE-capable 7750 SR-s routers, which are powered by its FP5 routing silicon.

FP5 allows the delivery of more than three times more capacity in the same space and power envelope as the Nokia FP4 hardware, currently in Hyperoptic’s IP network. The deployment of FP5 is one of the first in Europe. 

Nokia said its system design innovation ensures that both the FP5 and FP4 can concurrently operate at line rate in the same SR-s system for economic, deterministic scaling of capacity along with extending the network life of deployed systems.

euNetworks deploys Lumenisity's hollowcore fibre

euNetworks Fiber UK has deployed a new ultra low latency route between Basildon and London that connects the ICE data centre to Interxion LON1 and LON2 and then onwards to Slough. 

The new route is over 45km long and includes 14 km of Lumenisity's CoreSmart hollowcore cable, which is compatible with regular single mode fibre.

The route is the longest commercial deployment of hollowcore fibre technology to date and its use is exclusive to euNetworks and its customers. It is also the first commercial construction of a long distance hybrid route of hollowcore fibre and regular single mode fibre.

Lumenisity says data travels 50% faster in hollowcore cable, reducing latency by 33%, and providing a round trip saving of 3μs (three microseconds) per kilometre. These latency savings are hugely significant in financial trading applications. They can also be scaled to increase the separation of data centres by 50%, whilst maintaining the latency envelope, more than doubling the area of land in which these data centres can be located.

BT lands contract win with ScottishPower

BT has been awarded a multi-million pound contract by ScottishPower to strengthen the connectivity throughout their network of windfarms and offices.

Under the contract, BT will provide integrated and bespoke telecommunications services to approximately 100 locations across the UK, France, and Germany.

BT said its connectivity will aid ScottishPower’s operational technology on its windfarms allowing controllers to monitor areas like turbine temperature, operating efficiency and the amount of electricity being produced by the site, helping manage the windfarm and the assets on it more efficiently. The company’s ambitious growth plans include expansion of its existing onshore wind portfolio, investment in new, large-scale solar projects and innovative battery storage systems.

BT Group buys 100% of its energy from renewable resources including Scottish wind farms. It also plans to accelerate responsible, inclusive and sustainable growth over the next decade as part of its Manifesto to achieve net zero carbon emissions from its operations by 2030.

BT faces further strikes on August 30 and 31

The Communications Workers Union (CWU), which represents BT Group employees, served notice of pending industrial action on August 30th and 31st, directly after the August bank holiday weekend.  As part of their ongoing campaign to seek higher wages and benefits, the union already held strikes on 29th July and 1st August, 2022.

CWU deputy general secretary Andy Kerr states “There’s no doubt that we were as solid as we could have been in the first industrial action – and I have no doubt that will be repeated on August 30th and 31st. We’re still hoping to get BT back round the table for serious negotiations , but as things stand it has sadly become clear that simply isn’t going to happen unless we take further action…so that’s precisely what we’re going to do.”

A BT Group spokesperson commented “We know that our colleagues are dealing with the impacts of high inflation and, although we’re disappointed, we respect their decision to strike. We have made the best pay award we could and we are in constant discussions with the CWU to find a way forward from here. In the meantime, we will continue to work to minimise any disruption and keep our customers and the country connected”.

BT braces for nationwide strike on July 29 and August 1

BT tests 5G carrier aggregation with Nokia

BT is testing the aggregation of four carrier components (4CC) in a 5G Standalone (SA) live network in collaboration with Nokia. 

BT’s Networks team have successfully combined four low-band and mid-band radio channels, (2.1, 2.6, 3.4, 3.6 GHz), using Nokia’s 5G Radio Access Network technology in EE’s live network spectrum.

The trial was conducted in two stages; it was first performed in BT’s Radio Lab in Bristol, and then moved outdoors, onto a radio mast at BT’s Adastral Park in Suffolk, where the team successfully achieved 4CC on 5G SA radiating in EE’s regular radio spectrum. Not only is it the first time in Europe that a network operator has achieved 4CC on 5G SA using commercial spectrum, but it is also the first time it has been achieved outside of a lab in Europe.

CityFibre picks Nokia's XGS-PON for UK broadband network

CityFibre awarded a 10-year contract to Nokia to supply its XGS-PON broadband equipment for its nationwide network of purpose-built Fibre Exchanges. Nokia will also supply fiber modems for customer homes and IP aggregation switches. Shipments will begin in Q4 2022.

CityFibre is building an open access network which will connect up to 8 million premises in 285 cities, towns and villages, reaching a third of the country. 

The Lightspan access nodes being supplied by Nokia as part of this solution will be used by CityFibre to offer its wholesale customers multigig residential broadband (up to 10Gb/s in both directions) and higher bandwidth services such as connecting Enterprises and providing backhaul for mobile networks.
