Red Hat aims for zero greenhouse gas emission

Red Hat aims to achieve net-zero operational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030.

Red Hat said its 2030 operational net-zero goal includes scope 1 and 2 emissions, and scope 3 emissions associated with its electricity consumption in third-party colocation data centers. The company has been through a rigorous exercise to develop an emissions accounting profile which establishes a baseline year of 2019.

To achieve the net-zero goal by 2030 or sooner, Red Hat will:

  • Reduce its operational GHG emissions 65% by 2025 against 2019.
  • Prioritize energy efficiency efforts and renewable energy procurement, including a goal to achieve 75% renewable electricity by 2025, and 90% by 2030. Red Hat plans to expand renewable energy contracts to support the full operations of top consuming facilities and deploy sustainable design standards throughout the company’s real estate portfolio to reduce consumption.

To drive the continual improvement among suppliers and within its own value chain, Red Hat will:

  • Engage ⅔ of suppliers (by spend) by 2027 and ask them to establish and maintain their own environmental management systems, and set goals to reduce their GHG emissions.
  • Invest in open source software, standardization projects, and communities, such as the CNCF Environmental Sustainability Working Group, to harness the power of open source in helping customers, partners, suppliers, and other stakeholders to meet their climate goals and improve emissions.
  • Develop a methodology for measuring software energy consumption and evolve reduction targets.

To ensure transparency and accountability, Red Hat will document and publicly disclose its GHG emissions reduction journey through the company’s annual Community and Social Responsibility (CSR) report and company website. Red Hat’s 2019–2021 GHG emissions data is available in Red Hat’s 2021 CSR report. These goals align with IBM’s commitment to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

Red Hat launches Enterprise Linux for Workstations on AWS

Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Workstations is now available on AWS, The service, which is accessible via an Amazon-provided NICE DCV client or standard web browsers, delivers a high-end Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Workstations environment for powering intensive workloads like animation rendering or data visualization. It supports a variety of GPU-accelerated hardware instances offered on AWS while still delivering a fully-featured Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Workstations environment, delivering a powerful set of capabilities, including:

  • Optimization for high-performance workloads with an emphasis on graphically-intensive processes, limiting the need to performance tune or configure the operating system to meet user needs.
  • Extensive software support with Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Workstations retaining the same certified ecosystem as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, with thousands of independent software vendor (ISV) applications ready for use.
  • Broad hardware support that works with a range of Amazon EC2 instances, including G-family accelerated instance types best suited for remote workstations.
  • Provides access everywhere by offering web client and Windows, Mac and Linux thin clients support.
  • An established software development stack with support for the latest stable languages, databases, and tools.
  • Consistency for the hybrid cloud, from platform to cloud service

NEC adopts Red Hat OpenShift

NEC has adopted Red Hat OpenShift as its preferred Kubernetes container platform. The companies are looking to develop DX, global 5G,digital finance and digital government applications. 

NEC and Red Hat will organize a joint technical support system (collaborative Center of Excellence) consisting of more than 100 personnel from both companies, mainly architects who are familiar with container technology and Red Hat products, so that customers can use NEC's solutions together with Red Hat OpenShift with confidence.

Red Hat updates OpenShift Platform Plus

Red Hat released a new version of its OpenShift Platform Plus that further extends its role as a singular Kubernetes platform to span the breadth of enterprise IT scenarios, whether a traditional datacenter, distributed edge operations or multiple public cloud environments.

The latest version of Red Hat OpenShift Platform Plus includes the necessary tools to more simply build, protect and manage applications throughout the software lifecycle and across Kubernetes clusters. The update includes:

Red Hat OpenShift 4.11

  • Pod Security Admission integration, which enables users to define different isolation levels for Kubernetes pods to help enforce clearer, more consistent pod behaviors.
  • Installer provisioned infrastructure (IPI) support for Nutanix for users to employ the IPI process for fully automated, integrated, one-click installation of OpenShift on supported Nutanix virtualized environments.
  • Additional architectures for sandboxed containers, including the ability to run sandboxed containers on AWS as well as on single node OpenShift. Sandboxed containers provide an optional additional layer of isolation for workloads, even at the far reaches of the network’s edge.
  • Enhanced oversight and compliance across hybrid environments

Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management for Kubernetes 2.6

  • A single Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management hub cluster can now deploy and manage up to 2,500 single-node OpenShift clusters, which can be deployed and managed at the edge through zero touch provisioning. Additionally, Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management 2.6 provides edge metrics-collectors designed specifically for single-node and small workloads, allowing for greater observibility of remote operations.
  • Automatic fleet wide visibility of applications, including wider visibility on the application topology, displaying applications created straight through OpenShift.
  • Cluster management directly from Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform, available as a technology preview, enables Ansible users to interact with Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management natively.
  • Integration with Kyverno PolicySet, available as a technology preview, provides users more options to keep pace with Kubernetes policy landscapes.

Red Hat OpenShift Data Foundation 4.11

  • OpenShift API for data protection. The operator-based application programming interface (API) can be used to backup and restore applications and data specifics, natively or by using existing data protection applications across the hybrid cloud.

Red Hat names Matt Hicks as CEO

Red Hat named Matt Hicks as its president and chief executive officer, replacing Paul Cormier, who will serve as chairman of Red Hat. 

Hicks previously served as Red Hat’s executive vice president of Products and Technologies, where was responsible for the entirety of Red Hat’s product strategy and engineering. Notably, under Hicks’ leadership, Red Hat’s open hybrid cloud strategy and portfolio have expanded to help customers build, deploy and manage any application, anywhere, from on-premises environment, to multiple clouds, and to the edge. This includes delivering new managed cloud services that help customers speed the development of cloud-native applications, new capabilities to accelerate AI development, product variants enabling edge use cases and new security approaches that span hybrid cloud environments.

Red Hat joins HPE GreenLake ecosystem

 Red Hat is joining the HPE GreenLake ecosystem. 

The partnership combines HPE GreenLake edge-to-cloud platform with Red Hat’s enterprise open source technologies will help address IT organizations’ need for agile technology solutions that can accelerate business outcomes and help fuel their digital transformations.

Samsung and Red Hat collaborate on next-gen memory software

Samsung Electronics and Red Hat are collaborating on software for next-generation memory solutions. 

The newly announced partnership will focus on the development and validation of open source software for existing and emerging memory and storage products, including NVMe SSDs; CXL memory; computational memory/storage (HBM-PIM, Smart SSDs) and fabrics — in building an expansive ecosystem for closely integrated memory hardware and software.

"Samsung and Red Hat will make a concerted effort to define and standardize memory software solutions that embrace evolving server and memory hardware, while building a more robust memory ecosystem," said Yongcheol Bae, Executive Vice President and Head of the Memory Application Engineering Team at Samsung Electronics. "We will invite partners from across the IT industry to join us in expanding the software-hardware memory ecosystem to create greater customer value."

Red Hat brings Ansible Automation to Microsoft Azure

Red Hat is bringing its Ansible Automation Platform to Microsoft Azure. It builds on Red Hat’s standard for hybrid cloud automation that has been refined for the evolving realities of computing at hybrid cloud scale. 

Red Hat said Ansible Automation Platform on Azure enables enterprise IT teams to achieve greater scale, speed and standardization with automation practices for their hybrid cloud. This helps to remove the infrastructure maintenance and operational burden from IT teams, enabling them to focus purely on delivering automation strategies for a more efficient, flexible and scalable business.

The latest version of Ansible Automation Platform added self-contained automation capabilities to deploy at massive scale across hybrid clouds and edge environments, while shifting automation more deeply into the application development lifecycle. VodafoneZiggo picks RedHat Openstack

VodafoneZiggo will deploy a hybrid cloud platform based on Red Hat OpenShift to unify its application infrastructure in the Netherlands, including its new standalone 5G core. The carrier has selected Red Hat OpenShift as its foundation for cloud-native applications across both the network and the business, with 5G Core as its first deployment. After a successful proof of concept, VodafoneZiggo enlisted Red Hat Consulting to support the production roll out of Red Hat OpenShift and to provide guidance for embracing agile development models like DevSecOps as well as moving to a more open, collaborative culture. 


VodafoneZiggo already had a common platform in place for its 4G mobile core and several business applications, built on Red Hat OpenStack Platform.

Red Hat and Nutanix enter strategic partnership

Red Hat and Nutanix announced a strategic partnership focused on building, scaling and managing cloud-native applications on-premises and in hybrid clouds. The collaboration brings together Red Hat OpenShift and Red Hat Enterprise Linux with Nutanix Cloud Platform, including Nutanix AOS and AHV.

Key elements of the partnership include:

  • Red Hat OpenShift as the preferred choice for enterprise full stack Kubernetes on Nutanix Cloud Platform. Customers looking to run Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat OpenShift on hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) will be able to use an industry-leading cloud platform from Nutanix, which includes both Nutanix AOS and AHV.
  • Nutanix Cloud Platform is now a preferred choice for HCI for Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat OpenShift. Red Hat's Kubernetes integrates with Ansible automation

Red Hat announced a new version of its enterprise-grade Kubernetes management offering with new capabilities for managing and scaling hybrid and multicloud environments in a unified and automated way. 

Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management for Kubernetes 2.3 brings integration with the Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform and Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management for a more modern, hybrid cloud-ready environment.



Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management can now automatically trigger Ansible Playbooks before or after key lifecycle actions such as application and cluster creation, making it easier to automate tasks like configuring networking, connecting applications to databases, constructing load balancers and firewalls, and updating IT service management (ITSM) ticketing systems. With a Resource Operator for Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management, building on the Kubernetes Operator-based foundation of Red Hat OpenShift to encapsulate complex operational knowledge into code, Advanced Cluster Management can call on Ansible Automation Platform to execute tasks more efficiently outside of the Kubernetes cluster. The result is a single, automated workflow for customers to operationalize Red Hat OpenShift environments alongside traditional IT systems.

The Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management 2.3 also includes additional support for importing managed Kubernetes clusters for Red Hat OpenShift on AWS (ROSA), as well as OpenShift clusters on IBM Power Systems. This builds on supported managed Kubernetes clusters for Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Cloud (ROKS), Microsoft Azure Red Hat OpenShift (ARO), Red Hat OpenShift Dedicated (OSD) and IBM system Z. It also supports provisioning on-premises Red Hat OpenShift clusters on Red Hat OpenStack directly from Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management.

Red Hat cites hybrid cloud wins with communications service providers


 Red Hat announced that several communications service providers (CSPs) have chosen its open hybrid cloud technologies to virtualize and containerize their networks, enabling the faster delivery of new and innovative applications and services. These implementations include:

  • HKT, Hong Kong’s premier telecommunications service provider and a leading innovator, has worked with Red Hat to diversify and expand the services on its unified online shopping platform, Club Shopping, built on Red Hat OpenShift. Another example is the launch of DrGo, an end-to-end app-based platform, which provides telemedicine services by connecting users with Hong Kong registered doctors and other healthcare professionals through the app. Through the enhanced reliability and flexibility of OpenShift, HKT is now able to react more quickly to market shifts, improving its nimbleness while still delivering innovative new services to its customers.
  • Proximus, Belgium’s largest telecommunications provider, is standardizing its NFV strategy on Red Hat OpenStack Platform supported by Red Hat Ceph Storage, Proximus can now run critical service functions in a cost-effective, scalable way, lowering associated costs by 20%. Additionally, by using Red Hat OpenShift for its web properties and cloud-native development environment, Proximus is able to deploy and run container-based microservices at scale, saving approximately $35,000 in monthly infrastructure setup and maintenance costs.
  • Samsung, a leader in innovative mobile communications, engaged with Red Hat to expand deployment options of its 5G solutions, including 5G Core and Radio Access Network (RAN), by applying them to Red Hat OpenShift. Samsung completed the testing and validation of its 5G core CNF on Red Hat OpenShift for a joint customer deployment. Samsung is also planning to test and validate its 5G vRAN on Red Hat OpenShift.
  • Telecom Argentina is using Red Hat OpenShift to modernize Flow, its digital-based entertainment platform, that offers live content and on demand TV series and shows, movies, games and music. Through this cloud-native platform adoption, Telecom Argentina has advanced the evolution of Flow for future challenges, with new models and new technologies also fostering a strong open source culture and DevOps mindset within the digital and cultural transformation the company is undergoing.

Red Hat builds edge use cases with new Kubernetes capabilities

Red Hat unveiled new products and capabilities aimed at helping enterprises launch edge computing strategies built on an open hybrid cloud backbone, including new features in Red Hat OpenShift and Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management for Kubernetes.

Red Hat said it believes that Kubernetes and its supporting technologies provide a perfect blend of power, reliability and innovation for edge computing, highlighted by the latest enhancements to Red Hat OpenShift and the newly-launched Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management for Kubernetes.

Red Hat’s new capabilities intended for edge use cases include:

  • 3-node cluster support within Red Hat OpenShift 4.5, bringing the full capabilities of enterprise Kubernetes to bear at the network’s edge in a smaller footprint. Combining supervisor and worker nodes, 3-node clusters scale down the size of a Kubernetes deployment without compromising on capabilities, making it ideal for edge sites that are space-constrained while still needing the breadth of Kubernetes features.
  • Management of thousands of edge sites with Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management for Kubernetes along with core sites via a single consistent view across the hybrid cloud making highly scaled-out edge architectures as manageable, consistent, compliant and secure as standard datacenter deployments.

Airtel picks IBM and Red Hat for open hybrid cloud network

Bharti Airtel has selected IBM (nd Red Hat to build its new telco network cloud, which will be based on open standards and designed for new digital services.

The project uses Red Hat OpenStack Platform for all network workloads and Red Hat OpenShift for newer containerized workloads. It will also tap into Red Hat's ecosystem of network OEMs. In the future, Airtel's open hybrid cloud platform is expected to help enable new revenue streams with the on-boarding of third-party services including gaming, remote media production and enterprise services. By embracing IBM and Red Hat's hybrid cloud technology all the way to the network edge, Airtel aims to achieve improvement in time-to-market of services, reduction in operating expenses and reduced capital expenses.

Kaloom’s Cloud Edge Fabric integrates with Red Hat OpenShift for unified edge

Kaloom is collaborating with Red Hat to provide a unified solution for distributed edge computing.

The solution integrates Red Hat OpenShift and Red Hat Enterprise Linux with Kaloom’s Cloud Edge Fabric, which supports sophisticated services chaining to improve overall networking efficiency. Hybrid 4G and 5G infrastructures can be supported with cloud native network function (CNF) fabric architecture

ZTE and Red Hat collaborate on VNFs

ZTE is collaborating with Red Hat on a new reference architecture for virtual network functions (VNFs). The architecture uses Red Hat OpenStack Platform and ZTE’s hardware.

Specifically, ZTE has completed the VNF certification of Red Hat OpenStack Platform 13 and plans to begin the certification for Red Hat OpenStack Platform 16 this year.

ZTE also plans to provide the integrated environment for its VNF services with Red Hat OpenStack Platform in ZTE Cybersecurity Labs in Nanjing and Brussels, in order to showcase the new reference architecture. ZTE Cybersecurity Lab is a center for innovation, and a global resource for customers and partners who want  to build NFV/SDN applications and solutions. It offers fully transparent policy allowing customers, regulatory entities and other interested third parties to perform independent security assessments and audits in equipment. The independent source code reviews, document review, black box testing and penetration testing allow customers to verify the security of ZTE’s products, services and processes.

Red Hat and ZTE have worked with Vodafone Idea Limited, India’s leading telecom service provider, to deploy its VNF services on Red Hat OpenStack Platform to help deliver its Universal cloud platform.

Red Hat appoints Paul Cormier as CEO

Red Hat, which is a subsidiary of IBM,  named Paul Cormier as president and chief executive officer, replacing Jim Whitehurst, who is now president of IBM.

Cormier previously served as Red Hat’s president of Products and Technologies. He is credited with pioneering the subscription model that transformed Red Hat from an open source disruptor to an enterprise technology mainstay, moving Red Hat Linux from a freely downloadable operating system to Red Hat Enterprise Linux, which now powers more than 90% of Fortune 500 organizations. Cormier has driven more than 25 acquisitions at Red Hat.

In addition to his new role as president of IBM, Whitehurst becomes chairman of Red Hat, succeeding Arvind Krishna, who is now CEO of IBM.

IBM completes its $34 billion purchase of Red Hat

IBM completed its $34 billion acquisition of Red Hat ($190.00 per share in cash) in a deal aimed at positioning the merged company as the leader in hybrid cloud technologies. Together, IBM and Red Hat promise to accelerate innovation by offering a next-generation hybrid multicloud platform based on open source technologies, such as Linux and Kubernetes, that enables businesses to securely deploy, run and manage data and applications on-premises and on private and multiple public clouds.

"Businesses are starting the next chapter of their digital reinventions, modernizing infrastructure and moving mission-critical workloads across private clouds and multiple clouds from multiple vendors," said Ginni Rometty, IBM chairman, president and CEO. Red Hat's fiscal year 2019 revenue was $3.4 billion, up 15 percent year-over-year. Fiscal first quarter 2020 revenue, reported in June, was $934 million, up 15 percent year-over-year. In that quarter, subscription revenue was up 15 percent year-over-year, including revenue from application development-related and other emerging technology offerings up 24 percent year-over-year. Services revenue also grew 17 percent.

Red Hat will continue to be led by Jim Whitehurst and its current management team.


IBM bets $34 billion on Red Hat as its pathway to multi-cloud

IBM agreed to acquire all of the issued and outstanding common shares of Red Hat for $190.00 per share in cash, representing a total enterprise value of approximately $34 billion.

IBM and Red Hat said that as a combined company tthey will be strongly positioned to address the migration of all businesses to multi-cloud environments in an open and secure way. They estimate that 80% of business workloads have yet to move to the cloud. The merger will draw on their shared leadership in key technologies, such as Linux, containers, Kubernetes, multi-cloud management, and cloud management and automation

IBM  was an early supporter of Linux, collaborating with Red Hat to help develop and grow enterprise-grade Linux and more recently to bring enterprise Kubernetes and hybrid cloud solutions to customers.

IBM said it will remain committed to Red Hat’s open governance, open source contributions, participation in the open source community and development model, and fostering its widespread developer ecosystem. It also promises to build and enhance Red Hat partnerships, including those with major cloud providers, such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, Alibaba and more, in addition to the IBM Cloud.

Microsoft intros Kubernetes Event–driven Autoscaling with Red Hat

Microsoft introduced Kubernetes Event–driven Autoscaling (KEDA),  a new open source project aimed at providing an event-driven scale capability for any container workload.

KEDA, which is now in public preview, is an open source component that supports deployment of serverless event-driven containers on Kubernetes created in collaboration with Red Hat.

KEDA presents a new hosting option for Azure Functions that can be deployed as a container in Kubernetes clusters, bringing the Azure Functions programming model and scale controller to any Kubernetes implementation, both in the cloud or on-premises with OpenShift.

Microsoft said Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) is one of the fastest-growing services in Azure.

Red Hat said it is contributing to KEDA (Kubernetes-based event-driven autoscaling), both via the upstream project and bringing its utility to customers using enterprise Kubernetes and containers with Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform.

Red Hat's quarter revenue reaches $879M, up 14% yoy

Red Hat reported revenue of $879 million for the fourth quarter of its fiscal year, up 14% year-over-year, or 17% in constant currency. Full fiscal year total revenue amounted to $3.4 billion, up 15% year-over-year, or 16% in constant currency. GAAP net income for the quarter was $139 million, or $0.75 diluted earnings per share (“EPS”), compared with GAAP net loss of $12 million, or $0.07 diluted loss per share, in the year-ago quarter. The year-ago quarter included a one-time tax charge of $123 million related to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act enacted into law in December 2017.

Subscription revenue for the quarter was $774 million, up 13% year-over-year, or 16% measured in constant currency. Subscription revenue in the quarter was 88% of total revenue.
