ZTE tests co-routing detection in an existing optical network

ZTE completed a commercial trial of co-routing detection in China Mobile’s existing optical network in Yunnan Province, China.

The trial with the Yunnan branch of China Mobile, involved two scenarios: co-cable routing detection and co-ditch routing detection. The trial result shows that there will be an early warning of active/standby paths in the same optical fiber or route so that it can be avoided in time based on fiber sensing.

According to the verification, ZTE's optical network co-routing detection function can exactly detect co-cable routing of 14 optical cables and 54 fiber cores by dynamic parameter optimization, AI algorithm and experience threshold adjustment. Also, ZTE takes analysis, contrast and on-site specialist inspection to exactly detect co-ditch routing of 12 optical cables and about 20 ditches in 4 core equipment rooms. The verification proves that ZTE can provide the operator with flexible optical network co-routing detection methods, along with real-time, accurate and reliable intelligent O&M measures, which well guarantees service survivability and alleviates the difficulty in dumb fiber resource management.

"The function can effectively solve actual problems in production and operation. Before this, active/standby routes are planned on the resource management map, and routing is determined manually, which leads to high error rate. Additionally, the accuracy of resource management information is hardly under control, thereby increasing routing risks,” said the leader of Network Management Center of China Mobile Yunnan.

“In the original routing detection, people pulled or pushed the cable underground manually, which resulted in low efficiency and service interruption. However, the co-routing detection now leverages dumb fiber resources without service switching. The innovative function remarkably reduces manpower and ensures service survivability while allowing resource management information modifications and route re-planning to avoid service interruption losses," he added.

FCC seeks to extend ban on equipment from Huawei, ZTE, Hikvision

The Federal Communications Commission proposed rules that would prohibit all future authorizations for communications equipment deemed to pose an unacceptable risk to national security.  Specifically, the FCC is would prohibit the authorization of equipment through either the FCC’s Certification or Supplier’s Declaration of Conformity equipment authorization processes.  The proposal also seeks comment on whether to revise rules concerning equipment currently exempted from the equipment authorization requirements to no longer permit this exemption for equipment on the Covered List.

The rule would include communications equipment and services from Huawei, ZTE, Hytera, Hikvision, and Dahua.

In addition, the FCC seeks comment on possible changes to the competitive bidding rules for auctions to protect national security.

"By reducing our dependence on network components developed by untrusted vendors, we send a strong signal that the United States is committed to developing a market for secure 5G equipment alternatives.  To this end, our ongoing work to foster the development of open radio access networks is important.  Because if we do this right we will have a renewed opportunity for American technology leadership, more competition, better economic security, more resiliency in our supply chains, and improved ability to protect the privacy and data of citizens," stated FCC Acting Chairwoman Jessical Rosenworcel.

Sweden bans Huawei and ZTE for 5G infrastructure

The Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS) issued new license conditions that ban the use of infrastructure products from Huawei or ZTE in new 5G installations in the 2.3 GHz and 3.5 GHz bands.  Four carriers have been approved to participate in the auction for these bands: Hi3G Access, Net4Mobility, Telia Sverige and Teracom.

The Swedish regulatory authority said if existing infrastructure for central functions is to be used to provide services in the concerned frequency bands, products from Huawei and ZTE must be phased out 1 January 2025 at the latest. A further condition is that if central functions are dependant of staff or functions placed in foreign countries, such dependencies must be phased out and, if necessary, be replaced by functions or staff placed in Sweden. This must be completed by 1 January 2025.

China Mobile tests SRv6 optimization with ZTE

ZTE completed a forwarding-plane multi-vendor interoperability test of an SRv6 header compression optimization solution in partnership with China Mobile.

The SRv6 optimization solution is an improvement and supplement to the standard SRv6 solution. It can support all SRv6 functions while reducing the size of the header by 4 times. In addition, it can effectively solve the problems such as high encapsulation overheads of 128bit SRv6 SID, low forwarding efficiency, and high hardware requirements for packet header processing, thereby significantly increasing the transport efficiency and strongly boosting the commercial deployment of the SRv6 technology.

The two companies are conducting follow-up tests and pilot trials of the G-SRv6 optimization solution in existing networks. These pilot trials should be complete by November 2020.

China Telecom launches 5G SA Massive MIMO 1+X SSB

The Hunan branch of China Telecom has launched China’s first commercial 5G SA Massive MIMO 1+X SSB (Synchronization Signal and PBCH block) site with three-dimensional coverage on 3.5 GHz using equipment from ZTE.

ZTE claims that the 5G 1+X SSB site offers a better coverage compared with the traditional seven-beam sites, and that its solution can increase the data rate in the weak coverage areas by 49.5%. On the 29th floor with very weak signal, the downlink rate has stably reached over 100Mbps after the new site has been set up. In addition, the power consumption has been reduced by 5% to 10% during the low traffic periods, hence a lower TCO.

FCC designates Huawei and ZTE as National Security Threats

The FCC officially designated Huawei and ZTE, as well as their parents, affiliates, and subsidiaries, as national security threats.

As a result of the designation, money from the FCC’s $8.3 billion a year Universal Service Fund may no longer be used to purchase, obtain, maintain, improve, modify, or otherwise support any equipment or services produced or provided by either company.

“With today’s Orders, and based on the overwhelming weight of evidence, the Bureau has designated Huawei and ZTE as national security risks to America’s communications networks—and to our 5G future,” said FCC Chairman Ajit Pai.  “Both companies have close ties to the Chinese Communist Party and China’s military apparatus, and both companies are broadly subject to Chinese law obligating them to cooperate with the country’s intelligence services.  The Bureau also took into account the findings and actions of Congress, the Executive Branch, the intelligence community, our allies, and communications service providers in other countries.  We cannot and will not allow the Chinese Communist Party to exploit network vulnerabilities and compromise our critical communications infrastructure.  Today’s action will also protect the FCC’s Universal Service Fund—money that comes from fees paid by American consumers and businesses on their phone bills—from being used to underwrite these suppliers, which threaten our national security.”

  • In November 2019, the FCC unanimously adopted a ban on the use of universal service support to purchase, obtain, or maintain any equipment or services produced or provided by companies posing a national security threat to the integrity of communications networks or the communications supply chain.
