EXA Infrastructure deploys Infinera on Trans Adriatic Express subsea cable

EXA Infrastructure (EXA) has deployed Infinera’s ICE6 800G coherent optical solution on the EXA Trans Adriatic Express (TAE), a submarine cable system linking EXA’s current European footprint to Turkey via Albania and Greece.

TAE is a joint venture formed between EXA and Trans Adriatic Pipeline Ag (TAP), the owner of a critical new gas pipeline connecting the Caspian Sea to southern Italy. Completed in 2020, the pipeline connects Melendugno in southern Italy through Albania and Greece to the Turkish border at Kipoi. This project creates a unique fiber optic network connecting Milan, Tirana, Athens, Sofia, and Istanbul with high-quality, high-performance, and ultra-reliable digital infrastructure.

Infinera said its ICE6 optical engines provide subsea network operators like EXA with industry-leading capacity per cable by leveraging unique features including highly granular baud rate configuration, industry-leading long-codeword probabilistic constellation shaping (LC-PCS), and Nyquist subcarriers that seamlessly integrate with existing third-party line systems.

“As a dedicated operator of hyper scale digital infrastructure, EXA is continuously investing in network expansion projects to further develop the depth and breadth of our current footprint. Our mission is to provide high-quality, reliable, and scalable infrastructure between the locations our customers demand, which are typically the large datacenter clusters, cloud regions and cable landing stations,” said Ciaran Delaney, EXA Chief Operating Officer. “We selected Infinera’s ICE6 optical engine based on its optical performance in subsea and terrestrial applications. In our deployment of ICE6 elsewhere on our network, we have been impressed with lead times despite a very challenging supply chain environment, and with seamless integration into our existing network. EXA is preparing for growth in this region by deploying ICE6 to enable us to meet this demand.”

“We are pleased to support EXA in deploying proven, industry-leading solutions like ICE6 to quickly and cost-effectively accelerate their service delivery to meet rising customer demands while protecting their subsea network infrastructure investment,” said Nick Walden, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Sales, Infinera.

Infinera posts Q1 revenue of $338.9 million

Infinera reported GAAP revenue for Q1 2022 of $338.9 million compared to $400.3 million in the fourth quarter of 2021 and $330.9 million in the first quarter of 2021. GAAP gross margin for the quarter was 32.9% compared to 35.6% in the fourth quarter of 2021 and 35.4% in the first quarter of 2021. GAAP operating margin for the quarter was (10.8)% compared to (2.5)% in the fourth quarter of 2021 and (7.0)% in the first quarter of 2021. Non-GAAP net loss for the quarter was $(14.0) million, or $(0.07) per share, compared to net income of $5.7 million, or $0.03 per share, in the fourth quarter of 2021, and $(5.5) million, or $(0.03) per share, in the first quarter of 2021.

Infinera CEO David Heard said, “Demand in our fiscal first quarter was quite strong, with double digit year-over-year growth in bookings and record backlog. We won multiple new customer deals at a faster pace and of a larger magnitude than originally expected. However, the suspension of our operations in Russia late in the quarter and the supply chain impact from delayed customer project completions and elevated costs each muted our revenue and margin.”

“In the quarter, we achieved additional success milestones in our 8x4x1 strategy as we ramped ICE6 and began producing key elements of our pluggables ahead of schedule, which is critical to the future expansion of our addressable market and margins. We feel confident that our recent wins, record backlog and focused execution set us up for achieving improved revenue growth and margins in the second half of the year.”

PCCW Global doubles capacity on PEACE cable with Infinera

PCCW Global has completed a significant upgrade on the PEACE cable system between Marseille, Cyprus and Abu Talat using Infinera’s ICE technology. PCCW Global now offers network operators the ability to significantly increase capacity per fiber pair on these critical Middle East and Mediterranean fiber routes.

By leveraging Infinera’s ICE technology on the GX Series Compact Modular Platform, PCCW Global is able to reach individual wavelength speeds of 650 Gbps resulting in more capacity, with less hardware, and providing up to 25 terabits per fiber pair.

Mr. Haitham Zahran, Vice President of EMEA Subsea Cable Systems, PCCW Global, said, “The PEACE cable system is the highest-performing open cable system connecting Asia, Europe and Africa. By collaborating with Infinera to upgrade our network segment to increase fiber capacity, we are able to offer customers industry-leading innovation that provides the most reliability and highest capacity fiber pair available.”

Mr. Nick Walden, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales, Infinera, said, “Infinera’s subsea solutions have historically provided network operators the greatest amount of value from their fiber assets using innovative, industry-leading technology. Infinera’s ICE solution enables PCCW Global to offer network operators open, scalable and flexible services to meet the region’s growing bandwidth demands.”

Germany's Hetzner Online Deploys Infinera’s ICE6

Hetzner Online, a leading web hosting and data center operator in Germany, is using Infinera’s ICE6 solution on the GX Series Compact Modular Platform to offer new 400 GbE services across its network to meet the surging bandwidth demands of its customers.

Infinera said the deployment doubled capacity for Hetzner Online, which ranks as one of the largest data center operators in Europe with hundreds of thousands of servers in operation. With ICE6, Hetzner Online can efficiently provide 3 x 400 GbE services between any two points in its network using a single ICE6 optical engine running 2 x 600 Gb/s wavelengths.

“Keeping up with the relentless growth in bandwidth of our customers is a critical aspect of being a leading provider of hosting services,” said Martin Fritzsche, Head of Network, Hetzner Online. “With ICE6’s industry-leading performance, we have been able to double the capacity of our network to meet the unpredictable data center interconnection needs of our customers in Germany and beyond.”

“Infinera’s high-performance ICE6 solution continues to meet the demands of rapid bandwidth growth driven by cloud services, providing operators like Hetzner Online the ability to maximize their network infrastructure by utilizing the greatest capacity at the greatest reach, resulting in a cost-effective and spectrally efficient solution,” said Nick Walden, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Sales, Infinera. “We are pleased to continue to support Hetzner Online in providing its customers with industry-leading services.”

GBI deploys Infinera’s ICE Optical Engines

Gulf Bridge International (GBI), a global cloud, connectivity, and content enabler, deployed Infinera’s Infinite Capacity Engine (ICE) technology across its submarine and terrestrial networks serving the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.  The upgrade has enabled GBI to launch new initiatives like its Capacity Protection Program and prepare for major events like the World Cup scheduled to take place in Qatar later this year.

Infinera’s ICE technology on the GX Series Compact Modular Platform has enabled GBI to launch its Capacity Protection Program, which seeks to provide customers with increased protection and optimize both the restoration and repair processes, as well as take a proactive approach to fault prediction and detection. Launched earlier this year, GBI’s program will provide billions of international viewers with a seamless viewing experience of the world’s largest football competition.

“GBI operates significant subsea and terrestrial networks in the Middle East and globally, providing their customers with industry-leading network services,” said Nick Walden, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Sales, Infinera. “By deploying Infinera’s high-capacity coherent optical transmission solutions on their Smart Network, GBI is able to increase network capacity and deliver new services to their customers. We are delighted to support GBI and their customers throughout the Middle East and globally.”
