Dublin and Virgin Media test TIP's OpenWiFi in a WiFi4EU configuration

The Dublin City Council, Ireland, supported by Virgin Media Business, is testing Wi-Fi 6 Access Points that are compliant with TIP OpenWiFi and with the technical requirements of the European Commission’s WiFi4EU initiative, the benchmark for public Wi-Fi deployments in Europe. The deployment includes a cloud-based controller from NetExperience and access points from Edgecore and HFCL. 

WiFi4EU promotes free access to Wi-Fi connectivity for citizens in public spaces including parks, squares, public buildings, libraries, health centers and museums in municipalities throughout Europe. Municipalities receive a voucher that pays for the network including maintenance of the equipment to offer free and high-quality Wi-Fi connectivity for at least three years. Dublin City’s WiFi4EU Wi-Fi network will be a free Wi-Fi network and available throughout its historic city center.

IRIS subsea cable completed linking Ireland and Iceland

The IRIS Sub-Sea Telecoms Cable System connecting Galway, Ireland to Iceland has now been completed.

The IRIS system will be ready for service in the first quarter of 2023 and will be the third submarine fibre optic cable system connecting Iceland with Europe. The system provides further redundancy in telecommunication connection between Iceland and Europe, with low latency connections around 10.5 ms, between Reykjavík and Dublin. The IRIS system is integrated into Farice’s network in Iceland and Europe to enhance the network and provide comprehensive, diverse, and secure connectivity between Farice’s network POPs in Iceland and Euro

Farice signed a contract with SubCom, LLC, a global subsea fiber optic cable system supply company, to install the IRIS Cable System and SubCom has now received provisional acceptance for the IRIS Cable System, the final phase before officially handing the system over to its owner, Farice.

The IRIS system will be ready for service in the first quarter of 2023 and will be the third submarine fiber optic cable system connecting Iceland with Europe. The system provides further redundancy in telecommunication connection between Iceland and Europe, with low latency connections around 10.5 ms, between Reykjavík and Dublin. Xunison secures €3.35 million

Xunison, a start-up based in Dublin, Ireland,  raised seed capital of €3.35 million for its development of software/hardware solutions for telcos and ISPs. 

The funding was secured through Focus Capital Partners.

Xunison cited a business’s partnership rollout with STC, Saudi Arabia.  

Speaking of the super round secured, CEO of Xunison, Ryan O’Donovan commented, “We were humbled by the level of interest that was expressed in this round. It exceeded our expectations and capacity when it closed out on Christmas week. Farice plans fiber route linking Iceland, Ireland and Japan

Farice reached a sales agrement with Far North Digital (FND) for fiber connectivity between Japan and Iceland via Farice’s new IRIS submarine cable and FND’s planned Arctic cable.

Construction is currently underway for Farice's IRIS Subsea Telecoms Cable System from Iceland to Galway, Ireland. The system is planned for service early 2023.

The FND fiber cable will be the first Arctic route connecting Asia with Europe via the Northwest Passage, greatly reducing the optical distance between Asia and Europe, thus minimizing latency.  FND is aiming for commercial launch by the end of 2026.

Farice and FND have agreed to develop a connectivity exchange at their shared landing site in Galway, Ireland.  Through the exchange, customers will be able to buy direct connectivity between Japan and Iceland, linking the third largest economy in the world and Iceland, which has 100% green and sustainable electricity.

IRIS cable to link Iceland to Ireland with up to 108 Tbps

IRIS, a new six-fiber pair undersea cable system, will connect Iceland and Ireland with up to 108 Tbps of system capacity.

Farice, the international connectivity provider fully owned by the Icelandic Government, has selected Subcom as the primary contractor.

Currently, there are two other submarine cable systems that connect Iceland to Europe – FARICE-1 (2003) and DANICE (2009). 

IRIS will be approximately 1,700 km in length and connect south west of Iceland to Ballyloughane Strand in Galway, Ireland. Farice has already finalized the DTS and marine survey work on Ireland’s continental shelf and will complete the remaining survey works to Iceland in 2021. Manufacture of the cable and equipment will take place at SubCom’s manufacturing headquarters in Newington, NH, USA during 2021 and early 2022, with main lay installation operations scheduled for summer 2022. The system is expected to be ready for service by the end of 2022.

Farice opted to land the IRIS cable in Ireland, a nexus of trans-Atlantic connections and a center of European operations for many international businesses. IRIS will directly connect to a new high-speed undersea cable system that will enable more diverse, secure, high-speed connectivity between Iceland and mainland Europe.

Microsoft's data center UPS batteries to provide backup for Irish grid

Microsoft believes the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) batteries used in its hyperscale data centers could provide backup power to the public electrical grid. 

The UPS in Microsoft’s Dublin data center in Ireland will be the first to enable real-time interaction with the electric power grid. This will help grid operators provide uninterrupted service when demand exceeds the supply generated elsewhere on the grid by wind, solar and other sources.

"We have this battery asset in the datacenter that is just sitting there,” said Christian Belady, distinguished engineer and vice president of Microsoft’s datacenter advanced development group. "Why don’t we offer it to the grid and come up with a dynamic way of managing it as a dual-purpose asset and thus drive more efficiency and asset utilization? That’s what drove this win-win situation."

NEC. to acquire Ireland's Aspire Tech. for O-RAN expertise

NEC agreed to acquire Aspire Technology Unlimited Company, a system integration company headquartered in Dublin, Ireland. The company specializes in designing and integrating Open RAN solutions. It provides solutions and services across the full network lifecycle for legacy and open architectures, from 2G to 5G. Financial terms were not disclosed.

NEC is a global leader in Open RAN. NEC Open Networks is an industry-leading ecosystem consisting of an end-to-end suite of open products and solutions, including Open RAN components for disaggregated hardware and software, xHaul transport, converged core, automation/ orchestration software and SI services.

Construction begins on Farice cable from Iceland to Ireland

Construction is underway for Farice's new IRIS Subsea Telecoms Cable System from Iceland to Galway, Ireland.

Earlier this month, SubCom’s cable installation vessel the CS Durable landed the cable successfully at Thorlakshofn beach in Iceland.  Subcom said deployment is expected to advance at approximately 20-200 km per day with a target burial depth of 1.5m beneath the seabed in water depth of up to 1,500m. Work on the terrestrial section of underground duct and a termination station in Galway, Ireland and Thorlakshofn, Iceland has taken place and the sites are ready to connect the submarine cable system. The final splice and completion of marine work ia anticipated in mid-August 2022.

The IRIS system will be the third submarine fibre optic cable system connecting Iceland with Europe.

Ericsson expands 5G R&D centre in Ireland

Ericsson plans to hire 250 people at its Irish Research and Development Centre in Athlone to support the company’s ongoing development of innovative cloud-native products that orchestrate, automate and power its global 5G portfolio.

The new positions, which will be added over the next three years, will be for cloud native engineers with competences including Kubernetes, Docker, Helm, HCP, together with core programming languages such as Java, C++, JavaScript, Python and Golang. This project is supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland.

One of Ireland’s largest employers within software development, Ericsson has had a Research and Development (R&D) presence in Athlone since 1979. The Athlone facility, which is the global R&D headquarters of Ericsson Digital Services OSS (Operations Support Systems), currently employs 1200 people developing its OSS and Cloud RAN (Radio Access Network) portfolio. Ericsson employs an additional 200 at its Dublin base.

eir’s 5G network now extends across 1,250 sites in Ireland

eir, Ireland’s leading telecommunications provider, reported that its 5G network now extends across 1,250 sites in 450 towns and cities in Ireland.

eir also announced that 5G roaming is now available for customers travelling within the UK and over 30 other countries, including Portugal, France, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, The Netherlands and Thailand.

Motorola Solutions acquires TETRA Ireland

Motorola Solutions has acquired TETRA Ireland Communications Limited, the provider of Ireland’s National Digital Radio Service (NDRS). Financial terms were not disclosed.

TETRA Ireland delivers mission-critical voice and data land mobile radio (LMR) communications to thousands of first responders and frontline workers from national security and enforcement agencies, health and emergency services, state utilities and volunteer organizations across the country. The network is based on the latest TETRA digital radio technology from Motorola Solutions.

eir to establish wholesale fibre network for Ireland with InfraVia

eir, Ireland’s incumbent telecommunications provider, and InfraVia, is a leading independent private equity firm specialising in infrastructure and technology investments, agreed to establish a joint venture to accelerate the roll-out of high-speed internet across Ireland. 

InfraVia will take a 49% stake in a new subsidiary of eir, Fibre Networks Ireland Limited. The companies estimate that 200,000 homes will be passed in 2022, increasing to 250,000 homes in 2023. This acceleration in network roll-out will allow around 50,000 more families and businesses to gain access to high-speed internet per year than previously anticipated by eir.

Enea to acquire AdaptiveMobile Security Ltd,

Enea agreed to acquire AdaptiveMobile Security Ltd, a  provider of security solutions for mobile networks, for approximately EUR 45 million on a cash and debt free basis. 

AdaptiveMobile Security, which is based in Dublin, Ireland, delivers software and services for messaging and signaling security in mobile core networks. The company’s products protect mobile networks, their subscribers, and their data from all types of network-borne attacks. Messaging security prevents unwanted traffic which can be linked to security threats, service abuse, or revenue loss. The purpose of signaling security is to prevent cyberattacks exploiting signaling traffic. The offering is a combination of carrier-grade signaling firewalls, reporting, and advanced monitoring. AdaptiveMobile Security will continue to operate under its current brand as a new business unit within Enea and will be headed by Brian Collins.

Enea, which is based in Sweden,  estimates that AdaptiveMobile Security will have sales of approximately EUR 17 million for the full year 2021, with an EBIT margin in 2022 that will be close to Enea's operating margin target. Closing is expected in July 2021.

National Broadband Ireland rolls FTTH in Tipperary

National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company rolling out the new high-speed fibre broadband network under the Irish Government’s National Broadband Plan (NBP), confirmed that construction activiy is now underway in Tipperary.

In Tipperary, over 3,316 https://nbi.ie/premises have been surveyed to date with network designs completed to deliver the new Fibre to the Home (FTTH) network in the area. In Tipperary, there are 29,759 premises in the Intervention Area (IA), which includes homes, farms, commercial businesses and schools. This equates to 35% of all premises in the county. Under the National Broadband Plan, Tipperary will see an investment of €118M in the new high-speed fibre network. 

NBI chief executive Peter Hendrick said the company was pleased with the progress being made: “We started physical work on the ground in January 2020 and despite the challenging environment caused by Covid-19, we’ve grown and mobilised the team working on the project across all 26 counties and are making good progress. We are acutely aware that people want access to high-speed broadband as soon as possible, and our goal is to deliver that.”

Virgin Media Business deploys Infinera's XTM in Dublin metro network

Virgin Media Business has deployed Infinera’s XTM Series in its metro network serving Dublin, Ireland, which serves major data centers throughout the region.

Infinera said its XTM Series provides Virgin Media Business with faster deployment speeds and higher metro aggregation capacity, delivering highly secure and extremely fast services to Virgin Media Business’ customers in the financial, healthcare, and government sectors. Data center operators are now able to connect sites with 10G and 100G protected services on a dedicated network ring, bolstering capacity for end users.

Ireland's Tyndall National Institute opens wireless laboratory in Dublin

Ireland's Tyndall National Institute has opened a wireless communications laboratory in Dublin to research future deep technologies: Future RF, Future Access, Future Protocols, Future AI, and Future Quantum. The new facility, which is the first for Tyndall outside of Cork, will see the creation of 50 new research jobs by 2025.

The announcement comes one year on from the launch of the ambitious Tyndall 2025 plan, which aims to double the size and impact of the national ICT research institute.

The Wireless Communications Research Laboratory will be headed up by industry thought leader and acclaimed scientist Dr Holger Claussen, along with Dr Lester Ho and Dr Senad Bulja. All three are former researchers with the prestigious multi award-winning Nokia Bell Labs Ireland, where they created the foundations for many of Nokia’s next generation products and pioneered Small Cell Networks, now a $6.7bn/a market.

The team will initially be based at CONNECT – the world leading Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Future Networks and Communications, hosted at Trinity College Dublin. The CONNECT Centre includes Ireland’s top telecommunications researchers in ten higher education institutes around Ireland, including University College Cork.

CEO of Tyndall National Institute, Professor William Scanlon, whose own research and academic background is in the area of wireless communications, welcomed the recruitment of this world-class research team.

BT Group has announced plans to set up a new procurement company (or a ‘ProcureCo’) which will operate as a standalone entity from the rest of the organization. The new company will be based in Dublin, Ireland and headed by Cyril Pourrat.

AT&T picks Amdocs to power its 5G monetization

AT&T has selected Amdocs'cloud-native Openet 5G solution to monetize services over its 5G network. The 5G monetization solution is certified to run on AWS and Microsoft Azure. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Amdocs said its solution supports AT&T’s strategy to take full advantage of its 5G network by quickly launching new services to market such as gaming, mobile AR/VR, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications, remote health, etc.

Amdocs to acquire Openet for Digital BSS

Amdocs agreed to acquire Openet, a provider of 5G charging, policy and cloud technologies, in a deal valued at US$180 million.

Openet is a privately-owned company headquartered in Ireland, with offices in the US, Malaysia and Brazil and a global customer base.

Three Ireland launches 5G with Ericsson

 Three Ireland is launching its commercial 5G network using Ericsson's radio portfolio and virtualized 5G core products.

5G has been rolled out on 315 sites across Ireland, offering 35 percent population coverage with a further 500 sites set to be deployed in 2021.

Robert Finnegan, CEO of Three Ireland and Three UK said: “As Ireland’s largest mobile data network, carrying 68% of all mobile data, I am delighted that Three is now launching Ireland’s largest 5G network, which will be available to Three customers in every county from today. We started our 5G rollout with Ericsson last year, building our network to bring customers in both rural and urban areas the best possible experience of 5G from the very beginning, which includes providing superfast broadband to remote areas in Ireland. With our nationwide 5G footprint now in place and a variety of 5G enabled devices on the market, we believe now is the right time to launch.

HPE GreenLake Cloud is now hosted by Interxion in Europe

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) confirmed that its GreenLake cloud services will be hosted by Interxion in 13 European countries.

HPE Greenlake Cloud provides companies with the benefits of a managed cloud experience without the complexity of managing data centers, while maintaining ownership and control of their data and workloads.

The new offer is being piloted with Interxion in Ireland, with the intention to quickly expand to the UK, Germany, France and The Netherlands.

“At Interxion, we’ve been listening to our customers who have told us that they want to tap into the flexibility and convenience of the cloud, while alleviating the operational burden on IT systems,” said Séamus Dunne, Managing Director, Interxion Ireland. “Our agreement to launch HPE GreenLake cloud services hosted in our data centers improves speed and agility by increasing customers’ connectivity to public clouds while staying in control of cost, security and compliance without the need to invest in an on-premise data center, as they can deploy HPE GreenLake solutions in Interxion’s colocation data centers. ”
