Beijing's Capital Online picks Nokia's 7750 Service Router

Capital Online, a cloud computing service provider headquartered in Beijing, will deploy the Nokia 7750 Service Router (SR) and 7250 IXR interconnect router platforms to upgrade its IP backbone network.

The network upgrade entails that the converged backbone provides performance certainty for all traffic flows under all network conditions, the versatility to converge edge and core routing functions onto a common platform, smart traffic engineering with segment routing-MPLS, and granular QoS to address different traffic demands for reliable service delivery.

KT, NTT DOCOMO and Fujitsu test O-RAN in Korea

The KT Research and Development Center in Seoul, South Korea, has tested Fujitsu’s Open RAN based 5G base station equipment in trials for open fronthaul. NTT DOCOMO provided Fujitsu with technical support throughout the project. With the construction of this new test facility, KT will accelerate the introduction of Open RAN technology to Korea’s 5G network.

The three companies have concluded a Memorandum of Understanding centered on the introduction of software-defined virtualized RAN and RAN Intelligent Controllers (RICs).

The three companies agreed to cooperate towards further activities including the construction of an O-RAN test facility and multi-vendor interoperability testing in Korea.

KT is considering the introduction of multi-vendor Open RAN to reduce equipment procurement and construction costs and to achieve flexible network construction capabilities. To this end, KT and Fujitsu constructed an Open RAN verification facility and conducted testing for multi-vendor interoperability with O-RAN open fronthaul in October 2021.

Norway reports cut on Svalbard cable

Space Norway AS, which owns and operates a subsea cable system connecting mainland Norway with the archipelago of Svalbard, reported a fiber cut on Friday 7 January 2022. The cut is believed to have occurred between 130 and 230 km from Longyearbyen and in an area where the cable goes steeply into the deep sea.  A second cable is still in operation, but the system will have no further redundancy until a repair is completed. A cable-laying ship will be mobilized.

Svalbard is located about midway (74° to 81° north latitude) between the northern coast of Norway and the North Pole. The islands have a population of about 2,900 and the largest settlement is the town of Longyearbyen.

Atlantic Broadband rebrands as Breezeline

Atlantic Broadband, the eighth-largest cable operator in the U.S., has rebranded as Breezeline.

The rebranding follows the company’s acquisition of two cable systems in Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio in September 2021, which expanded the company’s serviceable households and businesses to more than 1.6 million.

Intel names Michelle Johnston Holthaus as GM of Client Computing

Intel has appointed Executive Vice President (EVP) Michelle Johnston Holthaus to lead the company’s Client Computing Group (CCG). She will be responsible for all aspects of running and growing the client business, including strategy, financial performance and product development for the full portfolio of client technologies and platforms designed to enable exceptional personal computing experiences.

A 25-year Intel veteran, Holthaus brings a deep understanding of Intel’s customers and the client computing business based on her current role as EVP and general manager of the Sales, Marketing and Communications Group, a role she has held since 2017, and her previous experience as the head of global client computing sales. Earlier roles in Holthaus’ tenure include leadership of the Microsoft global account team; management of channel products; central marketing and operations for the PC client group; and management of the reseller product group. Holthaus joined Intel in 1996.

OIF adopts Common Management Interface Specification (CMIS)

OIF has adopted the Common Management Interface Specification (CMIS) work initiated by the Quad Small Form Factor Pluggable Double Density (QSFP-DD) Multi Source Agreement (MSA).  

CMIS may be used by pluggable or on-board modules, such as QSFP Double Density (QSFP-DD), OSFP, COBO, QSFP, and future module developments like co-packaged optics with host to module management communication based on a two-wire interface. This specification is targeted to systems manufacturers, system integrators and suppliers of CMIS compliant optical and copper modules. 

“The QSFP-DD MSA initiated the CMIS effort to address an industry need for commonality in managing pluggable modules, and it has been broadly and successfully adopted across the industry,” said Mark Nowell, Cisco, QSFP-DD MSA Group founding member and MSA co-chair. “OIF is very well suited to maintain and extend the development of this effort and I look forward to seeing their progress.”

T-Mobile US signs 12-year lease with Crown Castle

T-Mobile US signed a new 12-year agreement with Crown Castle International to support the continued build-out of T-Mobile's nationwide 5G network with increased access to Crown Castle's towers and small cell locations.

T-Mobile US added 5.5 million postpaid customers in 2021

T-Mobile US reported its highest postpaid net customer additions and postpaid account net additions in company history for full-year 2021. Postpaid net customer additions of 5.5 million for full-year 2021 exceeded the high end of the company’s annual guidance range and are expected to lead the industry for the 7th consecutive year, based on industry consensus expectations. In the fourth quarter, T-Mobile reported 1.8 million postpaid net customer additions, its highest fourth quarter in company history, and 315 thousand postpaid account net additions, the highest fourth quarter in the last four years.

T-Mobile US also announce the following data points:

  • Postpaid account net additions were 315 thousand in Q4 2021, the highest Q4 in four years and reached a record 1.2 million for the full year 2021, more than doubled year-over-year.
  • Net customer additions were 1.8 million in Q4 2021 and 5.8 million for the full year 2021, the highest annual number in five years. The total customer count increased to a record-high of 108.7 million.
  • Postpaid net customer additions were 1.8 million in Q4 2021 and 5.5 million for the full year 2021, which exceeded the company’s most recent annual guidance range of 5.1 to 5.3 million.
  • Postpaid phone net customer additions were 844 thousand in Q4 2021 and 2.9 million for the full year 2021. Postpaid phone churn was 1.10% in Q4 2021 as the company ramped up its Sprint customer integration and 0.98% for the full year 2021.
  • Postpaid other net customer additions were 906 thousand in Q4 2021 and 2.6 million for the full year 2021, which included High Speed Internet net customer additions of 224 thousand in Q4 2021 and 546 thousand for the full year 2021. T-Mobile ended the year with 646 thousand High Speed Internet customers, exceeding its year-end goal of 500 thousand customers.
  • Prepaid net customer additions were 49 thousand in Q4 2021 and 342 thousand for the full year 2021, more than doubled year-over-year. Prepaid churn was 3.01% in Q4 2021 and 2.83% for the full year 2021.
  • Customer results for the fourth quarter and full-year 2021 are preliminary and subject to change pending completion of year-end closing review procedures. The following table includes the impact of the Sprint merger on a prospective basis from the close date of April 1, 2020.

SpaceX completes 35th Starlink mission

In its first mission for 2022 and 35th for the Starlink program, SpaceX launched 49 Starlink satellites to low Earth orbit from Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. 

This was the fourth launch and landing of this Falcon 9 first stage booster, which previously launched GPS III-4, GPS III-5, and Inspiration4.


Intel's Alder Lake processors target IoT and Edge

Intel launched its 12th Gen Intel Core processors (code-named Alder Lake S-series and H-series) for Internet of Things (IoT) and edge applications.

The 12th Gen Intel Core desktop processors for IoT are up to 1.36 times faster in single-thread performance1, up to 1.35 times faster in multithread performance, up to 1.94 times faster in graphics performance and up to 2.81 times faster in GPU image classification inference performance4 compared with 10th Gen Intel Core processors. 

The 12th Gen Intel Core desktop processors for IoT contain Intel UHD Graphics 770 driven by Intel Xe architecture supporting display virtualization and up to four independent displays. Support for PCIe 5.0/PCIe 4.0 and DDR5/DDR4 memory combined with security and manageability features and AI enablement help boost productivity and fuel future innovation in IoT applications. IoT SKUs feature up to 16 cores and 24 threads at 35W to 65W TDP, real-time capabilities, long-life availability and long-term software support.

The 12th Gen Intel Core mobile processors for IoT have been estimated to be up to 1.04 times faster in single-thread performance5, up to 1.18 times faster in multithread performance and up to 2.29 times faster in graphics performance7 compared with 11th Gen Intel Core processors. These SKUs feature up to 14 cores and 20 threads at 35W to 45W TDP.

Qorvo debuts wideband Wi-Fi front-end module for 5.1 to 7.1 GHz

Qorvo introduced the first wideband Wi-Fi front-end module (FEM) covering the 5.1 GHz to 7.1 GHz bands for customer premises equipment (CPE). This enables full-frequency support for both Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E enterprise solutions.

ADTRAN stockholders approve merger with ADVA

Stockholders of ADTRAN approved the business combination with ADVA Optical Networking SE by an overwhelming majority. 

The company said the next major milestone will be the close of the initial acceptance period for the tender of ADVA shares at midnight (CET) on January 12, 2022, and for the combination to be successful, at least 70% of the ADVA shares must be tendered by this time. The parties also continue to work with the relevant authorities to obtain the required foreign direct investment approvals and are confident that such approvals will be obtained in due course.

ADTRAN/ADVA combination reaches major milestones

ADTRAN announced that the acceptance of the exchange offer regarding the proposed business combination between ADTRAN and ADVA Optical Networking SE has been recommended by ADVA's management and supervisory boards and that key antitrust approvals have been received.On November 23, 2021, the management and supervisory boards of ADVA issued a joint reasoned statement recommending that ADVA shareholders accept the exchange offer for Acorn HoldCo shares....

NTT develops quantum light source operating over optical fiber

NTT, in collaboration with the University of Tokyo, and RIKEN, unveiled an optical fiber-coupled quantum light source (squeezed light source) with the potential to serve as a building block for fault-tolerant, rack-sized, universal optical quantum computers.

Squeezed light is described as a non-classical light that has an even number of photons and squeezed quantum noise. It is used to generate quantum entanglement. NTT said squeezed light also plays an extremely important role in quantum error correction, since quantum error correction is made possible by utilizing the parity of the number of photons. 

In this project, the researchers sought a fiber-coupled squeezed light source with highly squeezed quantum noise and photon number parity that is maintained even in high-photon-number components (a squeezing level of over 65% is required to generate time-domain multiple quantum entanglement (two-dimensional clustered states) that can be used for large-scale quantum computation.) 

The researchers developed a new optical fiber-coupled quantum light source that operates at optical communication wavelengths. By combining it with optical fiber components, the researchers ached continuous-wave squeezed light with more than 75% squeezed quantum noise with more than 6 THz sideband frequency even in an optical fiber closed system for the first time. This means that the key device in optical quantum computers has been realized in a form that is compatible with optical fibers while maintaining the broadband nature of light. This will enable the development of an optical quantum computer in a stable and maintenance-free system using optical fibers and optical communication devices. 



NTT claims that by using a low-loss optical fiber as a propagation medium for flying optical qubits, large-scale quantum entangled states will be able to be generated freely and stably in combination with optical communication devices. Specifically, with only four squeezed light sources, two optical fibers of different lengths (optical delay lines), and five beam splitters, large-scale two-dimensional clustered states can be generated that are necessary for universal quantum computations.

NEC contributes packet core to DOCOMO's 5G SA services launch

NEC provided its packet core (5GC) and base stations (5G RUs, CU/DU) for the 5G standalone (SA)-based services that NTT DOCOMO launched commercially on December 13, 2021.

NEC's 5G Core for SA enables flexible operation for a variety of services thanks to its cloud-native architecture, featuring container and separation of Control and User Plane (CUPS). In addition, drawing on network slicing technology, NEC's 5GC for SA helps create customized networks on demand according to the different requirements for 5G services that include eMBB(enhanced Mobile Broadband), mMTC (massive Machine Type Communication), and URLLC (Ultra-Reliable and Low Latency Communications).

NEC confirmed that its 5G CU/DU, which was previously operating as non-standalone (NSA) on DOCOMO's commercial network, has been seamlessly migrated to 5G SA, simply by a software upgrade in conjunction with the aforementioned 5GC.

Google Cloud acquires Siemplify for security orchestration

Google Cloud has acquired Siemplify, a leading independent provider of security orchestration, automation and response (SOAR), in a deal reportedly valued at approximately US$500 million.  Siemplify was started in 2015 an is based in New York and Tel Aviv, Israel. Neither company confirmed the price.

The cloud-native Siemplify platform enables enterprise and Service Provider security teams to manage their operations from end to end, including responding to cyber threats with speed and precision. In 2020, the platform ingested hundreds of millions of alerts for customers and decreased caseload by as much as 80%.

The company says that part of its “secret sauce” is that the platform models data arriving from an organization’s collection of security tools into a graphical form, which expresses the meaningful components of each alert – for example, the source IP address in a phishing email. Machine learning can then easily “crawl” these graphs to isolate relationships and cluster together similar alerts into rich, aggregated cases.

AT&T added 270,000 fiber subscribers in Q4

AT&T added approximately 270,000 fiber subscribers in Q4 2021. Full-year 2021, fiber net adds totaled about 1.0 million, the fourth consecutive year in which the company has added 1 million or more fiber subscribers. AT&T ended the year with an additional 2.6 million fiber customer locations , compared to its prior expectation of about 2.5 million.   

At this week's Citi’s AppsEconomy Conference, AT&T provided the following additional data points for Q4:

  • For the fourth quarter of 2021, AT&T delivered total postpaid net adds of 1.3 million, including approximately 880,000 postpaid phones.
  • For the full-year 2021, postpaid phone net adds were 3.2 million, AT&T’s highest annual postpaid phone net adds in more than a decade as the company continues to benefit from strong network performance and its disciplined and consistent go-to-market strategy. 
  • AT&T ended the year with approximately 73.8 million total global HBO Max and HBO subscribers, ahead of management’s prior guidance that end-of-year subscribers would be at the high end of its 70 million to 73 million subscriber target.

STACK plans a new 216MW flagship Ashburn campus

In direct response to hyperscale client demands, STACK Infrastructure unveiled plans for a new 216MW campus in Ashburn, Virginia. 

STACK said the new 80-acre Loudoun site will offer massive scalability with three buildings, totaling 216MW of capacity and nearly 1 million square feet. The campus will be powered by 100% renewable energy and served by Dominion. 

The first phase is expected to be ready by Q3 of 2023.

The announcement comes in the wake of STACK’s recent expansions at its campus in Prince William County, including the groundbreaking of a 72MW total second phase announced just two months ago and already under construction for 2022 delivery.

Dish Wireless names John Swieringa as president and COO

John Swieringa has been named President and Chief Operating Officer of DISH Wireless. 

He will be responsible for all operational aspects of DISH's wireless business including the deployment and management of DISH's virtualized, O-RAN 5G broadband network. Swieringa also will continue to lead DISH's retail wireless business, and oversee day-to-day wireless activities. Swieringa's direct reports include: Stephen Bye, EVP and Chief Commercial Officer, Dave Mayo, EVP of Network Development, Marc Rouanne, EVP and Chief Network Officer, and Stephen Stokols, EVP of Retail Wireless. Swieringa will report to Charlie Ergen.
