Huawei updates its 5G RAN portfolio

At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Huawei announced major upgrades to its 5G portfolio, especially products and solutions offering multi-antenna technology for all 5G bands. 

Highlights:

  • A 400 MHz Ultra-Wideband 64T64R Massive MIMO product that supports the entire C-band, enabling operators to deploy their multi-segment spectrum on just one module to reduce the number of devices. One module can be shared by multiple operators. This allows them to overcome the insufficient spectrum that may occur in single-operator cases and greatly improves user experience, while also considerably reducing the footprint and site power consumption of antenna modules compared with separate deployments.
  • A lightweight 64T64R Massive MIMO base station, with a single module weighing as little as 19 kg. Huawei's new 64T products can be transported and installed with just one person while also delivering on performance, significantly improving construction efficiency.
  • BladeAAU a 64T A+P Solution that integrates active and passive antennas into a single box, making it the first choice for single-pole scenarios. It is the optimal approach for overcoming scenarios with limited space, which have become a common headache among operators worldwide. BladeAAU has made it easier for operators in Switzerland to acquire new sites and rapidly deploy 5G networks. By supporting a higher mounting height, BladeAAU has helped operators in China expand coverage and improve 5G user experience. Through continuous innovation, Huawei unveiled its latest BladeAAU Pro — the only one of its kind that is 64T capable while maintaining a high level of A+P integration. The active module is improved with 64 channels over the previous 32 and support for a 320 W transmit power and 200 MHz bandwidth, which provide extra flexibility for operators to meet higher capacity. The passive module is also improved with port specifications further upgraded to 2L6H to facilitate full sub-3GHz coverage.
  • BladeRRU Pro RF Unit that supports three low and three medium bands. With traditional RF solutions, one band corresponds to one module, which aggravates the insufficient antenna space, difficult site acquisition, and high cost of deployment and maintenance. Huawei's BladeRRU Pro is the first to integrate three low bands/three medium bands, reducing the required number of FDD RRUs for full-band coverage by two thirds and making investments in multi-band deployment more efficient. The low-frequency integration module has been adopted commercially in multiple countries. Huawei provides a SingleCell software solution for BladeRRU Pro to coordinate scheduling between low and medium bands, enabling more resources to serve low-band UEs at cell edges. Commercial use of the solution at multiple sites showed that SingleCell can nearly double the average seen in experience indicators for these UEs.
  • A FDD Massive MIMO product.  Though Massive MIMO has already been successfully commercialized on TDD bands to ensure premium experience and high capacity in 5G networks, FDD Massive MIMO is struggling amid the challenge to balance device dimensions, weight, and performance. The product combines a meta-material array design and ultra-miniature passive intermodulation (PIM)-free filter technology. The FDD Massive MIMO device is less than 500 mm in width but carries engineering specifications comparable to those of TDD Massive MIMO. Its cell capacity is five to six times higher than 4T4R while providing similar in-depth coverage performance as that of sub-1 GHz bands.

NETGEAR's new WiFi 6 AP is Tri-band, PoE powered, mesh-capable and cloud manageable

 NETGEAR unveiled a fourth member in its Insight Managed WiFi 6 Access Points.

The Insight Managed WiFi 6 AX6000 Tri-band Multi-gig Access Point delivers up to 40% higher speeds to each connected device as compared to WiFi 5 (802.11ac). WAX630 interoperates with other NETGEAR Insight Managed Access Points, including the existing WiFi 5 (WAC510, WAC540) and WiFi 6 (WAX610, WAX610Y, WAX620) models. Additionally, WAX630 allows access points to be connected to each other using Instant Mesh2 - a NETGEAR wireless backhaul technology. The WAX 630 comes equipped with two Ethernet ports - one Gigabit Ethernet port and a Power-over-Ethernet (PoE++) 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port.

The new AP is suited for environments with open spaces where there is a need to provide WiFi connectivity to a large number of concurrent users, such as schools, community colleges, mid-sized manufacturing facilities, warehouses and office premises of mid-sized companies. The WAX630 also supports 12-streams (4x4 on each band) with each unit capable of delivering up to 6.0 Gbps of aggregate data throughput with all three bands supporting WiFi 6. Specifically designed for high-density deployments, the industry unique tri-band solution enables either one dedicated band for wireless backhaul with two front-haul bands for client devices, or a 2.5GbE wired backhaul with three front-haul bands for client device connection – thus making WAX630 amongst the most versatile and high-performance access points in the industry.


QCT builds a vRAN with Intel and Radisys

Quanta Cloud Technology (QCT) announced OmniRAN, its virtualized radio access network (vRAN) solution developed with Intel and Radisys. The solution uses Intel FlexRAN , a cloud-enabled wireless access virtual network functions reference implementation, and Radisys Connect 5G RAN software, a disaggregated RAN architecture for promoting 4G, 5G and IoT to build a cloud-native vRAN based on 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable Processors running on QCT EGX63IS-1U servers.

Intel’s vRAN dedicated accelerator, ACC100, is used for forward error correction (FEC) and Intel’s 5G optimized network adapter, codenamed Westport Channel, is also implemented for accurate time synchronization without the added complexity or expenses that come with specialty timing hardware. This validated combination on QCT EGX63IS-1U extends distributed unit (DU) capabilities to support multi-cell and multi-RRU 5G scenarios, delivering reliable performance for various network workloads.


QCT says OmniRAN has already been deployed in smart manufacturing use cases such as safety AI for environment control, high-resolution streaming for quality control, AR goggles for maintenance and repair, and autonomous guided vehicles (AGV) for equipment transport.

MWC Barcelona opens as an in-person event

 Mobile World Congress officially opened in Barcelona as both an in-person and virtual event with the theme of "Connected Impact".

Kicking off MWC Barcelona 2021 with a keynote address, Mats Granryd, Director General of GSMA, said: "We are excited to be back to business, back in Barcelona and back together. This year's theme, Connected Impact, puts front and centre the power of mobile technology to affect meaningful change. With arguably our strongest speaker line-up yet, innovative product launches, and the release of the GSMA Intelligence Global Mobile Economy Report 2021, we're celebrating the resilience and progress the industry has made despite a year of extraordinary challenges."

Highlights of the week are expected to include a keynote from Elon Musk and a performance by Jon Bon Jovi live from TelcoDR's booth.

Some notable items from the GSMA's newly published Global Mobile Economy Report 2021:

  • By the end of 2025, 5G will account for just over a fifth of total mobile connections, and more than two in five people around the world will live within reach of a 5G network.
  • In 2021, 5G networks have been launched for the first time in Indonesia, Kenya, and just this month, Tajikistan.
  • Although 4G has significant headroom for growth; Globally, 4G is expected to peak at just under 60% by 2023 as 5G begins to gain traction in new markets. In leading 5G markets such as China, South Korea, and the US, 4G has peaked and, in some cases, begun to decline.




NVIDIA Aerial 5G platform extends support for Arm

NVIDIA is extending support for Arm-based CPUs in the NVIDIA Aerial A100 AI-on-5G platform, bringing more choice to the 5G ecosystem. The idea is to enable leading OEMs to offer industry-standard servers running Arm-based CPUs and NVIDIA AI Enterprise software with Aerial 5G.

In April, NVIDIA announced partnerships with Fujitsu, Google Cloud, Mavenir, Radisys and Wind River to develop solutions for NVIDIA’s AI-on-5G platform.

These NVIDIA-Certified Systems will create a simplified path to building and deploying self-hosted vRAN that converges AI and 5G capabilities across private enterprises, network equipment companies, software makers and telecommunications services providers.

The NVIDIA Aerial A100 AI-on-5G computing platform uses the NVIDIA Aerial software development kit and will incorporate 16 Arm Cortex-A78 processors into the NVIDIA BlueField-3 A100 DPUs. 

“We’re bringing together two worlds — AI of computing and 5G of telecommunications — to create a software-defined platform for AI on 5G,” said Ronnie Vasishta, senior vice president of Telecom at NVIDIA. “Now supporting Arm, our growing Aerial platform is accelerating AI-on-5G everywhere.”

“This convergence of edge AI and 5G technology is driving the need for more diverse compute than ever before,” said Chris Bergey, senior vice president and general manager of the Infrastructure Line of Business at Arm. “BlueField-3 expands the Arm ecosystem by offering a combination of NVIDIA accelerated computing and Arm performance to enable network providers more choice in how they create and deploy 5G systems.”

At Mobile World Congress, a contingent of mobile communications operators and vendors announced their collective support for 5G mmWave technology globally. 5G mmWave uses abundant spectrum resources in frequencies above 24 GHz to complement sub-6 GHz rollouts.

Qualcomm intros 5G DU accelerator card

Qualcomm introduced its 5G DU X100 PCIe inline accelerator card with concurrent Sub-6 GHz and mmWave baseband support.

The accelerator card is designed to ease of deployment with O-RAN fronthaul and 5G NR layer 1 High (L1 High) processing. It plugs into standard Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) servers to offload CPUs from latency-sensitive and compute-intensive 5G baseband functions such as demodulation, beamforming, channel coding, and Massive MIMO computation needed for high-capacity deployments. For use in public or private networks, this accelerator card aims to give carriers the ability to increase overall network capacity and fully realize the transformative potential of 5G.

Marvell debuts OCTEON 10 DPU

Marvell introduced its new OCTEON 10 DPU for accelerating security, networking, and storage workloads required by demanding 5G, cloud, carrier and enterprise datacenter applications. 

The OCTEON 10 DPU is designed on a 5nm process and incorporates Arm Neoverse N2 cores, as well as the first inline artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) hardware acceleration, the first integrated 1 terabit switch and the first vector packet processing (VPP) hardware accelerators.

“To meet and exceed the growing data processing requirements for network, storage, and security workloads, Marvell focused on significant DPU innovations across compute, hardware accelerators, and high speed I/O,” said John Sakamoto, vice president of Marvell’s Infrastructure Processors Business Unit. “The OCTEON 10 brings compute leadership, supports networking and security workloads exceeding 400G, and incorporates leading edge I/O including DDR5 and PCIe 5.0.”

“A significant amount of compute is required to process the deluge of data generated from cloud to edge devices today,” said Chris Bergey, senior vice president and general manager, Infrastructure Line of Business, Arm. “The combination of leading-edge 5nm technology, Neoverse N2 cores and OCTEON 10 will enable Marvell to take on complex workloads, and showcase its strengths in DPU computing.”

Verizon to build 5G core on hybrid cloud with IBM and Red Hat

Verizon has chosen IBM and Red Hat to help build and deploy an open hybrid cloud platform with automated operations and service orchestration as the foundation of its 5G core.

IBM Global Business Services is also integrating Telco Network Cloud solutions into Verizon’s Service Orchestration Platform to automate and manage services much more efficiently. This integration is designed to improve the service quality, predictably and automation of virtual network functions and comply with Open Network Automation Platform interfaces.

Vodafone tests single 1T clear channel with Nokia

Vodafone Turkey has tested a 1T (terabit) clear-channel IP connection using Nokia's 7950 XRS routers with terabit interfaces powered by Nokia’s FP4 chipset. Nokia’s FP4 terabit linecard offers two 1T ports and demonstrated deployment readiness by carrying test traffic on Vodafone Turkey’s network. 

Nokia said the trial is part of an ongoing modernization effort to transform Vodafone Turkey’s IP network. Nokia is delivering a multi-access mobile transport architecture that will enable the operator to evolve its transport infrastructure in a changing industry. Nokia’s 7250 IXR interconnect router and FP4-based 7750 Service Router portfolios have already been deployed for the delivery of high capacity, low latency 5G services to Vodafone Turkey’s customers. Nokia’s platforms support the features and protocols that will enable SDN control automation and optimization of applications and use cases.

Brazil's Mercantil bank connects data centers with Padtec DWDM

Banco Mercantil do Brasil is increasing the transmission capacity of its DWDM networks in Belo Horizonte using a solution provided by Padtec.

Padtec supplied transponders and route protection systems to connect the bank's data centers in Belo Horizonte. The project’s technical highlight is the use of the family of 200 Gbps transponders developed by the company for the transport of multiple 16 Gb/s data channels, in a network protocol called Fiber Channel, which is suitable for interconnect applications between servers and data storage systems.

The partnership between the companies also includes the provision of services, by Padtec, for managing the operation and maintenance of the Mercantil do Brasil bank’s optical networks.

Telstra sets distance record for 5G SA -- 113km

 Telstra, in collaboration with Ericsson, completed a 5G Standalone (5G SA) data call of a record distance of 113 km.  The call connected to a Telstra commercial mobile site in Gippsland, Victoria using a commercially available smartphone.

Boingo launches Private Networks Service

Boingo Wireless has launched an enterprise private networks offering that provides dedicated, secure wireless connectivity with enhanced capacity, control and coverage. It is currently being trialed at leading airports, sports and entertainment venues nationwide.

Boingo is offering a network as a service (NaaS) model. It can be implemented with 5G, LTE, CBRS, Wi-Fi 6, multi-access edge computing (MEC) and work seamlessly alongside neutral host DAS and Wi-Fi.

Celona adds eSIM provisioning for private mobile networks

ADVA intros Ensemble SmartWAN with 6WIND

ADVA launched its fully-featured Ensemble SmartWAN secure networking solution -- a turnkey solution that delivers dynamic virtual routing, centralized management, and full visibility of network topology.

Iron Mountain to sell and lease back its UK storage centers

Iron Mountain has sold a portfolio of five storage centers in the UK to Intermediate Capital Group (ICG), generating gross proceeds of approximately $178 million, based on current exchange rates. The transaction, totaling 550,000 square feet, is a sale-leaseback transaction with the properties located in the greater London area. Iron Mountain will remain in these facilities under an initial twelve-year lease term, with options to renew up to an additional 20 years.

“With our strong development pipeline together with highly attractive market valuations for industrial assets, we are pleased to continue our capital recycling program,” said Barry Hytinen, executive vice president and CFO at Iron Mountain. “The sale-leaseback of these assets allows us to generate significant investable proceeds while essentially maintaining long-term control of the facilities. On a leverage neutral basis, we estimate this transaction will generate nearly $140 million of capital, which we intend to invest in higher growth areas, including our data center business.”

Huawei deploys massive MIMO in Chengdu airport

China Mobile has deployed Huawei's 5G distributed Massive MIMO solution inside Chengdu Tianfu International Airport to build the first Gigabit 5G airport in China. 

Huawei says the user-perceived rate across the check-in areas exceeds 1 Gbps, with the single-user rate increasing by 26% on average over common 5G networks up to a peak of 1.25 Gbps. Significant improvement was also displayed in both the perceived rate and overall network capacity in multi-user scenarios. 

Chengdu Tianfu International Airport is the second international air hub in Southwest China's Sichuan Province and has the capacity to support 40 million passenger trips, 700,000 tons of cargo and mail, and 320,000 aircraft movements annually. 

Luis Ubiñas elected to AT&T Board of Directors

Luis Ubiñas has been elected to AT&T's board of directors, effective immediately. This brings the number of directors on AT&T’s board to 13. He will serve on the board’s Public Policy and Corporate Reputation committee.

Ubiñas, 58, has had a career spanning business, government and the nonprofit sector. He served as a senior partner at McKinsey & Company, as President of the Ford Foundation, and as an appointee to both the U.S. Competitiveness Committee of the Export-Import Bank and the International Trade Commission. Over the last several years, he has been an investor, advisor and board member. He is currently the lead director of Electronic Arts; serves on the board of Tanger, the publicly traded REIT; and advises several private and pre-IPO companies.
