ADVA intros Ensemble SmartWAN with 6WIND

ADVA launched its fully-featured Ensemble SmartWAN secure networking solution -- a turnkey solution that delivers dynamic virtual routing, centralized management, and full visibility of network topology.  

The new Ensemble SmartWAN, which is integrated into ADVA’s Ensemble network functions virtualization (NFV) suite, features zero-touch provisioning for easy deployment and temperature-hardened servers.

The Ensemble SmartWAN vRouter application is a separately licensable option on the Ensemble Connector platform. SmartWAN vRouter utilizes 6WIND’s Turbo Router software-based network appliance to provide a compact, high-performance embedded routing engine.

SmartWAN Secure Networking leverages Ensemble Connector and Virtualization Director to build and manage overlay networks via secure static and dynamic VPNs. Ensemble SmartWAN delivers key benefits for service providers, who will be able to unlock more value in their infrastructure platform. It empowers them to support new use cases and offer critical SD-WAN services at a much lower entry cost compared to standalone SD-WAN applications.

ADVA and 6Wind partner on lightweight uCPE

ADVA and 6WIND are collaborating to deliver a high-performance and lightweight uCPE solution built on ADVA’s Ensemble Connector and including 6WIND routing technology. The solution eliminates the need to treat the Turbo Router as an off-board virtual network function (VNF) that would be orchestrated by an external MANO platform. The initial configuration of the Turbo Router will be handled via integrated templates driven by Ensemble Virtualization Director. Ensemble Virtualization Director is also responsible for providing ongoing management of the Turbo Router installation, including telemetry, logs and alarm event collection.


The joint solution has already been selected by the German CSP WiTCOM to power its edge cloud smart city initiative, enabling services including IoT, traffic control and surveillance.

“This partnership with 6WIND gives our customers an optimized solution for deploying access uCPE platforms on white box servers. 6WIND announces vRouter 2.0 with NETCONF/YANG Management

6WIND released its vRouter 2.0 software featuring a new CLI and NETCONF/YANG-based management engine.

Highlights:

  • Configuration: Offers both traditional, CLI-based management and management based on YANG, and NETCONF APIs for integration with higher level orchestrators and management frameworks.
  • Deployment: Includes packaged images for bare metal, KVM, VMware and Amazon Web Services (AWS), and leverages the Linux cloud-init and Ansible features to enable customization of the system.
  • Monitoring: Supports the traditional SNMP and syslog mechanisms, plus data plane telemetry through sFlow, and graphical analytics with time series data base, such as Grafana.

6WIND's vRouters are available in bare metal and virtual machine (VM) configurations and run on commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) servers. They are available in Turbo Router and Turbo IPsec software packages with license options from 1G to 100G throughput and 1,000 to 100,000 IPsec VPN tunnels.

6WIND supplies vRouters to Minorisa, an ISP in Spain

Minorisa de Sistemas Informáticos y de Gestión, an Internet Service Provider based in Spain, has migrated its infrastructure and adopted 6WIND's vRouters as core routers for its network.

After running out of throughput capacity for its legacy hardware routers, Minorisa evaluated

6WIND's 40G Turbo Router software appliances replaced legacy Cisco hardware routers that ran out of capacity. 6WIND said its vRouters also helped Minorisa's broader architecture transition to white box networking by replacing its legacy Cisco and MikroTik hardware with software.

6WIND's vRouter delivers performance up to 12 Mpps per core of IP Forwarding, 18 Gbps per core of IPsec, up to 1 million routes and 100,000 IPsec tunnels. Performance scales with the numbers of cores and hardware advancements, allowing Minorisa to move from 40G to 100G without redesigning its network.

6WIND, Advantech and Cloudify demo vRouter for White Box Networking

At this week's Mobile World Congress, 6WIND is demonstrating high-performance vRouter use cases for white box networking with partners Advantech and Cloudify.

The demo infrastructure includes:
  • vRouter: 6WIND Turbo Router and Turbo IPsec are routing and IPsec VPN software network appliances to be deployed in bare metal environments or as Virtual Machines (VMs) on COTS servers with licenses for 1 – 100G throughput in a single software instance.
  • COTS Server: Advantech's SKY-8101 offers an innovative white box networking hardware infrastructure in a short depth, 1RU single-socket Intel Xeon Scalable Processor server with a wide choice of GbE, 10GbE & 40GbE connectivity. 6WIND's vRouter software appliances are deployed as VMs and scale linearly with the assigned processor cores.
  • Management & Orchestration: Cloudify Manager is serving the VNF Manager and NFV Orchestrator functions for the 6WIND vRouter. 6WIND's virtual appliances are instantiated on OpenStack, and OSPF routing and IPsec VPN tunnels are configured, deployed and orchestrated by Cloudify Manager with TOSCA based templates. The solution is then monitored by Grafana out of the box or any other pluggable monitoring platform of choice.

6WIND offer replacement for Brocade Vyatta Virtual Routers

6WIND, the Paris-based developer of high-performance packet processing software and software appliances for Commercial-off-the-Shelf (COTS) servers, has extended its Brocade vRouter replacement program through the first half of 2018.

The 6WIND Turbo Router, which is a high-performance software router for bare metal and virtual machine deployments, can be used as an alternative to Brocade’s Vyatta vRouter, which is now end-of-support. 6WIIND's offer now also applies to VyOS virtual routers. The 6WIND Turbo Router is based on DPDK (Data Plane Development Kit) for performance. It separates its full-featured data plane and control plane for use case flexibility. Management options include CLI, XML or Linux-based tools.

Mavenir and 6WIND collaborate on 4G/5G, NFV

6WIND, a provider of high-performance networking software, announced that Mavenir based in Richardson, Texas, which focuses on enabling network transformation for service providers, has extended its long-term partnership to deliver advanced solutions for 4G, 5G and network functions virtualisation (NFV) services such as media resource function (MRF), evolved packet core (EPC), virtual RAN (vRAN) and session border controller (SBC) products.

Under the expanded agreement, to enable high packet processing capacity and performance across its next-generation telecom networking solutions Mavenir has extended its license agreement with 6WIND to include the 6WINDGate TCP stack.

In addition to the 6WIND software, Mavenir is able to leverage 6WIND's Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK) expertise, network software design skills and licensed support. The TCP stack addition complements a range of DPDK-based Layer 2 to Layer 4 6WINDGate stacks that are widely incorporated in the Mavenir product suite.

Mavenir's expanded partnership specifically provides access to the following 6WIND software and features:

1.         Networking performance acceleration and portability, including 6WINDGate source code for Linux networking; accelerated Layer 2 to 4 networking stacks for application performance and portability across hardware platforms; and the TCP termination module for scaling TCP-based application performance.

2.         Virtualisation readiness, enabling a smooth upgrade path from bare metal to virtual deployments utilising the same software.



  • Recently, 6WIND announced its Secure Site-to-Site VPN solution for data centre inter-connection, based on the 6WIND Turbo IPsec software for networking at rates of 10 Gbit/s and beyond. 6WIND Turbo IPsec is designed to enable IPsec VPNs on COTS servers with claimed costs of less than 50% that of legacy hardware systems. 6WIND Turbo IPsec can be deployed on bare metal servers or in a virtual machine to support the transition to virtualisation

6WIND Introduces Security Gateway for 4G/5G

6WIND, a high-performance networking software company, announced its next generation security gateway solution based on its Turbo IPsec software and designed for 4G and 5G mobile infrastructure applications.

6WIND's new solution leverages the company's Turbo IPsec software, which is widely deployed in mobile and fixed telecom infrastructure for 4G/LTE to cost-effectively enable IPsec VPNs on commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) servers. 6WIND Turbo IPsec can be deployed as a bare metal solution or in a virtual machine, providing the same functionality and performance, and is designed to facilitate the transition to virtualisation and NFV.

6WIND noted that as 4G/5G data and voice converge to common IP-based networks, new security and performance challenges arise and mobile infrastructure, specifically mobile backhaul, must be able to cost-effectively meet both the performance requirements and protect against threats associated with untrusted IP networks. In addition, operators are transitioning to virtualisation to reduce costs and enhance service flexibility.

6WIND's next generation security gateway (SeGW) solution is designed to address these challenges via features including:

1.Enabling linear scalability of performance, regardless of deployment configuration - bare metal or virtualised.

2. Support for 12 Gbit/s of encrypted IPsec traffic per core, or more than 100 Gbit/s on a single Intel processor.

3.Capacity for up to 100,000 IKE tunnels, with the ability to establish up to 1,000 tunnels per second.

4. Provides a virtualised SeGW appliance offering support for Linux KVM, VMware ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisors.

5. High availability via link failure detection and failover mechanisms, combined with IPsec session synchronisation, enabling local and geo-redundancy without service interruption.

6WIND Integrates with Mirantis OpenStack for NFV

6WIND announced integration with Mirantis OpenStack to simplify joint customer deployments for high performance data centers and Network Function Virtualization Infrastructure (NFVI).

Specifically, 6WIND Virtual Accelerator, which is hypervisor acceleration software, will integrate an OpenStack Fuel plugin for increased application throughput and efficiency in KVM environments. Both companies have worked together to release a Mirantis certified 6WIND Virtual Accelerator Fuel plugin. Developed in open source, Fuel provides an intuitive, GUI-driven experience for deployment and management of a variety of OpenStack distributions and plugins.

Based on DPDK, 6WIND Virtual Accelerator provides a packet processing solution for a full-featured and high performance virtual networking infrastructure allowing:

  • High performance I/Os leveraging DPDK, with multi-vendor NIC support
  • High performance virtual switching (Open vSwitch and Linux bridge) and networking (Overlays, Filtering/NAT, IP Forwarding, IPsec)
  • Support for existing workloads through standard Virtio drivers

ALU Builds Out vRAN portfolio with Red Hat, Advantech, 6Wind

Alcatel-Lucent announced collaboration agreements with Red Hat, Advantech and 6WIND. The partnerships are aimed at accelerating the delivery of commercial virtualized radio access network (vRAN) products.

Alcatel-Lucent is trialling its near-commercial vRAN with leading service providers in North America, Asia and Europe using a platform that consists of 6WIND, Advantech and Red Hat hardware and software. In 2016 Alcatel-Lucent will expand these trials using the CloudBand NFV™ platform to onboard and manage applications.

Some key points:

  • Alcatel-Lucent and Red Hat are expanding their existing collaboration on CloudBand and Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform to jointly enhance NFV-based features and better address the needs of the telecommunications market with open source. This includes the integration of Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform,  and Red Hat Ceph Storage within Alcatel-Lucent’s vRAN offering.
  • Advantech is supplying its Packetarium XLc PAC-6009, a high-density carrier-grade blade server with switching infrastructure that supports all processing, storage and switching elements in a compact size.  Advantech’s PAC-6009 server is ‘NEBS compliant’ for the North American market and fits in a standard rack to simplify network introduction.
  • 6WIND will supply its 6WINDGate product offering a variety of networking and security protocols and features to allow Alcatel-Lucent to optimize the performance of its vRAN technology.
  • Alcatel-Lucent is also working with a number of service providers to develop innovative NFV-based radio access network technologies. Additionally the company demonstrated its progress with China Mobile, Telefónica and Intel at Mobile World Congress in 2015 and announced the industry’s first live field trial of vRAN technology with China Mobile in July.

Advantech Launches Packetarium XLc Carrier Grade Blade Server

Advantech launched its Packetarium XLc carrier-grade blade server designed for mobile edge computing, where greater scalability and elasticity are needed to respond to fluctuations in subscriber demand and the introduction of additional new services.

Advantech said its Packetarium XLc is the first commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) telco-grade server of its class to extend Network Function Virtualization (NFV) beyond the core network to both edge and access equipment. The system scales compute performance over nine Intel Xeon processor blades. Higher processing densities and lower power footprints are achieved through dual Intel Xeon processor blades that provide up to 144 powerful Intel Xeon processor cores in a compact 6U platform with a reduced depth of 400mm. The system routes traffic through two redundant switches that connect to the dual-star backplane creating an internal network with no single point of failure. It integrates Advantech’s Advanced Platform Management and is designed to meet demanding industry standards requiring five 9’s availability and NEBS Level 3 compliance.

6WIND, which supplies high-performance networking software, is launchin its 6WIND Speed Certification Program, which is an ecosystem of software alternatives for high performance virtual networking.

The certification program unites application vendors, Service Providers and Integrators to enable virtual networking and performance for their Network Function Virtualization (NFV) solutions with 6WIND Virtual Accelerator.

Deployed transparently in the hypervisor domain, 6WIND Virtual Accelerator is a software package that accelerates virtual networking infrastructure while reducing CPU resources necessary for packet processing so that more cores are available for applications.

6WIND Announces Benchmark Results

6WIND announced benchmark results by SDxCentral, which investigated the performance of 6WIND’s Speed Series family on x86 commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) server platforms.

The Speed Series products include Turbo Appliances with 6WIND Turbo Router and 6WIND Turbo IPsec, which are software appliances deployed in bare metal environments and as virtual machines (VMs), and 6WIND Virtual Accelerator, which provides packet processing acceleration for virtual network infrastructures including Open vSwitch (OVS) and Linux bridging.

Highlights of the benchmarks include:

6WIND Turbo Router

Bare Metal:

  • 12×10 Gbps wire speed L3 forwarding performance is achieved in both packets per second with small packet sizes and gigabits 
  • More than 50 times Linux performance in the same conditions 

Virtual Machine:

  • More than 80 Gbps IMIX performance Linux remains below 10 Gbps

6WIND Turbo IPsec

Bare Metal:

  • 70 Gbps of IPsec data plane processing, which is the maximum capacity of the traffic generator and more than 5x Linux
  • 240,000 concurrent tunnels, which is 8x Linux

Virtual Machine:

  • More than 50 Gbps IMIX performance

6WIND Launches Remote NFV Portal with Advantech

Advantech and 6WIND announced the opening of 6WIND’s remote Network Function Virtualization (NFV) portal for telecom operators, integrators and Virtual Network Function (VNFs) partners worldwide.

The portal provides access to a broad range of highly scalable NFV platforms where the performance of 6WIND Virtual Accelerator and Turbo Appliances, plus third-party VNFs, can be rapidly evaluated, and where interoperability between VNFs can be successfully validated.

The initiative is also intended to encourage collaboration between VNF vendors, NFV middleware providers such as 6WIND, OpenStack vendors, and platform providers such as Advantech to stimulate further innovation, to speed wider adoption and faster deployment of NFV-related technologies.

Testing is currently underway with third-party VNF vendors on a variety of software appliances providing functions such as load balancing, security and policy enforcement that enable VNF as a Service (VNFaaS) solutions. In addition, 6WIND is now demonstrating the NFV portal test drive environment at its monthly DPDK Meetups, showing users how to run their own applications in the cloud leveraging OpenStack with increased performance from 6WIND Virtual Accelerator.

Cisco Invests in 6WIND for its SDN/NFV Software

Cisco has made an investment in 6WIND, a high-performance networking software company based in France.

The investment comes as part of Cisco's country digitization initiative announced in Paris last February to commit $100M to innovative French businesses. The announcement coincides with the visit between Cisco CEO John Chambers and CEO Designate Chuck Robbins, and French President Francois Hollande, in France this week.

6WIND's software enables the network architecture transition to SDN and NFV.  It delivers the performance, features and network hardware independence required for virtual networking on standard servers, without changing the existing software infrastructure.

6WIND Launches Turbo Router and Turbo IPsec Software Appliances

6WIND introduced Turbo Router and Turbo IPsec software appliances for standard x86 servers within bare metal and virtual machine (VM) environments. The company claims that its Turbo Router can deliver up to twice the performance at ¼ the price, compared to competing software routers. Compared to hardware-based IPsec Gateways, 6WIND’s Turbo IPsec can save 80% of the cost per gigabit of IPsec throughput.


The new Speed Series Turbo Appliances, which are based on the company's 6WINDGate packet processing software, are designed for service providers, cloud and content providers and enterprises. The new appliances are designed for linear performance scalability with the number of cores deployed and offer a full-featured data plane networking with fast path protocols.
