Equinix to Add Orange Business Services to its Cloud Exchage

Orange Business Services is joining Equinix Cloud Exchange, a new service that provides seamless, on-demand and direct access to multiple clouds and multiple networks inside Equinix International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers.  Equinix first announced its Cloud Exchange in in April 2014.

Specifically, Orange Business Services plans to offer its Business VPN Galerie cloud-ready network solution, to enterprises in selected International Business Exchanges (IBX®) data centers across North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific via the Exchange. Business VPN Galerie from Orange Business Services is a managed service that provides access to both Orange cloud capabilities and to partners’ cloud service platforms.  Initially, Orange Business Services will offer VPN Galerie service on the Equinix Cloud Exchange across three regions in the coming months.

Equinix Cloud Exchanges are currently offered in 13 markets globally – Silicon Valley, Washington D.C., New York, Toronto, Seattle, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago, London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Paris – with expansion planned to a total of 19 markets by the end of 2014.

Hitachi Scales its MME/SGSN with Juniper's Contrail

Hitachi Communication Technologies America has integrated its massively scalable, virtual MME/SGSN as a virtualized network function (VNF) with Juniper Networks' Contrail SDN/NFV controller.

Juniper said its Contrail orchestration simplifies Hitachi CTA's MME/SGSN rollouts by independently scaling based on operator deployment requirements:

  • subscriber sessions - enabling the millions of new LTE and mobile to mobile (M2M) devices; and
  • transactions processing - managing the dramatic increase in 4G device transactions rates; and
  • radio access point connectivity - exceeding the fan-out required by the increasing deployment of small cells.

Sprint Extends LTE Network with Rural Roaming Deals

Sprint announced roaming deals with 12 rural and regional network carriers that significantly extend the coverage of its LTE service.

Along with Sprint’s previously announced amended agreement with nTelos to extend their Strategic Network Alliance through 2022, the Rural Roaming Preferred Program - which was developed in conjunction with CCA - now extends coverage to 23 states, over 352,000 thousand square miles and a population of over 34 million people.

The new roaming partners are:

  • SouthernLINC Wireless, covering 127,000 square miles and 18 million people in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida
  • nTelos, covering 66,000 square miles and 6.1 million people in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Kentucky (previously announced)
  • C Spire Wireless, covering over 61,700 square miles and approximately 5.5 million people in Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and Tennessee
  • Nex-Tech Wireless, covering 35,000 square miles and 286,000 people in Kansas and Colorado
  • Flat Wireless, covering over 29,000 square miles and 2.1 million people in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona
  • SI Wireless dba MobileNation, covering 10,000 square miles and 830,000 people in Tennessee and Kentucky
  • Inland Cellular, covering 9,000 square miles and 297,000 people in Idaho and Washington

SanDisk to Acquire Fusion-io for Flash PCIe Arrays

SanDisk agreed to acquire Fusion-io (NYSE: FIO), a leading developer of flash-based PCIe hardware and software solutions, for approximately $1.1 billion, net of cash assumed.

Fusion-io, which is based in Salt Lake City, generated sales of $432 million in 2013 for its NAND Flash-based storage arrays for data centers.  The Fusion-io software creates a virtual storage layer that enables file systems, volume managers, and applications to access flash through a common block interface. The company was founded in 2005 and has about 875 employees.

SanDisk, which is based in Milpitas, California, has been a storage leader for over 25 years.

IBM Builds Two Softlayer Data Centers for U.S. Federal Workloads

IBM is ready to open the first of two new Softlayer Cloud Services data centers designed and dedicated for U.S. government workloads and compliant with Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) and Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) requirements.

IBM will open the first of the new data centers in Dallas, Texas, this month.  Later this year, it anticipates activating a companion center in Ashburn, Virginia.  Each of the high-security data centers will have initial capacity for 30,000 servers.  They will be connected by an isolated, robust private network with 2 Tbps of capacity.

IBM is also building a dedicated Security Operations Center for the new data centers to provide government clients with added security, availability and incident response capabilities.

“Government clients will find SoftLayer services delivered via these new centers give them the ideal platform for the mission critical workloads they are moving to the cloud, or new web-centric workloads,” said Anne Altman, General Manager, US Federal, IBM.  “We’ve designed these centers with government clients' needs in mind, investing in added security features and redundancies to provide a high level of availability.  With business partners enabled to deliver cloud solutions via the new SoftLayer centers for the Federal government, we are fostering an ecosystem of innovation."

IBM said the new data centers are part of the $1.2 billion commitment to it announced earlier this year to expand its global cloud operations in all major geographies and financial centers. By the end of 2014, IBM will operate 40 data centers across five continents, and will double SoftLayer cloud capacity. Fifteen new data centers will be added to the existing fleet of 25, in locations including China, Hong Kong, London, Japan, India, Canada, Mexico City and Dallas.

Microsoft to Invest $346.7 million in Virginia Data Center

Microsoft will invest $346.7 million to expand its data center site in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. Microsoft’s original project in 2010 at the site in the town of Boydton involved an investment of up to $499 million. In 2011, the company invested an additional $150 million to expand the site, and in 2013 announced a $348 million expansion.

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe welcomed the news, saying the expansion will create 90 new jobs in the area: “Microsoft’s data center campus in Mecklenburg County continues to represent transformational growth, opportunity, and investment for the region and for Virginia. The third expansion project brings the company’s total capital investment to more than $1.3 billion since 2010. Microsoft’s success and continued investment is a powerful testament to the benefits of doing business in Virginia and the thriving data center industry in the Commonwealth.”

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with Mecklenburg County to secure the project for Virginia. Dominion Virginia Power, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, and the Mid-Atlantic Broadband Communities Corporation also were instrumental in securing this project. Governor McAuliffe approved a $1.6 million grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to assist Mecklenburg County with the project. The Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission approved $1.6 million in Tobacco Region Opportunity Funds for the project.

BT Inks Long-term Power Purchase with UK Wind Farms

BT signed long-term Power Purchase Agreements worth £440 million with three wind farms in Scotland, Wales and Lancashire, adding more than 100 Megawatts (MW) of renewable energy to help power its UK operations.

The energy will be supplied from the 48-turbine Fallago Rig wind farm located 35km southeast of Edinburgh in the Scottish Borders, the new Heysham South Wind Farm in Lancashire and nine-turbine Mynydd Bwllfa Wind farm in South Wales. Key points:

  • BT will purchase 50 per cent of Fallago Rig’s output, enough to match the power consumption of its entire Scottish operations, in a deal worth around £300 million over the next two decades. 
  • Its 15-year, £100 million agreement with Mynydd Bwllfa will provide enough electricity to match around 50 per cent of BT’s demand in Wales. 
  • BT has also secured a 15-year deal to purchase electricity generated by the new Heysham South Wind Farm in Lancashire, worth around £40 million. 

BT said it consumed around 2 Terawatt hours (TWh) in 2013/14. It has reduced the energy needed to run its business for five consecutive years, saving more than £131 million in energy costs.

Huawei Delivers Cloud Data Centers for Phoenix TV Global Broadcasting

Phoenix TV, a leading broadcaster with operations around the world, has activated a distributed cloud data center platform supplied by Huawei.

The "2&7" initiative, covering Phoenix TV's main centers in Beijing and Hong Kong, as well as its offices in Shanghai, Taipei, London, Paris, Washington DC and Los Angeles, will enable the broadcaster to accelerate its content production worldwide away from tape-based production to online, real time availability and provide its viewers with an enhanced user experience. The initiative is the core of Phoenix TV's omnimedia strategy.

Phoenix TV has completed its data centers in Beijing, Hong Kong and London. By the end of 2014, Phoenix TV will have built and integrated its six remaining regional data centers. The new architecture provided by Huawei helps Phoenix TV to logically manage physically dispersed data center resources in a unified manner, enabling Phoenix TV to deliver news on key events from around the world in as little as five minutes.

In addition to the distributed cloud data centers, Huawei is also providing its cloud operating system, called FusionSphere, its USG9500 series firewall, its S9700 switch, OceanStor Enterprise Storage, and modular data center IDS2000.

Tesla Signs with DOCOMO for Telematics in Japan

Telsa Motors has selected NTT DOCOMO to provide M2M connectivity and mobile communications for the Tesla Model S in Japan.

The in-car telematics include navigation using high-resolution maps, online music such as on-demand Internet radio, and communications via the vehicle's 17-inch touchscreen. Tesla anticipates first deliveries of it its Model S in Japan this summer.

Tesla selected DOCOMO after favorably evaluating its mobile network infrastructure's stable, extra-wide availability, including in downtown areas with skyscrapers and in mountainous regions, and extensive support for corporate customers.

AT&T Wins Approvals for FTTH in North Carolina Cities

The city of Durham, North Carolina ratified an agreement with AT&T for its FTTH U-verse with GigaPower service capable of up to 1 gigabit per second. The agreement stemmed from a North Carolina Next Generation Network (NCNGN) initiative, which is comprised of six cities, four leading universities, and local business leaders working to encourage development of high-speed broadband networks in the state.

In addition, similar AT&T U-verse with GigaPower plans, related to the NCNGN initiative, are currently approved in Winston-Salem and pending ratification in four other North Carolina areas – Carrboro, Cary, Chapel Hill, and Raleigh.

Texas Instruments Launches New Power Line Platform

Texas Instruments (TI) announced a new power line communication (PLC) modem platform that supports the G3, PRIME and IEEE-1901.2 standards across both CENELEC and ARIB frequency bands.

The company said its new kit provides developers with a smaller low-cost design to evaluate any narrowband orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) PLC technology standard for use in a variety of industrial systems such as smart grid advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), solar energy installations, and building and factory automation systems.

Key features:

  • Incorporates all of the necessary PLC modem circuitry, along with a PLC docking station that includes the circuitry required to couple the modem to the AC mains.

ZTE Supplies 100G DWDM/OTN to Telkom Indonesia

Telkom Indonesia has selected ZTE to help upgrade its Java backbone network from 10G to 100G. Financial terms were not disclosed.

ZTE’s converged DWDM/OTN solutions are being deployed over the existing fiber network.  ZTE’s Guard Band solution enables the new network to coexist the legacy system.

Spanning the island of Java from West Java to East Java and connecting all major cities on the island, the Java backbone is the busiest backbone network in Indonesia, accounting for the largest total exchange capacity and the highest data growth rate.

ZTE has been a supplier for the the Java backbone transmission network since 2004.

HP Helion Network Promises a Commercial Model for Service Providers

At its HP Discover 2014 corporate event this week in Las Vegas, HP introduced its Helion Network, a global, open network that promises a portfolio of services for enterprise customers and the ability to create a secure hybrid IT environment.

The HP Helion Network will feature an OpenStack-based distributed cloud computing model. It will be hardware agnostic and HP promises that it will provide a unique commercial and operating model for service providers. HP hopes to attract a wide ecosystem of independent software vendors, developers, system integrators and value-added resellers.  It will also build on the HP CloudAgile Service Provider program, which has more than 115 service providers worldwide and 1,500 private cloud deployments. HP said its Helion Network will include companies such as AT&T, HKT, Intel and Synapsis.

HP expects to launch a pilot version of the Helion Network in Q4 2014.  General availability for HP Helion OpenStack and the HP Helion Development Platform is planned for the same time frame.

“Global enterprises grapple with a daunting array of cloud products and services across locations, which creates challenges that include security, data sovereignty, interoperability and quality of service,” said Martin Fink, executive vice president and chief technology officer, HP. “The HP Helion Network leverages HP’s expertise gained from running OpenStack technology at scale and our ability to unite service providers and technology partners. Sprint Chooses ItsOn's Virtualized OSS/BSS

ItsOn, a start-up based in Redwood City, California, announced that Sprint will use its Smart Services Platform to enhance mobile network capabilities and enable new types of mobile services.

Nimble Storage's News Flash Array Scales to 64 TB

Nimble Storage introduced its Adaptive Flash platform with the performance of flash-only arrays and the capacity of hybrid arrays. Adaptive Flash is based on CASL, Nimble’s patented Cache Accelerated Sequential Layout architecture, and InfoSight, the company’s automated cloud-based management and support system.

The new CS700 Series arrays and All-Flash Shelf boast up to 500,000 IOPS, 64 terabytes (TBs) of flash, and a petabyte of capacity.

Nimble said its Adaptive Flash platform dynamically and intelligently allocates storage resources to meet diverse and stringent application demands on a single platform.  The new All-Flash Shelf provides the flexibility to scale flash gradually up to 16 TBs per node, or 64 TBs in a 4-node scale-out cluster.

Qualcomm's Latest Small Cell Chipset Integrates LTE + Wi-Fi in 28nm

Qualcomm introduced its latest chipset for small cells aimed at neighborhood deployments or in small and medium businesses.

Qualcomm's new FSM90xx, which is implemented in 28nm technology, combines LTE functionality from the FSM99xx, which was announced last year and is commercially available now, with Wi-Fi.

To reduce interference and maintain high service quality for dense SMB and neighborhood small cell deployments, the FSM90xx integrates advanced self-organizing networks (SON) techniques through UltraSON software. The FSM90xx can be paired with Qualcomm Technologies’ RFICs (FTR8xxx) to support all LTE bands worldwide and maintains compatibility with the FSM99xx to further ease and speed OEM product development across both product lines.

Deutsche Telekom Publishes Legal Intercept Records

Deutsche Telekom published figures on the number of times in 2013 that it was legally obligated to provide information to the security authorities and to enable interception measures in Germany.

The record shows that a total of 49,796 lines were intercepted by German authorities on DT's network. In addition, requests were received for a total of 436,331 data traffic records, the number of requests for subscriber master data totaled 28,162, and requests were received in a total of 946,641 cases for data on IP address owners in connection with civil law proceedings on copyright violations.

NTT DATA and Chunghwa Telecom Lab Collaborate on SDN

NTT DATA and Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom Laboratories agreed to collaboration focused on carrier SDN technologies.

In this joint research, NTT DATA will refine the network control system for that purpose and conduct the implementation of the product as software. CHT-TL will mainly organize the requirements for what types of network services should be realized, as well as conduct the application development.

Radisys, AirHop and Broadcom Offer SON-Ready LTE Small Cell

Radisys, AirHop Communications, and Broadcom have collaborated on a small cell solution that combines AirHop’s eSON software with Radisys' Trillium LTE TOTALeNodeB solution and Broadcom's BCM617xx Series small cell silicon.  The integrated Self-Organizing Network (SON) solution for LTE and LTE-Advanced small cell networks is currently in trial deployments with leading mobile operators.
