Zayo highlights its latest network infrastructure expansions

Zayo highlightes a series of expansions to its independent fiber network infrastructure, including continued growth in its long-haul capacity with three new and overbuilt dark fiber routes, 18 new 400 Gbps enabled routes, and a newly completed Transpacific subsea route connecting the U.S. and Tokyo. This series of expansions from Zayo marks the latest in the company’s $250 million investment into its global infrastructure this year.

Zayo’s two new dark fiber routes include:

  • Cleveland to Columbus: This newly completed route is more direct than other available routes and provides new diversity from existing routes, giving Zayo customers an alternative routing option into Columbus, a growing data center and webscale market.
  • St. Louis to Indianapolis: This route provides the lowest latency and most direct path compared to other providers in the market, and gives Zayo customers an alternative route option to avoid Chicago when connecting East to West markets. The route is scheduled for completion by the end of 2022.

In addition to the new dark fiber routes, Zayo has overbuilt the following route with new fiber capacity:

  • Las Vegas to Phoenix: This low latency route will provide Zayo customers with ample fiber capacity, which is scarce along this route. In 2023, Zayo is set to enable this route with 400G capabilities using the overbuilt fiber.

New 400G routes include:

  • Atlanta to Orlando
  • Chicago to Columbus (Direct)
  • Cleveland to Ashburn
  • Columbus to Ashburn (Direct)
  • Dallas to Houston
  • Dallas to San Antonio
  • Denver to Dallas
  • Ft. Wayne to Chicago (via Indianapolis)
  • Houston to San Antonio
  • Los Angeles to Dallas
  • Omaha to Dallas
  • Orlando to Miami
  • Portland to Bay Area
  • Portland to Boardman
  • Seattle to Minneapolis (Canada Route)
  • Salt Lake City to Denver (I-80)
  • Tampa to Orlando
  • Tucson to Nogales

Zayo’s newest completed Transpacific subsea route connects Hillsboro, Oregon, to Tokyo utilizing the TGN-P cable marks the third Transpacific route for Zayo, in addition to its existing capabilities on PC-1 and Unity. The route provides a diverse option to PC-1 for a Transpacific cable landing in the U.S. Pacific Northwest and also includes a diverse landing station in Tokyo. The route is available with pre-provisioned and pre-tested 10G Waves circuits and is managed by Zayo’s network operation center (NOC) for enhanced customer service.

“Zayo is committed to supporting the needs of our customers, not only for today, but for the innovations of tomorrow,” said Bill Long, chief product officer at Zayo. “Zayo is one of the only national providers actively pursuing new fiber builds, which have been enabled through our extensive existing infrastructure footprint, expertise within our teams, and the agile business structure Zayo has worked to build over the last 15 years. The continued expansion of our dark fiber and wave routes provides our customers with the customization and scaling ability they need to accelerate their digital transformation journeys.”

Zayo launches API developer portal and rolls out MEF LSO Sonata

Zayo introduced its Application Programming Interface (API) Developer Portal to help enterprise customers to explore, on-board and test live environments with existing API offerings, and stay informed about upcoming developments.

Currently, Zayo receives hundreds of thousands API calls a month originating from 100+ customers. These requests come through key partners such as Connectbase, ACS Solutions, GeoTel, Upstack, NDA Corp, Masterstream and LMX as well as direct integrations. Benefits of Zayo’s existing API offerings include:

  • Network Discovery: Zayo’s Building Validation, Location, and Cloud Service Provider APIs enable customers to analyze how Zayo’s network availability powers their business footprint.
  • Quote and Order: Customers can grow their business capabilities by leveraging Zayo products in its Product Catalog API, generating quotes with the Quote API, and automating the ordering process through the Order API.
  • Service Management: Customers are able to retrieve critical service information, get support for issues, and keep track of planned outages with the Service Inventory, Ticketing, Ticket Catalog and Maintenance Cases APIs.

In addition to the API developer portal, Zayo has started the roll out of MEF API “Lifecycle Service Orchestration” (LSO) Sonata “Billie” release for quoting and ordering as well as performance monitoring. Further incorporation of MEF standards will enable Zayo to better serve its global carrier and enterprise customers to buy services in a standardized way and to automate MEF 3.0 Carrier Ethernet.

“We want to empower our customers through every step of their digital transformation journey, and APIs are where that journey comes to life in the form of automation at our customers' fingertips,” said Leidy Perez, vice president of product, strategic software at Zayo. “With our developer portal, customers now have a live environment where they can easily find the information they need to understand, design and build the best software integration strategy to make an impact and drive business results.”

“Too often, customers must work around their system of record to manage multiple vendors. The swivel-chair of that information back into each system of record causes massive inefficiencies that can impact service delivery time and revenue,” said Stan Hubbard, MEF Principal Analyst. “MEF LSO APIs offer an automated, standardized way for service providers to buy and sell services and maximize return on their investment in interface development. We are excited that MEF LSO Sonata APIs enable Zayo’s innovative API Developer Portal.”

Zayo activates 192-fiber subsea route between UK and Netherlands

Zayo activated its new Zeus subsea route connecting Lowestoft, UK and Zandvoort, Netherlands.

At 192 fibres, Zeus contains the highest fibre count connecting the UK and mainland Europe -- the most dense, deeply-buried and robust cable available in the North Sea. Zayo utilized Ultra Low Loss (ULL) optical fibres, so wavelength throughput on a single channel between London and Amsterdam can reach up to 600G. Zeus offers a full C-band capacity of 2.65 petabits per second (Pbps) and C+L Band of 5.2 Pbps. Corning supplied the SMF-28 fiber.

The cable is buried between 2 and 3 metres under the seabed in comparison with half a metre for existing, outdated cables. The cable is guaranteed to be 100% dual-armored – all the way through the joints – to prevent interference. To ensure an optimal customer experience, Zayo continuously monitors Zeus via OTDR devices for rapid fault identification. In addition, Zayo will be leveraging a 24 X 7 guard vessel to monitor any activity along the path.

“Meeting the connectivity needs of tomorrow requires deploying the most advanced network today, and that’s exactly what we’ve built for customers who want a hyper-fast and ultra-reliable connection between the UK and mainland Europe,” said Jesper Aagaard, president of Zayo Europe. “Zeus is now the strongest connection available in the region. We utilized the best cable available, buried it deeper in the seabed than our competitors and made it even more reliable than alternatives. We are confident our customers will benefit from this project for years- and even decades- to come.”

“The North Sea is an extremely challenging body of water for a subsea project like Zeus. Not only are there harsh weather conditions and relentless currents, the seabed is littered with items, some as simple as a discarded aluminum can and some as formidable as unexploded bombs left over from the Second World War,” said Geir Holmer, CEO of JTD Associates and a key consultant on the project. “Not only did we overcome these challenges, we worked tirelessly with Zayo to ensure this route was built to last – making it the most resilient route across the North Sea. I’m proud to have been part of this project, and what it will enable.”

As part of the project, the team worked with the Royal Netherlands Navy to detonate a large, 80- year-old explosive that had been left on the seabed since World War II. The team also put sustainability first, working to limit disruption and preserve the ecology of the sea.

Equinix tests 400G to link Paris-London data centers over Zayo

Equinix is testing a 400G connection between its data centers in London (Slough) and Paris on Zayo’s subsea fiber network.

As part of the trial, Zayo deployed a 500G optical channel on its 800G-enabled, DWDM network. The company used the additional bandwidth to deploy an extra 100G wave for enhanced monitoring capabilities, creating increased visibility to ensure the consistent viability of the network. The connection was able to withstand full-load testing without any traffic loss.

Zayo said the 400G technology produced many benefits by reducing hardware from four separate 100G optical cards to just one 400G card. This resulted in a simple application with fewer handoffs between the customer and Zayo, reducing the potential points of failure. Equinix streamlined operations by having fewer circuits to manage and operate its network while reducing costs. These achievements mark key differentiators for customers who build their networks around high bandwidth capacity.

As part of the trial, Zayo also reduced power consumption per gigabit by 40% compared to prior generation hardware. In addition to reducing energy costs for customers, the achievement aligns with commitments by both Zayo and Equinix to sustainable business practices and efforts to reduce environmental impacts. Zayo has also achieved efficiencies in hardware and equipment usage.

Zayo also confirmed that it is working to deliver 400G wavelength services across the majority of its U.S. and European routes by the end of 2022.

“As the first global data center platform to trial 400G, we see tremendous potential in how it will help power our next generation of services,” said Muhammad Durrani, Senior Director, Global Network Architecture, Equinix. “Our success in this trial is about more than faster speeds; it’s about the outcomes it will enable for our customers, such as achieving the low-latency requirements of critical devices transforming everything from transportation to healthcare.”

“At Zayo, not only are we focused on our customers’ connectivity needs today, we are preparing for their speed, latency, and capacity needs of tomorrow while simultaneously driving efficiencies and simplifying the overall network design,” said Yannick Leboyer, Zayo’s COO, Europe. “Equinix is sitting at the epicenter of several trends that are reshaping the industry – from digital transformation and big data to IoT and AI. Together, we’re future-proofing the ecosystem to help companies grow and innovate.”

The deal will make DataBank one of the largest privately-held data center operators in the U.S. and a leading provider of edge colocation and connectivity solutions to hyperscale, technology, and content customers across the U.S. Zayo Group will become a significant customer and continue to be an anchor tenant within the zColo facilities. Following completion of the deal, DataBank's assets will include:

  • 64 data centers in 29 markets (up from 20 data centers and 9 markets)
  • Over 3,000 customers including many Fortune 100 and leading cloud and content providers
  • Pro forma annual revenue of over $450M
  • 1.1M raised square feet of data center space
  • 141 MW of installed UPS capacity
  • Over 30,000 network cross connects
  • 18 major network interconnection points
  • 12 cloud nodes

DataBank said the acquisition also significantly accelerates its edge and hybrid cloud strategies. The expanded data center footprint provides DataBank’s customers with new geographic options for colocating their mission-critical content, data, and workloads closer to end-user populations in key markets like Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, Miami, Boston, and New York City. With double the number of private cloud nodes and public-cloud on-ramps, DataBank customers will have more flexibility to design hybrid IT solutions that adapt as their infrastructure needs evolve.
