Nokia supplies private wireless network for Chilean port terminal

Nokia will deploy the first industrial-grade LTE private network in a port terminal in Chile at San Antonio Terminal Internacional S.A. (STI), a facility spanning 31 hectares and supported by hundreds of workers, sensors, equipment and vehicles. 

The new private wireless network will be based on the Nokia Digital Automation Cloud (DAC) platform and will use 4.9G LTE. As the single supplier for this project, Nokia will also provide the RAN network, training, implementation services and remote support.

San Antonio Terminal Internacional S.A. (STI) is the main port terminal in Chile and one of the most important port terminals in South America. It is also the closest port to all the main cities in Chile, only 110 km. from Santiago through highway 78; and also connected to many key production centers in Southern Chile.

Phoenix Tower to acquire 3,800 towers from WOM Chile

Phoenix Tower International has agreed to acquire up to 3,800 telecommunications sites in Chile from WOM SpA. The deal includes approximately 2,334 tower sites at the initial closing and 1,466 additional sites by 2024 for a total consideration of approximately $930 million, a portion of which will be paid upon transfer of the additional sites.

After accounting for this transaction, PTI will become the largest communications tower owner in Chile, expanding its global presence to over 22,000 towers in 19 countries.

We have strong relationships with all four Mobile Network Operators in the country, each of which will be deploying 5G networks in the near term. Altice to sell its towers in the Dominican Republic 

Altice Europe will sell off its communications tower business in the Dominican Republic to Phoenix Tower International, a portfolio company of Blackstone, for US$170 million. The deal covers 1,049 sites currently operated by Altice Dominicana. In addition, Altice Dominicana will enter into a 20-year master agreement to lease back the facilities. Bouygues and Phoenix to operate 4,000 mobile towers in France

Blackstone-backed Phoenix Tower International and Bouygues Telecom will form a joint venture to develop approximately 4,000 newly constructed wireless towers over 12 years across France outside the Very Dense Area. The companies said some of the sites will be deployed as part of Bouygues Telecom’s “New Deal Mobile” regulatory obligations of targeted mobile radio coverage improvements, accelerated mobile radio rollouts alongside transportation routes....

Equinix completes acquisition of Data Centers from Entel Chile

Equinix completed its previously announced acquisition of four data centers in Chile from Empresa Nacional De Telecomunicaciones S.A. (Entel) in Chile. 

Equinix also announced it has signed an agreement to acquire one additional data center in Peru, also from Entel, subject to the satisfaction of closing conditions. The enterprise value for the five data centers is approximately US$735 million at current exchange rates in effect on the dates of signing.

The four data centers in the Santiago metro include:

  • The Ciudad de los Valles location, which features two data centers with approximately 170,000 gross square feet combined, and is the largest multitenant data center site in Santiago, with ample expansion opportunities.
  • The downtown Santiago site, which features approximately 46,000 gross square feet. It is a network-dense facility adjacent to the Entel Tower, a key internet exchange facility in the market that is close to the city government center.
  • The approximately 31,000 gross square foot facility in Longovilo, which is strategically located away from the city center to meet the backup and disaster recovery needs of customers, including financial institutions.

The data center in Peru is approximately 16,000 gross square feet and is a well-established site located in Lima.

Approximately 100 Entel employees and contractors are expected to become Equinix employees or contractors under the terms of the agreement.

Equinix acquires 4 data centers from Chile's Entel

Equinix agreed to acquire four data centers from Chile's  Empresa Nacional De Telecomunicaciones (Entel) for an enterprise value of approximately US$705 million. The deal includes three data centers in Santiago, Chile and one in Lima, Peru.

Some highlights: 

  • The four facilities generate approximately US$53 million of annualized revenue and represent a purchase multiple of approximately 23x EV / 2021 adjusted EBITDA including Equinix SG&A expenses. The acquisition is expected to be AFFO per share accretive upon close, excluding integration costs. 
  • Approximately 120 Entel employees and contractors are expected to become Equinix employees or contractors under the terms of the agreement.
  • The more than 100 Entel customers currently operating in the four data centers will become Equinix customers, with more than 75 of these representing net-new customers.
  • The three data centers in Chile are located in the metropolitan area of Santiago and have different strategic characteristics. The Ciudad de los Valles location is the largest multitenant data center in Santiago, with ample expansion opportunities. The downtown Santiago site is a network-dense facility, adjacent to the Entel Tower, a key IX facility in the market, and close to the city government center, within a heightened security environment. The facility in Longovilo is strategically located away from the city center to meet the backup and disaster recovery needs from financial institutions.
  • The Peruvian data center is a well-established Tier III site located in Lima, the capital of Peru.

Chile looks to build first fiber cable to Antarctica

The government of Chile has commenced a study on the feasability of a subsea fiber cable between Puerto Williams, Chile and King George Island off the coast of Antarctica.

King George Island is a base for scientific research from several countries, including Chile, Argentina, Brazil, China, South Korea, Russia, and the United States.

The cable would have a length of approximately 1,000 kilometers.

Subsea cable planned for Chile-NZ-Australia route

Chile's Ministry of Transport & Telecommunications selected a subsea cable route across the South Pacific directly linking to New Zealand and Australia. The proposed 13,180-km route, which was supported by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation and the Japan ICT Fund, would offer onward connections to Japan via existing subsea cables. Huawei Marine to build subsea cable in southern Chile

Chile's Comunicación y Telefonía Rural S.A. (CTR) has retained Huawei Marine to deploy the Fiber Optic Austral (FOA) subsea cable system.

FOA, which will be the southernmost submarine cable in the world, will connect three regions in southern Chile.


Huawei Marine will provide an end-to-end submarine cable solution using its 100G universal platform to provide a seamless optical network architecture between submarine and terrestrial networks. The system has a design capacity of 16 Tbps and a length of 2,800 kilometers. It is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.

Telxius activates Mistral along Latin America's Pacific coast


Telxius' new Mistral submarine cable, which runs along the Latin American Pacific coast, is now ready for service between Puerto San Jose (Guatemala) with Valparaiso (Chile) with additional landing points in Salinas (Ecuador), Lurin (Peru) and Arica (Chile).

Mistral spans approximately 7,300 km, and features six fibre pairs, 132 Tbps of potential capacity, and the lowest latency from Guatemala to Chile. It is the first subsea cable in the last 20 years to connect Guatemala, Ecuador, Peru and Chile.

The Mistral cable was named after the Latin American poet Lucila Godoy Alcayaga, otherwise known as Gabriela Mistral, who was the first Latin American woman to receive a Nobel prize. In addition to her celebrated contributions to the writing world, Mistral was an inspirational educator across Latin America, the United States and Europe, representing Latin America in the Institute for Intellectual Cooperation of the League of Nations, and attending conferences of women and educators globally.

Telxius activates Brazil - Argentina subsea cable

Telxius announced that the new Tannat submarine cable, connecting Santos (Brazil) with Las Toninas (Argentina), is now open for service. 

Tannat is a 2,000 kilometer new generation system adds to the Brusa and Junior cables on the Atlantic coast of Latin America to deliver the most modern and diverse end-to-end connectivity between the U.S., Brazil and Argentina. 

The new cable completes a main connectivity route between the U.S. and key hubs in South America as a continuation of Brusa (Virginia Beach – Rio de Janeiro) and Junior (Rio de Janeiro – Santos). Brusa has a capacity of 160 Tbps, with the highest capacity direct connection between the U.S. and South America and one of the highest in the world. Brusa connects Rio de Janeiro and Fortaleza in Brazil, San Juan in Puerto Rico and Virginia Beach, U.S. via an 11,000 km, ultra-low-latency submarine cable. SAm-1, the 25,000 km subsea cable ring that surrounds Latin America, provides additional route diversity. With the combination of these four cables, Telxius offers outstanding diverse and robust subsea network routes in Latin America.

Telefónica acquires 20% stake in Nabiax in exchange for 4 data centers

Telefónica will acquire a 20% in Nabiax, a colocation and hosting partner owned y Asterion Industrial Partners, in exchange for four data centers (two in Spain and two in Chile). Asterion and its coinvestors, who retain the remaining 80% of the share capital in Nabiax.

Nabiax operates eleven data centers that it acquired from Telefónica in 2019.

The transaction includes an agreement for housing services in the four DC’s under equivalent terms and conditions as those established in the prior transaction (initial term of ten years). The transaction does not include the sale of servers owned by Telefónica, nor the management and access to customers hosted on them. Telefónica will therefore continue to provide and manage the services that it has been offering to its customers from these DCs and will maintain the direct relationship with such customers.


Movistar Chile picks Nokia for 5G launch

Movistar Chile, a division of Telefónica, is using Nokia's AirScale portfolio for its 5G launch. In addition, Nokia will upgrade Movistar’s 4G and 4G+ networks to strengthen the critical network backbone across Chile’s key markets.

The upgraded network, which will operate across Movistar’s recently won spectrum in Chile’s 5G auction in the 3.5GHz band, will leverage Nokia’s AirScale Radio Access portfolio to deliver ultra-low latency, huge connectivity and extreme capacity, offering both consumers and small to medium-sized business a path to 5G in Chile for the first time. Nokia’s AirScale portfolio can be seamlessly upgraded from 4G/LTE to 5G/NR via a software-based upgrade to enable a smooth evolution towards 5G deployments.


Nokia notes that Chile is the first country in Latin America to have a 5G auction.   Movistar Chile acquired 50 MHz in the 3.5Ghz band, which will support enhanced mobile broadband services in Chile. 5G is an evolution in mobile networks. Telefónica Hispanoamérica is evaluating the right circumstances for deployment in each market, taking steps towards the evolution of the network in several countries.

PacketLight supplies data center interconnect in Santiago

 PIT Chile, a major Internet Exchange Point (IXP) for major CDNs including Facebook, Fastly, Google, and Microsoft, and local Chilean ISPs businesses, has deployed PacketLight's PL-2000T transponder to connect two of its data centers in Santiago, Chile.

The solution supports a 200G protected DCI link between two data centers in El Bosque and Santa Marta on three nodes of dark fiber. 

PacketLight's PL-2000T enables the high capacity transport of up to 8 x 100Gbs Ethernet with integrated EDFA and optical switch, as well as optional embedded physical layer encryption to support future requirements.

Subsea cable planned for Chile-NZ-Australia route

Chile's Ministry of Transport & Telecommunications selected a subsea cable route across the South Pacific directly linking to New Zealand and Australia.

The proposed 13,180-km route, which was supported by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation and the Japan ICT Fund, would offer onward connections to Japan via existing subsea cables. It would also support the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) initiative.

A rival trans-Pacific cable proposal backed by Huawei and the government of China did not gain the support of the Chilean government.

Sparkle adds fiber pair on Google’s Curie US-Chile cable

TI Sparkle will gain access to a fiber pair on Google's new Curie submarine cable system connecting Los Angeles to Valparaiso, Chile.

Google's 10,500-km "Curie" subsea cable stretching from California to Chile is now ready for service. The new cable is equipped four 18 Tbps fiber optic pairs, a design capacity of 72 Tbps.

Google commissions own subsea cable from CA to Chile

TE Subcom has been awarded a contract by Alphabet, the parent company of Google, to build a subsea cable from California to Chile. A ready-for-service date is expected in 2019.

The Curie Submarine Cable will be a four fiber-pair subsea system spanning over 10,000 km from Los Angeles to Valparaiso. It will include a branching unit for future connectivity to Panama.

The project is believed to be the first subsea cable to land in Chile in 20 years.

Chile's Gtd deploys Infinera

Gtd, a Chilean multi-service telecommunications provider, has deployed Infinera’s 7300 Multi-haul Transport Platform, mTera Universal Transport Platform, and Transcend software-defined networking (SDN) solutions to increase capacity across its terrestrial network in Chile and its subsea networks.

Gtd said its new "Prat" subsea optical fiber cable will allow the creation of a digital connectivity ring that will prepare Chile for the arrival of technological investments and position the country as a gateway to other countries in South America.

ADVA supplies its Oscilloquartz synchronization to Chilean service provider

One of Chile’s largest communication service providers (CSPs) is using ADVA's Oscilloquartz synchronization technology to roll out LTE Advanced (LTE-A) connectivity across the country and prepare for 5G.

ADVA's OSA 5430 Series and OSA 5410 Series of PTP grandmaster clocks and GNSS receivers deliver stringent phase synchronization in the core and in the access network, enabling the company to address rapidly rising customer demand for premium services such as high-definition video streaming. The network is being installed by ADVA’s long-term partner Sistemas de Instrumentación Ltda.

Chile studies subsea cable to Asia

Chile's telecommunications regulator his continuing to study the feasibility of direct subsea cable system from South America to Asia. Current connections are routed either via the United States or Europe. Chile's President, Sebastián Piñera, has expressed his support for the study.

The government has now awarded a contract valued at US$2.9 million to Telecommunications Management Group Inc. and WFN Strategies LLC to provide an assessment of the economic, technical and legal issues concerning the project.

América Móvil and Telxius to build 108 Tbps Pacific cable

América Móvil and Telxius are planning a new undersea cable along the Pacific coast of Latin America.

The 7,300 km cable will have an initial estimated capacity of 108 Tbps. It will connect Puerto San José (Guatemala) with Valparaíso (Chile), with additional landing points in Salinas (Ecuador), Lurín (Peru) and Arica (Chile).

Google's Curie subsea cable lands in Valparaiso, Chile

Google's subsea cable along the west coast of the Americas made landfall in Valparaiso, Chile.

The Curie Submarine Cable will be a four fiber-pair subsea system spanning over 10,000 km from Los Angeles to Valparaiso. It will include a branching unit for future connectivity to Panama. Subcom is the lead contractor.

The project is believed to be the first subsea cable to land in Chile in 20 years.
Chris Carobene, vice president of marine services and network construction at SubCom said, “Google and SubCom’s consistent teamwork allowed for mitigation of potential risks to the Curie cable system project schedule, enabling early completion of the Valparaiso landing. We look forward to continued collaboration on future projects.”


Curie is the 13th subsea cable project that Google has funded or contributed to.

Google has selected an Equinix data center in El Segundo, California as the cable landing station (CLS) for the new Curie subsea cable system.  In the U.S., the cable will land directly at the Equinix LA4 International Business Exchange (IBX) data center.

The Curie cable is expected to go live in 2019.

Equinix said the CLS configuration is ideal for extending the backhaul capacity of a subsea cable system directly to the ecosystems of companies in its high-density IBX data centers. The architecture provides easy access to a dense, rich ecosystem of networks, clouds and IT service providers.

Equinix has been selected as an interconnection partner in more than 25 of the current subsea cable projects.

Google's Curie subsea cable lands in Valparaiso, Chile

Google's subsea cable along the west coast of the Americas made landfall in Valparaiso, Chile.

The Curie Submarine Cable will be a four fiber-pair subsea system spanning over 10,000 km from Los Angeles to Valparaiso. It will include a branching unit for future connectivity to Panama. Subcom is the lead contractor.

The project is believed to be the first subsea cable to land in Chile in 20 years.
Chris Carobene, vice president of marine services and network construction at SubCom said, “Google and SubCom’s consistent teamwork allowed for mitigation of potential risks to the Curie cable system project schedule, enabling early completion of the Valparaiso landing. We look forward to continued collaboration on future projects.”


Curie is the 13th subsea cable project that Google has funded or contributed to.

Google picks Equinix for Curie Subsea Cable Landing Station

Google has selected an Equinix data center in El Segundo, California as the cable landing station (CLS) for the new Curie subsea cable system.  In the U.S., the cable will land directly at the Equinix LA4 International Business Exchange (IBX) data center.

Google commissions own subsea cable from CA to Chile

TE Subcom has been awarded a contract by Alphabet, the parent company of Google, to build a subsea cable from California to Chile. A ready-for-service date is expected in 2019.

The Curie Submarine Cable will be a four fiber-pair subsea system spanning over 10,000 km from Los Angeles to Valparaiso. It will include a branching unit for future connectivity to Panama.

The project is believed to be the first subsea cable to land in Chile in 20 years.
