ONF Launches OpenFlow v1.3 Pilot Testing Program

The Open Networking Foundation (ONF) has launched a pilot OpenFlow v1.3 Conformance Testing Program. ONF members currently participating in the program include companies such as: Digital China Networks (DCN), Centec Networks, Extreme Networks, H3C Technologies, HP, Huawei, Meru Networks, NEC, and ZTE Corporation.

“The interest we’ve received from member companies and the momentum we’ve experienced in conformance testing underscore industry demand for conformant SDN solutions and overall interoperability,” said Dan Pitt, executive director of the Open Networking Foundation. “OpenFlow v1.3 builds on the existing testing specification incorporating a more robust feature set and demonstrates our commitment to making OpenFlow v1.3 a stable target for implementers. By supporting OpenFlow v1.3, vendors looking to expand their product lines are able to show customers their long-term commitment to the protocol and the future of networking.”

Since the OpenFlow Conformance Testing Program’s inception in 2013, ONF has certified six products from four member companies for their solutions: DCN, HP, Meru Networks, and NEC. An ONF Certificate of Conformance is the highest level of assurance available in the market today and validates conformance to a particular version of the OpenFlow specification. Vendors can earn an ONF Certificate of Conformance for networking hardware, including switches and routers, as well as network software.

“The companies that have already completed conformance testing have rapidly seen the benefits of the program, including an increase in quality and accelerated product deployment,” said Erica Johnson, director of the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Lab (UNH-IOL) and chair of the Open Networking Foundation’s Testing Leadership Council. “By undergoing testing, vendors are able to solidify their commitment to the OpenFlow specification while also building network operators’ confidence in the products they deploy in their networks.”

The ONF OpenFlow Conformance Testing Program has six accredited international testing laboratories, namely Beijing Internet Institute (BII) in Beijing; China Telecommunication Technology Labs (CTTL) in Beijing; Criterion Network Labs (CNLabs) in Bangalore; Indiana Center for Network Translational Research and Education (InCNTRE) at Indiana University; Network Benchmarking Lab (NBL) of National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) in Hsinchu, Taiwan; and University of New Hampshire InterOperability Lab (UNH-IOL) at the University of New Hampshire.

Coriant Intros Transcend SDN Orchestrator based on OpenDaylight

Coriant launched its Transcend SDN software suite, providing an advanced programming environment and open interfaces that empower on-demand, application-centric service agility and monetization of network assets.

The solution combines many of Coriant’s SDN and NSV solutions: Coriant Transcend Orchestrator based on the OpenDaylight Project, the Coriant Transcend Transport Controller, the Coriant Transcend Application Suite, and integration of Open Virtual Switch (OVS) functionality for Network Function Virtualization (NFV).

The Coriant Transcend SDN Solution is comprised of two major components:

Amdocs Rolls Out Network Cloud Service Orchestrator

Amdocs introduced its Network Cloud Service Orchestrator, an open, vendor-agnostic, catalog-driven solution for defining and activating complex services containing virtual network functions (VNFs) from multiple vendors.  The idea is to converge service fulfillment and assurance into a holistic, real-time process.  Amdocs said its solution enables the continuous design, fulfillment and assurance of network services, from any VNF vendor, utilizing existing service catalog and ordering systems, over all mainstream cloud management systems and SDN Controllers in a hybrid  physical and virtual environment.

SK Telecom Hits 300 Mbps with LTE-A Tri-Band Carrier Aggregation

SK Telecom demonstrated live LTE-Advanced Tri-Band Carrier aggregation in its commercial network, achieving downlink speeds of up to 300 Mbps. The demonstration, which was conducted in partnership with Ericsson, combined three separate bands of 10 MHz, 10 MHz and 20 MHz bandwidth.

  • Earlier this year, SK Telecom has successfully tested LTE-Advanced 3 Band Carrier Aggregation (CA) technology in its labs. The technology aggregates 3 bands – 20MHz+10MHz +10MHz – to support speeds of up to 300Mbps. Client devices will need chipsets capable of aggregating 3 bands. SK Telecom said its testing help advance the global standardization process for LTE-Advanced 3 band CA.

Ericsson Acquires Sentilla for Workload Mgt Software

Ericsson announced the acquisition of Sentilla, a start-up based in Redwood City, California, that develops IT infrastructure intelligence software. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Sentilla develops software for optimal performance, real-time workload management and intelligent deployment decision-making in complex multi-technology environments.

Ericsson said the acquisition enhances its ability to help service providers support IT organizations that are struggling to overcome new network complexities introduced by mobility and the cloud. In particular, Sentilla's capabilities across data gathering, performance monitoring, policy engine and reporting complement Ericsson Cloud Manager and Ericsson Expert Analytics, providing key functionality that supports advanced data center and cloud management solutions.

Equinix's Planned REIT Convervsion Yields $7.57 Dividend

In conjunction with its previously announced conversion to a real estate investment trust (REIT), Equinix announced a special distribution of $416.0 million, or approximately $7.57 per share based on the number of shares currently outstanding, to its common stockholders.

"Today's announcement marks an important step on our path to becoming a REIT. The declaration of the special distribution aligns with our expectations that we will begin operating as a REIT on January 1, 2015," said Steve Smith, president and CEO of Equinix. "We have finished a major milestone with the completion of the financial system conversion in Q3, and we are in active dialogue with the IRS about our pending Private Letter Ruling request. We are pleased with the current momentum, and we expect to receive a favorable PLR in 2014."  

For Equinix to be eligible to qualify for taxation as a REIT for federal income tax purposes effective for its taxable year commencing January 1, 2015, Equinix must distribute, on or before December 31, 2015, its previously undistributed accumulated earnings and profits attributable to all taxable periods ending prior to January 1, 2015 (the "Pre-2015 Accumulated E&P"). Equinix expects that the value of the 2014 Special Distribution, plus the expected value of the deemed distribution on account of the adjustment to the conversion rate relating to Equinix's outstanding 4.75% Convertible Subordinated Notes due June 15, 2016 (the "2016 Convertible Notes") that will be made as a result of the 2014 Special Distribution (the "2014 Conversion Rate Adjustment"), will exceed Equinix's Pre-2015 Accumulated E&P.

Intel Intros Data Protection Tech for Point-of-Sale Terminals

Intel introduced an end-to-end encryption technologyt that can be built into point of sale (POS) platforms powered by Intel silicon, including Intel Core and select Intel Atom processors.  The Intel Data Protection Technology for Transactions, which was developed in collaboration with NCR, adds an extra layer of software to protect the payment process, complementing current retail investments in EMV (Europay, MasterCard and Visa) credit card authorization, tokenization and other data protection technologies.

The software resides and runs on the Intel chipset for enhanced security and helps close the gaps between data transmitted between POS devices and the data center. The client software is available now. The full solution based on Intel Data Protection Technology for Transactions will be available to retailers in the first half of next year.

Qualcomm agreed to acquire CSR plc, a developer of connectivity, audio, imaging and location chips, for at approximately £1.6 billion (about $2.5 billion).

CSR's areas of expertise include silicon chips for voice & Music; Bluetooth Smart; Automotive Infotainment; Indoor Location\.

Xilinx Posts Flat Quarterly Sales but Profitability Exceeds Guidance

Xilinx posted second quarter fiscal 2015 sales of $604 million, down 1% from the prior quarter and up 1% from the same quarter of the prior fiscal year.  Second quarter fiscal 2015 net income was $172 million or $0.62 per diluted share.

"September quarter sales were in line with our guidance, but our profitability surpassed our expectations.  Operating margin was 33% in the September quarter, up from 27% in the same quarter a year ago," said Moshe Gavrielov, Xilinx President and Chief Executive Officer.  "For the December quarter, we are forecasting a strong recovery in 28nm sales driven by a broad base of applications.  We continue to target approximately $600 million in 28nm sales for fiscal year 2015, up nearly 60% from the prior fiscal year."

NTT Docomo Cites Progress in Multivendor NFV Trials

NTT DOCOMO has now tested NFV implementations from six leading vendors: Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Ericsson, Huawei, NEC, and Nokia Networks.

The carrier said its PoC trials focused on LTE virtualized Evolved Packet Core (EPC).  Its testing successfully verified the interoperability of each vendor's EPC software with a different vendor's equipment, such as scalable data processing capability for congested data traffic and immediate network recovery in the event of hardware failure. This opens the door for communication software designed originally for dedicated hardware to run on multipurpose hardware. In the future, such technologies will allow mobile operators to combine network hardware and software components of any vendor for deployment of network systems.

"Thanks to collaborative efforts in the mobile network industry, NFV is soundly moving toward practical realization, rather than just ending up as a pie-in-the-sky dream," said Seizo Onoe, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at NTT DOCOMO. Huawei Develops its OpenStack-based FusionSphere Cloud Operating System

Huawei cited progress in developing its FusionSphere platform for NFV and SDN based on OpenStack.

Huawei is creating a distributed cloud data center solution (SD-DC2) based on FusionSphere.  The idea is to enable centralized resources scheduling and unified cloud services provisioning by integrating multiple data centers of various vendors' and service providers' into a single resource pool through the standard Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). This would create large-scale resource pools, flexible management, and openness.

Huawei also confirmed that its FusionSphere will be capable of supporting third-party devices and products across hardware and applications.

Huawei will work with major carriers, telecom vendors, IT vendors, and Over the Top (OTT) companies to encourage NFV innovation and best practice identification.

In a keynote address at the Layer123 SDN & OpenFlow World Congress in Düsseldorf, Germany, Justin Dustzadeh, Huawei's CTO & VP Technology Strategy, said SDN requires a new way of thinking from carriers as well as from the network vendors and that Huawei is striving to implement openness across all its platforms. He noted that that do date Huawei has carried out more than 60 joint NFV and Software Defined Network (SDN) innovation projects with over 20 telecom carriers, including Telefonica, Vodafone and China Telecom. Huawei also accomplished several successful commercial deployments in 2014, including the SDN-based Wo cloud project in cooperation with China Unicom, and a NFV-based vIMS joint project with a leading European operator.

This week Huawei is hosting a Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) Open Cloud Forum at its European Innovation and Experience Center in Düsseldorf.

Juniper and Akamai Demo Elastic CDN based on NFV

At the SDN & OpenFlow World Congress  in Dusseldorf, Juniper Networks and Akamai Technologies are showing an Elastic Content Delivery Network (CDN) that could prove to be a more flexible solution for scaling video delivery.

The proof-of-concept demonstration uses Akamai’s virtualized Aura Licensed CDN (LCDN) software and Juniper's Contrail Controller for SDN and network function virtualization (NFV) to dynamically scale up and down network resources to support content spikes resulting from the broadcast of large events. The technology is also designed to accelerate service creation for service providers utilizing CDNs to launch innovative multiscreen video services that help drive subscriber acquisition and loyalty.

“Content delivery networks are evolving to meet the needs of increasingly real-time, distributed applications and users. Overlay networks have proven to simplify and automate the delivery of application and user-centric services without the administrative overhead of traditional infrastructure approaches. By combining Akamai’s virtualized caching components with Contrail’s scale-out network service automation, the companies have created a truly elastic CDN solution to meet the emerging needs of telco clouds,” stated Jennifer Lin, senior director product management, Juniper Networks.

Procera's NFV Software Solution Hits 40 Gbps on COTS

Procera Networks' PacketLogic/V Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) software solution has been benchmarked by the European Advanced Network Test Center (EANTC) at 40Gbps with fully active Internet Intelligence functionality, running on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment.

Specifically, the EANTC testing measured the performance of the PacketLogic/V solutions running on a dual socket Intel Xeon E5-2699v3 CPUs clocked at 2.30 Ghz and 18 cores with 64 Gigabytes of memory (RAM). The software environment for the test was Debian 7.6 and Qemu 1.6.2, as well as version 15.0.4.5 of PacketLogic software. The tests measured the performance and latency of PacketLogic/V running in a NFV configuration with full Internet Intelligence capabilities being exercised. In the tests where PacketLogic/V was achieving 40Gbps of performance, the CPU usage never exceeded 45%, demonstrating that the performance could go higher if the platform supported more interfaces.

“A lack of proven NFV performance capabilities in the industry has been blocking many NFV deployment scenarios by operators over the past year,” said Peter Alm, chief product architect at Procera. “Achieving the same performance with COTS NFV as we do on our PacketLogic™ hardware platforms is a significant technical accomplishment that delivers economic and technological value to network operators.”

Brocade Expands Alliance with VMware

Brocade announced an alliance with VMware to advance solutions that support the New IP by allowing enterprises to more easily transition to software-defined data centers (SDDCs) and adopt network virtualization. Specifically, Brocade Ethernet and Fibre Channel fabrics will be interoperable with VMware vRealize Operations 6.0 (formerly the VMware vCenter Operations Management Suite). The collaboration will enable better analytics capabilities for both Fibre Channel SAN and IP networks. Previous work on Fibre Channel integration into VMware vRealize Operations is now being leveraged by next-generation data centers.

Dell'Oro: SDN Market Starts to Take Off in 2014

The SDN market arket is forecast to grow more than 65% in 2014, versus 2013, according to a new report from Dell'Oro Group. The majority of sales will be for network security appliances and Ethernet switches as SDN starts to gain a foothold outside of the major cloud providers.

"The Ethernet Switch market is undergoing a technological transformation in the data center, driven by changes in data center networking.  It is clear that, by 2020, data centers will look significantly different from today's," said Alan Weckel, Vice President at Dell'Oro Group.  "How users access data centers will be forever changed, as will the way enterprises deploy and manage them, and the vendors that operate in this market.  The evolution towards 10 GE in the Enterprise and 25 GE in the Cloud is an opportunity for data center vendors and providers to garner an increased amount of IT spending, with vendors and providers that understand and embrace the technology change to virtualized data centers running at 10 GE or higher speeds having the opportunity to see their shares of IT spending increase and their market positions improve in the next several years," Weckel stated.

NEC Offers Pay as you Go Pricing for SDN Controller

NEC will offer pay-as-you-go pricing for its SDN ProgrammableFlow Controller.  Pricing increases in step with network capacity.

NEC introduces a ProgrammableFlow SDN Starter Pack, which is priced starting at $3,000 and provides the features of the ProgrammableFlow Controller software, but is designed for smaller SDN deployments, including departmental or lab deployments. The network easily scales up as capacity requirements grow.

"The new pricing enables customers to deploy networks of any size to seize the operational and performance benefits of Open Networking," said Don Clark, director, business development, NEC Corporation of America. "We are confident that once our customers experience the benefits of SDN, they will make it a part of their IT infrastructure."

NEC is also adding new capabilities to Version 6 that lets wide-area Ethernet fabrics stretch across the campus or metro area. A simple statement, and yet it is shorthand for an immensely complex process that begins fingers reaching out to hold down the shift key and tap the “H” key. Even that statement is just shorthand for a cascade of millions of neural events involving visual feedback guiding the activation of thousands of muscle cells co-operating to provide a precise physical action…

So how can I ever write a word without going crazy at all the complexity? Because tapping the “H” key was an automatic motor response, learned before I could even walk. Knowing which key to tap came later: learning to write at kindergarten. My decision to begin with that particular sentence reflected a later layer of learning – how to illustrate complex ideas by analogy. This layered abstraction of the human mind evolved over many millions of years, but computer science achieved something similar in just seven decades.

In computing terms, we see layered abstraction in the distinction between 1) hardware, 2) operating systems and 3) software applications: so that each computing layer can innovate without impacting layers above or below.

In networking and telecom operations, however, we still work in functional silos – for example we have separate inventory, provisioning performance and fault management systems. Each such functional system must hold detailed information of all network domains – like Optical, Ethernet or IP  (see Fig 1). A change in any one domain would require changes in all systems – and that takes extraordinary effort, time and money – as if I had to re-wire my neurons for every single keystroke.

The Third Network

MEF has recently announced its new vision: a Third Network to deliver business-class connectivity as a ubiquitous, on-demand service – rather than as a laborious and lengthy installation and commissioning process.

While Carrier Ethernet offers outstanding service quality, performance and security to the enterprise, establishing this business class service can take weeks or months ­– especially if the connection spans more than one service provider. But for the home or mobile worker, reliant on the Internet, their service is ubiquitous, immediate and on-demand – but it falls far short on quality, performance and security. The THIRD network promises the best of both those worlds.

The vital role of Service Orchestration

End-to-end Service Orchestration manages the entire lifecycle of connectivity services: Fulfilment, Control, Performance, Assurance, Usage, and Analytics. It holds detailed service inventory of all services in a layer or domain, providing the necessary APIs for information exchange between service providers and internal systems operating at other layers. It can be compared to those layers of intelligence in my brain that not only manage the automatic processes of body maintenance and immunity against disease, but also higher, learned skills like language, as well as critical decision making.

To illustrate how this works, consider the Cortx Service Orchestrator launched by CENX in September 2014. This product consists of a set of software modules that can be integrated within an existing network operation, utilizing open APIs to interface with existing systems.  Cortx has been specifically designed to support multi-layered network domains, and new technologies such as NFV and SDN, so it need only know and enforce the service level parameters, not how the service is implemented.

How does the brain manage complex physical actions? The first requirement must be continuous input from every nerve ending and sensory organ across the body: I can only move my finger to the “H” key if I know the position of myself and my finger, and can see where the target key is.

So the first essential Cortx function is Continuous Data Audit, to receive data from multiple sources right across the network – including OSS and test equipment. Just as in the brain, this would amount to a torrent of data that would overwhelm any legacy management system, but this system uses big data analytics to make sense of it. So the second essential function is Service Visualization: shaping this torrent of data into meaningful information by presenting it as a geographical or topological map revealing the end-to-end circuit path topology for on-net and off-net circuits and presenting a monitoring dashboard that includes status of network build (ENNIs, EVCs, UNIs), and the inventory, performance, and fault states of Ethernet and other connections.

The brain does something similar: presenting a torrent of nerve impulses from the optic nerve as a recognisable “H” key, towards which I can then direct my finger.

Once those two essential functions are satisfied, then any number of extra solution modules can be added as your needs evolve beyond inventory integrity assurance, to network build-out and implementation, and to end-to-end performance monitoring and management.

Already available for Network Monitoring and Management are:
  • Real-Time Troubleshooting – displaying near real-time state and monitoring data and isolating faults to the root cause. This reduces MTTR and truck rolls, and helps determine fault responsibility between SP networks.
  • Network Analytics – planning network capacity and managing CAPEX with superior reporting to allow just in time upgrades.
  • SLA Management – allowing service providers to manage SLA parameters as across multiple access vendors, and helping enterprises with visualization of near real-time performance metrics, and reporting.
  • Capacity Planningproviding fine-grained measurement of capacity, utilization, and performance in order to pinpoint where service is degrading and automating the capacity upgrade process.  This reduces the CAPEX and OPEX for upgrades.
To support Network Build and Implementation there are further modules:
  • Automated Reconciliation – re-populates inventory systems with clean data, and re-provisions network equipment to match inventory data, ensuring trustworthy data across the network.
  • Automated Ordering – translates order processes and formats between providers and customers, exchange tenants and access vendors. This reduces order fall-out and accelerates time to market.
  • Automated Provisioning – automatically configures network equipment functions, such as port selection, bandwidth, and service type, to initiate service provisioning. This improves the accuracy of network services provisioning and reduces fall-out.
  • Workflow Orchestration - coordinates workflows for full lifecycle of each service, triggering other modules, tracking workflow analytics in a dashboard.  This reduces service delivery intervals and operational cost due to automation. 

 Figure 2 summarizes these currently available modules and their potential applications.


Service Orchestration in practice

Today’s soaring data usage and high service expectations mean that providers must deploy their services ever more flexibly, quickly and with impressive quality from day one. This can only be achieved by Service Orchestration – automating the entire lifecycle of service ordering, provisioning, implementation, analytics, and assurance.

Just as there are no limits to the potential of an intelligent brain: so there are no limits to the number of ways that Service Orchestration can help cloud providers, service providers, large enterprises and anyone responsible for large, complex networks. So one example will be given – Fig 3.



This graph illustrates the increase in actual bandwidth demand for a mobile operator over six years (pale green) and the general estimate of bandwidth demand for an average cell site (straight red line).

Until now it has been necessary to plan for a major upgrade every three years, and this requires (black line) a huge margin of extra provisioning to allow for unexpected variations as well as the anticipated increase. There are many reasons for this, such as:
  • Legacy leased line backhaul requires physical installation and cannot offer granular bandwidth increases
  •  Lack of the sort of detailed data and analytics provided by Cortx means “just in case” provisioning with a wide margin for error
  • Lack of automation in the upgrade process requires considerable forward planning and a lot of manual labour.

 Service Orchestration makes it possible to upgrade more flexibly as well as more accurately. In this example we have simply increased the upgrade cycle from three years to one year (dark green line) to show a massive saving. “Wasted bandwidth” is shown as the blue striped area between the step-changed bandwidth and the actual light green bandwidth requirement – and the area of waste under the black line is vastly greater than that under the dark green line. What’s more, further savings could be made by reducing the upgrade cycle to six months or less. 

Conclusion

This article can offer only a glimpse of the potential benefits of end-to-end Service Orchestration – not only to deliver immediate improvements in visualizing, management agility and upgrade times for existing networks, but also to support migration to tomorrow’s NFV and SDN innovations.

As Glen Ragoonanan, Principal Analyst at Analysys Mason, points out: “SDN and NFV adoption is being inhibited by a lack of standards and immaturity of OSS, policy-based controller products that can integrate with operators’ existing environments”. Cortx is filling that gap by providing the performance and elasticity needed for NFV, network scalability and real-time big data analytics, while its open REST APIs allow faster integration for SDN controllers and NFV management.

NFV and SDN are key to the Third network future and its promises of lower CapEx and operating costs, as well as service potential and agility, but they demand a fundamentally new approach to managing network services – one that orchestrates services top-down, across both physical and virtualized infrastructures, across multiple vendors, and across multiple carriers.
