Antel tests VMware's Telco Cloud Platform

Antel, the leading Mobile Operator in Uruguay, is testing the VMware Telco Cloud Platform to support a Proof of Concept (PoC).

VMware says its cloud native architecture will help Antel gain operational efficiencies and bring services and innovation to market faster. Using this integrated platform will allow Antel to deploy new network functions on the same Telco Cloud architecture from core to RAN to edge, enabling the scale and agility needed to deliver services on the 5G network.

This PoC between Antel and VMware was made possible with the help of AT Innovando Juntos, a local partner; the three companies are working together to help Antel build a world class 5G network to support the growing demands of the consumer and enterprise customers in Uruguay.

VMware Cloud on Equinix Metal targets low latency

VMware and Equinix announced a new distributed cloud service that will deliver a more performant, secure, an cloud option to support enterprise applications. 

VMware Cloud on Equinix Metal will combine VMware-managed and supported cloud infrastructure as a service with Equinix’s interconnected, global Bare Metal as a Service offering. The service will extend customers’ cloud environments into distributed metro locations. The service is targeted at distributed cloud use cases including smart cities, video analytics, game development, real-time financial market trading, retail POS, and a variety of use cases using IoT and ML/Inference. The service will include VMware Cloud for consistent multi-cloud infrastructure and operations and Equinix Metal, an automated bare metal and interconnection offering delivered as a service across Equinix’s global International Business Exchange (IBX) footprint.

HPE GreenLake + VMware Cloud targets hybrid cloud

Hewlett Packard Enterprise and VMware are promising to deliver a joint solution with a simple pay-as-you-go hybrid cloud consumption model that combines HPE GreenLake and VMware Cloud.

VMware Cloud can be fully integrated across the HPE GreenLake portfolio including HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Enterprise and customers will be able to deploy on-premises, in colocation facilities or at the edge, all managed by HPE GreenLake.

The HPE GreenLake edge-to-cloud platform provides customers and partners with a unified experience and access to more than 70 cloud services. 

HPE GreenLake currently supports more than 120,000 users, powers more than two million connected devices, and manages more than one exabyte of data with customers worldwide. Among the top 100 HPE customers, nearly 80 percent have already adopted the HPE GreenLake platform. Organizations benefit from one platform from which to automate, orchestrate, and run their hybrid cloud strategy.

VMware Telco Cloud now supports 275+ VNFs and CNFs

VMware outlined significant progress with its Telco Cloud and automation platform, which now support over 275 virtual network functions (VNFs). The latest release of VMware Telco Cloud Platform adds the capability to:

• Upgrade control plane and worker node pools separately, amid management of cluster failures.
• Protect and better secure 5G networks from sophisticated security attacks with intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDPS) for east-west network traffic.
• Accelerate the deployment of network services with an expanding partner ecosystem of over 275 virtualized and containerized network functions (VNFs and CNFs) including Mavenir’s Converged Packet Core.

“The success of 5G rollouts hinges on the ability to disaggregate networks and roll out new services at a faster pace and larger scale,” said Ashok Khuntia, Mavenir’s President, Core Networks. “With Mavenir’s 5G Converged Packet Core certified through the VMware Ready for Telco Cloud program, we were able to quickly validate our CSAR package conformity as well as the steps for onboarding and lifecycle management of our network functions. Key announcements from VMwareExplore in San Francisco

At its annual conference in San Francisco this week, VMware announced a set of networking and security innovations centered around the "multi-cloud universe," including the release of vSphere 8 and vSAN 8, its flagship compute and storage solutions.

“Whether you’re a challenger born in the cloud or an established player, the ultimate destination for customers is a multi-cloud environment that empowers teams to accelerate their digital innovation,” said Raghu Raghuram, CEO, VMware. 

Highlights:

vSphere 8 DPUs:  The new release brings data processing units (DPUs) into the fold along with CPUs and GPUs to help supercharge workload performance. vSphere on DPUs, previously known as Project Monterey, was developed in partnership with  AMD, Intel and NVIDIA as well as OEM system partners Dell Technologies, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Lenovo. It enables the offloading and acceleration network and security infrastructure functions onto DPUs from CPUs. Customer applications that need high network bandwidth and fast cache access such as in-memory databases can expect better efficiency in CPU cores and higher transaction rates with lower latency. Running infrastructure services on DPUs and isolating them from the workload domain,  will also benefit infrastructure security. 

vSphere 8 GPUs: the new release doubles the virtual GPU devices per VM, delivering a 4x increase of passthrough devices, and supporting vendor device groups which enable binding of high-speed networking devices and the GPU. For DevOps teams, vSphere 8 will include VMware Tanzu Kubernetes Grid 2.0(3)—expanding Kubernetes capabilities to include multi-availability zones for improved resilience as well as simplified cluster lifecycle and package management. 

VMware vSAN 8: a new vSAN Express Storage Architecture is designed to enhance the performance, storage efficiency, data protection and management of vSAN running on the latest generation storage devices. vSAN 8 promises up to a 4x performance boost and increased availability due to a new storage pool construct that provides smaller fault domains, faster resync times, and native snapshots delivering up to 100x faster operations.

VMware Edge Compute Stack 2: new support for smaller cluster sizes to run containers efficiently on smaller COTS (commercial, off the shelf) hardware. Additionally, the release will also offer higher performance with GPU passthrough support to enable AI/ML use cases. In a future release, VMware, for the first time, will introduce initial support for non-x86 processor-based specialized small form factor edge platforms to simultaneously run IT/OT workloads and workflows on a single stack.

VMware Private Mobile Network (Beta): a new managed service from VMware that provides enterprises with private 4G/5G mobile connectivity in support of edge-native applications. VMware will empower partners with a single PMN orchestrator to operate multi-tenant private 4G/5G networks with an enterprise-grade solution. Building on VMware Edge Compute Stack, the service is seamlessly integrated with existing IT management platforms and incorporates VMware’s compute, network, security and edge intelligence solutions.

Project Northstar for multi-cloud networking, security and end-to-end visibility: Representing an advancement of its NSX platform, Project Northstar aims to transform how enterprises consume networking and security in a multi-cloud world. Project Northstar offers a centralized cloud-console for consistent and simplified software-as-a-service (SaaS) consumption. This family of services includes network & security policy management, network detection and response (NDR), network visibility and analytics (NSX Intelligence), advanced load balancing (ALB), and workload mobility (HCX) for private cloud environments and VMware Cloud deployments.

Expanded Carbon Black Cloud endpoint protection.  VMware is strengthening its lateral security capabilities by embedding network detection and visibility into Carbon Black Cloud's endpoint protection platform, which is now available to select customers in early access. This extended detection and response (XDR) telemetry adds network detection and visibility to endpoints with no changes to infrastructure or endpoints, providing customers with extended visibility into their environment across endpoints and networks leaving attackers nowhere to hide.

Project Trinidad: extends and advances VMware’s API security and analytics by deploying sensors on Kubernetes clusters. Project Trinidad uses machine learning with business logic inference to detect anomalous behavior in east-west traffic between microservices.

Project Watch: a new approach to multi-cloud networking and security that provides advanced app to app policy controls.  In technology preview, Project Watch will help network security and compliance teams to continuously observe, assess, and dynamically mitigate risk and compliance problems in composite multi-cloud applications. 

VMware NSX Gateway Firewall: adds a stateful active-active edge scale-out capability that significantly increases network throughput for stateful services. VMware now offers advanced threat prevention capabilities with IDPS, malware analysis, sandboxing, URL filtering, TLS proxy, stateful firewall, and stateful Network Address Translation (NAT) that extend centralized security controls to physical and virtual workloads at the data center and cloud edge.

VMware NSX Advanced Load Balancer: brings new bot management capabilities, while enhancing the security capabilities of its web application firewall, malware detection, security analytics, and DDoS protection. VMware NSX ALB’s ability to enforce API security policies in line with application delivery traffic helps customers in protecting their north-south APIs.

VMware's Q2 revenue rose 6% to $3.34 billion

VMware reported revenue for the second quarter of $3.34 billion, an increase of 6% from the second quarter of fiscal 2022. GAAP net income for the second quarter was $347 million, or $0.82 per diluted share, down 16% per diluted share compared to $411 million, or $0.97 per diluted share, for the second quarter of fiscal 2022. Non-GAAP net income for the second quarter was $697 million, or $1.64 per diluted share, down 6% per diluted share compared to $739 million, or $1.75 per diluted share, for the second quarter of fiscal 2022.

VMware observes a big uptake in cyberattacks

 In the past few months, there has been a significant uptick in cyberattacks, such as deepfakes, attacks on APIs, and cybercriminals targeting incident responders, according to VMware's newly released its eighth annual Global Incident Response Threat Report

“Cybercriminals are now incorporating deepfakes into their attack methods to evade security controls,” said Rick McElroy, principal cybersecurity strategist at VMware. “Two out of three respondents in our report saw malicious deepfakes used as part of an attack, a 13% increase from last year, with email as the top delivery method. Cybercriminals have evolved beyond using synthetic video and audio simply for influence operations or disinformation campaigns. Their new goal is to use deepfake technology to compromise organizations and gain access to their environment.”

Additional key findings from the report include:

• Cyber pro burnout remains a critical issue. Forty-seven percent of incident responders said they experienced burnout or extreme stress in the past 12 months, down slightly from 51% last year. Of this group, 69% (versus 65% in 2021) of respondents have considered leaving their job as a result. Organizations are working to combat this, however, with more than two-thirds of respondents stating their workplaces have implemented wellness programs to address burnout.
• Ransomware actors incorporate cyber extortion strategies. The predominance of ransomware attacks, often buttressed by e-crime groups’ collaborations on the dark web, has yet to let up. Fifty-seven percent of respondents have encountered such attacks in the past 12 months, and two-thirds (66%) have encountered affiliate programs and/or partnerships between ransomware groups as prominent cyber cartels continue to extort organizations through double extortion techniques, data auctions, and blackmail.
• APIs are the new endpoint, representing the next frontier for attackers. As workloads and applications proliferate, 23% of attacks now compromise API security. The top types of API attacks include data exposure (encountered by 42% of respondents in the past year), SQL and API injection attacks (37% and 34%, respectively), and distributed Denial-of-Service attacks (33%).
• Lateral movement is the new battleground. Lateral movement was seen in 25% of all attacks, with cybercriminals leveraging everything from script hosts (49%) and file storage (46%) to PowerShell (45%), business communications platforms (41%), and .NET (39%) to rummage around inside networks. An analysis of the telemetry within VMware Contexa, a full-fidelity threat intelligence cloud that’s built into VMware security products, discovered that in April and May of 2022 alone, nearly half of intrusions contained a lateral movement event.

Broadcom launches its $61 billion bid for VMware

VMware has established a Sovereign Cloud initiative to help governments and regulated industries to identify and engage with trusted national or regional cloud service providers to meet their unique sovereign cloud requirements. 

The newest VMware Sovereign Cloud designated partners are IONOS SE, Saudi Telecom Company (STC), Sopra Steria AS, and TDRA. Virgin Media O2 UK rolls with VMware Telco Cloud

Virgin Media O2 UK is using VMware Telco Cloud Infrastructure to design, build, test and implement virtualised network functions, boosting innovation across its network and the delivery of new services. The collaboration has underpinned the deployment of Virgin Media O2’s 5G network over the past 16 months.

VMware’s Telco Cloud Infrastructure delivers a single horizontal platform enabling Virgin Media O2 to simplify, scale, and better protect its core cloud networks. Operating a reliable, agile network that can be efficiently upgraded to maintain quality of coverage is fundamental to the success of Virgin Media O2’s 5G network – particularly in highly regulated and competitive markets.

Virgin Media O2 will also leverage VMware Tanzu for Telco's Kubernetes cluster capabilities to build Containers as a Service (CaaS) proficiency. This will support the next generation of containerised network functions and enable Virgin Media O2 to maintain and expand the network’s ability to support multi-vendor solutions. DISH tests VMware RAN Intelligent Controller

DISH Networks will trial VMware’s RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) as the platform on top of which RAN applications will run. DISH is already using VMware Telco Cloud Platform to run RAN workloads.

VMware RIC is a multi-RAN, multi-cloud platform that abstracts the underlying RAN infrastructure and can host both near-real-time applications (xApps) and non-real-time applications (rApps). These apps enable new capabilities – automation, optimization and service customization – that fuel innovation across a telco network.

DISH expects a rich ecosystem of xApps and rApps to take shape — almost like an App Store for the RAN. 

Sanjay Uppal, senior vice president and general manager of VMware’s Service Provider and Edge business unit, said, “DISH is building a first-of-its-kind network that will move the entire industry forward. VMware posts revenue of $3.53 billion, up 7% yoy

VMware reported Q4 revenue of $3.53 billion, an increase of 7% from the fourth quarter of fiscal 2021.  Non-GAAP net income for the fourth quarter was $855 million, or $2.02 per diluted share, down 9% per diluted share compared to $936 million, or $2.21 per diluted share, for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2021.

Revenue for fiscal year 2022 was $12.85 billion, an increase of 9% from fiscal 2021.

• The combination of subscription and SaaS and license revenue was $1.90 billion, an increase of 11% from the fourth quarter of fiscal 2021.
• Subscription and SaaS revenue for the fourth quarter was $868 million, an increase of 23% year-over-year.

VMware announces 4 executive appointments

VMware welcome 4 executives to its leadership team:

Laura Heisman has joined the company as chief marketing officer. She brings to the role more than 25 years experience in reaching enterprise, developer, consumer and corporate audiences through her prior leadership roles at GitHub, where she elevated awareness and built developer fans of the largest and most advanced development platform in the world, and Citrix.

Sylvain Cazard will lead the Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ) region as general manager. He has spent more than 12 years at VMware, he is adept at executing go-to-market strategy across multi-product and multi-cloud platforms to enable enterprise digital transformation. Prior to this, Cazard was vice president for the Central Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region. Sylvain takes over the reins of VMware’s APJ business from Duncan Hewett, who is retiring from his role at the company.

John Sabino will lead the company’s Customer Experience and Success organization, including the Customer Success, Professional Services, Learning, and Global Support team, as Chief Customer Experience Officer, recently joining from Splunk. 

Zia Yusuf serves as senior vice president of Strategic Ecosystem and Industry Solutions. In this role, Yusuf is responsible for building joint horizontal and industry-centric solutions with our ecosystem and alliances across Dell, global cloud providers, telco service providers, global system integrators, and global ISVs. VMware hits Q3 sales of $3.19 billion, up 11%

VMware announced revenue for the third quarter was $3.19 billion, an increase of 11% from the third quarter of fiscal 2021. Non-GAAP net income for the third quarter was $725 million, or $1.72 per diluted share, up 3% per diluted share compared to $704 million, or $1.66 per diluted share, for the third quarter of fiscal 2021.

Vodafone picks VMware for automation and orchestration across Europe

Vodafone has selected the VMware Telco Cloud Platform to automate and orchestrate all workloads running on its core networks across Europe, starting with 5G standalone (5G SA).

Vodafone has already begun the rollout of VMware Telco Cloud Platform in eight markets – Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Romania, and U.K. – and will expand to all 11 of its European markets over time. 

VMware Telco Cloud Platform is a cloud-native platform that enables service providers to rapidly deploy and efficiently operate multi-vendor CNFs and VNFs with agility and scalability across 5G and other networks that span from the core and the edge to the radio access network (RAN). The two fundamental elements of this architecture are VMware Telco Cloud Infrastructure and VMware Telco Cloud Automation – both of which Vodafone will deploy across its European markets.

Vodafone previously announced its selection of VMware Telco Cloud Infrastructure as its Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) platform. Last year, Vodafone completed the rollout of Telco Cloud Infrastructure across all its European business and 21 markets in total.

VMware completes spin-Off from Dell Technologies

VMware completed its spin-off from Dell Technologies. The move provides VMware increased freedom to execute its multi-cloud strategy, a simplified capital structure and governance model, and additional operational and financial flexibility. VMware and Dell said they will continue to partner with each other and to continue support/services to mutual customers.
