Credo samples low-power optical DSPs with integrated DML drivers

Credo introduced two high-performance, low-power optical DSPs that come with the integrated directly modulated laser (DML) drivers critical to supporting high-density data center design and optical transport networks.

  • The Seagull 52 can be used as a bitmux or retimer in next generation QSFP28, DSFP, SFP-DD and SFP56 optical transceivers. In bitmux mode, the DSP is configured with two lanes of 25Gbps NRZ on the host side to one 53.125Gbps (26.5625GBd) PAM-4 lane on the line side. In retimer mode, Seagull 52 is configured as one lane of 53.125Gbps PAM-4 to one lane of 53.125Gbps PAM-4. Legacy data rates are supported for backwards compatibility. Seagull 52 supports industrial temperatures of -40°C to +85°C and can be used in 5G wireless front, mid, and back haul, and high-density data centers.
  • The Seagull 202 DSP is a full duplex product that can be used in next generation 4x50Gbps QSFP28 optical transceivers for high density data centers.

Both products include a high-performance DSP engine. The DSP engine enables uncooled direct modulated lasers (DML) to be used in applications requiring industrial temperature, due to the increased non-linearities and signal impairments associated with the channel and optics of the engine. The DSP engine also enables use over an extended range of wavelengths in wavelength division multiplying (WDM) applications. The optical line side transmitters include integrated DML drivers with programmable laser currents to simplify module design. A number of test and debug features enable rapid bring-up, simplified lab and production testing, and reduced time to market.

NTT DOCOMO runs Nokia's AI radio frequency capacity planning

NTT DOCOMO is using Nokia's Artificial Intelligence (AI) Radio Frequency (RF) capacity planning software.

The AI RF capacity planning solution is part of Nokia’s Automation Visualization Analytics software offering that delivers “intelligence everywhere.” It was customized based on DOCOMO’s requirements and can predict RF capacity of 4G cells from BTS performance data; and simulate the best candidate locations of 5G cell and RAN hardware to meet required area capacity.

The software supports DOCOMO’s ongoing work to achieve a clearer understanding of where its network is starting to get congested and where to plan network upgrades to prevent capacity bottlenecks.

Coherent wins DARPA contract for Space-BACN program

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded contract to Coherent to develop coherent optical transceiver technology for the agency’s Space-Based Adaptive Communications Node (Space-BACN) program. The aim of Space-BACN is to create low-cost, high-speed, reconfigurable, laser-based data links that will enable communications between various government and private-sector low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellite constellations.

Under the contract, Coherent is specifically tasked with designing and fabricating coherent optical transceivers for a reconfigurable modem compatible with most existing single-wavelength communications protocols and able to readily adapt to work with new waveforms as they are introduced. The goal is to support multiple optical waveforms at total data rates of up to 100 Gbps on a single wavelength, while simultaneously meeting stringent size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C) constraints.

Dell'Oro: Campus switch sales beat expectations in 2Q

Worldwide Campus Switch sales were up 5% in 2Q 2022, surpassing expectations of a low single-digit growth as vendors were able to circumvent some of the supply challenges, according to a new report from Dell'Oro Group. On a trailing four-quarter basis, Arista, Juniper, and Ubiquiti gained share outside of China.

“While demand remains strong across the board, the market performance continues to be defined predominantly by the supply environment,” said Sameh Boujelbene, Senior Director at Dell’Oro Group. “When we entered the second quarter, many vendors sent warning signals that the supply situation is expected to further tighten, especially with the multi-week Covid lockdowns in China. Surprisingly, some of the vendors’ efforts to navigate these supply issues started to bear fruits, allowing them to fulfill a higher level of shipments than anticipated. These efforts include multi-sourcing strategies, product re-design to accommodate different components, and use of the brokerage market, among others.

“As supply remains tight, market share shifts may be subject to wild quarterly variations that may not be necessarily reflective of competitive displacements, but rather the timing of shipments. In an attempt to neutralize some of these quarterly variations, we looked at revenue share on a trailing-four quarter basis. In doing so, it appeared there hasn’t been a significant market share movement outside of China, with the exception of Cisco and HPE losing about half a point of revenue share to Arista, Juniper, and Ubiquiti,” added Boujelbene.

Additional highlights from the 2Q 2022 Ethernet Switch – Campus Report:

  • Revenue growth surpassed that of shipments, suggesting that average sales prices (ASPs) were up during the quarter, mostly the result of a more favorable product mix. Although supply challenges are causing vendors to raise their list prices, these pricing actions won’t start to significantly impact market results until later in the year due to elongated lead times.
  • Huawei regained the leading revenue position in China, after being displaced by H3C in the prior quarter.
  • 5/5.0 Gbps ports were up 39 percent Y/Y, following the decline last quarter which was mostly due to supply issues. Despite this robust growth, 2.5/5.0 Gbps comprised only 1 percent of the ports shipped during the quarter.

Verizon serves nearly 48% of its cell sites with owned fiber

Verizon now connects nearly 48% of its cell sites with its own deployed fiber optic cables and is on track to reach about 50% by the end of this year.

In June Verizon announced that data traffic on its 5G Ultra Wideband network had already increased 249%, and it expects continued increases as more customers adopt the new technology and begin to experience the robust capabilities and performance of 5G Ultra Wideband. 

Verizon has also announced plans to upgrading older router equipment with new equipment capable of 400 Gbps per port.

Verizon has deployed 8,000 virtualized cell sites

Verizon has now deployed over 8,000 virtualized cell sites with a goal of deploying over 20,000 by the end of 2025.

Aalyria envisions satellite-to-surface mesh with free space optics

Aalyria, a start-up based in Livermore, California, with roots in Google's now-disbanded Project Loon, emerged from stealth to unveil its ambitions for satellite communications.

Verizon tests 200 MHz of C-band spectrum

Verizon completed lab trials using 200 MHz of C-band spectrum for 5G – a significant increase from the 60 MHz of spectrum it has deployed in 5G markets to date. 

Last month, Verizon announced it was beginning to deploy 5G over 100 MHz of the spectrum.

Verizon won C-Band licenses for between 140-200 MHz in all available markets, and began in the first 46 areas deploying up to 60 MHz. Over the next few years as additional spectrum is cleared by satellite companies, Verizon will be able to deploy 5G Ultra Wideband on all available bandwidth that it has licensed, up to 200 MHz. Every piece of equipment being deployed today is capable of the full 200MHz of bandwidth.

“Imagine adding several more lanes to a highway,” said Adam Koeppe, Senior Vice President of Technology and Planning at Verizon. “The more lanes, the more cars can get on and off the interstate and the faster they can drive. In the same way, the more spectrum we open up on our network, the more data can move across our network faster and more efficiently.”

Kaloom raises $21 million for cloud-native edge networking


Kaloom, a start-up based in Montreal, has secured  an additional US$21 million for its programmable and automated cloud-native edge center networking software solution. 

Kaloom's Cloud Edge Fabric is an automated and programmable network fabric with built-in support for network slicing featuring an embedded multi-Terabit per second (Tbps) 5G UPF that is a highly performant, scalable, low latency cloud native solution. 

The new investment came from the Quebec government and current investor, Alternative Capital Group (ACG), who matched the government of Quebec’s investment.

Black Hawk flight data transferred via AT&T 5G

In a test conducted last month at Lockheed Martin's Sikorsky headquarters in Stratford, Connecticut, AT&T securely and rapidly transferred UH-60M Black Hawk health and usage data through an AT&T 5G private cellular network and Lockheed Martin's 5G.MIL multi-site pilot network.

The AT&T 5G millimeter wave private cellular network wirelessly transferred data to the 5G.MIL network through ground support equipment from the Black Hawk's Integrated Vehicle Health Management System (IVHMS). The data was then routed to local Sikorsky networks for processing and distribution through the secure Lockheed Martin 5G.MIL pilot network to the Waterton, Colorado, 5G test range site.

Currently, it takes Black Hawk crews about 30 minutes to remove the IVHMS data cartridge from the helicopter, transport it to an operations center and extract the data for analysis. Lockheed Martin used AT&T 5G private cellular technologies to reduce the time required to less than 5 minutes including cartridge removal, demonstrating the potential benefits in time and cost for military and commercial helicopter operations. 

The companies said the test demonstrated that 5G  on the flight line can support accelerated maintenance operations and improved aircraft readiness. It also proved highly secure interoperability between the AT&T millimeter wave 5G private cellular network and the 5G.MIL pilot network.

"These 5G capabilities deployed at scale are expected to enable high-speed, secure-data transfer on virtually any flight line, providing another example of how we're advancing our 21st Century Security vision by improving customer readiness and operations," said Dan Rice, vice president of 5G.MIL Programs at Lockheed Martin. Dell'Oro: Q2 surge in data center switch sales

Global data center switch sales grew in excess of 20 percent in 2Q 2022, reaching an all-time high for the quarter as well as for the first half of the year, according to a new report from Dell'Oro Group. The growth was broad-based across a number of vendors. However, only Arista and white box vendors were able to gain revenue share during the quarter.

“We have been forecasting a double-digit growth in the market; driven by ongoing strong customer demand, balanced by supply challenges,” said Sameh Boujelbene, Senior Research Director at Dell’Oro Group. “However, vendors’ ability to work through these supply challenges and deliver the level of shipment witnessed during the quarter beat our expectations, although it came at higher logistics and component costs. We expect supply constraints to persist through the remainder of the year and to continue to shape the market as well as vendors’ performance,” added Boujelbene.

Additional highlights from the 2Q 2022 Ethernet Switch – Data Center Report:

  • Double-digit growth was recorded across all major customer segments: Cloud Service Providers (SPs), Telco SPs as well as Large Enterprises. Each one of these segments reached a record revenue level for the quarter and the first half of the year.
  • The robust growth was broad-based across all regions, including China which has experienced several weeks of lockdown in multiple cities during the quarter.
  • 200 Gbps and 400 Gbps approached 2 M ports and comprised more than 10 percent of the shipments and nearly 20 percent of the revenues during the quarter. As anticipated, this growth was driven by an accelerated adoption from large Cloud SPs as well as some deferred revenues that got recognized during the quarter.

Telia Finland implements Nokia's 5G network slicing for FWA

Telia Finland is deploying of the world’s first commercial 5G standalone (SA) network with network slicing for Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services. 

Nokia will upgrade Telia’s entire 5G Radio Access Network infrastructure to enable 5G slicing utilizing equipment from its comprehensive AirScale portfolio including 5G radio and baseband products. Nokia’s industry-leading, energy-efficient 5G AirScale network portfolio delivers best-in-class connectivity and supports mobile operators rapidly transitioning to 5G standalone networks. 5G SA is the foundation for some of the most transformative 5G use cases such as cloud gaming and extended reality.

The capability enables Telia Finland to offer a range of broadband deals with guaranteed service levels to its customers by dynamically allocating a portion of the network for 5G FWA.

Wolfspeed develops massive silicon carbide plant for wafers

Wolfspeed unveiled plans to build a new, state-of-the-art, multi-billion-dollar materials manufacturing facility in Chatham County, North Carolina. 

The new facility is targeted to generate a more than 10 fold increase from Wolfspeed’s current Silicon Carbide production capacity on its Durham campus. The facility will primarily produce 200mm Silicon Carbide wafers, which are 1.7x larger than 150mm wafers, translating into more chips per wafer and ultimately, lower device costs. These wafers will be used to supply Wolfspeed’s Mohawk Valley Fab, which opened earlier this year as the world’s first, largest and only fully automated 200mm Silicon Carbide fabrication facility.

Phase one construction is anticipated to be completed in 2024 and cost approximately $1.3 billion. Between 2024 and the end of the decade, the company will add additional capacity as needed, eventually occupying more than one million square feet on the 445-acre site.
