BT signs 5-year preferred cloud deal with AWS

BT’s Digital unit announced a five-year deal naming Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its preferred cloud as it transforms legacy infrastructure and internal applications to a new cloud-first architecture. 

Over the next five years, BT intends to continue to make significant investments and use of AWS technology to accelerate its digital transformation with a particular focus on application workloads via containers and serverless technologies.

“We have a big opportunity when it comes to modernising our infrastructure, and our collaboration with AWS is a key one for us as we deliver the transformation needed to accelerate BT,” comments Thomas Dücke, Chief Operating Officer, BT Digital.

Nokia demos 600G over 1008km with TIM

TIM successfully carried a 600G wavelength transmission over a 1008km live link over its terrestrial backbone network in Italy. 

The trial was performed on a long-haul route connecting TIM’s live network of mixed SMF/LEAF fiber spanning the breadth of Italy, using Nokia’s 1830 PSI-M compact modular disaggregated transport system. TIM and Nokia demonstrated error-free performance at 600Gb/s over a 1008km link from Torino to Rome, consisting of 18 fiber spans and through five ROADMs nodes, and 400Gb/s over a 2140km link from Torino to Catania, Sicily, consisting of 37 fiber spans and 12 ROADMs nodes.

TIM’s existing long-haul network is based on Nokia’s CDC-F ROADM architecture

Operating with 100GHz WDM channels to maximize network capacity, this trial sets a milestone spectral efficiency record of 6.0bits/sec/Hz over TIM’s strategic long-haul routes.

Lightpath now connects 2,000 wireless towers

Lightpath, which operates an all-fiber network in the New York and Boston metro regions, now connects 2,000 wireless towers.  This represent a doubling of on-net wireless sites in the last 12 months.

Carriers can choose flexible connectivity including 10G optical, dark fiber, or custom connectivity, with optical transport services now riding on Lightpath's state-of-the-art Ciena network. Additionally, Lightpath offers carriers geographically diverse routing options and unique POPs (points of presence) that enhance the reliability of network design.

Telecom Infra Project opens TIP Academy with Accenture

The Telecom Infra Project has opened an online TIP Academy for upskilling the telecoms industry.

The TIP Academy, which was developed in collaboration with Accenture, will offer courses that center on the wide range of open disaggregated solutions that are currently in development. The courses will be enriched with case studies and online events that allow the members of the TIP Academy community to learn from real-world experiences, such as insights from tests in TIP Community Labs and pilot trials, which can then be utilized within their respective organizations.

The first curriculum on the platform is centered on Open RAN, delivering the only comprehensive end-to-end training in the industry. The complete curriculum will include more than 20 modules, starting from the fundamentals to more advanced topics, such as Open RAN System Integration or TCO and Business Evolution. They are self-sufficient content blocks that are reused and mixed.

Learners will be able to access TIP Academy content through an interactive, multimedia e-learning platform, and follow through a curriculum, alone or in groups, with self-assessments and tests incorporated to support the learning. All the self-learning assets are designed to match competencies and learning objectives—from beginners to architects. At the end of a curriculum, a given learner will receive a TIP Academy certificate. In the near future, TIP intends to list those organizations with employees who have successfully completed training and received TIP Academy certificates, onto TIP Exchange.

AT&T opens PoP within NJFX Cable Landing Station

 

AT&T has activated a network Point-of-Presence (PoP) within the NJFX Cable Landing Station (CLS) colocation campus located in Wall, NJ.

The new PoP will provide access for customers to directly interconnect with subsea capacity services across the Atlantic to Europe and Latin America. International-based customers can transport data to AT&T’s PoP and extend their reach to major U.S. metro markets via their robust U.S. backbone system. Customers can also interexchange traffic across the multiple subsea cable systems available at NJFX, including TGN1, TGN2, and Seabras.

Rambus to acquire Hardent for semiconductor design team

Rambus agreed to acquire Hardent, a professional services company specializing in electronic product design and engineering. The company, which is based in Montreal, has 20 years of semiconductor experience in silicon design, verification, compression, and Error Correction Code (ECC). Financial terms were not disclosed.

Rambus says the acquisition augments its team of engineers at Rambus and accelerates the development of CXL processing solutions for next-generation data centers. In addition, Hardent brings complementary IP and services to the Rambus Silicon IP portfolio, expanding the customer base and design wins in automotive and consumer electronic applications.

Cisco tunes its predictive analytics engine

Cisco is bringing together new predictive technologies with its broad portfolio of observability, visibility and intelligence technologies to improve reliability and performance across all operational scenarios. 

The idea is to offer a predictive analytics engine that leverages telemetry data with predictive models developed with customers across a variety of industry segments to predict user experience issues, providing problem solving options.

T-Mobile US pushes 5G Home Internet

One year after launching its fixed 5G Home Internet service, T-Mobile unveiled a number of incentives to accelerate the business under the slogan "Internet Freedom":

  • Free Test Drive. Customers can try Home Internet for 15 days, worry-free. If they like it, great! If not, return the gateway and owe nothing. It’s 100% On Us. Because it’s wireless, they can keep their old provider while testing the T-Mobile service.
  • T-Mobile will cover break-up fees with the old broadband provider. T-Mobile will cover all early termination fees up to $500.
  • Price Lock. A customer’s price is locked in at just $50 per month, with no monthly taxes or fees, for as long as they are a customer. 

Some additional notes from the company's online event:

  •  The T-Mobile 5G Home Internet service is now available to approximately 40 million homes and businesses across the country.
  • T-Mobile's 5G network currently has 110 MHz of nationwide spectrum available in the sub 6-GHz bands.
  • The average downlink speed on the 5G Home service is 140 Mbps.
  • Average usage is 300~400 GB per month. About 10% of customers use 1 TB per month

Google acquires Raxium for MicroLED display technologies

Google has acquired Raxium, a start-up based in Fremont, California developing single panel MicroLED display technologies. Financial terms were not disclosed.

GlobalConnect Carrier deploys Infinera’s ICE6 optical engine over 3rd party line system

GlobalConnect Carrier has deployed Infinera’s ICE6 technology across its live international long-haul network using GlobalConnect’s existing third-party line system.

Leveraging Infinera’s ICE6 optical engine technology on the GX Series Compact Modular Platform, GlobalConnect achieved error-free transmission at 800G over 770 km on its international backbone between Stockholm and Malmö.

Infinera notes that GlobalConnect has also leveraged ICE6 over its Swedish national backbone network, which uses Infinera’s XTM Series metro and regional packet optical platform.

Ericsson opens Global Utilities Innovation Center in Texas

Ericsson opened a Global Utilities Innovation Center at its facility in Plano, Texas to engage with partners addressing real-world connectivity challenges for utility companies.

The Global Utilities Innovation Center is integrated with Ericsson’s state-of-the art device testing lab a short distance from the Plano site, where utilities and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) partners can test interoperability of their field and IoT devices over mission-critical networks in a safe and secure environment. Lumentum posts strong revenue of $395.4 million

Lumentum reported net revenue for its fiscal third quarter of 2022 of $395.4 million, with GAAP net income of $26.0 million, or $0.35 per diluted share. Net revenue for the fiscal second quarter of 2022 was $446.7 million, with GAAP net income of $56.7 million, or $0.75 per diluted share. Net revenue for the fiscal third quarter of 2021 was $419.5 million, with GAAP net income of $225.5 million, or $2.85 per diluted share. Non-GAAP net income for the fiscal third quarter of 2022 was $88.9 million, or $1.19 per diluted share. Non-GAAP net income for the fiscal second quarter of 2022 was $120.2 million, or $1.60 per diluted share. Non-GAAP net income for the fiscal third quarter of 2021 was $99.7 million, or $1.26 per diluted share.

"Our results were at the high end of our guidance on all metrics in the third quarter due to solid execution on a global basis," said Alan Lowe, President and CEO.  "Demand for our products continues to accelerate, and we now expect demand to outpace component supplies by more than $100 million in the fourth quarter.  Our fourth quarter revenue is expected to increase from the third quarter, primarily driven by Telecom product shipments."

Mr. Lowe added, "I am highly optimistic about our outlook and believe market inflections beneficial to Lumentum in our addressable markets will drive double-digit revenue growth in fiscal 2023 and beyond."

Fastly searches for a new CEO

 Fastly's Board of Directors has initiated a search to identify the next CEO to replace Joshua Bixby, who will step down as CEO and from the Fastly Board of Directors once the transition is complete.

“I am incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished during my time at Fastly. We’ve expanded our platform to capture current and future growth and built a world-class leadership team that can confidently take us into the future,” said Joshua Bixby, CEO of Fastly. 

Under Bixby’s leadership, Fastly’s revenue increased at a 33% CAGR from 2019 to 2021, with total customer count growing at a 27% CAGR and enterprise customer count at a 24% CAGR. Fastly has expanded its presence from 26 countries and 55 markets in Q1 2020 to 34 countries and 75 markets in Q1 2022.

Bixby has served as CEO since February 2020 and prior to that held the role of President from May 2017 to February 2020. He has been on the executive leadership team at Fastly since December 2015 and previously served in a part-time advisory role beginning in 2013. During his tenure as Fastly’s CEO, Bixby oversaw the successful acquisition of Signal Sciences and the launch of Fastly’s new Next-Gen WAF. He also recruited seasoned senior leadership team members including Fastly’s current CFO, CRO, CMO and CPO.
