Cisco Unveils 400G Network Processor for SDN

Cisco unveiled its nPower X1 integrated network processor -- the first generation of a new line of custom-developed silicon designed for programmatically handling high volumes of transactions at high data rates.

Cisco said its nPower X1 is purpose-built for software-defined networking (SDN), enabling on-the-fly reprogramming for new levels of service agility and simplified network operation.  


Key features include:
  • 400 Gigabits-per-second (Gbps) throughput to enable multi-terabit network performance.  All packet processing, traffic management and input/output functions are integrated on a single nPower X1 and operate at high performance and scale.
  • Highest-performing programmable control designed to seamlessly handle hundreds of millions of unique transactions per second.  The nPower's industry-leading processing architecture is purpose built for machine-driven events and ultra-high-definition video applications.
  • 4 billion transistors on a single chip for performance, functionality, programmability, and scale.
  • Enables solutions with eight times the throughput and one quarter the power per bit compared with Cisco's previous industry-leading network processor. 

In a blog post, Nikhil Jayaram, VP of Engineering, writes:

OpenDaylight Hydrogen -- an Open Source SDN Platform

The OpenDaylight Project introduced "Hydrogen" -- the first release of its modular, open source SDN platform.  The architecture aims to empower multiple use cases from enterprise IT to network providers to cloud service providers.

OpenDaylight Hydrogen includes new and legacy protocols such as OVSDB, OpenFlow 1.3.0, BGP and PCEP. It also includes multiple methods for network virtualization and two initial applications that leverage the features of OpenDaylight: Affinity Metadata Service to aid in policy management and Defense4All for Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack protection. A plugin for OpenStack Neutron has been integrated, and the Open vSwitch Database project will allow management from within OpenStack.

Projects were contributed by Cisco, ConteXtream, Ericsson, IBM, Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), NEC, Pantheon, Plexxi, Radware and developers Brent Salisbury and Evan Zeller from the University of Kentucky.

“The OpenDaylight community is developing an SDN architecture that supports a wide range of protocols and can rapidly evolve in the direction SDN goes, not based on any one vendor’s purposes,” said David Meyer, Technical Steering Committee chair, OpenDaylight Project. “As an open source project OpenDaylight can be a core component within any SDN architecture, putting the user in control. Risto Siilasmaa: Nokia Reinvented

Even after the pending sale of its mobile devices and services to Microsoft, Nokia will remain a strong company with clearly defined interests in network equipment, location cloud services, and technology development, writes Risto Siilasmaa, the chairman of Nokia’s board, on the company blog.

"With the recent decision, 32,000 of our 88,000 employees and little less than half of the trailing 12 month revenues move to Microsoft. This is truly a transformational change for Nokia."

Siilasmaa outlines 3 elements of the new Nokia Reinvented:

NSN -- supplying technology and infrastructure to operators worldwide, with strengths in LTE and its Liquid Applications portfolio.

HERE -- becoming the leading location cloud business through an offering across connected devices, enterprise solutions and car.

FCC and Carriers Resolve Lower 700 MHz Interoperability Issue

The FCC and mobile operators announced an agreement that resolves handset interoperability issues in the lower 700 MHz bands.

The FCC's Acting Chairwoman, Mignon Clyburn issued the following statement:

"After many frustrating years, wireless carriers have finally reached a voluntary industry solution that will resolve the lack of interoperability in the lower 700 MHz band in the most efficient manner. This is a big win for consumers, especially in rural areas, who will see more competition and more choices. Also, by making it easier for small wireless carriers to compete, today's interoperability solution will spur private investment, job creation, and the development of innovative new services and devices.  "That's why for the past few years, I have been consistent in pushing for a final resolution to this issue. Thank you to all the parties - AT&T, The Interoperability Alliance, The Competitive Carriers Association, DISH, and the consumer advocacy groups - who came to the table and worked collaboratively with FCC staff to hammer out a solution that benefits all consumers.

Radisys Demos End-to-End Virtualized LTE Network in a Box

Radisys showcased a end-to-end virtualized LTE network at this week's Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in San Francisco.

The Radisys LTE network demo features a virtualized small cell, LTE packet core and IMS Media Resource Function with performance optimized with the Intel Data Plane Development Kit. Running on the Radisys T-Series platform, the interactive demo features QoS optimized services including VoLTE, Video Optimization and Conferencing with Apple, Samsung and HTC clients.

Key elements of the demo:

Extreme Networks to Acquire Enterasys for $180 Million

Extreme Networks agreed to acquire all outstanding stock of Enterasys in an all cash transaction valued at $180 million.

Enterasys Networks, based in Salem, NH, is a privately held provider of wired and wireless network infrastructure and security solutions.  It has approximately 900 employees and $330 million in annual revenues.

Extreme Networks, which is based in San Jose, California, specializes in high-performance Ethernet switching for cloud, data center and mobile networks.

Extreme Networks has received a preliminary debt commitment to finance at least $75 million of the purchase price, with the balance to be funded from cash on hand.

The companies said they are committed to continue to support the product roadmaps of both companies going forward.

"Since its first release in 2004, ExtremeXOS has been developed with a Linux abstraction layer that makes it relatively easy to extend ExtremeXOS to support other vendors' switching hardware," said Chuck Berger, President and CEO of Extreme Networks.  "Combining Enterasys technologies and products including their Coreflow modular switches, IdentiFi wireless and the NetSight system management application will extend and complement our product offering which we expect will provide significant added value to the current customers of both Extreme and Enterasys."

Live Satellite Testing of 4k UltraHD Delivery

Ericsson, Eutelsat Communications, Globecast, Newtec and SKY Italia have completed a series of live tests focused on the reliability of an end-to-end satellite-based delivery chain for contribution of live images in 4k.

The companies said the success of these tests prove that the satellite delivery chain is able to feed Ultra HD television channels.

The 4k feed was produced by SKY Italia in Quad HD format (3480x2160) at 60 progressive frames per second (fps) using different camera brands and video mixers.

The live sequences from the mixers were then delivered in the form of a quadruple 3G-SDI signal to Ericsson ' s Content Acquisition solution. Using Ericsson AVP 2000 Contribution Encoders, that are able to provide true 4k Ultra HD contribution feeds, the signal was compressed in MPEG4 AVC at 60 progressive frame rates per second and 10-bit, 4:2:2 resolution.

The signal was then modulated by the Newtec AZ110 Satellite Modulator, using DVB-S2 16APSK Modulation, making 89 Mbit/s of throughput available over a conventional 36MHz Ku transponder on board the EUTELSAT 5 West A satellite located at 5° West.

The satellite uplink was performed and monitored by Globecast from one of its HD SNG trucks, equipped with a 1.5m antenna and 400W amplifier.

The feed was received in Milan and in Southampton with 2.4m antennas. Signal availability was higher than 99.97%. The sequences were then received via 4x Ericsson RX8200 Advanced Modular Receivers feeding a Quad HD professional display.

Savvis Adds Aquis Exchange to Global Network of Venues

CenturyLink's Savvis division announced plans to expand connectivity to Aquis Exchange, the proposed pan-European equities trading exchange and software developer.

Aquis Exchange, which has applied for regulatory approval as a multilateral trading facility from the UK FCA, was established in October 2012 with the aim of strengthening competition in the European trading landscape through the introduction of subscription pricing and innovative order types, which can lower trading costs for market participants.

Savvis Markets Infrastructure provides enhanced network and latency management tools, plus access to more than 200 exchange and liquidity venue feeds, to financial service organizations across the globe.

CenturyLink wins FCC Cloud Contract

CenturyLink was awarded a cloud hosting contract from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) valuded at up to $1.1 million over the next three years.

The delivery order was awarded to Savvis Federal Systems Inc., a CenturyLink company. The company will provide managed, scalable public cloud hosting services for www.fcc.gov, myfcc.gov and the commission's other public website domains. The contract is for infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and includes migration of the existing website infrastructure to a CenturyLink cloud data center.

Last year, CenturyLink won two task orders to provide private Wide Area Network (WAN) services and Managed Trusted Internet Protocol Services (MTIPS) to the FCC. The two task orders could be worth close to $10 million over the course of five years.

Broadcom Unveils STB Chipsets for 4K UltraHD

Broadcom introduced new set-top box chipsets supporting UltraHD subscriber hardware and content.  These new set-top box (STB) devices for satellite, cable and IP integrate support for the advanced high-efficiency video codec (HEVC) standard H.265 that will allow existing high-speed data networks to better utilize the higher throughput required by UltraHD content.

Broadcom said its new designs have been architected to support UltraHD/4k up to Main10profile and up to 60 frames per second.  They are designed to rapidly incorporate the latest HDMI 2.0 digital TV interface standard.

"Broadcom first pioneered UltraHD technology with the introduction of the BCM7445, the world's first 4Kx2K TV home gateway chip, in January of this year," said Rich Nelson, Broadcom Senior Vice President of Marketing, Broadband Communications Group. SaskTel Tests 400G Optical Transport with Alcatel-Lucent

SaskTel, the full service communications provider in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, has conducted a trial of 400G optical transport technology in partnership with Alcatel-Lucent.

The trial took place on a live network between Regina, the provincial capital of Saskatchewan, and Saskatoon more than 250 km away on a network originally designed for 10G. 


Cisco Aims for Citywide Wi-Fi and Connected Services

Cisco introduced its Smart+Connected City Wi-Fi integrated solution geared toward helping municipalities provide citywide connectivity.  The aim is to establish a platform where the Internet of Things (IoT) can be fully utilized to develop new services for citizens.

Smart+Connected City Wi-Fi integrates Cisco technologies to provide a practical and holistic approach for citywide wireless connectivity with high levels of security and privacy for location-based services.

The portfolio includes the Cisco Wi-Fi outdoor mesh, Cisco’s ruggedized routing and switching IoT portfolio, Cisco Prime and Mobility Services Engine (MSE) technologies.

Smart+Connected City Wi-Fi creates city-managed outdoor Wi-Fi networks that optimize security of the data being transmitted and collected across the city. The solution is built via a three-layer logical architecture composed of the street layer (outdoor access points), city network layer (which connects hardware to the data center) and data network layer (which provides resources to enable city Wi-Fi applications and services).

European Commission Adopts its Most Ambitious Telecom Market Reforms

The European Commission adopted its most ambitious plan in 26 years of telecoms market reform with the goal to "reduce consumer charges, simplify red tape faced by companies, and bring a range of new rights for both users and service providers, so that Europe can once again be a global digital leader."

The “Connected Continent” legislative package, which was outlined by Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso in his 2013 State of the Union speech, will lead to the EU-wide and roaming-free mobile plans; make it easier for companies to operate across national borders; establish the first-ever EU-wide protection of net neutrality; and abolish premiums for international phone calls within Europe.

Key elements of the "Connected Continent" legislation include:

Simplifying EU rules for telecoms operators

A single authorization for operating in all 28 member states (instead of 28 authorisations), a demanding legal threshold for regulating telecoms sub-markets (which should lead to a reduction in number of regulated markets), and further harmonizing the way operators can rent access to networks owned by other companies in order to provide a competing service.

Pushing roaming premiums out of the market

Incoming call charges while travelling in the EU would be banned from 1 July 2014. Companies would have the choice to either 1) offer phone plans that apply everywhere in the European Union ("roam like at home"), the price of which will be driven by domestic competition, or 2) allow their customers to “decouple”, that is: opt for a separate roaming provider who offers cheaper rates (without having to buy a new SIM card). 

No more international call premiums within Europe

Today companies tend to charge a premium for both fixed and mobile calls made from a consumer's home country to other EU countries. Today's proposal would mean companies cannot charge more for a fixed intra-EU call than they do for a long-distance domestic call. For mobile intra-EU calls, the price could not be more than €0.19 per minute (plus VAT). In setting prices, companies could recover objectively justified costs, but arbitrary profits from intra-EU calls would disappear.

Legal protection for open internet (net neutrality)

Blocking and throttling of internet content would be banned, giving users access to the full and open internet regardless of the cost or speed of their internet subscription. Companies still able to provide “specialized services” with assured quality (such as IPTV, video on demand, apps including high-resolution medical imaging, virtual operating theatres, and business-critical data-intensive cloud applications) so long as this did not interfere with the internet speeds promised to other customers. Consumers would have the right to check if they are receiving the internet speeds they pay for, and to walk away from their contract if those commitments are not met.

New consumer rights, with all rights harmonized across Europe

New rights such as the right to plain language contracts with more comparable information, greater rights to switch provider or contract, the right to a 12-month contract if you do not wish a longer contract, the right to walk away from your contract if promised internet speeds are not delivered, and the right to have emails forwarded to a new email address after switching internet provider.

Coordinated spectrum assignment

This will ensure Europeans get more 4G mobile access and Wi-Fi. Mobile operators will be able to develop more efficient and cross-border investment plans, thanks to stronger coordination of timing, duration and other conditions of assignment of spectrum. Member States would remain in charge, and continue to benefit from related fees from mobile operators, while operating within a more coherent framework. Such a framework will also expand the market for advanced telecoms equipment.

More certainty for investors

The Recommendation on Costing Methodologies and Non-Discrimination is the second element of this package, complementing the proposed regulation and intrinsically linked with it. It aims to increase certainty for investors, to increase their investment levels, and reduce divergences between regulators. This means 1) further harmonising and stablising costs that incumbent operators may charge for giving others access to their existing copper networks; and 2) ensuring that "access seekers" have truly equivalent access to networks. Where such competitive constraints and non-discrimination are ensured, the prices for wholesale access to "next generation" broadband would be determined by the market rather than regulators, meaning less red tape for operators.

AT&T: Preparing for LTE-Advanced

With LTE now the preferred radio technology in the majority of handsets it sells, AT&T is preparing its network for LTE-Advanced, said John Donovan, AT&T's Senior Executive Vice President of Technology & Network Operations, speaking at Bank of America Merrill Lynch 2013 Media, Communications and Entertainment Conference.  This means implementation for carrier aggregation for the company's 700 and 850 MHz spectrum, leveraging self-optimizing network (SON) capabilities, and enabling higher order MIMO at the towers and handsets.   Donovan said AT&T's goal is to extend the lead it has established at the fastest and most reliable network in the country. A specific timeline for the activation of LTE-Advanced was not given. LTE-Advanced smartphones will also be required.

Currently, AT&T has LTE coverage in 397 markets covering 240 million POPs across the U.S. Donovan said the network is performing at a high level thanks to its distributed core architecture, use of remote radio heads, and extensive implementation of Ethernet/Fiber backhaul. Approximately 90% of traffic currently flows over the Ethernet/Fiber backhaul.

Project VIP, which was launched a year ago, is on track, said Donovan, with 45 Mbps wireline broadband service now available in 17 states.  The fiber footprint expansion to SMBs is also on plan.  This new architecture is more CAPEX and OPEX efficient, which should deliver long term gains for the company.  Donovan also discussed how LTE could make sense as a fixed broadband service in areas where spectrum is available.  AT&T is looking at external antennas that could be mounted on the side of a home.  This would be a local play in areas where upgrading the copper network is not economically viable.

GENBAND Acquires fring -- an OTT Mobile Communications Service

GENBAND has acquired fring’s Over-the-Top (OTT) mobile IP communications service for consumers. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The fring app, which is available for both iOS and Android, provides free mobile group video chat, 2-way video chat, voice-only calls and text chat over IP.

GENBAND will offer a white label version that will let service providers and mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) compete with OTT solutions. fring reduces roaming costs for subscribers by moving voice and video sessions away from radio access networks and routing them over the Internet.

GENBAND said fring white-label solution for the consumer OTT market segment complements its NUViA white-label Unified Communications-as-a-Service (UCaaS) offering.

Gogo's Ground to Orbit Architecture Promises 60 Mbps to Aircraft

Gogo plans to deploy a proprietary, hybrid Ground-to-Orbit architecture by the second half of next year that would combines existing satellite technologies with Gogo's Air to Ground (ATG) cellular network.  The technology will use satellite for receive only (transmission to the plane) and Gogo's Air to Ground network for the return link (transmission to the ground).  Gogo will be utilizing a Ku antenna developed specifically for receive only functionality.

"When we launched our in-flight Internet service five years ago, we were able to deliver 3.1 Mbps per aircraft through our Air to Ground network.  About a year ago, we began rapidly deploying our next generation Air to Ground service that took peak speeds to 9.8 Mbps.  GTO will now take peak speeds to more than 60 Mbps. That's a 20-fold increase from where we started," stated Gogo's president and CEO, Michael Small.

Virgin America will be the launch partner of the new service, which is expected to be available in the second half of 2014.

Qualcomm Announces New $5.0 Billion Stock Repurchase Program

Qualcomm announced a new $5.0 billion stock repurchase program, replacing a similar $5.0 billion repurchase program launched in July underwhich the company has already repurchased approximately 40.1 million shares of common stock for approximately $2.7 billion.

Open Networking Foundation and ONUG Announce Partnership

The Open Networking Foundation (ONF) and the Open Networking User Group (ONUG) announced a partnership allowing input from ONUG’s end-user community to help shape the future of the SDN movement.

As part of this collaboration, ONF is supporting ONUG Fall 2013, a two-day event Oct. 29-30 in New York City. The event includes the ONUG Academy, a day of tutorials and workshops open to the industry, and the ONUG Conference, which will include user case studies, interactive business discussions, and networking opportunities for IT leaders. Rob Sherwood, chair of the ONF Architecture Framework Working Group, will present a tutorial on “Integrating OpenFlow and OpenStack” at the ONUG Academy.

Alcatel-Lucent Signs Ecuador's CNT for LTE

Ecuador's Corporacion Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (CNT) has selected Alcatel-Lucent to deploy the nation's first 4G LTE network in Ecuador.

The deployment will cover the cities of Guayaquil, Cuenca, Machala and Loja, as well as most of the major cities in Ecuador´s Pacific Coast and Southern area. The new network will provide download speeds of up to 100 Mbps and upload speeds of 40 Mbps, enabling CNT to offer enhanced fixed, mobile and convergent services, such as high definition video streaming to a wide range of customers in Ecuador.  Alcatel-Lucent will supply its 4G LTE base stations and the 5620 Service Aware Manager (5620 SAM). Agreement follows successful trial in Amazonas and Estadio areas of Quito conducted earlier this year by Alcatel-Lucent and CNT. Financial terms were not disclosed.
