Construction begins on Carnival Submarine Network-1

Telconet, the Ecuador-based infrastructure and telecom operator, has contracted Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) to begin construction of the Carnival Submarine Network-1 (CSN-1), a 4,500 km submarine cable the will link Ecuador, Panama, Colombia and the west coast of Florida, plus potentially other countries within Central and South America.

The submarine cable, which will adopt the industry’s Open Cable architecture, will utilize ASN’s high fiber count SDM Open-Cable technology solutions.

Carlos Pazmino, Telconet’s CSN-1 Project Leader shares his perspective on the project: “Getting to this point has meant a great effort for the ASN and TELCONET teams, the last one supported by DRG. We are sure the CSN-1 will become an excellent connectivity alternative and will be key in improving digitization not only in Ecuador but in countries of South and Central America, which have not yet benefitted as fully from new subsea communications infrastructure as other regions across the globe”.

Ecuador plans subsea cable to Galapagos with Xtera

Ecuador announced a 1,280 km submarine cable system to the Galapagos Islands. 

The cable, which is expected to be ready for service in 2022, will offer a full design capacity of 20 Tbps. The system will connect Manta-Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, in St. Cristobal; Port Ayora, in Santa Cruz and Port General Villamil in the Isabela Island, enabling the development of scientific research, commerce, tourism and education. 

Xtera will perform the design and construction works on a turnkey basis utilising their innovative SDM repeater, cable supplied by Prysmian/NSW and marine installation activities performed by IT International Telecom. Xtera’s innovative offering combines turnkey project management and system integration expertise with solid industry partnerships to deliver high capacity and flexible networks.

Nokia lands 5G contract in Ecuador

Ecuadorian mobile operator, Corporación Nacional de Telecommunicaciones (CNT), has selected Nokia for the extensive network modernization of existing LTE infrastructure as well as the installation of a 5G non standalone (NSA) network. Deployment is underway.

The project encloses the modernization of existing 3G/LTE infrastructure in the provinces of Guayas, Los Rios, Manabi, Bolivar, Morona Santiago and Santa Elena, already implementing over 500 sites for a seamless migration to 5G services. Nokia will also deploy the first 5G non standalone (NSA) sites which will operate in the cities of Guayaquil and Manta. These first 5G sites will enable CNT to plan the services they want to launch with 5G.

The deal comprises Nokia equipment from its comprehensive AirScale portfolio, that will enable CNT to deliver market-leading 5G experiences to subscribers with ultra-low latency, connectivity and capacity as well as reducing complexity and increasing cost efficiencies. Nokia is also supplying its massive MIMO Adaptive Antenna and Micro Remote Radio Head (RRH) solutions to meet the demand for capacity and reliable coverage. CNT also deployed the Nokia AirFrame data center solution to support cloud-based applications necessary for future telco and IT networking.

Alcatel-Lucent Signs Ecuador's CNT for LTE

Ecuador's Corporacion Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (CNT) has selected Alcatel-Lucent to deploy the nation's first 4G LTE network in Ecuador.

The deployment will cover the cities of Guayaquil, Cuenca, Machala and Loja, as well as most of the major cities in Ecuador´s Pacific Coast and Southern area. The new network will provide download speeds of up to 100 Mbps and upload speeds of 40 Mbps, enabling CNT to offer enhanced fixed, mobile and convergent services, such as high definition video streaming to a wide range of customers in Ecuador.  Alcatel-Lucent will supply its 4G LTE base stations and the 5620 Service Aware Manager (5620 SAM). Agreement follows successful trial in Amazonas and Estadio areas of Quito conducted earlier this year by Alcatel-Lucent and CNT. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Alcatel-Lucent Selected for 100G Pacific Caribbean Cable System

Alcatel-Lucent has been selected to deploy a new 100G submarine cable system linking Jacksonville, Florida to Manta, Ecuador.

The Pacific Caribbean Cable System (PCCS) will be a 6,000 km submarine cable system owned by Cable & Wireless Communications, Setar, Telconet, Telefónica a Global Solutions and United Telecommunication Services (UTS).

In addition to Florida and Ecuador, the system will connect the islands of Tortola, Puerto Rico, Aruba and Curacao, as well as Cartagena in Colombia and Maria Chiquita and Balboa in Panama.

The system will have an ultimate design capacity of 80 Terabit-per-second. Alcatel-Lucent will supply an integrated 100G wet plant of cable optimized with coherent submarine fiber and high bandwidth repeaters, power feed equipment, and its 1620 Light Manager (LM) submarine line terminal equipped with advanced coherent technology.

Commercial activation is expected by the third quarter of 2014.
