Napatech to showcase 5G UPF Offload with AMD and Advantech

Napatech will showcase its SmartNIC-based offload solution for 5G User Plane Function (UPF) in collaboration with AMD and Advantech at next week's MWC Americas in Las Vegas.

Unlike in most 4G networks based on purpose-built appliances, the 5G packet core is implemented as virtualized or cloud-native software running on servers located within edge and core data centers. As Communications Service Providers (CSPs) and enterprises scale up the deployments of their 5G networks, they face strong financial pressure to maximize the number of users that can be supported on each server, whether individual subscribers or IoT devices, thereby minimizing the net cost-per-user.

Within 5G packet core software, the subsystem that represents the highest compute workload is the User Plane Function (UPF), which performs critical packet inspection, routing and forwarding functions associated with connecting user and device traffic from the Radio Access Network (RAN) to the Data Network (DN). Since general-purpose server CPUs are not well suited to the performance and latency requirements of real-time packet processing, network operators and 5G core software vendors increasingly adopt solutions for offloading the UPF to accelerator cards which are optimized for executing such workloads.

Napatech addresses the key business challenges around packet core deployments through its new, integrated hardware/software solution that leverages an AMD Xilinx Virtex field programmable gate array (FPGA) to deliver industry-leading UPF performance. The solution comprises a fully-offloaded UPF fast path implemented within Napatech’s Link-Inline software stack, running on an NT200 programmable PCI-Express (PCIe) SmartNIC based on an AMD Virtex UltraScale+ VU9P FPGA. The UPF data path is implemented as a port-to-port inline or “hairpinned” architecture, which ensures that following initial setup all flows are processed on the SmartNIC with no need to pass traffic to and from the server CPU, maximizing the overall performance of the system.

Using a single 200Gbps NT200 SmartNIC to sustain 100Gbps of full duplex traffic, the Napatech UPF Offload solution processes up to 140 million concurrent flows, with a flow learning rate greater than 1.5 million flows per second, achieving a total throughput of up to 85 million packets per second on stateful connections and ensuring full wire speed operation for typical packet sizes. In a representative use case analyzed by the company, the Napatech UPF offload solution enables network operators to support 75x more users per server than with a software-based UPF and 7x more users per server than with a competing ASIC-based SmartNIC.

Napatech tunes its SmartNIC Traffic Classification for cybersecurity

Napatech announced a new set of capabilities for its FPGA-based SmartNICs designed to address escalating trends in cybercrime.

The latest upgrade to Napatech’s Link-Inline software enables its programmable SmartNICs to address emerging cybercrime threats through important innovations in network traffic classification and identification. Through standard APIs, security applications specify and update the processing actions to be performed by the SmartNIC, on a per-flow basis. These actions are subsequently performed entirely on the SmartNIC for known flows, freeing up the host CPU to run value-added applications and services.

The Link-Inline software is available now on Napatech SmartNICs that support port configurations including 1, 10, 25, 40 and 100 Gigabit Ethernet. These security functions achieve 200Gbps throughput on standard servers, supporting the high bandwidth requirements of cloud, enterprise and carrier networks.

To identify and mitigate threats from malicious network traffic, the SmartNICs perform ingress flow classification and identification without host CPU intervention for known flows, based either on policies or on actions dynamically assigned by the security application. Additionally, stateful flow handling in hardware leverages flow-based actions to perform analytics and prevent security exploits.

"The security industry is seeing a trend towards more complex, multi-staged attacks that involve multiple threat types,” said Napatech CMO Jarrod J.S. Siket. “Addressing this emerging threat landscape requires sophisticated security solutions such as the Napatech Link-Inline software running on our high-performance programmable SmartNICs.”

Column: The promises of NFV within reach

by Daniel Proch, vice president of Product Management, Napatech

With so many new technologies vying for attention, it can be difficult for CISOs to know which ones merit attention. Will this solution save time? Will it make our organization more productive, or enable us to do things we couldn’t otherwise do? These questions need to be considered before adopting Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV).

What makes these technologies appealing is their ability to separate software from hardware, which eschews the vendor lock-in that has been the norm. So then, the main question is not about budget but about an organization’s ability to overcome the challenges of these methods so organizations can realize their full value.

At the time enterprises, mobile operators and data centers began building their own network infrastructure, they used the typical customized hardware and software offered on the market. Example applications include network gateways, switches, routers, network load balancers, varied mobile applications in the mobile core; radio access network such as vEPC (virtual evolved packet core), vCPE (virtual customer premise equipment) and vRAN (virtual Radio Access Network); and security applications like firewalls, NGFW, IDS/IPS, SSL/IPsec offload appliances, DLP and antivirus applications, to name just a few.

Instead of needing to purchase proprietary appliances to run each networking application, it is much more cost-efficient to support these functions as software applications, called virtualized network functions (VNFs), running on virtual machines or in containers on standard servers. That’s the idea behind NFV. Moving away from discrete, cus¬tomized architectures to a more consolidated “x86-only architecture” promises to reduce costs, simplify deployment and management of net¬working infrastructure, widen supplier choice and, ultimately, enable horizontal scale-out in the networking and security market.

It’s not a sure bet that the throughput and latency demands that today’s applications require can be handled by applications in software on standard platforms without allotting significant CPU resources to address the issue. Operators are realizing that the cost savings that NFV promises are offset by the need to deploy entire racks of compute resources at a problem that a single appliance could previously support. The CPU and server costs, rack space and power required to meet the same performance footprint of a dedicated solution end up being as expensive as or more than custom-designed alternatives. The vision of operational simplicity and dramatically lower total cost of ownership are still a dream on the horizon.

Aaaand…Along Comes 5G

As if the performance and scaling problems that operators face with generic NFV infrastructure (NFVi) weren’t enough to worry about, the presence of 5G networks will make these concerns worse. The move to 5G brings new requirements to mobile networks, creating its own version of hyperscale networking that is needed to meet the performance goals for the technology, but at the right economy of scale. Numerous factors are fundamentally unique to 5G networks when compared to previous 3G/4G instantiations of mobile protocols. The shorter the distance, the higher the frequency – thus, the more bandwidth that can be driven over the wireless network.

But wait – it gets worse. 5G will also mean a huge increase in the number of users/devices (both human and IoT), which fundamentally affects the number of unique flows in the network and necessitates very low latency requirements. 5G also promises lower energy and cost than previous mobile technologies. These 5G goals, when realized, will drive the application of wireless communications to completely new areas never seen before.

Rapid Scaling

If they are going to meet performance goals, network operators now see that they will need data plane acceleration based on FPGA-based SmartNICs in order to scale virtualized networking functions (VNFs). This technique offloads the x86 processors that are hosting the varied VNFs to support the breadth of services promised.

When SmartNIC acceleration supports virtual switching, this set-up has been shown to be the highest-performing and most secure method of deploying VNFs. Virtual machines (VMs) can use accelerated packet I/O and guaranteed traffic isolation via hardware while maintaining vSwitch functionality. FPGA-based SmartNICs specialize in the match/action processing required for vSwitches and can offload critical security processing, freeing up CPU resources for VNF applications.

Functions like filtering, intelligent load balancing, virtual switching, flow classification and encryption/decryption can all be performed in the SmartNIC and offloaded from the x86 processor housing the VNFs while, through technologies like VirtIO, be transparent to the VNF, providing a common management and orchestration layer to the network fabric.

A Novel Configuration

Network infrastructure has changed so dramatically and so much more is being asked of it that
organizations cannot operate with networking and security solutions that are expensive, hardened and fixed-function. The technique to overcome the challenges that are facing NFV deployments requires reconfigurable computing platforms based on standard servers capable of offloading and accelerating compute-intensive workloads, either in an inline or look-aside model to appropriately distribute workloads between x86 general-purpose processors and software-reconfigurable, FPGA-based SmartNICs optimized for virtualized environments.

The environment that results from combining low-cost server platforms and FPGA-based SmartNICs is one that enables huge throughput and support for many millions of simultaneous flows. CISOs that have struggled to implement NFV now have the option to use this novel framework, with the capabilities and the speed they need.

Blueprint: Operationalizing NFV in the Face of 100G

by Dan Joe Barry, VP Positioning and Chief Evangelist, Napatech

A recent survey on the future of network appliances indicates that 100G will be the dominant speed rate in core, metro and access in 2018. How can we ensure that NFV is ready for this challenge?

Great strides have been made over the last three years in proving the viability of Network Functions Virtualization (NFV). Dozens of Proof of Concept (PoC) trials have proven that workloads can be migrated to virtual environments running on standard hardware, and there are even examples of carrier deployments using NFV. This is all thanks to the work of visionary carriers and vendors who recognize the need for a drastic change in how carriers do business if they are to survive and thrive in the future.

Thanks to this effort, the issue is no longer whether NFV will work; the issue is how we can make NFV work effectively so it will deliver on its promise. The issue is no longer whether a service can be deployed using NFV, but whether we can manage and secure that service in an NFV environment. In other words, the challenge now is to operationalize NFV.

Managing and securing services requires network appliances that can monitor and analyze network behavior. A recent survey by Heavy Reading on behalf of Napatech provides insight into how network appliances are being used today, progress on migrating network appliances to virtual environments and insight into the challenges that need to be addressed to ensure the success of this migration.

In “The Future of Network Appliances,” 47 percent of respondents considered network appliances for network management and security as essential, while a further 39 percent considered them valuable, reflecting a broad appreciation for the operational value of appliances. Survey responses also show that network management and security appliances are broadly deployed, especially for applications like network and application performance monitoring, test and measurement as well as firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention, and data loss prevention.

Nevertheless, the survey also showed progress in migrating network appliances to virtual environments, especially for the most widely deployed applications. 73 percent of carriers indicated that they intend to deploy virtualized appliances over the next two years. Network equipment vendors are responding, with 71 percent indicating that they intend to deliver virtualized appliances in the same time frame.

The top three challenges that respondents could see in delivering and deploying virtualized appliances were interworking with other vendor solutions (81 percent concerned or extremely concerned), security (79 percent) and throughput (80 percent).

But the most eye-opening challenge that the survey highlighted must be the extensive deployment of 100G network data rates in not just the core but also the metro and, most surprisingly of all, the access network. Survey respondents were asked to indicate the most common planned data rate for the core, metro and access networks in 2018. The responses showed that 75 percent of respondents planned for 100G as their most common data rate in the core and 71 percent planned to use 100G in the metro, while 58 percent planned to use 100G in the access network.

This will potentially prove to be the greatest challenge in virtualizing network appliances over the next three years. The first 100G physical network appliances are just now being introduced to the market. They are based on standard servers, as the majority of physical network appliances are today. However, they rely on high-performance network interface cards capable of providing the throughput required at these data rates.

Standard Network Interface Cards (NICs) cannot provide the performance required for these kinds of applications even at data rates of 10G. Recent benchmark testing of NFV solutions which are based on standard NICs have shown that there are serious performance challenges in using these kinds of products for high-speed applications even when using Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK) acceleration. Solutions based on bypassing hypervisors, such as Single-Root Input/Output Virtualization (SR-IOV), provide some relief, but come at the expense of virtual function mobility and flexibility.

Network management and security solutions are essential to the successful operation of virtualized networks and will need to be able to operate at 100G data rates within the next three years. One should therefore expect a reassessment of the need for alternative NIC solutions in NFV deployments. These need not be focused solely on network management and security virtualized applications, as the performance issues faced by these applications are similar to those that will be faced by other virtual appliances at high data rates. This technical challenge has already been solved in the physical world. Now it is merely a question of migrating these solutions to the virtualized environment to make sure that NFV is not only deployable but also operational, even at speeds of 100G.

Napatech: 100G Rollouts Will Drive Market for Network Appliances

By 2018, a steep rise in the penetration of 100G networks will drive the need for a new generation of accelerated, virtual network appliances.

A custom study conducted by Heavy Reading on behalf of Napatech has found that the traditional hardware appliance market has reached maturity and will be extended with 100G solutions and then, over time, replaced with virtualized appliances.  The study surveyed over 135 qualified service providers and vendors.  Here are some key findings:

Network appliances are undergoing a fundamental transition: Two drivers are responsible for this transition -- increased transport network throughput and the impact of virtualization.

100G transport networks to increase dramatically:
Increases in data network throughput are happening at all levels due to the deployment of 100G. The survey forecasts that the 100G transport network penetration will grow significantly by the end of 2018:

  • From 22 to 75 percent increase in core transport networks
  • From 14 percent to 71 percent penetration in metro networks
  • Nine percent penetration to 58 percent growth in access networks

Profound impact of SDN/NFV expected: The impact of SDN and NFV on network appliances will be profound but positive overall. With virtualized network appliance growth on the rise, both NEPs and CSPs see a continued need for network appliances in a 100G virtualized world.

“As data growth continues to accelerate, increases in data network throughput are occurring at all levels due to the deployment of 100G. We are committed to delivering solutions that assist our customers in analyzing data at maximum throughput without compromise. This report is a strong indicator that our best-of-breed accelerators are poised to provide our customers with the tools they need to meet the demands of today’s high-speed, physical and virtual network environments,” stated Henrik Brill Jensen, CEO, Napatech.

Cyber adAPT Teams with Napatech on Threat Detection

Cyber adAPT and Napatech  announced an integrated product solution for accelerated threat detection in high-speed networks.

Cyber adAPT is a non-signature based, agentless detection product that scans packets on the wire in real time, looking for and alerting on malicious network behavior already present inside the perimeter. It provides behavior detection capabilities at line speed with the precision required to avoid the all-too-common false alarms. Napatech specializes in accelerating network management and security applications.

By deeply integrating a 4 port 1 Gbps Napatech network accelerator into the solution, the entry level Cyber adAPT deployment is enhanced and enables the product to deliver high-speed processing of very large amounts of traffic by managing data flows at line speed with zero packet loss, allowing for true "real-time" analysis.

“Cyber adAPT products that include Napatech acceleration guarantees delivery of data to our probe under all conditions. Full line-rate packet capture with zero packet loss, frame buffering and optimal configuration of host buffer sizes remove the bottlenecks that can cause packet loss to reliably deliver the critical analysis data that Cyber adAPT security solutions demand,” stated Scott Millis, chief technology officer, Cyber adAPT.

“Staying ahead of the data growth curve often requires a combined solution and very often cannot be provided by only one company. We are proud to enhance the Cyber adAPT solution with our core accelerator technology to provide them with the high-speed processing they need to manage data flows at line speed. It is through the integration process that we are able to address the needs of today’s overtaxed network infrastructure,” said Peter Ekner, chief technology officer, Napatech.

Napatech Video: Conquer the Time-to-Market Challenge

The volume, variety and velocity of data in IT and telecom networks is increasing at explosive rates. Staying ahead of this data growth curve is a challenge, not only for switch and router vendors, but also the vendors of appliances that assure that the networks we are all rely upon are available and secure. Appliance vendors need to stay ahead of the curve in more ways than one. Not only do they need to ensure that they are capable of continuously increasing the capacity and performance of their products, but they also need to shorten the development cycle and time-to-market. Presented by Napatech.

Napatech Debuts 2x100 Gbps Packet Analyzer

Napatech introduced a 2x100 Gbps throughput network analysis solution on PCIe boards and aimed at network operators needed to understand their network traffic at the highest levels.

The Napatech 200G performance solution offer full, non-blocking packet capture and analysis with zero packet loss and low CPU load. To achieve 200 Gbps performance, Napatech combines two of its PCI-SIG® compliant NT100E3-1-PTP accelerators using a unique intelligent hardware interconnect .  The company said this approach ensures the efficient exchange of data and guaranteed performance even when monitoring 200G of traffic. The 200G solution is delivered as a pre-configured product. However, customers that have an earlier release of the NT100E3-1-PTP will be able to upgrade the firmware to take advantage of these features. Future upgrades include advanced de-duplication and slicing, additional filtering capabilities, broader protocol support, the ability to define flows and configure flow recognition based on any header information as well as full IP reassembly support.

Some highlights:

  • Capability to match the delivery capacity of the available PCIe Gen3 interface
  • Each 100G accelerator maps to a single NUMA node, ensuring local cache access to data
  • The Intelligent Hardware Interconnect ensures that data from either port can be directed to the correct NUMA node with full control and guaranteed performance
  • Ability to monitor downstream and upstream traffic in both SPAN and TAP environments
  • Available in 1G to 100G with the same intelligent processing capabilities accessed through a single common API provided by the Napatech Software Suite

“Addressing the data growth challenges are critical to understanding what services or apps subscribers are using, but moreover when and where they are using them. By analyzing this information in real time, operators and service providers can tailor their solutions and offer new services. As a major provider to network appliance manufacturers around the world, our R&D teams have a unique advantage over our competitors in developing solutions that help our customers stay ahead of the data growth curve," stated Henrik Brill Jensen, CEO, Napatech.
