Megaport and Zenlayer enter alliance

Megaport and Zenlayer, a leading global edge cloud services provider, entered into a strategic partnership to expand the global reach of their networks to more than 800 locations across six continents to their joint customers. The combined footprint covers 800+ data centers.

Customers of Megaport and Zenlayer can now also take advantage of the companies’ full suite of enterprise services including Megaport Cloud Router, a virtual cloud routing service, Megaport Virtual Edge, a NFV hosting service that improves SD-WAN connectivity, Zenlayer’s Bare Metal Cloud, an on-demand edge compute service, and Zenlayer Global Accelerator (ZGA), a point-and-click service to instantly accelerate applications globally.

Megaport names Jim Brinksma as CTO

Megaport named Jim Brinksma asChief Technology Officer. 

Most recently, Brinksma was the Co-founder and CTO of InnovoEdge, which was acquired by Megaport in 2021. Prior to joining Megaport, Jim held technology leadership roles at Ciena BluePlanet and Goldman Sachs. He also served more than seven years in the United States Navy and has a doctorate from University of Maryland.

Megaport expands to Mexico via KIO Networks

Megaport plans to expand services to Mexico via a partnership with KIO Networks, the country’s largest data centre provider. Cloud connectivity services to Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud are expected to be available in March 2022 to local enterprises via on-ramps from KIO Networks’ data centres in Mexico City and Queretaro, subject to approvals.

KIO Networks has 40 state-of-the-art data centres across Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, Dominican Republic, and Spain, as well as 11 edge facilities in Mexico. The company has over 20 megawatts of installed operational capacity.

Megaport launches VMware SD-WAN

Megaport is now offering VMware SD-WAN on Megaport Virtual Edge (MVE) to enable branch-to-cloud connectivity on Megaport’s global SDN.

With VMware SD-WAN available on MVE, customers can host localised virtual SD-WAN controllers on Megaport’s global platform and reduce the distance data traverses over internet paths from branch locations to critical services in public or private clouds and even other branch locations.

Once connected, VMware customers can access Megaport’s leading ecosystem of more than 700 enabled data centres worldwide and over 360 service providers, including 220+ cloud on-ramps from the world's leading clouds such as Alibaba Cloud, AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, IBM Cloud, Oracle Cloud, and Salesforce.

Megaport offers Aruba EdgeConnect SD-WAN

Megaport is now offering the Aruba EdgeConnect SD-WAN Platform on Megaport Virtual Edge (MVE) for enabling  branch-to-cloud connectivity via Megaport’s global SDN.

Aruba EdgeConnect customers can now leverage Megaport’s worldwide ecosystem of more than 700 data centres and over 360 service providers, with 230+ cloud on-ramps including Alibaba Cloud, AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, IBM Cloud, Oracle Cloud, and Salesforce. 

MVE is a globally distributed compute and network service, and customers can host Network Function Virtualisation instances on-demand at the point of use, managing them globally from a single pane of glass. A built-in transit gateway provides highly scalable access for connecting networks, via the public internet, to Megaport’s private SDN. Virtualized devices hosted on MVE can create connections between the Megaport SDN and their distributed sites via the transit gateway.

NTT Ltd. adds Megaport POP in Hong Kong

NTT Ltd. is now hosting a Megaport Point of Presence (PoP) at its Tai Po Data Center in Hong Kong.

The new Megaport PoP at NTT Ltd.’s Tai Po Data Center is an expansion from the existing PoP at the company’s Financial Data Center in Hong Kong. Megaport Virtual Edge leverages SD-WAN

Megaport introduced a Virtual Edge service that enables the hosting of Network Function Virtualization (NFV), such as SD-WAN capabilities, directly on the Megaport global Software Defined Network (SDN).

The Megaport Virtual Edge (MVE) allows customers will tap into Megaport’s extensive platform reach to deploy and extend their network functions closer to the edge, in real time, and without the need to deploy hardware. MVE includes gateway functionality to connect with Megaport’s SDN in a platform-neutral and technology-agnostic manner. Once connected, SD-WAN enabled locations can provision on demand connections to Megaport’s ecosystem of cloud, IT service providers, and more than 700 enabled data centers.

Cisco SD-WAN is the first use case on MVE.

Megaport's SDN now extends to Google Cloud's global network

Megaport has added support for Google Cloud's Partner Interconnect, a service from Google Cloud that allows customers to privately connect to Google Cloud Platform.

Google Cloud's Partner Interconnect is a new product in the Google Cloud Interconnect family. Last September, Google announced Dedicated Interconnect, which provides higher-speed and lower-cost connectivity than VPN, and has become the go-to solution to connect on-premises data centres with the cloud.

Megaport said it is now providing connectivity to the nearest Google edge Point of Presence at a variety of sub-rate interface speeds varying from 50 Mbps to 10 Gbps.

"Partner Interconnect gives Google Cloud customers even more connectivity choices for hybrid environments," said, John Veizades, Product Manager, Google Cloud. "Together with Megaport, we are making it easier for customers to extend their on-prem infrastructure to the Google Cloud Platform."

Megaport’s global SDN now available in RagingWire data centers

Megaport’s global Software Defined Network (SDN) is now available via RagingWire’s Cloud Connect portfolio of solution partners.

Megaport, a leading Network as a Service (NaaS) provider, operates a global SDN with over 200 data center Points of Presence (PoPs), enabling on-demand, elastic interconnection to clouds, networks, enterprises, and managed services.

RagingWire’s data center customers will now be to access Megaport’s web-based portal to provision network services in seconds, rather than weeks, and scale bandwidth instantly to increase and decrease capacity as needed. Customers can also take advantage of Megaport Cloud Router (MCR) to create high-performance multi-cloud solutions without the need for their own infrastructure PoP.

Megaport adds direct connectivity to Salesforce

Megaport launched its elastic interconnection service for direct, scalable connectivity to the Salesforce Platform.

The connectivity to Salesforce is available in two markets from North America (San Jos and Ashburn) and one market from EMEA (Frankfurt). Additional data centers are in the planning phases for 2018. Megaport users will be able to provision private, secure, and direct connections to the Salesforce Platform services from 185+ Megaport enabled data centres.

As a Salesforce Express Connect Partner, Megaport can boost performance, increase application reliability, as well as help meet industry regulatory and compliance demands by establishing a direct, private connection to the Salesforce infrastructure through its global SDN.

Chasing the next virtual network opportunity

For tennis fans, all attention is currently on the city of Melbourne, where the final rounds of the Australia Open are underway. For those interested in the future of cloud connectivity, the focus goes to the city of Brisbane, where an Australian upstart is making a name for itself in the emerging Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) category. Potential users of NaaS could include large multinational, governments, other cloud providers. service providers including mobile network operators, and mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs). We expect to see many mobile operators transition to virtual networks over time and this could be one model.

Founded in 2013, Brisbane-based Megaport has built what it considers to be the world's first SDN interconnection fabric linking enterprises with equipment in colocation data centres to leading cloud service providers.

Megaport says its elastic fabric is "the reason cloud connectivity will scale." The company developed and runs its own proprietary software stack for automating virtual connections across the fabric. It offers APIs that would enable customers to automate connections across its service. Megaport owns and operates its own core network infrastructure, including fibre and transport for each market and between inter-city data centres. This footprint now covers major cities in Australia, Asia Pacific, North America, and Europe – a total of 37 major markets in 19 countries. Unlike with best-effort public Internet access, Megaport is able to provide strict SLAs because it controls the transport network and the switching fabric, and the Layer 2 access inside the colo data centre.

The ASX publicly-listed company has reported steady revenue growth over the past year as it quickly scales its service. For its fiscal quarter ending 31-December-2017, revenue was A$4.68 million, up 12.7% sequentially. The total number of customer ports increased in the quarter to 2,259, up 9% sequentially.

From Virtual Layer 2 to Virtual Layer 3

Just this week, Megaport is unveiling a virtual router service that enables customers to rapidly and privately connect at Layer 3 without the need to own or manage routers or physical infrastructure.  The Megaport Cloud Router (MCR), which rides the company’s same physical network, aims to make it easier for companies to expand their service footprint through virtual Points of Presence (PoPs), and peer with ecosystem partners worldwide. It does so by removing the need to own physical routers or network infrastructure. Megaport said its service also enables cloud to cloud connectivity. Customers can use its cloud router to move workloads and data between Cloud Service Provider (CSP) environments.  Customers can create virtual routers within routing zones around the world to enable global coverage and support localized routing decisions. In addition, networks service providers connect to Megaport can use MCR to set up virtual PoPs around the world.

Company leadership

Megaport was founded by Bevan Slattery, who currently serves as Chairman of the business. Over his career, Slattery built multiple successful Australian IT and telecommunications companies including Superloop and NextDC.  He also co-founded PIPE Networks which grew to become Australia’s largest Internet Exchange and Australia’s third largest metropolitan fibre network provider, selling to TPG in May 2010.

Megaport is headed by Vincent English, who previously was Chief Financial Officer for Digicel Group. Prior to joining Megaport, Vincent was for Digicel Group, the global mobile network operator active in  31 markets in the Caribbean and South Pacific.  Megaport’s engineering team is led by Tim Hoffman (CTO), who previously led the Global Network team at Twitter, responsible for worldwide infrastructure, including all interconnection, backbone and content distribution infrastructure, and global data centres.  In this role, Hoffman negotiated peering agreements with some of the largest Internet backbone providers. Eric Troyer serves Megaport's Chief Marketing Officer. Troyer previously was Director of Network Edge and Interconnection Strategy at Microsoft where he led planning and engineering teams tasked with network expansion and IP capacity acquisition to scale Microsoft’s cloud strategy. Working at Equinix, he drove the Equinix Internet Exchange product

Building the Ecosystem

Customers connect to its fabric via a single, physical "mega-port" at any of the 185 colo data centres in which is present. This physical port enables the set-up and tear-down of virtual ports to any of the other parties connected to the global Megaport network. The concept is simple. Once a sufficient number of parties are on-board, Megaport benefits from the "n-squared" magic of networks. The company is now poised to enter that rapid growth phase.

Megaport has been prolific in forming partnerships with key players for cloud. These can be sorted into the following categories:
  • Cloud Service Providers: Alibaba, AWS, Microsoft, Google Cloud, Oracle Cloud
  • Data Centre Operators: now present in 185 data centres worldwide, including those of CyrusOne, Digital Realty, EdgeConnex, 4 Degree Data Centres, IO, Cyxtera, vXchnge, QTS, FORTRUST, Stream Data Centers 
  • Network and Managed Service Providers: Aqua Comms, Cloudlogix, GT, Seaborn Networks, Rackspace

In the last category of network service providers, we see two subsea cable operators. This is interesting because it means that enterprises attached to the Megaport fabric now have the ability to activate transoceanic capacity on a short-term basis and via a simple web portal. The partnership with Aqua Comms, which was announced in November 2016, allows customers to turn on elastic interconnectivity services to Aqua Comms’ transatlantic subsea network between New York, Dublin, and London.  Consumption is be based on cloud computing models, including month-to-month services – a huge gain in provisioning flexibility compared with the old system of negotiating 20-year contracts (IRUs).

In its home country of Australia, which is probably its most developed market, Megaport is already providing a similar capability to the U.S.  Dedicated capacity between Sydney and Los Angeles now enables its enterprise customers in Australia and New Zealand to connect to multi-national cloud nodes in North America.

Megaport Cloud Router deliver L3 connectivity

Megaport introduced a virtual router service that enables customers to rapidly and privately connect at Layer 3 without the need to own or manage routers or physical infrastructure.

The Megaport Cloud Router (MCR) aims to make it easier for companies to connect to cloud services, expand their service footprint through virtual Points of Presence (PoPs), and peer with ecosystem partners worldwide. It does so by removing the need to own physical routers or network infrastructure and by reducing administrative complexities.

Megaport said its service also enables cloud to cloud connectivity. Customers can use its cloud router to move workloads and data between Cloud Service Provider (CSP) environments. Notably, Megaport is an Alibaba Cloud Technology Partner, Oracle Cloud Partner, AWS Technology Partner, Microsoft Azure ExpressRoute Partner, Google Cloud Interconnect Partner, and IBM Direct Link Cloud Exchange provider.

Megaport, which provides SDN-based Elastic Interconnect Services, has begun offering direct, secure connectivity to IBM Cloud from any of the 179 data centres globally where it is present.

The service is intended to function as a data centre and service provider neutral, self-serve marketplace enabling enterprises to access business critical services on demand.

Italy-based Enter partners with Megaport

Enter, a provider of network and cloud services based in Italy, announced a partnership with Megaport (USA), a subsidiary of Australia-based Megaport. a provider of software defined networking (SDN), to enable near-instant access to its Enter Cloud Suite (ECS) and services ecosystem via Megaport's global interconnection network.

Through the agreement, enterprise and carrier customers connected to the Megaport network in Amsterdam and other Megaport-enabled locations worldwide can directly connect to Enter's cloud platform.

Enter Cloud Suite is claimed to be the first European OpenStack-based cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) solution. ECS enables orchestration of servers, storage, networks, DNS and CDN via a graphical interface or API. The scalable solution can be delivered autonomously or as a fully managed, turnkey solution featuring design, set-up, migration and ongoing maintenance and support. Enter Cloud Suite serves as the cloud platform of 52 European institutions, including the European Parliament and Court of Justice.

The OpenStack-based Enter Cloud Suite was launched in 2012 and is available in Milan, Frankfurt and Amsterdam. Enter delivers connectivity, data centre and Internet solutions in Europe, the U.S. and Asia Pacific leveraging its IP backbone that spans key PoPs across Europe, as well as New York and Hong Kong.

Megaport Teams with Seaborn Cable for South America Coverage

Megaport announced a strategic agreement with Seaborn Networks, which is developing the Seabras-1 cable system, to enable elastic, subsea connectivity services via an online portal to South America.

Seaborn will have its own portal and provisioning platform in line with the existing services that Megaport currently offers. This will enable Seaborn customers to access any of Megaport's 140+ enabled data centres, and also to order from a portal that leverages three years of Megaport's technology and will have continued management and support from Megaport.

Under the alliance, Seaborn will also have exclusive rights to deploy Megaport-enabled broadband on demand solutions inside of South America and for international connectivity to and from South America. This will be the first third party operated Megaport PoP in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Megaport Enables Singapore - Hong Kong - Los Angeles Route

Megaport announced a new route connecting Hong Kong to Los Angeles and a secondary path from Singapore to Hong Kong to meet high customer demand. As with all Megaport enabled infrastructure, consumption will be based on cloud computing models, including month-to-month services.

The connectivity provides enterprise customers with access trans-pacific capacity via Megaport’s global Software Defined Network, enabling customers to link services including cloud connections, Point to Points, and remote peering between Hong Kong, Singapore, and the U.S., without requiring a physical presence in all locations. Customers can directly connect to Amazon Web Services, Google, Microsoft Azure, and more cloud service providers through Megaport
partnerships.

Megaport Signs Bulgaria's Sofia Connect

Megaport, which operates a global Software Defined Network that helps customers to rapidly connect to other services and data centres across the world, announced that Omnix Group EAD, whom it acquired earlier this year, has entered into a strategic partnership with Sofia Connect EOOD ("Sofia Connect"), a leading wholesale carrier with headquarters in Bulgaria acting as a gateway provider, linking carriers from the Balkans, Caucasus region, and the Middle East to Western Internet hubs.

The partnership enables Sofia Connect to sell Megaport's SDN services to their extensive customer base across their vast European network. Megaport pioneered the first platform that allows companies to instantly manage their connectivity from anywhere, on any device. Digital Realty Launches Cloud Service Exchange

Digital Realty is launching Service Exchange, an interconnection platform that facilitates direct, private and secure connections from clients in its data center to multiple cloud service providers – including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure – as well as telecommunications providers and other Digital Realty customers worldwide.


The new Service Exchange, which is powered y Megaport, provides the elastic, SDN-based Ethernet fabric that enables interconnection between cloud providers and Digital Realty customers. An online portal will enable Digital Realty customers to actively manage multiple virtual private connections ("Virtual Cross Connects") to cloud operators and service providers.

Digital Realty said its new Service Exchange will be available in 24 data centers across 15 markets by mid-year 2017, beginning with Atlanta , Chicago , Dallas , Los Angeles , New York , San Francisco , Seattle and Ashburn, VA in the fourth quarter of 2016. Service Exchange will be available in London and Phoenix in the first quarter of 2017, and in Amsterdam , Dublin , Miami , Singapore and Portland in the second quarter of 2017.

Digital Realty to Acquire Telx for Data Centers and Internet Exchanges

Digital Realty Trust agreed to acquire Telx, a national provider of data center colocation, interconnection and cloud enablement solutions, for $1.886 billion from private equity firms ABRY Partners and Berkshire Partners.

The combination is expected to double Digital Realty's footprint in the rapidly-growing colocation business, as well as provide Digital Realty customers access to a leading interconnection platform.

As of March 31, 2015, Telx managed 1.3 million square feet of data center space operating out of 20 facilities across the country, of which two are Telx-owned, 11 are leased from Digital Realty, one is partially sub-leased from Digital Realty and an unrelated third party, and six are leased from third parties. Telx's flagship facilities include its NYC1 data center at 60 Hudson Street in Manhattan, which serves as a nerve center for international communications and offers access to physical connection points to the world’s telecommunications networks and Internet backbones. Telx occupies multiple floors at 60 Hudson with interconnectivity to more than 400 carriers, financial exchanges and application, media, content, and software-as-a-service providers with just a single connection. Telx operates other NYC data centers at 111 8th Ave. and 32 Avenue of the Americas (6th Ave).

As of March 31, 2015, Digital Realty's portfolio consisted of 130 properties, including 14 properties held as investments in unconsolidated joint ventures, comprised of approximately 22.1 million square feet, excluding approximately 1.2 million square feet of space under active development and 1.3 million square feet of space held for future development, located throughout North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.
