GlobeNet's Malbec Subsea Cable links Rio and Buenos Aires

GlobeNet is in the final stages of the construction of its new Malbec subsea cable system, which will link the Brazilian cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo with Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The 2,500 km Malbec cable will be fully integrated into GlobeNet's regional network, offering seamless connectivity between the Southern Cone and the rest of the GlobeNet's network to Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Bermuda and the United States.

The Malbec system will use Spatial Division Multiplexing (SDM) and the latest generation in repeaters and transponders.  The system is expected to be ready for service in July.

GlobeNet and Facebook build 2,500 Malbec subsea cable to Argentina

GlobeNet and Facebook kicked off construction of anew submarine cable system linking Brazil and Argentina.

GlobeNet and Facebook will co-own the system and it will be operated by GlobeNet.

The "Malbec" cable, which is named after the renowned Argentinian wine, will span 2,500 km linking Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo to Buenos Aires, with a branching unit to reach Porto Alegre, Brazil. The system will connect Argentina to GlobeNet's network in Brazil, which offers onward service to the United States. The Malbec cable system will feature six fiber pairs, delivering double the current international capacity to Argentina.
Globenet said Malbed will be the  first new submarine cable route to reach the Argentinian coast since 2001.

This project is a testament to our capabilities, expertise and commitment to the region where we have been operating for 15 years."

The ready-for-service date will be in the first half of 2020.

GlobeNet implements Ciena's GeoMesh with 6500 Packet-Optical Platform

GlobeNet, a wholesale provider of telecom infrastructure in the Americas, is implementing Ciena’s GeoMesh Extreme solution, including the 6500 Packet-Optical Platform powered by WaveLogic Ai coherent optics, to deliver 200G wavelengths along its 23,500 km fiber optic subsea cable system across the Americas.

Ciena’s solution is configured with a Packet/OTN architecture, ensuring multi-site connectivity with 200G wavelengths to handle data growth. Ciena said this added resiliency against fault scenarios provides service assurance for GlobeNet to protect the large amount of capacity carried by WaveLogic Ai. Additionally, Ciena’s Blue Planet Manage, Control, Plan (MCP) software improves network visibility through real-time software control.

“This deployment is a testament to our experience interconnecting the world with open submarine networks through a combination of flexible network solutions and support team. This resilient, cost-effective solution will provide GlobeNet with the highest capacity available, along with the ability to scale and create a more adaptive network,” stated Ian Clarke, Vice President, Global Submarine Systems, Ciena.

GlobeNet expands facilities in Rio de Janeiro and Colombia

GlobeNet, a wholesale provider of telecom infrastructure in the Americas, announced that the expansion of its colocation facility in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the construction of a new data centre facility in Barranquilla, Colombia are scheduled to be completed in August as part of efforts to address increasing demand for wholesale telco and IT services in the Latin American market.

Both of the facilities are designed to expand GlobeNet's strategy of providing neutral interconnection for international and local operators, as well as enabling access to international destinations via its subsea cable system. These latest expansions complement GlobeNet's existing optical cable network, which spans more than 23,500 km throughout the Americas.

 Regarding the expansions, Eduardo Falzoni, CEO at GlobeNet, said, "The 200 sq. metre, upgradeable tier III data centre in Barranquilla allows integrators to offer sensitive customers a secure and resilient environment, diverse from Bogotá, to fulfil IT, security and disaster recovery needs… adjacent to GlobeNet's subsea cable landing station it will support the full suite of IaaS services".



  • GlobeNet noted that Internet penetration in the Latin America region is forecast to rise from around 56% in 2016 to nearly 61% by 2019 according to data from Internet World, with Brazil and Colombia in the top three Latin American countries in terms of Internet users in 2016. The study estimated that there were 139 million users in Brazil and 28.5 million in Colombia at the end of 2016.
  • In May last year, GlobeNet launched 100 Gbit/s wavelength services from New York and Miami in the U.S. to key data centres in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo in Brazil. Leveraging advanced DWDM technology, GlobeNet's wavelength services offer support for application types and protocols including SONET/SDH, IP and ATM. GlobeNet noted at the time that it had expanded its network to São Paulo via a PoP at Equinix's SP2 facility in 2015.
  • Recently, GlobeNet announced the appointment of Erick W. Contag as executive chairman and Eduardo Falzoni as CEO. Mr. Contag previously served as GlobeNet CEO from 2008. Mr Falzoni joined Globenet as chief commercial officer in 2016, having previously served in senior roles with companies including Latin American Nautilus, Telecom Italia Sparkle and Telecom Argentina.

GlobeNet Deploys Infinera on US Terrestrial Network

GlobeNet, a wholesale provider of Latin and North America data network services, has deployed Infinera's DTN-X packet optical transport networking platform across its North America routes in the Northeast and South Florida.

GlobeNet's submarine cable network spans 23,500 km system and offers the lowest latency available between the Americas. The network links cable landing stations in Tuckerton, NJ and Boca Raton, FL, USA, with cable landing stations in Fortaleza (CE) and Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil, St. David’s, Bermuda, Barranquilla, Colombia as well as Maiquetía, Venezuela.

GlobeNet has deployed an Infinera Intelligent Transport Network across its entire U.S. terrestrial backhaul network. The Infinera DTN-X offers GlobeNet the capacity to deliver 100 Gbps coherent transmission today via 500 Gbps super-channels, with a forward-scale design to support terabit super-channels in the future.

Infinera said this upgrade provides GlobeNet a network that can deliver over eight terabits per second (Tbps) of transmission capacity on a single fiber.

GlobeNet and Equinix Optimize Brazil-US Connectivity


GlobeNet, a wholly owned subsidiary of Oi (formerly Brasil Telecom), has extended its low latency network into Equinix’s MI3 International Business Exchange (IBX) data center in Boca Raton, Florida, opening up the fastest IP traffic route from the United States to Brazil.

Equinix’s MI3 facility serves as a carrier-neutral network access point for GlobeNet to connect its low latency, subsea cable route from Equinix’s SP2 facility in São Paulo, Brazil.

Equinix said undersea cables are typically terminated at a landing station.  The new arrangement with GlobeNet brings its undersea fiber connectivity directly into the Equinix data center in Boca Raton.
The companies noted that roughly 75 percent of all network traffic emanating from Latin America enters the United States via Miami. Globally, MI3 has the sixth highest Internet capacity and is a key hub location for domestic and international traffic routes. As a result, Equinix and its Brazilian subsidiary ALOG are perfectly positioned to serve high-bandwidth events, such as the upcoming 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil.

GlobeNet Boosts Bermuda Undersea Cable


GlobeNet, a wholly owned subsidiary of Oi (formerly Brasil Telecom), completed construction on its new high capacity subsea cable system (Segment 5), which connects Bermuda to New Jersey.  The new subsea cable system has a total design capacity of 30 Tbps.  It is designed to support 150 wavelengths per fiber-pair at 100 Gbps per wavelength.

As an integral part of GlobeNet’s dual-ring subsea cable system, Segment 5 has the largest cross-sectional capacity per fiber pair of any system built or contracted to date.

The Segment 5 system includes the use of TE SubCom Submarine Line Terminating Equipment (SLTE), which allows transmission of multiple high-quality, high-bandwidth optical signals over ultra-long distances.

GlobeNet to Add 100 Gbps Colombian Spur

GlobeNet, Oi's international subsidiary provider of submarine capacity, has selected Alcatel-Lucent to extend the GlobeNet submarine cable system to Colombia. The 100G capable link will help GlobeNet provide a significant increase in capacity to support the deployment of next-generation wireless services and support the exploding demand for broadband services.

The 1000km extension will create a link with direct connectivity between Colombia and the United States, and between Colombia and Venezuela. It will have a state-of-the-art design with ultimate design capacity in excess of 8 Tbps on each connectivity path.

The GlobeNet submarine cable system currently spans 22,000 kilometers with landing points in Rio de Janeiro and Fortaleza in Brazil, Maiquetía in Venezuela, St. David’s in Bermuda, Boca Raton Florida and Tuckerton in New Jersey, United States. With this extension which will land in Colombia’s Atlantic coast, GlobeNet further positions to offer ultra-fast low latency services on both protected routes between the United States and Latin America.

The Alcatel-Lucent solution deployed for this project includes an integrated 100G capable wet plant of cable and high bandwidth repeaters, power feed equipment, and its 1620 Light Manager (LM) submarine line terminal equipped with advanced coherent technology and offering unique flexibility to increase direct connectivity between countries.
