Arista announces OSFP Optical Line System for 400G

Arista Networks announced an optical line system in an OSFP (Octal Small Form-factor Pluggable) module form factor. The OSFP-LS line system was purposely conceived and designed for the support of 400G ZR digital coherent optics.

The Arista OSFP-LS collapses legacy optical line systems into an OSFP module which can be plugged into any Arista OSFP port, supporting up to 8 DWDM wavelengths with a single fiber pair, and delivering up to 3.2Tbps of DCI traffic over 100km.

Arista describes its OSFP-LS as a highly compact, low power and cost-effective solution for increasing bandwidth between data centers without the need for external optical line systems. Features also include automatic setup with no operator configuration required.

“The OSFP-LS is far easier to deploy than conventional external line systems that require their own power feed and control management software while consuming valuable rack space. Interconnecting two data center sites with DWDM becomes as simple as connecting two switch ports,” said Hacene Chaouch, Distinguished Engineer, Arista Networks.

The OSFP-LS is in testing and qualification now with availability in 2H 2020.

IX Australia deploys Smartoptics’ low cost 100G Open Line System

Internet Exchange Australia (IX Australia) has deployed Smartoptics' DCP-M40 Open Line System and Pluggable DWDM QSFP28 PAM4 transceivers to provide high capacity links to metro locations in Sydney.

The new, automated, network was delivered by Independent Data Solutions (IDS) and provides IX Australia with lowest cost 40 x 100 Gb/s traffic capability over a single pair of fibers.

The new Smartoptics DCP-M40 Open Line System enables up to 40x100G wavelengths over spans exceeding 50km with fully automated addition of new channels for ease of use.

Oslo-based Smartoptics AB said space and power considerations were important factors in the technology choice due to the cost of colocation and available power in hosting facilities. The 1U form factor and max 45W power consumption for a fully loaded 40 channels system were significantly differentiating factors over more traditional coherent transponders.

ADVA Intros Direct Detect Open Optical Layer for DCI

ADVA Optical Networking introduced its direct detect open optical layer for Internet Content Providers and Cloud Network Providers who want to avoid the expense of traditional coherent solutions.

The new solution, which is a key expansion of the ADVA FSP 3000 CloudConnect platform, is available in two distinct formats. It can either be bought as an Open Line System (OLS) in a disaggregated manner or as a complete solution that includes the terminal and the line system.

ADVA Optical Networking said one compelling feature of its OLS is its SmartAmp technology that enables direct detect transmissions to be transported up to 100km. By disaggregating the terminal functions from the line system, customers are able to evolve and optimize each network layer separately. Not only does this lead to significant savings in regards to footprint and power, but it also means that wavelengths can be used with any terminal equipment, such as switch routers or classic transponders.

Coriant Adds Open Line System Capabilities to DCI Portfolio

Coriant introduced Open Line System (OLS) capabilities for its Groove G30 DCI Platform.

The open, plug-and-play optical layer solution provides 3X the density over comparable offerings, and gives network operators the ultimate in configuration flexibility to cost-efficiently address diverse Data Center Interconnect (DCI) and metro applications, including coherent and direct detect (PAM4) interconnect.

The Coriant Groove OLS solution offers open Northbound Interfaces (NBI) using YANG model-based NETCONF and RESTCONF, as well as an easy-to-use Command Line Interface (CLI), web-based Graphical User Interface (GUI), and support for SNMP.  The platform is designed to support up to 96 channels (wavelengths) in a 1RU form factor with full DWDM terminal capabilities, including all passive and active functions.

Coriant said its Groove OLS solution sets new benchmarks in flexibility and efficiency. Key benefits include:

  • Open line system – prevents vendor lock-in by disaggregating the optical layer from the transmission layer and enables the Coriant Groove OLS solution to be paired with Groove or third-party transmission/transponder layer solutions
  • Optical layer density – supports up to 96 channels in 1RU with full WDM terminal functionality, including passive and active optical layer functions, delivering 3X the density over comparable solutions and enabling significant OpEx savings via footprint and power efficiencies

  • Open management – shares common YANG model-based NETCONF and RESTCONF, and other northbound management and control interfaces with the Coriant Groove G30 DCI Platform for fast deployment and ease of integration into any OS environment
