Dell'Oro: Total PON equipment revenue up 27% Y/Y

Total global revenue for the Broadband Access equipment market increased to $4.7 B in 3Q 2022, up 17 percent year-over-year (Y/Y), according to a new report from Dell'Oro Group. Spending on PON equipment continues to fuel the overall market, with revenue for PON OLTs breaking last quarter’s record of $1.3 B in the quarter.

“Thanks to a robust competitive environment and ongoing subsidization efforts, investments in new fiber broadband networks and equipment continue to grow,” said Jeff Heynen, Vice President with Dell’Oro Group. “It will be interesting to see if this momentum and resilience will carry into the fourth quarter and 2023, given the macroeconomic headwinds,” explained Heynen.

Additional highlights from the 3Q 2022 Broadband Access and Home Networking quarterly report:

  • Total XGS-PON ONT unit shipments exceeded 1 M for the second straight quarter, reaching 1.5 M worldwide.
  • Total cable access concentrator revenue was flat Y/Y at $259 M. Remote PHY devices and remote OLTs both reached record levels in the quarter, as cable operators continue to expand their DAA and fiber initiatives.
  • Total cable CPE units increased 5 percent Y/Y, as vendors were once again able to fulfill orders that had been backlogged for multiple quarters. Total revenue was up 9 percent Y/Y as higher-end DOCSIS 3.1 gateways are the percentage of total unit shipments.

Taiwan's AIROHA ships XGS-PON chip

AIROHA, a subsidiary of Taiwan-based MediaTek,confirmed that is XGS-PON chips are now being used in customer premise equipment (CPE) by a U.S. broadband provider.

AIROHA says its XGS-PON ICs enable symmetric 8 Gbps upload and download speeds with 3ms low latency.

AIROHA has more than 1,100 staff coming from MediaTek's former IoT department and a number of IC design houses merged or purchased by MediaTek.

Nextlink rolls out Nokia's XGS-PON in 12 states

Nextlink Internet, a rural-based and rural-focused operator in the U.S., has chosen Nokia's XGS-PON solution to support network growth, connecting 200,000 homes and businesses in rural and exurban communities in its seven existing and five new states.

Nextlink is investing in network expansion, adding Texas, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Wyoming and Louisiana to its footprint. The company is also expanding its reach into unserved and underserved areas in the states it already operates, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois, Iowa and South Dakota.

Nokia’s XGS-PON technology allows Nextlink to deploy 10G broadband speeds with a simple path to 25G. In addition, Nextlink is leveraging Nokia’s ONT Easy Start SaaS to speed up and simplify service provisioning in customer homes coupled with WiFi Beacon residential gateways, which power an outdoor optical network termination (ONT) over CAT5/6 with POE+ eliminating the need for localized power.

Nokia Bell Labs demos 100G PON over a single wavelength

At Fiber Connect 2022 in Nashville, Nokia Bell Labs showed the first proof-of-concept demonstration of 100G PON. The prototype delivers 100Gbps downstream on a single PON wavelength.  The performance is achieved using digital signal processing as well optimizations of the modulation.Nokia is also introducing the concept of a "flexible PON", where the downstream performance can be adjusted in software based on the quality of the channel.Stefaan...

Lumen offers 8 Gbps residential service over XGS-PON

Lumen Technologies is now offering symmetrical 8 Gbps broadband over its Quantum Fiber residential and small business service. Lumen is using XGS-PON technology.

The 8 Gbps tier is available to select residents and small businesses in cities near Denver, Minneapolis and Seattle, with more cities to come.

Cambodia's SINET picks Nokia for XGS-PON

SINET, Cambodia's leading Internet Service Provider, has chosen Nokia to deploy its XGS Passive Optical Network (PON) for enterprise broadband service.

Nokia's XGS-PON solution will be initially deployed in the capital city of Phnom Penh before being expanded to other cities and regions. The deployment, which includes the upgrade of the existing Nokia fiber access nodes, will be completed in 2022. 

Nokia's fiber access solution is powered by its Quillion chipset, which concurrently supports three generations of PON technologies, GPON, XGS-PON and 25G PON.

CommScope introduces XGS-PON

CommScope introduced a suite of XGS-PON solutions for both greenfield FTTH and fiber-deeper scenarios. The suite features a flexible architecture; open, interoperable components; and dynamic, cloud-based operation. 

There are four components: new CommScope FLX PON OLT and ONU portfolio, ServAssure domain management and ServAssure NXT performance management software, fiber connectivity solutions, and engineering and project management services. 

Lab trials are expected to begin in Q3.

CommScope says its suite will enable network operators to:

  • Improve time to revenue and optimize capex through a software-based architecture that enables both disaggregated and aggregated PON architectures as well as the utilization of public and private cloud environments and multi-vendor strategies
  • Reduce opex, risks, and complexity through software-based domain and performance management—improve visibility into the network and help improve QoE, identify and resolve issues, and reduce truck rolls and repair times
  • Push technology changes further, faster through an open architecture that can accelerate deployment of new microservices as well as offer a modern, pay-for-use model

Huawei intros four optical infrastructure products

At its annual HUAWEI CONNECT 2021 event,  Huawei launched four new optical infrastructure products: a hybrid OTN (H-OTN) platform supporting Native Hard Pipes (NHPs) technology,  an OptiXsense platform for fiber monitoring, an industrial optical terminal, and a 10G mini optical terminal.

Huawei H-OTN supporting NHPs - the new platform integrates OTN and Optical Line Termination (OLT) device capabilities while guaranteeing the absolute security of core services and slashing latency by over 60%.

Huawei OptiXsense is designed for enhanced signal collection. It features an enhanced-Optical Digital Signal Processor (e-oDSP) module designed "to correct blind spot errors, raising the effective signal collection rate to 99.9% and achieving zero false negatives." It offers vibration wave identification engine powered by a 32-dimensional vibration wave analysis algorithm that increases the event recognition accuracy to 97%.

Huawei OptiXstar 2.0 industrial optical terminal is designed to carry video backhaul, sensing, and mechanical control services. An  precision circuit design auxiliary algorithm has been introduced to suppress circuit loop energy, satisfying the intrinsic safety requirements and eliminating the need for underground explosion-proof boxes. A detection algorithm 2.0 enables network switchover within 30 ms when a link or port fails.

Huawei 10G mini optical terminal brings for XGS PON campus customers. The product size is only one fifth of the industry average. With a built-in patented photoelectric composite connector, the power loss and optical path insertion loss of the device is 50% and 67% lower than the industry average, respectively. Moreover, it provides up to 90 W power supply for Wi-Fi 6 APs.

Nokia supplies XGS-PON to Telecom Slovenia

Telekom Slovenije has designated Nokia as a partner vendor for the supply of XGS-PON equipment for its FTTH network.  The deployment of the Quillion chipset-powered Nokia ISAM FX series will replace some existing access nodes and will also support the newly built FTTH network which covers the entire country.

 ADTRAN's Combo PON technology, which launched in June 2020, has been adopted by more than 100 operators worldwide, including every type of service provider—from altnets, RDOF recipients, multinational Tier 1 operators and cable operators.

Combo PON makes upgrading to symmetrical 10G PON services simple by seamlessly supporting the installed base of GPON subscribers while blanketing the entire FTTH network with the higher speed and capacity of symmetric 10 Gbps XGS-PON. ADTRAN brings Combo PON tech to its TA5000 fiber access platform

ADTRAN has added support for Combo PON within its Total Access 5000 (TA5000) fiber access platform, enabling network operators to deliver GPON and XGS-PON technologies over a single common optical distribution network. Both fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) technologies can be simultaneously deployed from a single advanced FTTH module, eliminating the need for performance-draining external coexistence modules.


ADTRAN says Combo PON can simplify the upgrade path to XGS-PON. Operators can seamlessly support the installed base of GPON subscribers while blanketing the entire FTTH network with the higher speed and capacity of XGS-PON. The TA5000 8-port Combo PON OLT Access Module with integrated coexistence functionality supports the delivery of GPON, XGS-PON and Combo PON from a common OLT port.

Radisys intros white box OLTs for GPON and XGS-PON

 Radisys introduced a Combo PON Optical Line Terminal (OLT) family including 16 and 32-port versions — a variant of which is the Radisys white box Combo PON OLT that supports both G-PON (2.488 Gbps downstream / 1.244 Gbps upstream) and XGS-PON (10 Gbps symmetrical) within the same PON port of the OLT. The white box OLTs are based on the VOLTHA/SEBA reference architecture and are field-hardened and scaled for commercial deployments today.

Radisys said its Combo PON OLT allows broadband providers to take advantage of pervasive GPON technology while giving them a flexible upgrade path to scale up and rollout XGS-PON deployments without costly rip and replace.

Tavistock looks to 10G XGS-PON in Orlando with ADTRAN

Tavistock Development Company is leveraging the ADTRAN Total Access 5000 (TA5000) 10G fiber access platform with XGS-PON technology to deliver Florida’s first 10 Gbps high-performance broadband service to Sunbridge, a master-planned community in Central Florida.

DRN deploys 10G XGS-PON in the Dakotas

Dickey Rural Networks (DRN) and its wholly-owned subsidiary ReadiTech, are deploying 10G PON services to subscribers in rural communities along the North Dakota-South Dakota border. The  cooperative broadband service provider is upgrading its network to XGS-PON with the Calix Intelligent Access EDGE. 

ReadiTech is overbuilding the existing DRN FTTH network with XGS-PON, leveraging 10-Gigabit symmetrical service capabilities to match the best wire speeds available in the state while simplifying network operations to increase efficiency and shed costs. 

The rural cooperative is using the AXOS E7-2 Intelligent Modular System, a scalable XGS-PON aggregation solution.

North Dakota's MLGC deploys XGS-PON with Calix

MLGC, a broadband service provider in North Dakota, is deploying the Calix Intelligent Access EDGE, enabling it to extend 5-Gigabit broadband service to subscribers. 

The rural BSP, which was named the state’s fastest internet and cable provider among small operators in 2020 by BroadbandNow, is expanding its multi-Gig residential broadband capabilities by overlaying its GPON access network with XGS-PON fiber-to-the-home (FTTH). 

Calix said its Intelligent Access EDGE solution is built on the temperature-hardened E7-2 Intelligent Modular System and its Always-On AXOS platform, enabling MLGC to embrace an everyPON strategy and scale broadband connections to 10-Gigabit. 

The regional BSP has already invested in the GigaPoint GP1100X ONU and plans to roll out the latest GigaSpire BLAST u6x in the second half of 2021, which will extend 10G capability all the way into subscriber homes and businesses.

Nokia to supply XGS-PON to UG in South East Europe

United Group (UG), a leading multi-play and media provider in South East Europe, has selected Nokia to deploy a fiber network and in-home mesh Wi-Fi solution across the eight different countries it operates in. 

The rollout will be based on Nokia Lightspan series FX for GPON and XGS-PON services. Nokia will also supply its ONT customer premises equipment and WiFi Beacons.

UG will use the network to deliver new enhanced broadband services to residential and business customers, offer mobile transport services, create new business opportunities such as off-loading mobile traffic and seamlessly evolve toward a virtualized access-network.

Vivacom Bulgaria to deploy XGS-PON with Nokia


Vivacom awarded a contract to Nokia to extend its GPON network in Bulgaria and introduce XGS-PON in strategic locations. Nokia was named sole network equipment supplier.

XGS-PON allows Vivacom to offer 10 Gbps symmetrical broadband services to residential and business customers.

Vivacom, a leading fiber access provider in Bulgaria, focuses on accelerating broadband coverage across the country. The roll-out is based on Nokia Lightspan series FX.

Australia's OptiComm to build 10G XGS-PON with ADTRAN

OptiComm, which is the largest private competitor to Australia's NBN, is in the final stages of developing the nation's first 10G XGS-PON. The plan is to deliver residential service at a nominal line speed of up to 1 Gbps, and commercial service reaching speeds up to 10 Gbps.

OptiComm has been working closely with ADTRAN at the latter’s research and development facility in Melbourne.

OptiComm has been a licensed carrier and wholesale network infrastructure operator since 2007. As of 2019, OptiComm was serving 60,000 active connections and its fiber network passed 100,000 dwellings.

Iskratel launches XGS-PON OLT blade

Iskratel launched its XGS-PON Optical Line Terminal (OLT) blade for its broadband-access product SI3000 Lumia, which supports multiple access technologies. The blade leverages network processors to operate in a flow-based mode and pave the way for operators to use next-generation, software-defined access solutions.

Fully equipped with XGS-PON blades, Iskratel’s single SI3000 Lumia XGS-PON OLT can serve up to 32,678 users from the same MEC chassis. The new four-port XGS-PON OLT blades in MEC chassis support full wire-speed throughput, as well as split ratio up to 1:512.

Dell'Oro: Broadband access equipment market drops 12%

Global revenue for broadband access equipment market decreased 12% year-over-year (Y/Y) to $3.2 billion, according to a newly published report by Dell’Oro Group.

A 371 percent Y/Y increase in XGS-PON OLT revenue and continued growth of XG-PON1 OLT ports and CPE offset continued DSL declines.

“Operators’ continued push to increase their fiber investments is resulting in strong Y/Y gains in PON OLT ports,” said Jeff Heynen, Senior Research Director at Dell’Oro Group. “Though XGS-PON continues to grow rapidly, 2.5 Gbps GPON remains the workhorse in the market,” explained Heynen.

Some highlights:


  • Total cable access concentrator revenue decreased 31 percent Y/Y to $287 M, driven once again by a slowdown in CCAP license purchases in North America
  • Total DSL port shipments plummeted 28 percent Y/Y, with all technologies showing significant Y/Y declines

Semtech debuts XGSPON chipset

Semtech announced production availability of itsGN7153B combo chip and GN7055B multi-rate burst mode transimpedance amplifier (TIA) for XGSPON Optical Line Terminals (OLTs).

Semtech's GN7153B is a combo chip supporting OLT transmit and receive signals in a fully integrated solution.

On the receive side, the GN7153B supports both XGPON (2.5G) and XGSPON (2.5G/10G) signals, while the transmit data path features Semtech’s 10G EML driver with ClearEdge CDR technology to effectively reset the signal jitter budget. Transmit path optimization can be accomplished through an I2C programmable PLL loop bandwidth control and a variety of jitter filter modes. The EML driver includes eye-shaping features and an Automatic Power Control (APC) loop to deliver best-in-class transmit eye quality. The burst mode receive data path includes a multi-rate 2.5G/10G limiting amplifier with a fast burst mode signal detect function, integrated discharge circuit and reset for short settling time.

Semtech said its high sensitivity burst mode TIA (GN7055B) is designed for XGSPON OLT applications. Using an external reset signal, the burst mode TIA meets the convergence time and burst dynamic range requirements of XGSPON 2.5G and 10G.The device features a fast Automatic Gain Control (AGC) loop to enable high dynamic range in burst mode applications. The GN7055B is offered in die form, supports industrial temperature range and uses a single 3.3V power supply.

Champion ONE intros XGS-PON Optical Transceivers

Champion ONE announced commercial availability of a new line of XGS-PON transceivers for delivering symmetrical 10G service in fiber-to-the-premises (FTTx) networks.

This product line conforms to the ITU standards G.987.2 and G.9807.2. It includes both SFP+ and XFP transceivers for OLT applications, and SFP+ transceivers for ONU applications over 20km rated distances.

Champion ONE notes that XGS-PON deployments will enable telecom network operators to converge services over a common fiber infrastructure, with legacy 1G GPON service and new 10G XGS-PON service over the same fiber.

“Network operators are deploying deeper fiber, copper/coax optimization, and next-generation radio access upgrades to support growing bandwidth demand among end-users,” said Champion ONE CEO John Jutila. “Our network architecture workshops with telecom infrastructure operators highlighted XGS-PON as one of several planned access technology upgrades.
