Vodafone UK selects Oracle's network policy management

Vodafone UK, which currently serves 18 million mobile and fixed-line customers in the UK will deploy Oracle's cloud-native network policy management solution as part of its 5G core.

Converged policy management is comprised of the 5G Core Policy Control Function (PCF) and the Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF). Oracle said its solution helps to dynamically prioritizes low-latency applications to edge data networks, while continuously optimizing network policies based on data analytics. For example, based on the data, the solution can help Vodafone customers get the network offering that best suits their needs, be it connecting smart devices, utilizing live streaming, or enabling AR/VR gaming. As such, Vodafone can provide a seamless experience across 4G and 5G networks while simultaneously delivering a smooth integration of new 5G services. The solution will be deployed by Oracle Communications consulting.

Arista posts revenue of $824 million, up 27% yoy

Arista Networks reported Q4 2021 revenue of $824.5 million, an increase of 10.1% compared to the third quarter of 2021, and an increase of 27.1% from the fourth quarter of 2020. Non-GAAP gross margin was 64.3%. Non-GAAP net income was $262.4 million, or $0.82 per diluted share, compared to non-GAAP net income of $197.7 million, or $0.62 per diluted share, in the fourth quarter of 2020.

Crehan: SmartNIC revenue reached $1.5 billion in 2021

Customer spending on smartNICs grew strongly during full-year 2021, resulting in revenues reaching $1.5 billion, according to a recent report from Crehan Research Inc.   The report further shows that smartNIC shipments comprised about 10 percent of total server-class NIC volumes. 

“SmartNICs have an outsize revenue impact relative to shipments, due to their price premiums over the foundational and performance NICs that currently comprise the vast majority of data center server and storage network connections,” said Seamus Crehan, president of Crehan Research. “The smartNIC price premium is a result of the advanced functionality and programmability enabled by processors, FPGAs, and acceleration engines to handle more complex networking tasks and offload CPUs.”   

Looking forward, Crehan expects that smartNICs are about to see much broader customer adoption due to a combination of factors, including:  

  • VMware leveraging smartNIC technology as a key enabler of its next-generation infrastructure platform (Project Monterey).
  • SmartNIC adoption now, by the world’s three largest server-class NIC customers, in conjunction with recent traction of smartNICs outside of the large hyper-scalers, particularly in the service provider segment.
  • Central smartNIC strategies and significant investments by most of the current incumbent server-class NIC vendors.
  • The arrival of specialized data and infrastructure processor engines for smartNICs that are explicitly designed to securely and efficiently handle the offloading of networking and storage-related tasks – namely, DPUs and IPUs.
  • The volume and complexity of data traffic has reached a tipping point resulting in the need for new approaches and architectures, especially as networking moves into the era of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and virtual and augmented reality.

"Given their expected increase in market adoption and associated price premiums, customer spending on smartNICs will likely exceed spending on foundational and performance server-class NICs within three years," Crehan said.

Juniper acquires WiteSand for cloud Network Access Control

Juniper Networks has acquired WiteSand, a start-up specializing in cloud-native zero trust Network Access Control (NAC) solutions. Financial terms were not disclosed. The solution moves NAC operations from on-premise hardware built using monolithic code bases to the cloud. It also leverages AIOps for automated provisioning, monitoring, analysis and security.

Juniper said the acquisition accelerates its efforts to deliver a next-generation NAC solution as a key element of their AI-driven enterprise portfolio.

“Both WiteSand and Juniper share a common vision of disrupting the antiquated NAC space with cloud agility and AI-driven intelligence,” said Sujai Hajela, EVP AI-Driven Enterprise, Juniper Networks.

AMD completes acquisition of Xilinx

AMD completed its previously-announced  acquisition of Xilinx in an all-stock transaction. Xilinx stockholders received 1.7234 shares of AMD common stock and cash in lieu of any fractional shares of AMD common stock for each share of Xilinx common stock.

AMD expects the acquisition to be accretive to non-GAAP margins, non-GAAP EPS and free cash flow generation in the first year.

Former Xilinx CEO Victor Peng will join AMD as president of the newly formed Adaptive and Embedded Computing Group (AECG), which remains focused on driving leadership FPGA, Adaptive SoC and software roadmaps.

Openreach deploys VIAVI automated testing

Openreach is using Viavi Solutions to automate testing the quality and speed of the Openreach "Full Fibre" broadband network

The deployment uses Viavi's Fusion, a virtual performance monitoring system, to deliver an on-demand network "speedometer" of the performance that end users can achieve. This will be the first time that proactive network testing of end user speeds has been deployed in fibre access networks across the UK independent of the customer's internet connection.

VIAVI Fusion incorporates both hardware and software, which will be used to rapidly isolate and troubleshoot faults on the network. Diagnostics will be automated for any issues as they're raised by Openreach's Communications Provider (CPs) customers. In addition, customer service will be enhanced as contact center procedures will be automated, equipping operators with near real-time test results for rapid pass/fail interpretation. This allows further troubleshooting to be focused on the root cause, whether inside the Openreach network, or back with the CPs.

A key element of Fusion is its smart small form-factor pluggable (SFP) capability, enabling micro-probes plugged into thousands of nodes across the country. These probes enable automated throughput testing from all CPs ingress points to end-user premises, for millions of consumers. Now in its fourth generation of technology, VIAVI smart SFP technology supports 1G & 10G line rates across a variety of physical standards.

IBM acquires Sentaca, a telco consultancy

IBM has acquired Sentaca, a telco consulting services and solutions provider based in Boston. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Sentaca's team of technology consultants across the U.S. and Canada build and migrate mission-critical applications on leading cloud service providers and open-source platforms like Red Hat OpenShift and OpenStack. Sentaca has supported digital transformation, next-generation networks and improved consumer experience for CSPs and media companies since its founding in 2008.

Sentaca will join IBM Consulting's fast-growing Hybrid Cloud Services business to solve clients' strategic and technology challenges such as cost-of-ownership, monetization, scalable and secure architecture, and address opportunities including 5G, IoT and streaming that can accelerate the creation and delivery of new services.

China Telecom verifies Huawei's 200G optical over 3600 km

 China Telecom and Huawei have jointly completed the lab verification of a 200G+  transmission system over 3600 km without electrical regeneration.

Huawei's optical-electrical transmission solution is based on its Flexgrid Blade OXC. It features Super 200G+ based on channel-matched shaping (CMS), special pluggable erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) with ultra-wide gain spectrum, Super C+L band ready Raman amplifiers, and liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) supporting flexible slicing and ultra-low filter penalty.

II-VI ships 400G ZR+ QSFP-DD-DCO transceivers to Windstream Wholesale

II‐VI confirmed shipment of its 400G ZR+ QSFP-DD-DCO transceiversto Windstream Wholesale for field qualification.

II-VI’s 400G transceivers leverage digital coherent optics and offer optical output power of 0 dBm. The transceivers can plug directly into QSFP-DD transceiver slots on IP routers. 

II-VI said Windstream can leverage this technology to optically connect routers directly to access, metro, and regional DWDM transport networks without additional intermediary interfaces, eliminating an entire layer of optical equipment and thereby significantly reducing both capital and operational expenditures.

Windstream and II-VI to develop 400G QSFP-DD pluggables

Windstream Wholesale is working with II-VI to co-develop next-generation, 400G transceivers. The companies said their joint work will:
  • Deliver the world’s first high-performance 0 dBm, 400G QSFP-DD coherent pluggable module—making these transceivers compatible with existing and emerging modern ROADM based photonic layers supporting multi-service, multi-layer architectures;
  • Significantly increase 400G transceiver density by drastically reducing the size and power demands of 400G pluggables relative to sled-based and even CFP2-based solutions;
  • Reduce capex and opex by allowing for direct insertion of high-performance coherent optics into current 400G enabled routers, based on the smaller form factor; and
  • Open up a direct technical path for the further evolution IP-over-DWDM with ROADM-based photonic layers, extending the application space beyond simple point-to-point DCI style networks.


Jio Platforms and SES to partner on satellite broadband for India

Jio Platforms Limited and SES agreed to establish a joint venture – Jio Space Technology Limited – to deliver the next generation scalable and affordable broadband services in India leveraging satellite technology.  JPL and SES will own 51% and 49% equity stake in the joint venture respectively. 

The JV, which will use SES-12, SES’s high-throughput GEO satellite serving India, and O3b mPOWER, SES’s next-generation MEO constellation, will be the vehicle for providing SES’s satellite data and connectivity services in India, except for certain international aeronautical and maritime customers who may be served by SES. It will have availability of up to 100 Gbps capacity from SES and will leverage Jio’s premiere position and sales reach in India to unlock this market opportunity. 

As part of investment plan, the joint venture will develop extensive gateway infrastructure in India to provide services within the country. Jio, as an anchor customer of the joint venture, has entered into a multi-year capacity purchase agreement, based on certain milestones along with gateways and equipment purchase with total contract value of circa US $100 million.

OneWeb and Hughes plan LEO broadband service for India

OneWeb and Hughes Network Systems signed a strategic six-year Distribution Partner agreement to provide low Earth orbit (LEO) connectivity services across India. 

The arrangement between OneWeb and Hughes Communications India Private Ltd. (HCIPL), a joint venture between Hughes and Bharti Airtel,  follows the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the companies in September 2021.

As the leading satellite broadband provider in India , HCIPL is well positioned to deliver services to enterprise and government with OneWeb capacity, especially in areas outside the reach of fibre connectivity. OneWeb will connect towns, villages, and local and regional municipalities in those hardest-to-reach areas, playing a critical role in bridging the digital divide.

Hughes, through its parent company EchoStar, is a longstanding and supportive OneWeb shareholder. It is also an ecosystem partner to OneWeb, developing gateway electronics – including for those in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu – and the core module that will power every user terminal for the system. Hughes also is the prime contractor on an agreement with the U.S. Air Force Research Lab to integrate and demonstrate managed LEO SATCOM using OneWeb capacity in the Arctic region.

OneWeb launches 34 satellites, bringing constellation to 428

OneWeb confirmed the successful deployment of 34 satellites by Arianespace from the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana. 

The launch marks OneWeb's first in 2022 and 13th overall, bringing its total in-orbit constellation to 428 satellites. It represents 66 percent of OneWeb’s planned 648 LEO satellite fleet that will deliver high-speed, low-latency global connectivity.

OneWeb notes that it has signed new distribution partnership agreements with several companies in the last month – including Hughes Network Systems, Marlink, and Field Solutions Holding.

Microsoft selected to build a sovereign cloud for Singapore

Singapore's Home Team Science and Technology Agency (HTX) has selected Microsoft to develop a sovereign cloud to accelerate digital transformation and innovation across the government's Home Team departments.

The sovereign cloud will be built on Microsoft Azure for on-demand, high performance cloud computing and data storage resources. High system resiliency and availability will ensure that Home Team’s operations continue 24×7 with minimal interruption. Coupled with high-speed network connectivity and advanced analytics, the sovereign cloud capability will provide Home Team officers on the ground with real time data to enable swifter incident response and decision-making.

As part of the agreement, Microsoft will provide additional training and educational opportunities, including 600 training seats along with exam certificates that will be made available annually to HTX. This training will advance the technical skills of cloud technology professionals in Singapore.

Mavenir announced the commercial availability of its Intelligent IoT Platform (IIoTP) for gaining insights into data streams from IoT sensors.

MaxLinear and Sivers develop microwave radios for 57-71 GHz band

MaxLinear Sivers Wireless announced the joint development of a V-Band RF/Modem fpr unlicensed point-to-point microwave radios in the 57-71 GHz band.

The development was conducted on behalf of a leading microwave radio OEM customer. This project is now in execution mode with initial plans for a reference design and then the first joint product and customer deployments, expected to be on the market in late 2022 or early 2023.

Strategic acquires a data center in Denver for $13.5 million

Strategic Data Center has acquired a triple net leased data center located in the Denver metropolitan area from Chirisa Investments for approximately $13.5 million.

The 32,000 square foot facility was built in 1999 and is 100% leased to a multi-cloud and managed services provider. Having recently executed a 15-year lease on the property, the tenant has indicated that it plans to spend over $4 million on capital improvements, including $2.5 million to upgrade the data center’s critical capacity from 1.0 MW to 1.5 MW to meet or exceed the criteria of a Tier III data center. With 14 data centers across the U.S., the tenant has built a colocation and cloud service infrastructure platform to service businesses of all sizes with their IT investments while moving to the cloud.

OIF releases Co-Packaging Framework IA

OIF published a framework Implementation Agreement (IA) for co-packaging of communication and computing interfaces with one or more ASICs. The document identifies critical co-packaged applications and their requirements and charting a path for interoperability standards.

The Co-Packaging track of OIF’s Physical & Link Layer (PLL) Working Group began by studying the application spaces contributed by the end-users. Then, it examined various related topics, including electrical and optical interfaces, thermal and mechanical considerations, reliability, safety, environmental and management interfaces. The findings of the work are summarized in the Framework Document IA.

OIF has initiated two follow-on co-packaging projects: External Laser Small Form Factor Pluggable (ELSFP) Project, announced in May 2021, and the 3.2T Module Project, announced in March 2021.

POET supplies optical interposer to Celestial AI

POET Technologies announced an agreement with Celestial AI to provide multi-laser integrated external light source (ELS) modules using its advanced packaging platform based on the POET Optical Interposer. The agreement includes a contract for continued platform development, along with a purchase order for initial quantities of the advanced modules.

Celestial AI is developing a Photonic Fabric platform that uses light for data movement both within chip and between chips.

Celestial AI raises $56M for Photonics Fabric for multi chip systems

Celestial AI, a start-up based in Sunnyvale, California, raised $56 million in Series A funding for its proprietary hardware and software platform for machine learning chipsets.

Celestial AI’s proprietary Photonic Fabric technology platform aims to to fundamentally transform multi-chip processing systems. The Photonic Fabric enables optically addressable memory and compute (within chip and chip-to-chip). The company says uts proprietary architecture enables elegant, low-complexity system software, allowing highly efficient mapping of data and compute without the need for complex optimizations. This software advantage extends to multi-chip exascale systems as the Photonic Fabric democratizes optical access to effectively limitless memory and compute. 

The funding round led by Koch Disruptive Technologies (KDT) with participation from Temasek’s Xora Innovation fund, The Engine, the venture firm spun out of MIT, Tyche Partners, Merck’s corporate venture fund, M-Ventures, IMEC XPand, and venture capital investor in the Princeton University ecosystem, Fitz Gate. 

The new capital will be used for expanding the global engineering team, product development and strategic supplier engagements, including Broadcom, to build the company’s Orion AI accelerator products.

POET Technologies has secured a commitment from a leading network systems company for a unique multi-engine design for 100G CWDM4 and 100G LR4 Optical Engines based on the POET Optical Interposer.  The combined value of the NRE and the purchase order for initial units exceeds US$1.2 million.

The POET Optical Interposer enables the integration of electronic and photonic devices into a single multi-chip module using advanced wafer-level semiconductor manufacturing techniques and packaging methods. The company says its platform eliminates costly components and labor-intensive assembly, alignment, burn-in and testing methods employed in conventional photonics.
