Samsung updates roadmap, aims for 1.4nm nodes in 2027

At its annual Samsung Foundry Forum event in San Jose, California, Samsung Electronics outlined its goals to drive process nodes to 1.4nm in 2027. 

Samsung, which currently has 3nm process technology in mass production, Samsung will be further enhancing gate-all-around (GAA) based technology and plans to introduce the 2nm process in 2025 and 1.4nm process in 2027.

The event focused on foundry process technology innovation, process technology optimization for each specific applications, stable production capabilities, and customized services, including the enhancement its GAA-based 3nm process support for HPC and mobile applications. Samsung will also diversify the 4nm process for HPC and automotive applications.

For automotive customers specifically, Samsung is currently providing embedded non-volatile memory (eNVM) solutions based on 28nm technology. In order to support automotive-grade reliability, the company plans to further expand process nodes by launching 14nm eNVM solutions in 2024 and adding 8nm eNVM in the future. Samsung has been mass producing 8nm RF following 14nm RF, and 5nm RF is currently in development.

Samsung also confirmed that its 3D packaging X-Cube with micro-bump interconnection will be ready for mass production in 2024, and bump-less X-Cube will be available in 2026.

In addition, Samsung highlighted its production expansion. The company plans to expand its production capacity for the advanced nodes by more than three times by 2027 compared to this year. Including the new fab under construction in Taylor, Texas, Samsung's foundry manufacturing lines are currently in five locations: Giheung, Hwaseong, and Pyeongtaek in Korea; and Austin and Taylor in the United States.

Lockheed Martin and Verizon demo 5G.MIL drones

Lockheed Martin and Verizon demonstrated 5G-enabled drones for capturing and securely transfering real-time intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) data from aircraft in flight. 

The demonstration, which occurred at Lockheed Martin’s 5G test range in Waterton, Colorado, used mmWave 5G to move data from aircraft in flight over Lockheed Martin’s multi-site, multi-vendor 5G.MIL pilot network.

Lockheed Martin flew four rotary wing drones on coordinated ISR missions while linked to two Verizon On Site Private Network nodes. The companies then seamlessly and securely moved the data captured by the drones between a 5G private network and a surrogate public network. 

The companies said the ability to use private and public 5G networks is key because it will extend the reach of 5G.MIL technology to a range of military environments where commercial networks may not be available or appropriate.

The drones then successfully located a target in the field that was transmitting a low power RF signal. The signal was detected because real-time drone sensing data was transmitted over the Verizon network and then processed by advanced signal processing algorithms running on edge compute resources, enabling geolocation of the signal source.

“To stay ahead of our adversaries, military decision-makers need the timely and accurate information that 5G.MIL delivered in this demonstration,” said Dan Rice, vice president of 5G.MIL Programs at Lockheed Martin. “By blending advanced commercial 5G capabilities with military capabilities using secure, open standards, we are helping to make the DOD’s vision for integrated deterrence a reality.”

Dell'Oro: Data Center Physical Infrastructure spending up 9%

Data Center Physical Infrastructure (DCPI) revenues grew 9 percent year-over-year in 2Q 2022, driven by average selling price increases and marginal improvement in unit shipments, according to a report from Dell'Oro Group.  Supply chain constraints are expected to linger into 2023 but minor improvements are forecast to lead to increasing unit shipments, alongside continued price realization in 2H 2022. These factors have led the 2022 full-year outlook for data center physical infrastructure to be raised by nearly 2 percent year-over-year (Y/Y).

“The Data Center Physical Infrastructure market remained resilient in 2Q 2022, despite Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and COVID-related lockdowns in China resulting in global macroeconomic uncertainty,” said Lucas Beran, Principal Analyst at Dell’Oro Group. “Furthermore, the global trends of electrification and digitalization, inherently linked to sustainability, are solidifying themselves as major DCPI market drivers, both in the short and long term. Historically high DCPI vendor backlogs provide the market with a strong runway into 2023. However, growing macroeconomic uncertainty and waning price realization are expected to moderate DCPI growth in 2023, particularly in the enterprise market segment.”

Additional highlights from the 2Q 2022 Data Center Physical Infrastructure Quarterly Report:

  • Eaton, Cyberpower, Huawei, and Schneider Electric gained revenue share in 2Q 2022.
  • North America and Asia Pacific (excluding China) were the fastest growing regions, at double-digit growth rates, in 2Q 2022. China was the only region to decline Y/Y, due to COVID-related lockdowns.
  • Product growth was broad-based, with shorter sale cycle products such as single-phase UPS and rPDU growing at double-digit rates, while longer sale cycle products such as three-phase UPS and cabinet power distribution grew at slightly lower rates.
  • Worldwide DCPI revenue growth is forecast above 10 percent in 2022, driven by double-digit cloud and colocation service provider growth and mid-single-digit enterprise growth.

SiTime supplies precision timing Tesla Dojo AI supercomputer

SiTime is delivering precision timing solutions for the Tesla Dojo System, a supercomputer that has been built with a no limits philosophy. 

Through close engineering collaboration and multiple iterations over an extended period, SiTime’s engineers provided an alternative MEMS oscillator, along with system-level techniques, that fixed the problem for dense integration design of Dojo power module.

“The problem on Tesla’s Dojo power module is one of the more unique cases in my 35 year engineering career,” stated Nara Bharath, executive vice president of systems engineering at SiTime.“The power module for Tesla’s Dojo system is very dense, with vertical integration of key components, including clocks. Intel's Mobileye files for IPO

GSMA Post-Quantum Telco Network Taskforce gets underway

A new GSMA Post-Quantum Telco Network Taskforce has been established with a mission to help define policy, regulation and operator business processes for the enhanced protection of telecommunications in a future of advanced quantum computing. Organizers believe that without quantum-safe controls in place, sensitive information such as confidential business information and consumer data could be at risk from attackers who harvest present-day data for later decryption. 

IBM and Vodafone are initial members.

“The GSMA Taskforce’s goal is to bring together leading global communication services providers with experts from IBM, Vodafone and other operators and ecosystem partners to understand and implement quantum-safe technology. By working together to establish consistent policies, we can define quantum-safe approaches that protect critical infrastructure and customer data, complementing our ongoing security efforts to increase resiliency in future networks,” said Alex Sinclair, the GSMA’s Chief Technology Officer.

To address the challenges presented by emerging quantum technology, the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced in July 2022 that it had chosen the first four post-quantum cryptography algorithms to be standardised for cybersecurity in the quantum computing era. These algorithms are designed to rely on the computational difficulty of problems from the mathematical areas of lattices, isogenies, hash functions and multivariate equations — and protect today’s systems and data from future quantum computers.

IBM, a leader in cryptography and pioneer in quantum technology – with the world’s largest fleet of cloud-accessible quantum computers – contributed to the development of three of NIST’s four chosen post-quantum algorithms.

Ericsson and O2 Telefónica demo 5G microwave backhaul at 10 Gbps

Ericsson and O2 Telefónica demonstrated 5G wireless backhaul at speeds of up to 10 Gbps over a distance of more than 10km.

Ericsson said the demo showed that microwave backhaul over traditional bands can support the continued build-out of high-performing 5G networks and enhanced mobile broadband services from urban to suburban and rural areas – one of the key challenges facing communications service providers in scaling up their 5G deployment.

Mavenir now runs on Google Cloud

Mavenir's cloud-native 5G solutions will now be available with public cloud infrastructure on Google Cloud.

The company has previously announced integration on AWS.

Mavenir said this collaboration demonstrates true cloud-native Open RAN products in production deployment on Google Distributed Cloud. Open RAN technology separates software from hardware, meaning more flexibility for mobile operators and customers. The Open RAN approach will see many companies providing the components that make up a mobile network site, where previously one vendor would have delivered a closed solution.

Validation of Mavenir’s Open RAN product in Google Cloud allows CSPs to deploy Mavenir’s 5G Open RAN products with Google Distributed Cloud Edge, global infrastructure and state-of-the-art unified container platform Anthos. The fully containerized Distributed Units (DUs) and Central Units (CUs) software run on Google Distributed Cloud Edge, enabled by Anthos, and Mavenir’s Webscale Telco PaaS to deliver ORAN-compliant RAN networks. Validation testing includes end-to-end UE calls with other simulated 5G network components. The critical DU components are incorporated with Google Distributed Cloud Edge’s new OS and RT kernel.

FCC: Florida cell sites recover from Hurricane Ian

A total of 444 cell sites remained out-of-service in Florida as of 02-October-2022, representing 5.5% of the state's cell sites. The down significantly from the peak of 1,552 cell sites out of commission on Thursday.

Cable and wireline companies reported the following number of subscribers out of service by state in the disaster area; this may include the loss of telephone, television, and/or Internet services:

Florida: 606,553

Ericsson to supply 5G FWA in Greenland

Ericsson is expanding its partnership with Tusass for the joint vision of a wireless Greenland. The partnership started in 2017 with a complete modernization of the mobile network while simultaneously adding high-quality 4G services across all populated areas in Greenland.

Now non-standalone (NSA) Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) 5G will be rolled out in Sisimiut, Maniitsoq, and Narsaq, before it is realized in several places in the rest of the country.

Nokia deploys IP/MPLS for Poland’s nationwide TV network

Nokia, in collaboration with Emitel and Oscilloquartz, completed the deployment of Poland’s most advanced IP transport and synchronization network for the nationwide coverage of digital TV broadcast services. 

The IP/MPLS network supports the nationwide infrastructure for Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) and multimedia distribution. Digital Terrestrial Television (DVB-T2) is the primary TV source for over 13 million Polish viewers. This transport network, comprising over 500 Nokia IP/MPLS routers across 300 locations and more than 130 advanced Primary Reference Timing Clocks by Oscilloquartz simultaneously with other infrastructure and network elements, is one of the most advanced IP/MPLS transport networks supporting time synchronization distribution in Europe today.

The strategic decision by the Polish government and regulators to upgrade all broadcast systems to the new DVB-T2 standard required upgrading the transport network in order to increase capacity, support new applications, and ensure very high synchronization accuracy and resilience, providing viewers with consistently excellent sound and video quality. Since DVB-T2 broadcasting involves very stringent time synchronization requirements, the transport network plays a key role in ensuring network time synchronization with sub-microsecond accuracy for each DVB-T2 transmitter, protecting against signal interference and spoofing.

Mavenir offers 2G, 4G and 5G Open RAN radios made-in-India

Mavenir commenced the production of 2G, 4G and 5G Open RAN Radios for the OpenBeam portfolio in India, for Indian and other prominent worldwide bands.

The OpenBeam portfolio includes massive MIMO, mmWave and multi-band remote radio heads (RRHs). The OpenBeam Open RAN radio solutions are available across all frequency bands and can be used for a wide range of use cases, including enterprises and public settings across urban or rural environments.

Hurricane Ian knocks out 1,552 cell sites in Florida

As of 29-September-2022, the FCC reports that 1,552 cell sites were out of service in Florida, approximately 11% of the 14,188 cell sites in the state. 

Of these, the FCC lists 180 cell sites as damaged/destroyed by the storm, while 795 cell sites are offline due to power issues, while 527 are on backup power.


The number of cell site outages in a specific area does not necessarily correspond to the availability of wireless service to consumers in that area. 

Cable and wireline companies reported 525,966 subscribers out of service in the disaster area for Hurricane Ian; this includes the loss of telephone, television, and/or Internet services.
