STL develops 160-micron fibre

STL announced a 160-micron optical fiber developed in India. This product meets telecom-grade optical performance standards and complies with the ITU G.657A2 standard.

STL said its 160-micron fibre packs more capacity in limited duct space with a reduced diameter cable of 6.4mm (~32% reduction compared to 250-micron fibre). 

The new fibre is expected to have a major impact on India's broadband landscape. For example - In a large-scale project like Bharatnet, where India needs to deploy ~20 Million fibre km cable by 2025, using 160-micron fibre instead of the standard 250-micron fibre can potentially reduce the deployment time by ~15%. This enables the use of ducts with a smaller diameter, thereby reducing the plastic footprint in the ground by ~30%.

STL develops multicore fibre and cable in India

STL introduced a line of multicore fibre and cable products developed at its Centre of Excellence in Maharashtra, India.

STL's Multiverse leverages Space Division Multiplexing to gain 4X transmission capacity per fibre, within the same diameter.

UK's Netomnia tests STL's programmable FTTx

STL will test its programmable FTTx (pFTTx) software solution with Netomnia for their live networks in the UK.

STL recently announced general availability for pFTTx, a software-defined, open, and disaggregated Passive Optical Network  solution that is intended to make fibre networks intelligent and agile. 

The company cites core benefits like scalability, enhanced and detailed Telemetry reports, open community alignment (ONF/BBF/ITU-T), onboarding of third party Quality of Experience (QoE) applications, providing a better customer experience along with faster time-to-market and reduced total cost of ownership. This software stack, being cloud-native (Kubernetes microservices-based), can run on any Cloud-native Computing Foundation (CNCF)-based telco Edge Cloud platform. The solution currently supports both XGS-PON and GPON technologies and is upgradeable to 25G. Also, STL's pFTTx solution is certified and listed on the VMware Marketplace.

STL and Netomnia have recently partnered for Optical Fibre deployment and are now collaborating to incorporate programmability into large-scale FTTx networks. Once concluded, this trial will pave the way for the adoption of advanced software-defined architectures for FTTx in the UK.

STL launches VMWare-powered programmable FTTx

STL introduced its Programmable FTTx (pFTTX), a software-defined, open, and disaggregated solution that is now now listed on VMware Telco Cloud Infrastructure 2.0 OpenStack Edition Platform.

STL appoints Paul Atkinson as CEO of its optical business

STL, an industry-leading integrator of digital networks, has appointed Paul Atkinson as the Chief Executive Officer for its Optical Networking Business, replacing Ankit Agarwal, who has played a crucial role in STL's global expansion in the Optical business. Agarwal widened the portfolio with the acquisition of Optotec & Metallurgica Bresciana and increased STL's scale and presence in Italy, UK, US, Brazil and China. Agarwal will now focus on driving the strategy and growth across STL.

STL collaborates with Facebook Connectivity on Evenstar radio units

STL is collaborating with Facebook Connectivity to design and develop 4G and 5G radio products as part of the Evenstar program, which is a collaborative effort led Facebook Connectivity  to accelerate the adoption of Open RAN technology. 

Through this collaboration, STL will build two advanced, high-power macro radio products. The first one is an O-RAN compliant radio providing higher capacity for dense deployments. As part of this engagement, STL will also develop an O-RAN compliant 4G+5G Dual Technology Radio that supports both technologies individually or/and concurrently. These 3GPP and O-RAN compliant radio products will be developed over the next year and will enable telecom operators around the world to scale up commercial deployments of open networking infrastructure and prepare their networks for Open RAN 5G.

STL acquires Clearcomm for FTTx integration expertise

STL (Sterlite Technologies Ltd) has acquired Clearcomm Group Ltd, a UK-based network integration company. The transaction is structured to acquire 100% of the share capital in 2 tranches. Tranche 1 entails acquisition of 80% of the share capital which will happen immediately (subject to customary pre-closing conditions), and is based on an Enterprise Value of GBP 15.5 million. The balance 20% shareholding will be acquired in 2023.

Clearcomm is a privately held company that provides end-to-end network integration solutions and capabilities in the UK, including for large-scale FTTx projects. The company claims revenues in the range of GBP 20 million and growth rates of over 25% over the past 3 years. 

STL said the deal will enhance the presence of its Network Integration solutions across UK and Europe.
