TE Connectivity to sell its Subcom business to Cerberus

TE Connectivity will sell its SubCom subsea communications business to Cerberus Capital Management for $325 million in cash.

SubCo, which is based in Eatontown, New Jersey, designs, manufactures, deploys and maintains subsea fiber optic cable systems. To date, SubCom has completed more than 100 cable systems and deployed over 610,000 kilometers of cable through its eight high-performance cable ship. The division has 1,400 employees.

TE Connectivity said its SubCom business was expected to contribute approximately $700 million in sales to fiscal year 2018 results, with a minimal contribution to profitability. TE will provide supplemental information with respect to the SubCom business when it announces its financial results for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2018.

TE Connectivity plans to use proceeds from the sale for share repurchases.

TE SubCom to provide secondary NOC for Hawaiki transpacific cable

Hawaiki Submarine Cable has selected TE SubCom to provide backup Network Operations Center (B-NOC) services for its transpacific cable systems. The B-NOC will operate from TE SubCom’s Eatontown, NJ, USA headquarters.

SubCom said its NOC solutions are vendor-neutral and offer global, 24x7x365 monitoring coverage with both high-level and regional visibility into network status.

The Hawaiki Cable System is a 15,000km fiber optic cable connecting Sydney, Australia; Mangawhai Heads, New Zealand; Tafuna, American Samoa; Kapolei, Hawaii, USA; and Pacific City, Oregon, USA. Stubbed branching units have been installed to facilitate future connections into New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga.

The Hawaiki system uses TE SubCom's optical add/drop multiplexing (OADM) nodes allows for additional landings in the Pacific region to be added as needed. Hawaiki will provide 43 Tbps of new capacity in the Pacific region. The system was built at a cost of US$300 million. Anchor customers on the new cable include Amazon Web Services, Vodafone, American Samoa Telecommunications Authority (ASTCA) and Research and Education Advanced Network New Zealand (REANNZ).

ICN2 subsea cable to link Vanuatu to Solomon Islands

Construction is expected to begin shortly on the ICN2 submarine cable linking Vanuatu to Solomon Islands in the south Pacific. The 1,632km cable will provide initial 200G high-capacity access to several landing sites utilizing SL14-A1 cables and Ciena Submarine Line Terminating Equipment (SLTE). The project is sponsored by Interchange Limited, a Vanuatu-based consortium. TE SubCom is the general contractor. The ready for service date is Q4 2019.

“This submarine cable link is an important part of connectivity for this area of the world,” said Sanjay Chowbey, president of TE SubCom. “We are pleased to work with Interchange Limited and apply our expertise and regional knowledge to this project.”

TE SubCom debuts SDN-powered Ocean Control Suite

TE SubCom introduced its software-defined Ocean Control suite for enabling automated control and extensive remote programmability over an entire communications network, both terrestrial and undersea.

TE SubCom said its Ocean Control Suite substantially increases the capabilities, efficiencies and options available to an external orchestrator.  The suite uses RESTful application programming interfaces (APIs) with read and write functionality to interface with undersea network elements like Wavelength Selective Switch Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexer (WSS ROADMs). SubCom partner Ciena is among the first to take advantage of the new API capabilities, which will be demonstrated to a select audience in Ciena’s Ottawa labs throughout May.

The first release of Ocean Control, available now, supports of SubCom’s enhanced Line Monitoring System (eLMS). Two additional releases are anticipated later this year that will further expand and enhance the Ocean Control suite’s functionality to cover all major wet and dry network elements.

Final splice complete on Hawaiki transpacific cable with up to 43 Tbps of capacity

The final splice of the Hawaiki Submarine Cable has been made and the system is on schedule for commercial launch next month

The carrier-neutral Hawaiki subsea cable links Australia and New Zealand to the mainland United States, as well as Hawaii and American Samoa, with additional potential future landings in New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga.

The Hawaiki Cable System comprises over 15,000 km of high-capacity cable, and the use of TE SubCom's optical add/drop multiplexing (OADM) nodes allows for additional landings in the Pacific region to be added as needed.
Hawaiki will provide 43 Tb of new capacity in the Pacific region, significantly dropping the cost of connectivity in this area.

TE SubCom builds subsea cable landing infrastructure in Los Angeles

TE SubCom is beginning construction of a beach landing platform in Los Angeles to serve multiple subsea cables. Easements, permitting and agreements are complete and groundbreaking will begin imminently.

TE Subcom said LAX beachhead project will use horizontal directional drilling to install bore pipes for the shore-end landing due to the minimal impact this type of operation has on the environment of the beach and tidal area.

Chris Carobene, vice president of marine services at TE SubCom said, “Starting the construction of these bore pipes is a significant milestone for us. The project will enable a gateway to greater information capacity and significantly increased speed. We are eager to begin and looking forward to completion of the work.” Carobene added, “We continue to progress the project according to schedule and look forward to aiding our customers with this critical enabling infrastructure”.

Ciena adds L-Band to its subsea GeoMesh Extreme

Ciena is boosting the horsepower of GeoMesh Extreme submarine solution by adding support for L-Band spectrum. The platform also gains the ability to operate on TE SubCom’s L-Band wet plant system, nearly doubling the information-carrying capacity of a submarine cable.

Specifically, in addition to current C-Band (~ 1530nm to 1565nm) spectrum, Ciena’s GeoMesh Extreme solution now opens up the L-Band (~ 1656nm to 1625nm) in the same optical fiber, doubling the carrying capacity of an undersea cable.

Some highlights:

  • The same technology used by Ciena’s C-Band SLTE, which is deployed worldwide, is ported to the new L-Band SLTE to ensure the highest level of performance. Ciena has already deployed in the L-Band over terrestrial networks for many years and will leverage this extensive knowledge, expertise, and field experience to ensure a seamless migration into the L-Band in submarine networks.
  • TE SubCom announced earlier in 2017 that it has demonstrated a new transmission record of 70.4 Tb/s capacity over 7,600 km. This record transmission is made possible utilizing SubCom’s C+L technology, effectively doubles the available transmission bandwidth of the repeater by an unprecedented factor of two in supported capacity per fiber pair when compared to the same number of fiber pairs in traditional C-Band technology.
  • Submarine cable operators will also benefit from Ciena’s advanced Blue Planet MCP solution that allows for managing the Ciena C/L-Band SLTE and TE SubCom C/L-Band wet plant from a single, unified management platform for a seamless, end-to-end, best-in-breed Open Cable.

Google commissions own subsea cable from CA to Chile

TE Subcom has been awarded a contract by Alphabet, the parent company of Google, to build a subsea cable from California to Chile. A ready-for-service date is expected in 2019.

The Curie Submarine Cable will be a four fiber-pair subsea system spanning over 10,000 km from Los Angeles to Valparaiso. It will include a branching unit for future connectivity to Panama.

The project is believed to be the first subsea cable to land in Chile in 20 years.

HAVFRUE subsea cable to link NJ and Denmark with 108 Tbps capacity

TE SubCom will serve as the system supplier for HAFVRUE, a new subsea cable that will link New Jersey to the Jutland Peninsula of Denmark with a branch landing in County Mayo, Ireland. Optional branch extensions to Northern and Southern Norway are also included in the design.

The HAVFRU system will be owned and operated by multiple parties, including Aqua Comms, Bulk Infrastructure, Facebook, and others. Aqua Comms, the Irish cable owner/operator and carriers’ carrier, will serve as the system operator and landing party in U.S.A., Ireland, and Denmark. Bulk Infrastructure of Norway will be the owner and landing party for the Norwegian branch options.

The HAFVRUE subsea cable system will be optimized for coherent transmission and will offer a cross-sectional cable capacity of 108Tbps, scalable to higher capacities utilizing future generation SLTE technology. SubCom will incorporate their Wavelength Selective Switching Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexer (WSS-ROADM) for flexible wavelength allocation over the system design life. It is the first new cable system in almost two decades that will traverse the North Atlantic to connect mainland Northern Europe to the U.S.A.

HAVFRUE is the Danish word for mermaid.

Preparation work is underway and system ready-for-service (RFS) is expected in Q4 2019.

  • In September 2017, construction was completed on the 6,600 km MAREA subsea cable, which was jointly funded by Microsoft and Facebook. MAREA links Virginia Beach, Virginia to Bilbao, Spain. The cable will be managed by Telxius, Telefónica’s new infrastructure company. The cable features eight fiber pairs and an initial estimated design capacity of 160 Tbps. MAREA takes a more southern route than other transatlantic cables, which mostly connect northern Europe to the New York/New Jersey region.

DARE subsea cable to link East Africa with 30 Tbps of capacity

Construction activity for the Djibouti Africa Regional Express (DARE) submarine cable system is now underway as supply contract with TE Subcom is now in force.

The 5,400km DARE submarine cable system will deliver up to 30 Tbps of subsea capacity for East Africa and the Horn of Africa. The 100G capable system will connect Djibouti (Djibouti) and Mombasa (Kenya), with branches to three major coastal cities in Somalia, respectively Mogadishu, Berbera, and Bosaso. An additional optional branch is available to Dar Es Salaam (Tanzania)

The DARE consortium is composed of Djibouti Telecom and its partners in Somalia and Kenya

Transpacific Hawaiki submarine cable reaches development milestone

Hawaiki, the new subsea cable system that will link Australia, New Zealand, and islands of the south Pacific with Hawaii and the mainland United States, reached another construction milestone. The 14,000 km of undersea fiber-optic cable is in the final stages of being loaded aboard TE SubCom’s cable-laying vessels, the CS Global Sentinel and the CS Responder. Installation of the system will commence in early October 2017.

The fiber cable was manufactured at SubCom’s Newington, New Hampshire facility, along with more than 170 completed repeaters. TE SubCom also noted that horizontal directional drilling (HDD) for the cable landing in Pacific City, Oregon and Sydney, Australia has been completed. In Sydney, the construction of the land duct route is complete, the installation of the terminal equipment has started and the pulling of the land cable is scheduled to begin shortly. In New Zealand, the construction of the land duct route is complete and the construction of a new cable station is underway.

The system is on schedule for completion by mid-2018.

The carrier-neutral Hawaiki cable system was co-developed by New Zealand-based entrepreneurs Sir Eion Edgar, Malcolm Dick and Remi Galasso.

MAREA redefines the transAtlantic subsea bandwidth equation

Construction of the highest-capacity subsea cable to cross the Atlantic is now complete.

The 6,600 km MAREA subsea cable, which was jointly funded by Microsoft and Facebook, links Virginia Beach, Virginia to Bilbao, Spain. The cable will be managed by Telxius, Telefónica’s new infrastructure company. The cable features eight fiber pairs and an initial estimated design capacity of 160 Tbps.

The cable takes a more southern route than other transatlantic cables, which mostly connect northern Europe to the New York/New Jersey region.

“Marea comes at a critical time,” says Brad Smith, president of Microsoft. “Submarine cables in the Atlantic already carry 55 percent more data than trans-Pacific routes and 40 percent more data than between the U.S. and Latin America. There is no question that the demand for data flows across the Atlantic will continue to increase and Marea will provide a critical connection for the United States, Spain, and beyond."

TE SubCom launches global network operations center for subsea cables

TE SubCom launched a new global network operations center (NOC) to provide cable operators with a single source for fault, configuration, alarm, performance, security and maintenance network management.

SubCom said it is able to provide global 24x7x365 monitoring coverage and both high-level and regional visibility into a status of subsea systems on behalf of cable operators. The NOC has already been selected for the Monet Submarine Cable, a 10,556km cable consisting of six fibre pairs that is owned and operated by Algar Telecom (a Brazilian telecom company and ISP), Angola Cables (a multinational telecom company operating in the wholesale market), ANTEL (the Uruguayan telecom company) and Google.

“With the ongoing surge in undersea cable investment, more operators are searching for reliable network operations services. They’re finding they need providers that truly understand undersea networks and how to optimize their life cycles,” said Don Rotunno, managing director, sales operations, TE SubCom. “Undersea communications is SubCom’s business and the expertise we’ve amassed over decades in the industry will immediately benefit users of our new NOC solution.”

Deep Blue Cable selects TE SubCom for Caribbean Cable

Deep Blue Cable based in St. Lucia, the developer, owner and operator of a subsea fibre-optic system that will provide connectivity across the Caribbean islands and the Americas, announced it has contracted TE SubCom to build and deploy the new Deep Blue subsea cable system.

Deep Blue's pan-Caribbean system spans nearly 12,000 km and will feature initial landing points in 12 markets across the region, including the Cayman Islands, Curaçao, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago and Turks and Caicos Islands. The system will also offer dual diverse landings in the U.S., including the first cable landing on the Gulf Coast of Florida. The company plans to implement 40 cable landings for the system and to enable connectivity to 28 island nations in the region.

The Deep Blue subsea cable system will offer an initial design capacity of 6 Tbit/s per fibre pair over up to 8 fibre pairs and will utilise TE SubCom's proven OADM (optical add/drop multiplexer) branching unit technology, Route survey work for the cable is due to begin in August, followed by cable installation that is scheduled to start in September 2018. The system is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2019.

The network is designed to offer increased capacity and lower costs for residential and business customers in the region, as well as providing lower latency via direct connectivity between key traffic hubs and improved reliability. In addition, the Deep Blue cable will provide optical add/drop connection points to smaller markets in the region.

TE SubCom selected for South Pacific cable maintenance

TE SubCom, a TE Connectivity company and leading provider of submarine communications technology, announced that it has been awarded the South Pacific Marine Maintenance Agreement (SPMMA), a five-year service agreement with 14 cable operators in the region.

Under terms of the agreement, which began in March 2017, SubCom will maintain more than 51,000 km of cable that comprise 19 disparate telecommunications and power cable systems.

The SPMMA area covers the South Pacific region from Singapore in the west to Tahiti in the east, and from the southernmost point of New Zealand to Hawaii in the north. The agreement involves the maintenance cable systems across more than 28 million sq miles of the Pacific Ocean and will be supported by the cable ship Reliance, which is based in the South Pacific region.

As part of the agreement, SubCom will leverage its modern marine assets and technology portfolio to enable the delivery of maintenance services throughout the region.


  • TE SubCom is currently engaged in deploying the Hawaiki Submarine Cable, a 14,000 km trans-Pacific cable system that will link Australia and New Zealand to the mainland U.S. and Hawaii and American Samoa. New Zealand's Hawaiki Cable announced in 2013 that it had awarded a turnkey supply and installation contract to TE SubCom to build the cable system.
  • The 100 Gbit/s-enabled Hawaiki cable system will support capacity of up to 10 Tbit/s per fibre pair on the Australia/New-Zealand to U.S. route, while a number of Pacific Islands along the route will be able to connect to the main trunk.

TE SubCom introduces eLMS fault tracking and performance monitoring

TE SubCom, a TE Connectivity company and a developer and supplier of undersea communications technology, has announced the availability of eLMS (enhanced line monitoring system), its new customisable solution designed to enable continuous tracking of fault conditions and cable performance.

Enhancements to TE SubCom's line monitoring functionality allow cable operators to detect changes in cable performance without the need to interpret raw data, delivering straightforward results and ensuring efficient transmission.

Offering an all-optical line monitoring system that requires no active undersea components, the new eLMS technology will be included in all of SubCom's Open Cable systems and is scheduled to be launched along with a fully-contracted cable system in the fourth quarter of 2017.

SubCom's new eLMS solution is designed to provide improved performance compared with traditional solutions, including:

1.         Enhanced resolution, enabling detection of smaller span loss and pump power changes.

2.         Graphical user interface providing visual representation of wet plant parameters over time and versus repeater location.

3.         Alarm generation based on changes in loss, pump and amplifier parameters, with configurable thresholds.

TE SubCom noted that the new line monitoring equipment (LME) signal interpretation capability within eLMS is intended to eliminate the need for cable operators to manually sift through high loss loopback data utilising enhanced Automatic Signature Analysis (eASA) to detect changes in round-trip span loss and repeater output power, including from multiple terminal locations.



  • TE SubCom launched its Open Cables model in 2015, and in November 2016 announced with Ciena an alliance designed to enable open submarine cable networking solutions spanning both wet plant and dry plant.

TE SubCom Carries 70.4 Tbit/s over 7,600 km using C+L

TE SubCom, a TE Connectivity company and provider of subsea communications technology, announced that it has demonstrated what it claims is a new record transmission capacity of 70.4 Tbit/s over a distance of 7,600 km.

The record transmission utilised SubCom's newly available C+L technology, which features amplifiers delivering nearly 10 THz of usable optical bandwidth, a transmission line designed to minimise noise accumulation and enhance performance, a new transmission format based on multi-dimensional coded modulation with hybrid probabilistic and geometrical constellation shaping, and digital signal processing providing mulitple stages of non-linear compensation.

SubCom announced earlier this year that it would deploy C+L technology in an undersea cable that it had started manufacturing in late 2016. SubCom's C+L is designed to effectively double the available transmission bandwidth of the repeater compared to the same number of fibre pairs utilising traditional C-band technology. As half the number of fibre pairs are needed compared to a C-band repeater, the C+L technology can enable higher performance and more cost effective submarine systems.

TE SubCom announced in January that it had begun manufacturing of C+L optical transmission technology, designed to provide cable system operators with ultra-wide, low-latency transmission performance and effectively doubling available bandwidth and capacity per fibre pair.

The C+L technology leverages a second length of erbium-doped fibre in undersea repeaters that provides both amplification and support for wavelengths on the long wavelength side of the traditional C-band for telecommunications applications. TE SubCom stated at that time that it was manufacturing cable with the new technology for a contracted system scheduled to launch in 2018. The company noted that a trans-Atlantic cable with eight fibre pairs equipped with C+L technology would be able to deliver capacity of up to 325 Tbit/s.

The results of the TE SubCom transmission technology demonstration were announced at the recent OFC conference in Los Angeles.

TE SubCom Selected for MAREA Submarine Cable

TE SubCom will served as the system supply partner for the new MAREA submarine cable across the Atlantic Ocean, which is backed by Facebook and Microsoft.

TE SubCom said it has completed the route survey and begun manufacture of the system at its facility in Newington, New Hampshire. The parties are on track to begin laying cable using TE SubCom’s cable installation ships next year, with a scheduled completion date of October 2017.

Microsoft and Facebook to Build 160 Tbps Transatlantic Cable

Microsoft and Facebook will jointly fund a new transatlantic cable system linking Virginia Beach, Virginia to Bilbao, Spain.

The MAREA cable, which will be managed by Telxius, Telefónica’s new infrastructure company, will feature eight fiber pairs and an initial estimated design capacity of 160 Tbps. The new 6,600 km submarine cable system will take a more southern route than other transatlantic cables, which mostly connect northern Europe to the New York/New Jersey region.

Construction is set to begin in August 2016 with completion targeted for October 2017.

“In order to better serve our customers and provide the type of reliable and low-latency connectivity they deserve, we are continuing to invest in new and innovative ways to continuously upgrade both the Microsoft Cloud and the global Internet infrastructure,” said Frank Rey, director, global network acquisition, Microsoft Corp. “This marks an important new step in building the next generation infrastructure of the Internet.”

Hibernia Cites Progress with Trans-Atlantic Express Cable

Three ships are now in the water laying Hibernia Networks' new, high-capacity, Trans-Atlantic Express Cable. The company announced that the Express cable project is on schedule to launch commercial services in September 2015.

Hibernia Express utilizes a 6-fiber-pair submarine cable, with a portion of the fibers optimized for lowest latency and a portion optimized for 100X100 Gpbs design capacity. The total cross-sectional design capacity of the cable will be over 53 Tbps. Hibernia Express will initially launch with 100 Gbps transmission capacity using TE SubCom’s C100 SLTE platform.

Hibernia Express follows the most direct route between the UK and North America, promising to reduce latency by at least 5 milliseconds over existing cables.

Work Begins on Hibernia's "Project Express" Transatlantic Cable

TE SubCom has begun manufacturing work on Hibernia Express, a new 4,600 km cable system designed to provide the lowest-latency fiber path between New York and London.  The transatlantic span will connect Halifax, Nova Scotia and Brean, UK.  Terrestrial fiber will extend connectivity to the major metro areas.

Hibernia Express will initially launch with 100 Gbps transmission capacity using TE SubCom’s C100 SLTE platform. It will be a 6-fiber-pair submarine cable, with a portion of the fibers optimized for lowest latency and a portion optimized for 100x100 Gbps design capacity. The total cross-sectional design capacity of the cable will be over 53 Tbps.
