ECOC22: ColorChip unveils 100G PAM4 400G & 800G transceivers

ColorChip is unveiling a full spectrum of 100G PAM4 400G & 800G optical transceiver and copper cable solutions at this week's the European Conference on Optical Communication conference in Basel, Switzerland.

ColorChip will showcase its 400G and 800G optical transceivers and copper cables including Direct Attach Cable (DAC), Active DAC (ACC), Multi-Mode and Single Mode optical Transceivers, and Active Optical Cable (AOC) covering from 1st mm to 10km. Powered by its proprietary Hairtail+ copper technology and SystemOnGlass technology, ColorChip claims the best cost-performance in the market give the technology advantages over other implementations in the market.

In addition to the datacom connectivity solutions, ColorChip will also introduce AV hybrid and pure fiber USB/HDMI/DisplayPort optical cable product lines for high-performance Audio/Video, AR/VR devices, and medical market where longer reach, minimum RFI/EMI impact, and higher bandwidth is highly preferred.

"The introduction of these products places ColorChip as a front runner in data center transceivers" said Yigal Erza, ColorChip CEO. "ColorChip's advanced technology and world class manufacturing enabled the company to deliver volume production with the capability to expand and scale our offering to partners who are looking for a company with the right capability and global operation scale to strengthen their supply chain security moving forward in the post-pandemic globalization."

ColorChip introduces Hairtail direct attached cable for 50G PAM

Israel-based ColorChip unveiled its Hairtail direct attached cable (DAC) technology, featuring flexibility, bending insensitivity, and the lightest cable for 50G PAM4 applications.

This technology, when being implemented in the QSFP-DD or OSFP form factors which are made with 16 pairs of high-speed cables, may address the conventional DAC field deployment challenges due to the rigidity and rack routing with greater than 30% cost savings.

ColorChip says the unique construction of the cable makes the typical bending radius and bending space required for conventional cable structure 50% less while twisting, bending, and zip-tying the cable demonstrates no signal integrity degradation. A Hairtail 3m QSFP-DD using a 27AWG cable offers at least 1dB margin in both insertion loss and Channel Operating Margin (COM) versus the IEEE 802.3cd. ColorChip has demonstrated the technology at DesignCon 2022 and now in full production for QSFP-DD, OSFP, QSFP56, SFP-DD, DSFP and SFP56 series.

"ColorChip's engineering innovations are driven by customers' feedback from engineering to operation. We always look into places where we may make contributions to help customers build a more robust networking through our connectivity solutions," said Yigal Ezra, the CEO of ColorChip Group. "The Hairtail technology is a great example that we are addressing the challenges that may never show up during the typical technology evaluation and deployment cycle or even initial field deployment. With this technology, we are expecting the total cost saving on the 400G networking copper connectivity would be at least 30% given the filed deployment labor savings, field failure reduction, and field maintenance cost reduction."

ColorChip ramps up production of 100G QSFP28

ColorChip showcased its 100G QSFP28 transceiver products at this week's ECOC 2017 in Sweden.

ColorChip's 100G product family is now in volume production. The company has invested $80M, secured over the past 2 years, to expand the throughput of its industrialized-optics TOSA/ROSA assembly lines in the Israel based facility and to double the optical module integration and testing floor space to 7,000 square feet in Fabrinet.  The devices are based on ColorChip's SystemOnGlass (SOG) TOSA/ROSA platform.

ColorChip said its SystemOnGlassTOSA/ROSA platform can be used for both DML and EML based PAM4 optical engines, providing the pathway to compact, QSFPx-based PAM4 transceivers at data rates of 200G and 400G.

The demo featured a 100G 500m CWDM-Lite datacenter transceiver, accepted by the Open Compute Project (OCP), as well as the MSA compliant 2km CWDM4 and 10km 4WDM-10 offerings.  The 100G transceivers are based on uncooled DML's on the CWDM grid and characterized by typical power consumption of 2.6W, highly compact QSFP28 packaging and a standard Duplex LC optical interconnect.

ColorChip Demonstrates 200G QSFP56 PAM4

ColorChip, a developer of integrated optical components and sub-systems for high speed networking, announced technology demonstrations at OFC 2017 including uncooled CWDM4 DML devices driving both PAM4 and NRZ modulation and packaged in QSFPx form factors; the company also announced volume production of its 100 Gbit/s CWDM4 QSFP28 product.

200 Gbit/s QSFP56 PAM4 with CWDM4 DML

ColorChip presented several demonstrations utilising uncooled CWDM4 DML technology, including the exhibition of 200 Gbit/s PAM4 featuring TOSA and ROSA based on the company's patented SystemOnGlass platform and leveraging field-proven 40/100 Gbit/s deployments, with extension beyond 400 Gbit/s.

ColorChip noted that the link demonstrates the building blocks that can enable a compact, low power 200 Gbit/s PAM4 transceiver using the CWDM4 grid, packaged in a compact QSFP56 form factor and with a standard duplex LC optical interface.

2 x 100 Gbit/s CWDM4 in QSFP-DD

ColorChip is also showing a 2 x 100 Gbit/s 'two in a box' solution based on its SystemOnGlass technology implementing an 8-channel TOSA and ROSA to create a dual CWDM4 transceiver in QSFP-DD or OSFP form factor. At OFC the 8 channel optical engines, which include dual embedded CWDM4 multiplexers, enable a 2 x 100 Gbit/s CWDM4 QSFP-DD transceiver with 8 x 25 Gbit/s NRZ electrical interface and dual duplex-LC optical connectors.

Mass production of 100 Gbit/s CWDM4 QSFP28

ColorChip also announced volume production of its 100 Gbit/s CWDM4 OCP-accepted transceiver, which offers an optical interconnect with low power consumption of 2.6 W and delivering reach of 500 metres, which can be extended to 10 km. Provided in the 4WDM-10 MSA specification, the transceiver targets inter-data centre and campus connectivity applications.

Manufacturing expansion

In order to meet growing demand for data centre networking, ColorChip stated that it has completed $60 million in funding over the past 18 months to support a significant expansion of its industrialised-optics TOSA/ROSA assembly lines in Israel. The company has also partnered with contract manufacturer Fabrinet for the optical module integration and final testing.

ColorChip stated that over the past 6 months, it has doubled production floor space to 20,000 sq feet and increased head count to more than 300 employees.
