AMS-IX breaks 11 Tbps peak traffic record

On Sunday, 16-Oct-2022 at around 20:00 local time in Amsterdam, AMS-IX set a new Internet record: a traffic peak of 11 Tbps across the exchange.

ASM-IX said its the new peak traffic is foremost a result of the growth of the platform in Amsterdam. Many networks upgraded their port capacity last months to facilitate the exchange of larger traffic volumes. Moreover, the new peak is also a result of seasonal factors that influence the behaviour of Internet users. Internet users spend more time indoors on the Internet during the cold autumn days and on Sundays, people tend to have more time on their hands to use Internet services.

AMS-IX  was close to 11 Tbits for some time, as in January this year the Network Operation Center of AMS-IX already clocked the exchange on 10.95 Tbps. The good weather as well as the end of the strict COVID-lockdowns meant that Internet traffic growth remained at the same level. Internet use grows worldwide with about 20% on a yearly basis, with an exception in 2020 during the pandemic when the Internet usage grew worldwide by roughly 40%.

AMS-IX CEO Peter van Burgel: “The digitalisation of our society continues, and this is reflected by the growth of our platform. I’d like to thank all the connected members and customers for their trust in our services. We are aware of our vital role in the functioning of the Internet.”

AMS-IX hits 10 Tbps peak traffic record

AMS-IX (Amsterdam Internet Exchange), one of the largest Internet Exchanges in the world, has reached a new traffic milestone. On the evening of 07-April-2021 at around 22:00 PM, AMS-IX measured a traffic peak of 10,012 Terabit per second.

Internet traffic is surging for some time now due to the pandemic. Governments all over the world are taking lockdown measures restricting people’s movements and forcing them to work from home and spend their evenings indoors.

In March and November last year AMS-IX reached the milestones of 8 and 9 Terabit per second. The curfew and the bad weather in the Netherlands have led to this new traffic peak of 10 Terabit per second. Many connected networks have upgraded their port capacity to handle extra traffic volume.

“The pandemic has resulted in Internet growth that makes us go back to the end of the 90s. Last year Internet volume exchanged over AMS-IX grew over 35% and we see the same pattern for this year. We live in uncertain times, but you can be sure that Internet traffic keeps on growing,” says AMS-IX CEO Peter van Burgel.

AMS-IX says it is well capable of handling the traffic growth and is even able to handle traffic volume if it was the double over night. Moreover, AMS-IX invested in the capacity of the platform and added more 100G-ports. The platform currently has a port-capacity that enables 42 Terabit per second. Over 885 networks are connected to the Amsterdam interconnection hub, 75% of them are of European origin.

AMS-IX deploys Pluribus to federate geographically distributed switches

The Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX) has deployed Pluribus Networks’ Netvisor ONE operating system and Adaptive Cloud Fabric, along with Dell EMC Open Networking hardware, as part of a multi-site network modernization project.

The installation creates an SDN-controlled network fabric that federates together a large number of geographically distributed switches to appear as one logical switch, radically simplifying network operations.

Pluribus said its controllerless architecture leverages the processing power inside the switches that are already deployed, distributing intelligence to every switch in the network. This distributed approach to automation lowers costs by eliminating the expense of multiple controllers while improving performance. AMS-IX network operators often move around from site to site, and now, from any switch, the AMS-IX team can see the entire fabric, troubleshoot the entire fabric or update policy across the fabric. This new level of automation allows AMS-IX to better serve customers while making their own operations even more efficient and cost-effective.

AMS-IX also benefits from Pluribus Insight Analytics, which leverages embedded Netvisor monitoring telemetry and packet flow data sources to enable pervasive visibility across the network, eliminating the need for expensive probes or complex monitoring overlay networks. With end-to-end visibility into all connections that traverse the entire data center fabric, AMS-IX can analyze and compare actual versus desired performance and implement corrective actions, such as changes to policy or rerouting traffic to implement on-demand changes to the infrastructure.

“Innovation and high-performance services are the foundation of Amsterdam Internet Exchange; it’s what they built their reputation on, and why they’ve led the interconnect market for 25 years,” said Kumar Srikantan, Chief Executive Officer of Pluribus Networks. “This focus on innovation and new approaches led the team to understand the compelling advantages that can be realized once the software is disaggregated from the hardware.  Their shift to open networking, with Pluribus software driving automation across the entire fabric, is now delivering the agility and flexibility they need to meet customer requirements well into the future.”

AMS-IX Extends its Bay Area Presence

The AMS-IX Bay Area Internet Exchange has established a presence at Hurricane Electric’s Fremont 2 data center.

AMS-IX Bay Area is a neutral and independent Internet Exchange, distributed across four data centers in the San Francisco Bay Area. This platform is OIX certified and modeled after AMS-IX in Amsterdam, providing a professional, high-quality, non-blocking peering service for all types of IP traffic, from regular IP data to Voice over IP, mobile Internet traffic and video.

“I am very pleased that our latest expansion is with Hurricane Electric, a well-established provider of carrier-neutral colocation services,” said Job Witteman, Chief Executive Officer at AMS-IX. “Our newest point-of-presence at Hurricane Electric’s Fremont 2 data center will have significant and lasting benefits for both Hurricane Electric’s customers and the other customers of AMS-IX Bay Area.”

“This expansion helps us to improve our connectivity offering since it will give our customers the ability to directly exchange traffic with other members of the exchange, enabling lower latency and improved performance,” said Mike Leber, President of Hurricane Electric.

AMS-IX Opens in Telx's NYC2 Data Center

The Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX) has established a Point of Presence (PoP) within Telx's NYC2 data center facility at 111 8th Avenue in New York.

AMS-IX New York provides a physical platform, deployed within five data center facilities, where parties can meet to exchange internet-related traffic with one another. Together with Telx’s growing customer base and interconnection capabilities, the two companies are able to offer reliable, fast, and cost-effective internet peering services to their end-users and business customers within a secure environment.

This partnership enables AMS-IX New York and Telx to provide customers with additional peering opportunities to other connected parties on the platform, including those customers that are located in other data center facilities, such as nearby NYC1 at 60 Hudson Street and NYC3 at 32 Avenue of the Americas. These two facilities, along with NYC2, comprise the “The NYC Trifecta” in Manhattan, offering seamless connectivity and providing small, medium, and enterprise businesses with access to the same network-rich interconnections regardless of their location. In addition, the Trifecta acts as a central hub for leading global service providers to access physical connection points to the world’s telecommunications networks.
