Netrake Introduces VoIP VPN Interconnection Service

Netrake, a start-up based in Plano, Texas, introduced a secure VoIP VPN interconnection service for carriers that offer multimedia services to their enterprise customers. Netrake has developed a Session Controller that addresses several crucial functions for VoIP, such as firewall traversal, network translation, media anchoring, quality of service mediation, session detail records, and session admission control.


Netrake said today's MPLS VPN infrastructure requires all inter-enterprise VoIP calls to traverse the PSTN for origination and termination. Netrake's nCite Session Controller eliminates the need for inter-enterprise VoIP traffic to traverse the PSTN, enabling all intra- and inter-enterprise IP traffic to stay on the IP network. In this way, carriers require fewer costly media gateway ports, while at the same time realizing the efficiencies inherent to IP traffic.


Netrake's nCite Session Controller connects to the provider edge MPLS router via gigabit Ethernet interfaces. The provider edge router sets an 802.1q VLAN tag, which correlates to an enterprise VPN within the MPLS network, on all packets routed to the nCite. The nCite then performs several critical tasks, such as: address translation, security, call routing, billing, call admission control and QoS mediation.

  • In August 2003, Netrake added H.323 and SIP-T support to its line of VoIP session controllers. Currently in trial deployments, Netrake is delivering H.323 to H.323 and H.323 to SIP inter-working as well as SIP-T mediation for a number of tier one carriers. Netrake supports all H.323 versions (v1, v2, and v3) as well as inter-working between them. Netrake also interoperates with the following vendor products: Avaya Definity, Nortel Meridian, Cisco CM, BTS, 2500, 2600, 3600, and AS5300 series.
