Nortel Networks Evolves its DMS-10 Switch for Rural Telcos

Nortel Networks announced an expansion of its service and support program for its DMS-10 voice switch, which is deployed by many rural, independent operating companies (IOCs). The program includes a number of software enhancements such as Simultaneous Ringing, Telemarketer Call Screening, and other new, revenue-generating services. With Simultaneous Ringing, residential subscribers can have incoming calls automatically routed to as many as five different telephone numbers to help reduce missed calls. Telemarketer Call Screening challenges unidentified callers, requiring them to assert that they are not telemarketers before allowing these calls to be completed. The latest DMS-10 software release will also support interworking with service nodes like Application Peripheral from Innovative Systems, positioning carriers to drive additional new revenues with services like Find Me, Click to Dial, and Budget Toll with Disconnect. Nortel Networks said its new initiative would also position carriers to migrate to fully-packetized networks at their own pace. More than 700 customers have deployed DMS-10 in North America alone, representing more than six million subscriber lines.
