Lantern Communications, a start-up based in San Jose, California, announced Ethernet VLAN stacking and Cross-Node Protection Switching for its Metro Packet Switch, which is a flow-based Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) platform that supports both 2.5 Gbps and 10 Gbps ring topologies. Ethernet VLAN stacking enables a service provider to create an Ethernet VPN that tunnels a customer's VLANs across the wide area, preserving the integrity of the customer's Ethernet traffic. Lantern's Cross-Node Protection Switching uses IEEE 802.3ad link aggregation technology to protect Ethernet services in the event of equipment (port, module or node) or fiber failures. Lantern said these features have been successfully tested with switches from Extreme Networks and Cisco Systems.
