Corning Announces Bendable "nanoStructures" Optical Fiber

Corning Incorporated announced a "nanoStructures" optical fiber design that allows the cabled fiber to be bent around very tight corners with virtually no signal loss. This is especially useful in FTTH deployments in apartment building because exiting optical fiber installations lose signal strength and effectiveness when bent around corners and routed through a building.

Corning described the nano fiber design as a breakthrough technology because it changes the way light travels through a fiber. The result is fiber that is 100 times more bendable that existing single-mode fiber. The new fiber also enables simpler and more aesthetically pleasing designs for the cable, hardware and equipment used in the deployment.

"This is a game-changing technology for telecommunications applications," said Peter F. Volanakis, president and chief operating officer at Corning. "We have developed an optical fiber cable that is as rugged as copper cable but with all of the bandwidth benefits of fiber. By making fundamental changes in the way light travels in the fiber, we were able to create a new optical fiber that is over 100 times more bendable than standard fibers."

Corning said it has been collaborating with Verizon Communications on this technology. In February of this year, Corning and Verizon commissioned a joint working team to solve the problems of multiple dwelling unit installation using this new fiber solution.

Corning plans to introduce a full suite of optical fiber, cable and hardware and equipment solutions based on its nanoStructures technology this fall.

IEEE 802.3 Working Group Targets 40 Gbps Ethernet, 100 Gbps Ethernet, Energy-Efficient Ethernet

The Ethernet Alliance reported that the IEEE 802.3 working group has accepted project authorization requests (PARs) for the next generation of Ethernet technologies, including 40 Gigabit Ethernet, 100 Gigabit Ethernet and Energy-Efficient Ethernet.

The Higher Speed Study Group (HSSG) was formed in July 2006, and its proposal envisions a single project encompassing a 40 Gigabit Ethernet (40GbE) rate for server and storage applications and a 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100GbE) rate for network aggregation. The Energy-Efficient Ethernet Study Group (EEESG) was formed in November 2006, and its proposal envisions a protocol to permit power savings in Ethernet networking equipment.

The HSSG investigated the needs and requirements for the next speed of Ethernet technology. A key finding was a divergence in bandwidth demand between the networking and computing industries. It was discovered 100GbE would likely best meet the demands of the next generation Internet backbone and network aggregation points. In enterprise computing, 40GbE better matches the bandwidth demand driven by server technologies such as host bus interfaces, memory speeds, and multi-core processing.

The HSSG has established a set of objectives including copper and optical physical layer (PHY) interfaces tailored for the intended applications. The 40GbE rate includes PHY solutions to cover distances up to 100 meters, and the 100GbE rate includes PHY solutions to cover distances up to 40 kilometers.

Other design objectives include preserving the 802.3 / Ethernet frame by utilizing the 802.3 Ethernet MAC;

The EEESG investigated the technical feasibility and market potential for a protocol to change the link speed on-the-fly to realize power savings in under-utilized links. The EEESG has established a set of objectives to include unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) copper cabling links and backplane Ethernet links.

The Ethernet Alliance is an industry group whose mission is to accelerate industry adoption and remove barriers to market entry by providing a cohesive, market-responsive industry voice on IEEE 802 Ethernet projects.

Netflix Sees Decline in Online DVD Subscribers in Q2

Netflix ended Q2 with approximately 6,742,000 total subscribers to its online DVD rental service, down by about 55,000 from the end of the previous quarter, compared to an increase of 303,000 for the same period of 2006 and an increase of 481,000 for the first quarter of 2007.

Gross subscriber additions for the quarter totaled 1,028,000, representing 4 percent year-over-year decline from 1,070,000 gross subscriber additions in the second quarter of 2006 and 32 percent quarter-over-quarter decline from 1,520,000 gross subscriber additions in the first quarter of 2007.

Of the 6,742,000 total subscribers at quarter end, 98 percent, or 6,609,000, were paid subscribers. The other 2 percent, or 133,000, were free subscribers.

Netflix cited intense competition. Earlier, the company cut prices in two of its monthly subscription plans.

CTIA Blasts Google Proposal

CTIA, the international association for the wireless telecommunications industry, blasted Google's proposal for the upcoming auction of wireless spectrum in the 700 MHz band.

In a statement, CTIA President Steve Largent said "Google's letter to the FCC this morning highlights the Internet giant's scheme to have the 700 MHz auction rigged with special conditions in its favor. If Google is willing to commit almost $5 billion dollars for spectrum that it wants encumbered with various requirements, then let it win that spectrum in a competitive auction and choose that business model. Google and its allies, with their collective market capitalization approaching half a trillion dollars, don't need a government handout at taxpayers' expense. The competitive wireless industry welcomes all new entrants, but no company should be able to buy a custom-fit government regulation that suits their particular business plan. Consumers should decide if they're right, not the federal government."http://www.ctia.org

Ericsson's Sales Rise 8% in Q2

Ericsson reported Q2 net sales of SEK 47.6 billion, an increase of 8% driven by organic growth and acquired sales. Organic growth amounted to 6%. Ericsson said that because the US dollar has continued to weaken, sales growth has been affected negatively.

"We continue to outpace the market," said Carl-Henric Svanberg, President and CEO of Ericsson. "Sales showed an encouraging year-over-year increase this quarter, primarily driven by Asia Pacific. Europe, Middle East and Africa were softer while we see improving trends in the Americas. Margins were stable with improved cash generation."

On another note, Ericsson said the total number of mobile subscriptions worldwide has now reached three billion, a milestone for our industry.

Google Sets Conditions for Bidding on 700MHz Spectrum, Plans $4.6 Billion Bid

Google declared its intention to bid in the upcoming auction for 700 MHz spectrum if the FCC adopts a framework requiring greater competition and consumer choice. Google outlined four criteria that it believes should be cornerstones of FCC policy regardless of who wins the spectrum at auction. Specifically, Google encouraged the FCC to require the adoption of four types of "open" platforms as part of the license conditions:

  • Open applications: Consumers should be able to download and utilize any software applications, content, or services they desire;

  • Open devices: Consumers should be able to utilize a handheld communications device with whatever wireless network they prefer;

  • Open services: Third parties (resellers) should be able to acquire wireless services from a 700 MHz licensee on a wholesale basis, based on reasonably nondiscriminatory commercial terms; and

  • Open networks: Third parties (like internet service providers) should be able to interconnect at any technically feasible point in a 700 MHz licensee's wireless network.

Google also publicly stated that should the FCC adopt all four license conditions requested above, Google intends to commit a minimum of $4.6 billion to bidding in the upcoming 700 MHz auction. http://www.google.com
