Omantel deploys 400GbE DCI service with Ciena

Oman Telecommunications has launched a 400GbE DCI service utilizing Ciena's Data Center Interconnect solution.

Omantel’s 400GbE DCI service runs on Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platform powered by WaveLogic 5 Extreme coherent optics and is managed by the Manage, Control and Plan (MCP) domain controller. The Ciena solution gives Omantel the ability to deploy 100G and, for the first time, 400GbE DCI connectivity over wavelengths up to 800 Gbps to accommodate increasing network traffic.

“Our vision is for Oman to be the leading gateway to the region and beyond. We are bringing this mission to life, and a recent example is our new 400GbE data center interconnect service that we developed with Ciena. At Omantel, considering the numerous benefits on technical, commercial and social levels, we acted upon a clear strategy for data centers by partnering with Equinix, the world’s digital infrastructure company, to launch MC1, the premier carrier-neutral data center in MENA. We are now taking the next step by introducing an innovative new DCI service, the first of its kind in the region,” said Sohail Qadir, Vice President of Wholesale at Omantel.

He added, “Crucially, we were able to launch the service sustainably—without deploying additional platforms—doubling wavelength transmission capacity from 400G to 800G and improving overall fiber capacity leveraging our existing footprint. What this means for our customers is faster delivery of on-demand cloud applications and content with the highest quality.”

Oman Australia Cable nears completion

The final cable landing for the 10,000km Oman Australia Cable (OAC) was completed in Barka, Oman, marking a major milestone for the project.OAC, which is now expected to be ready for service in July 2022, is set to become the only undersea cable to avoid the notorious Malacca Straits and is Australia’s first express undersea cable to EMEA, improving connectivity and resiliency between the regions.SUBCO’s Founder Bevan Slattery said “I am incredibly...

Omantel deploys Ciena's 800G coherent optical

Oman Telecommunications has deployed Ciena  WaveLogic 5 Extreme 800G coherent optical technology to connect data centres, submarine cable landing stations and telecom exchanges in various regions across the Sultanate.

Specifically, Omantel is using Ciena’s WaveLogic 5 Extreme (WL5e) programmable 800G technology over a 6500 reconfigurable line system leveraging optical control plane for improved resiliency. Ciena says WL5e provides a step-function improvement in network performance and economic benefits, doubling wavelength capacity and halving space/power requirements compared to previous technology generations. Additionally, Omantel is using Ciena’s Manage, Control and Plan (MCP) domain controller.

Samy Al Ghassany, Chief Operating Officer at Omantel, said: “Amidst the fast digital transformation in Oman, in line with the Sultanate’s Vision 2040 goals, we are witnessing a surge in bandwidth demand. Ciena’s 800G technology will help pave the way for enhanced high-speed network capabilities for our clients across the Sultanate on various domains like 5G, wholesale, cloud, ICT and IoT services. ”

Jamie Jefferies, Vice President and General Manager, International, Ciena, added: “As Omantel navigates its journey to implement 5G and other advanced technologies, there is a need for a network that can quickly adapt to fluctuating bandwidth demands. Ciena’s 800G technology not only helps Omantel prepare for the explosion of data that will come from 5G, but also drives greater network economics, reach and power efficiency.”

Omantel picks Ericsson for 5G

Omantel has selected Ericsson to support the Sultanate’s ongoing 5G radio access network (RAN) deployment plans in a multi-year partnership. Specifically, Ericsson will support Omantel’s commercial 5G deployment at key locations across Oman, including Salalah, Nizwa and Sur. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The contract covers hardware and software products and solutions from the Ericsson Radio System portfolio, including Advanced Antenna Systems and 3GPP standards-based 5G New Radio (NR).

Fadi Pharaon, President of Ericsson Middle East and Africa, says: “We are delighted to further strengthen our relationship with Omantel to bring the best possible commercial 5G experience to their customers. Ericsson is leading the way in terms of 5G deployments across the globe and we look forward to making 5G experiences a reality in the Sultanate.

Oman Australia Cable enters contract-in-force status

A new Oman Australia Cable project has entered contract in force status (CIF). The developer, SUB.CO, expects final system connection to be completed in December 2021.

The OAC cable system design is a three (3) fibre pair system with an option to upgrade to four (4) fibre pairs based upon final demand and will span approximately 9,700 km, with branching units designed to potentially extend the system into Salalah, Oman and Djibouti in the future. It is the only cable along this route.

David Coughlan, CEO of SubCom noted: "Once deployed, OAC will enable high-capacity, low-latency transmission and open a much-sought route between Australia and EMEA. SubCom is very pleased to be moving forward with this project and we are confident in our ability to implement what will be a powerful and reliable system on behalf of SUB.CO."
