Octasic Introduces Mini Base Station with 20km Reach

Octasic introduced its newest Small Cell platform supporting all cellular standards: GSM/EDGE, WCDMA, HSPA, and LTE.

The OCTBTS 3000 is an OEM-ready platform that includes baseband hardware and software, an RF front end, and a power-efficient application processor. The complete platform fits into a compact 70x75 mm form factor.

Capacity ranges from 8 to 32 active users across the various cellular standards. Applications include: network extension for capacity and coverage, Network in a Box (NIB), emergency response networks, military networks, C4ISR, human portable BTS, surveillance, and many more.

OCTBTS 3000 highlights:

  • Wide reach: Octasic’s OCT2224W DSP enables a cell range of 20 km. A single Small Cell can replace multiple limited-coverage NodeBs and avoid handover between them and complex backhaul architecture.
  • Carrier Agility: The OCTBTS 3000’s dynamically re-programmable radios can operate from 400 MHz to 3 GHz with bandwidth from 200 kHz to 20 MHz. The same platform can be used in all operator networks worldwide, or for custom waveforms and frequency bands.
  • Complete PHY Software: Octasic’s flexiPHY software offers 3GPP-compliant physical layers for GSM/EDGE, WCDMA, HSPA, and LTE, eliminating the need for OEMs to develop the baseband portion of the design.
  • Customizable: Using Octasic’s comprehensive development toolset, Opus Studio, OEMs can enhance the flexiPHY software or develop their own proprietary PHY.

“Customers are asking for more compact and power efficient solutions as the demand for ubiquitous wireless coverage is exploding,” said Emmanuel Gresset, VP Software Defined Radio at Octasic. “The OCTBTS 3000 is a key building block that allows vendors to focus their efforts on developing ground-breaking applications for this emerging class of base stations.”

Octasic Enables 20 km Small Cell Radius

Octasic released an updated version of its flexiPHY HSPA software, adding support for a cell radius of 20 kilometers.

Octasic’s flexiPHY software, which runs on Octasic’s OCT2224W base station devices and Octasic’s small cell platform products such as the OCTBTS2000 and OCTBTS4000, offers 3GPP-compliant physical layers for GSM, UMTS, and LTE, integrated with leading RNC and Iuh stack vendor products. This eliminates the need for OEMs to develop the baseband and stack portion of their design.

Octasic noted that small cells with a large radius could prove especially useful in rural areas or for applications such as emergency networks, search and rescue, public safety, and military deployments.

Octasic Announces New Small Cell Platform

Octasic introduced its newest Small Cell platform, the OCTBTS 4000, which provides OEMs with baseband hardware and software, three RF front ends, and an application processor. The OCTBTS 4000 allows simultaneous 2G, 3G, and 4G operation in a compact (170x170 mm) form factor with passive cooling. Capacity ranges from 16 to 100 active users across multiple cellular standards and channels.

Featuring Octasic’s OCT2224W baseband processor and a power efficient application processor,  the OCTBTS 4000 enables applications such as: traditional small cell deployment by operators, network extension for capacity and coverage, Network in a Box (NIB), emergency response networks, military networks, human portable BTS, surveillance, Internet caching and many more.

To run these advanced applications, the OCTBTS 4000 supports COM Express® modules ensuring a broad range of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) options. The OCTBTS 4000 will initially be delivered with the Intel® AtomTM processor N2600.

“The OCTBTS product line is growing as the demand for small cells is increasing dramatically. In addition to conventional network deployments, new applications are emerging in military networks, search and rescue and surveillance,” said Emmanuel Gresset, VP Software Defined Radio. “The OCTBTS 4000 provides a unique combination of flexibility and time to market for OEMs. They can quickly add value at the application level to a high capacity and versatile Small Cell platform that is ready for production”

The OCTBTS 4000 will be available from Octasic in July 2013.

Octasic Intros Industry’s First Dual-Mode Small Cell Platform

Octasic introduced its newest Small Cell platform, the SDR4000, supporting simultaneous multi-standard operation over a cell range of 20 km.

Octasic's OEM-ready platform includes baseband hardware and software, three RF front ends, and an application processor.  It enables simultaneous 2G, 3G, and 4G operation in a compact (170x170 mm) form factor that can be powered over Ethernet with passive cooling. Capacity ranges from 16 to 100 active users across multiple cellular standards.

A key feature is that the SDR4000’s dynamically re-programmable radios can operate from 700 MHz to 2.7 GHz with bandwidth from 200 kHz to 20 MHz. The same platform can be used in all operator networks worldwide or for custom waveforms and frequency bands.

Octasic’s flexiPHY software offers 3GPP compliant physical layers for GSM, UMTS, and LTE, eliminating the need for OEMs to develop the baseband portion of
the design.  In addition, Octasic's Opus Studion development toolset lets OEMs enhance the flexiPHY software or enable them to develop their own proprietary PHY.

The design features three radio front-ends, enabling it to support continuously active network listen during cellular operation. This enables advanced Radio Resource
Management (RRM) strategies for powerful Self Organizing Network (SON) capabiliti

For the application processor, Octasic has selected the Intel Atom processor.  Specifically, Octasic is using the Intel Atom processor N2600. A single processor can run the UMTS RNC stack as well as the LTE Layer 2 and 3, supporting 100 active users. Furthermore, Intel QuickAssist Technology provides easy-to-use software for data-plane acceleration, while supporting migration across Intel-based devices.

“Small Cell technology is creating disruption in the conventional basestation landscape as well as enabling innovative new applications. Vendors are moving very quickly to stake claims in these new markets,” said Fabio Gambacorta, VP Sales and Business Development at Octasic.
