NTT Electronics spins out fJscaler to focus on ICs for coherent optics

NTT Electronics has established a majority-owned subsidiary called fJscaler to focus on differentiated electronics integrated circuits (ICs) that powers its 100G+ coherent DSP product portfolio.

fJscaler, a new majority owned subsidiary of NTT Electronics, is a fabless semiconductor group designing high-speed, high-performance ICs for coherent optics, as well as several related interconnects in the optical communications market needing PAM4, Direct Detect and other modulation schemes. The company's mission is "to scale femto-Joule optical communication with digitally assisted analog signal processing preserving low latency of fiber optics interconnects."

fJscaler is based in Beaverton, Oregon.

The new subsidiary brings a rich talent pool and history of delivering critical components at that PHY layer. fJscaler will continue mass production of its linear driver and TIA for 100-400G ZR/ZR+ applications, and will immediately begin executing a roadmap to service the next generation of coherent optics as well as many other growth markets for coherent optical communications.

According to NTT Electronics, “fJscaler is both strategic and fundamental to our growth roadmaps with 100G and beyond in coherent optics to create high-value differentiated solutions with time-to-market and performance focus, noted Osamu Ishida, EVP of Global Strategy at NTT Electronics. “We also see value in this subsidiary creating components for other leading coherent solutions in the market as a merchant semiconductor group, enabling economies of scale that benefit the overall market.”, he added.

According to fJscaler, “Today marks the exciting new phase for this highly experienced team that has delivered over a billion ICs in production, from 1G to now 400G linear coherent optics. We’re a fully functional team with IC design, development, and production - end-to-end capabilities in the United States, bringing an edge to NTT Electronics and our other customers,” noted Jan Filip, fJscaler CEO and President and added “We’re committed to continue serving NTT Electronics and strengthen the valued partnership this team has formed for many years and well into the future.”

NTT Electronics announces 64GBaud coherent DSP

NTT Electronics (NEL) has begun sampling a 64GBaud high-performance coherent DSP for DWDM optical transport systems. The DSP core leverages Broadcom’s 16nm CMOS fin-FET high-speed mixed-signal technologies which enhances per-lambda capacity by two-to-three times up to 600Gbps/λ.

NEL's new DSP supports flexible line capacities by combining multiple Baud-rates and modulation-formats, from 100Gbps/λ by 32GBaud QPSK to industry-first 600Gbps/λ by 64GBaud 64QAM.

The company says it is able to achieve a range of per-fiber DWDM capacity, from 5Tbps for tens of thousands of kilometers Ultra Long Haul (ULH) to over 30Tbps for 120km ZR transmission reaches, and further doubling the capacity by using both C-band and L-band. Real-time coherent processing at 64GBaud enables thousands-of-kilometers LH transport at 200Gbps/λ by Dual-Polarization (DP) QPSK, hundreds-of-kilometers Metro transport at 400Gbps/λ by DP 16QAM, or 120km ZR transport at 600Gbps/λ by DP 64QAM.

“Every Service Provider needs to maximize fiber capacity to meet increasing bandwidth demand,” said Haruhiko Ichino, NEL Executive Vice President and General Manager of Broadband System & Device Business Group. “We are strongly committed to be a pioneer in the coherent DSP innovation and to provide merchant-silicon solutions for cost-effective upgrades in LH, Metro, and shorter-reach data-center-interconnect (DCI) applications.”

Commercial production is expected in the second half of 2018.

NTT Electronics Delivers 20nm Low-Power Coherent DSP

NTT Electronics (NEL) announced the commercial release of its second generation, 20nm low-power coherent DSP for use in high-port-density 100G metro transport systems. The device was developed by NEL in collaboration with Broadcom.

The new NLD0640 Gen2 LP-DSP features integrated 100GE transponder capability, full coverage of operation modes such as the lowest power 80-km ZR mode and power-managed metro mode for distances up to 1200km, and digital equalizer compensating electrical signal distortion to-and-from 100G pluggable Analog Coherent Optics (ACO).  The LP-DSP uses Broadcom's signal-processing-enhanced mixed-signal technologies to intensify the coherent processing core, which has already been widely deployed as NEL's first generation 40nm DSP product NLD0629 Gen1 DSP3.

“I am glad to see that our initiative, to make merchant Silicon DSP solution available for every manufacturer, has evolved into this new generation.” said Masahito Tomizawa, Executive Manager of NTT Network Innovation Laboratories. “Digital coherent is an optical communications innovation, not only for enabling 100 Gbps per wavelength, but also for enabling interoperability among multi-source pluggable coherent optics using lower-cost technologies such as compound semiconductor and silicon photonics. One of my laboratories has already confirmed successful interoperability of the new NLD0640 Gen2 LP-DSP not only with multi-source CFP2-ACO’s but also with other CFP-DCO employing its in-house DSP ASIC.”
