IP Infusion's OcNOS validated for TIP's DCSG and Cassini

IP Infusion's OcNOS network operating system, running on Telecom Infra Project’s (TIP) Cassini and Disaggregated Cell Site Gateway (DCSG), has been validated by testing at TIP’s Community Labs at Brazil-based CPqD.

In its trial of TIP’s Cassini and DCSG solutions in extended metro and long-haul scenarios, CPqD found that it was possible to achieve an optical coherent 100/200Gbps transmission over 2,000km without regeneration for long-haul scenarios.

CPqD has been testing and validating open and disaggregated solutions such as DCSG, Cassini, and OpenRAN since opening the TIP Community Lab in Campinas, Brazil in 2018, and were presented by CPqD for the first time at Futurecom in 2019. Since then, CPqD, Padtec, EdgeCore Networks, IP Infusion, Lumentum, and Viavi have been running comprehensive testing protocols for different use cases at the lab.

  • Cassini is an open packet and optical transponder that integrates 200GbE switching with Layer-1 optical transport functions as line-card modules, and covers data center interconnect, metro and access backhaul use cases. It is currently the industry’s highest capacity open-sourced white box packet transponder.
  • DCSG is a 1RU fully-featured cell site router with a wide range of Ethernet connectivity options for client and network sides. As a cell site gateway, DCSG supports Layer-2, Layer-3 and MPLS features – with native time synchronization protocols such as IEEE-1588 v2 and Synchronous Ethernet for the mobile base stations.

“IP Infusion is excited to have collaborated with TIP to demonstrate and prove how disaggregation delivers faster innovation and lowers TCO. In this successful trial, our OcNOS® network operating system, running on Cassini and DCSG solutions, proved once again that high capacity and new advanced services can be achieved with disaggregated solutions,” said Atsushi Ogata, President and CEO, IP Infusion.

IP Infusion and Okinawa Open Laboratory test disaggregated networking

IP Infusion has joined Okinawa Open Laboratory (OOL) to help further the adoption of disaggregated networking.

IP Infusion will be working with OOL to verify white box solutions through field trials with various vendors and follow market trends.

The Okinawa Open Laboratory partners with both industry and academia in research and development to promote the practical application and dissemination of next-generation information and communication platform technologies (ICT), including software-defined networking (SDN), network function virtualization (NFV) and cloud computing using open-source software (OSS).

“Our participation with OOL is significant since it will help more companies to take advantage of the benefits of disaggregated networking, such as faster deployments, lower costs and the opportunity to offer more services,” said Atsushi Ogata, CEO and president of IP Infusion. “IP Infusion has a deep understanding in the features and quality required for the industry to develop a standard disaggregated networking platform, which are present in our line of network operating system products.”

“We look forward to working with IP Infusion to field test their disaggregated NOS with our other industry vendors,” said Yukio Ito, chairman, Okinawa Open Laboratory. “Their 20 years of experience in the NOS industry will be of tremendous value to the OOL community.”

IP Infusion releases OS for open packet transponder systems

IP Infusion released its new OcNOS Optical Transport software stack for modular open packet transponder systems designed for data center interconnect, long haul and service provider backhaul use cases.

OcNOS is a network operating system for white box open packet transponder systems. The first available platform for the OcNOS-based solution is the Cassini packet transponder from Edgecore Networks.

Cassini is the industry's highest capacity (3.2T) and first modular open packet transponder, offering a flexible mix of 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) packet switching ports and 100/200 Gbps coherent optical interfaces. The Cassini platform enables DMDM-based long haul transport and supports CFP2 ACO and DCO modules from different vendors which support L2/L3/Multicast features for metro, long haul and data center interconnect use cases. Both packet switching and optical line side can be managed via CLI, SNMP or NETCONF.

“The desire of network operators to control end-to-end solutions and components to achieve operational simplicity and open interfaces is driving the momentum towards open optical networking,” said Atsushi Ogata, CEO, IP Infusion. “The combination of the carrier-grade OcNOS networking operating system and the Cassini packet transponder from Edgecore Networks gives our network customers another example and further shows that IP Infusion is a leading software vendor for service provider network disaggregation.”

“With support for Cassini and DCSG, IP Infusion is well aligned with TIP and helping to drive disaggregated networking to service providers. We are pleased that disaggregated networking has now arrived for optical transport solutions,” said Dave Hutton, Chief Engineer, Telecom Infra Project.

IP Infusion qualifies Inphi's 100G for IPoDWDM

IP Infusion has qualified Inphi's COLORZ 100GbE DWDM Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM4) platform solution on the IP Infusion OcNOS network operating system. Specifically, Inphi’s COLORZ has been qualified across various white box platforms, allowing for a disaggregated networking solution supporting IPoDWDM data center connectivity.

Inphi’s COLORZ enables 100G DWDM for data center customers to connect their data centers within a metro area. COLORZ, which uses PAM4 and advanced silicon photonics, is available in the industry standard form factor QSFP28 and can be plugged directly into an open slot of a switch or router without the need for a separate transport box. COLORZ delivers up to 4 Tbps of bandwidth over a single fiber.

IP Infusion's OcNOS is a modular extensible network OS for white box open networking solutions offering switching and routing protocol support ranging from Layer2, Layer 3 to Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), and APIs/protocols for SDN. OcNOS features hybrid, centralized or distributed network support; scalable, modular high-performance network; and a robust data plane built on merchant silicon.

“Having native COLORZ support available on the IP Infusion OcNOS operating system, will allow customers to deploy cost effective 100G DWDM connectivity using white box platforms and meet their desire for building low cost flexible disaggregated optical network infrastructure,” said Dr. Loi Nguyen, founder, senior vice president, Optical Interconnect at Inphi. “Customers can now de-couple hardware and software in their DWDM network.”

“The qualification of Inphi’s COLORZ will extend the acceptance of white box solutions based OcNOS to a greater customer base allowing multiplexing of high-speed data stream over single fiber and enabling easy scaling of network capacity for DCI,” said Atsushi Ogata, CEO and President of IP Infusion. “Inphi will continue to be a vital partner for us as we continue to expand the NOS functions and support for current and future Inphi and IP Infusion white box solution customers.”
