Arelion adds Vancouver PoP

Arelion  announced a new partnership with eStruxture, the largest Canadian cloud and carrier-neutral data center provider, deploying a fully diverse Point-of-Presence (PoP) at eStruxture’s VAN-2 site in the Harbour Centre Building, the largest carrier hotel in the Vancouver market. 

Arelion’s second fully diverse PoP in the Vancouver market will provide wholesale and enterprise customers with high-speed connectivity to Arelion’s global IP backbone and access to Arelion’s ecosystem of cloud, content and application providers, enabling further growth in Vancouver’s gaming, film and technology markets.

Arelion adds PoP at Equinix in Osaka, Japan

Arelion announced a new Point-of-Presence (PoP) in Equinix’s carrier-neutral data center in Osaka, Japan. The PoP will provide high-speed IP Transit, Cloud Connect, DDoS Mitigation, and Internet Exchange (IX) Connect services to content providers and enterprises across Osaka’s metropolitan area. 

Arelion recently announced global 40G Ethernet Virtual Circuit (VC) availability and will offer this key product in its new PoP to facilitate digital transformation in Asian markets.

Arelion said its new facility will provide customers with the option of a low-latency route towards Europe and the United States on its global IP backbone, AS1299, which is ranked the #1 backbone in Asia by Kentik for its reliability, performance and customer support. Kentik's report also found that AS1299 is the most popular backbone among Japanese businesses.

Arelion launches fiber routes from Texas to Monterrey, Mexico

Arelion (formerly Telia Carrier) announced two new fully diverse routes from the US into Monterrey, Mexico.

Arelion's routes leverage the latest open optical line systems and support multi-vendor 400G wave capability, including Bright ZR+ disaggregated optics, offering resilient local connectivity and flexible high-speed access to content, application and cloud providers in the US.

With the addition of these diverse routes, Arelion provides customers in Mexico with enhanced access to Arelion's number one ranked Internet backbone, AS1299, as well as Arelion's portfolio of leading IP and optical technology services, including high-speed IP Transit, Cloud Connect, Wavelengths, Ethernet and IPX services for service providers, content providers and enterprises.

Further insights into this expansion and Arelion's presence in Mexico:

• Routing south, the routes connect Arelion's Points-of-Presence (PoPs) in McAllen (MDC – MCA2) to Monterrey (Equinix - MO1) and Laredo (VTX) to Monterrey (Neutral Networks Pabellón M).
• Arelion also operates two PoPs in Querétaro that serve Equinix's MX1 and KIO Networks' QRO sites, with two more in Mexico City serving KIO's MEX2 and MEX5 data centers.
• Arelion's latest PoP was opened in Mérida this quarter, serving AiTelecom.

Arelion adds Boston-Secaucus route

Arelion has added a new diverse, high-capacity transmission route connecting Boston to Secaucus, providing its customers with resilient connectivity and fast delivery that bypasses common routes going direct through Long Island and Manhattan. 

By providing backhaul to the Amitié sea cable system through its fifth trans-Atlantic cable route, Arelion establishes Boston as a DWDM service market and empowers companies, including financial services organizations, with diverse connection options and seamless terabit scale capability across multiple cables connecting into landing stations in the US and Europe.

The new route will offer connectivity in the US to Arelion's 150+ Points-of-Presence (PoPs) and EU terrestrial extensions to customer end points. The Amitié cable system is expected to go live in Q2 2023 and has a trans-Atlantic capacity of over 320Tbps, connecting Boston in the US to Slough (UK) and Bordeaux (FR) in Europe.

Arelion's multi-vendor, multi-layer optical transport trial

Arelion completed a series of trials with Acacia and Cisco over multiple, third-party, open line systems. 

On a live fiber route with existing ROADM infrastructure between Hamburg and Copenhagen, Arelion successfully leveraged Acacia Bright 400ZR+ QSFP-DD coherent modules with greater than +1 dBm transmit power between Cisco 8000 and NCS 5700 router platforms. The trial demonstrated the seamless integration of Routed Optical Networking with DWDM transponders carrying wavelength services.

Acacia's Bright 400ZR+ pluggable coherent optical modules can plug into Cisco routers, enabling Arelion's further adoption of the simpler and more scalable architecture of Routed Optical Networking, combining innovations in silicon, optics and routing systems. 

Arelion also highlighted the interworking on brownfield long-haul applications built with third-party optical line systems

Arelion completes 750 km route from Oslo to Esbjerg, Denmark

Arelion completed a new 750 km fiber route from Oslo, Norway to Esbjerg, Denmark where it joins the wider Arelion pan-European network. It also includes two new PoP locations, in Bulk Fiber Networks' OS-IX DC in Oslo and Bulks Fiber Networks' N01 DC in Kristiansand. The new route doubles available capacity in the region, and will support new data center infrastructure, ensuring future traffic needs can be met for years to come. 

Arelion (then Telia Carrier) was awarded the contract to build a new subterranean Internet route for Norway by the Norwegian Communications Authority in July 2020. The project goal was to provide greater resilience in the event a serious incident impacting connectivity, and ensuring the future connectivity needs of the region could be met.

Elise K. Lindeberg, Director, Security Department at the Norwegian Communications Authority, said, "This new secure route for electronic communications, which was awarded to Arelion, will help Norway address its growing and diverse traffic needs to Europe and provide increased connection security for our nation, in the event of serious incidents occurring."

Services available through Arelion on the new route include IP, Wavelength and Ethernet offerings, making sure that customers can access state-of-the-art secure connectivity to the European continent that will meet the needs of all cloud providers, data centers and enterprises.  One section of the new route employs the HAVSIL subsea cable, that was built by Bulk Fiber Networks.

Gold Data partners with Arelion for Latin American coverage

Gold Data, a leading Latin American network provider, is working with Arelion to expand its reach and service portfolio throughout Latin America including customers in Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, Dominican Republic and Costa Rica.

Arelion brings 800G capacity to 1623 Farnam data center in Omaha

Arelion, the newly rebranded Telia Carrier, has upgraded its network capacity and capabilities at 1623 Farnam's interconnected edge data center in Omaha, Nebraska. 

The network expansion also enables access to Arelion's new multi-terabit optical fiber route, which delivers high-capacity bandwidth from Chicago to Denver and leverages Infinera's ICE6 800G coherent transponder technology. 

The new route utilizes transponder systems with coherent lasers and detectors capable of transmitting 800G waves across the system, which can be broken down into smaller bandwidth interfaces such as 400G, 100G, and 10G according to customer capacity requirements.

Telia Carrier's new name is Arelion

Telia Carrier, which operates the leading global Internet backbone, AS1299, has adopted a new name and brand -- Arelion.

The rebranding comes roughly a year after Polhem Infra, a private investment firm based in Sweden, acquired Telia Carrier from the Telia Company for SEK 9,450 million (US$1.055 billion). The business became a fully-independent company in June 2021.

Arelion's mission is to provide premium global connectivity services to the world's largest operators, content providers and enterprises. Its network spans Europe, North America, and Asia, with more than 70,000 km of optical fiber and 1,700 MPLS endpoints, connecting customers in 125 countries. The AS1299 backbone powers nearly 65 percent of all Internet routes.
