FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski has asked the U.S. Congress to extend the deadline by one month for it to present a National Broadband Plan. Genachowski said more time was needed to gather input from key stakeholders and to more fully brief Commissioners and House and Senate Committees on aspects of the plan. Genachowski requested a final plan submission date of March 17, 2010.

- In December 2009, the FCC published an interim National Broadband Plan report focused on policy recommendations in ten key areas: Universal Service, infrastructure access, spectrum, Tribal lands, set-top boxes, consumer information, media, adoption of broadband, accessibility for people with disabilities, and public safety. Other areas that are to be addressed by the plan, including education, energy, health care, civic participation and others, will be addressed further in January. The report included a framework of issues to be addressed.
