Yahoo! Acquires Zimbra for AJAX-based Messaging

Yahoo! agreed to acquire Zimbra, a developer of e-mail and collaboration software, for approximately $350 million.

Zimbra's offerings include rich, AJAX-based e-mail, calendar, and contact management features that can be used both on and offline.
The company has developed a set of "Zimlets" that tie in Web services to e-mail. Examples include providing updated shipping information inside an email, travel data, or being able to add all participants in a mail conversation to your address book at once.

Yahoo! said the acquisition helps it to expand its presence in universities, businesses and through ISPs by enabling organizations to host e-mail on or off premises with their own domain.

Yahoo! also noted that its own Mail service, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, currently has 250 million users worldwide.
