City of Provo Votes to Approve Public FTTH Project

The Provo Municipal Council voted 6 to 1 to authorize the issuance of $39.5 million in bonds to build iProvo, a city-wide fiber-to-the-home project. iProvo is following a public/private partnership model in which the city will build and operate the basic fiber network infrastructure, which will then to be leased by private companies who will provide the retail voice, data and video services.

Comcast, Qwest and the Utah Taxpayers Association had opposed the municipal project. http://www.telecomchoices.org
