Avici Offers Multi-Service Line Cards based on Network Processor Architecture

Avici Systems introduced a new series of multi-service line cards for its routing platforms. The MSC Multi-Service Connect cards offer "ASAP Any Service Any Port" software configurability to provide ATM, Frame Relay, POS/PPP and MPLS interfaces on the same card. The MSC line is based on Intel IXP2400 network processors and Avici's routing software. Previously, all Avici line cards utilized custom ASICs. The new line cards can be used with Avici's existing routing platforms. Avici says that the cards offer up to six times the density of alternative fixed-configuration solutions and provide the next level of PoP simplification by consolidating multiple network elements. Avici is offering three port density choices in its new MSC line card family: 8 Port OC-12c/STM-4; 16 Port OC-3c/STM-1; and Hybrid 4 Port OC-12c/STM-4 plus 8 Port OC-3c/STM-1.
