IEEE Targets Network-Adaptive QoE Standard -- P1907.1

The IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) Standards Board has approved work to begin on IEEE P1907.1 – Standard for Network-Adaptive Quality of Experience (QoE) Management Scheme for Real-Time Mobile Video Communications.


The proposed standard would address the quality of mobile video communications. It would help network operators, application developers, service/content providers and end users to develop, deploy and utilize real-time collaborative services.


“The goal of IEEE P1907.1 is to help raise the bar for real-time mobile video communications, ultimately resulting in a richer and more satisfying end-user experience,�? said John Ralston, chair of the IEEE P1907.1 Working Group. “By tackling real-time video capture, transmission and monitoring of received video quality, IEEE P1907.1 is intended to facilitate a high-quality real-time mobile video user experience within the constraints of mobile devices and networks."

IBM Develops Behavioral Analytics for Enterprise Security

IBM introduced an analytics software called Security Role and Policy Modeler that recommends enterprise security controls based on employee behavior data. The analytics can flag abnormal behavior, inconsistencies in role access and expired user access.


"With the rise of cloud and mobile access, it's no surprise that identity management has become such a hot button to clients," said Marc van Zadelhoff, vice president strategy and product management, IBM Security Systems. "If an organization doesn't know who has access to their data, how can meet compliance regulations, let alone be secure? Today's news shows how IBM is applying its advanced intelligence to solve the most complex security issues."


IBM also noted that it set a new U.S. patent record in 2011, marking the 19th consecutive year that the company has led the annual list of patent recipients. IBM inventors earned a record 6,180 U.S. patents in 2011, including more than 100 security-related patents, adding to more than 3,000 patents in IBM's security portfolio. The 2011 patents granted include advances in identity intelligence for authenticating user identity when resetting passwords, verifying personal identity and detecting fingerprint spoofing.

Huawei Showcases LTE Devices at CES

At CES, Huawei showing a range of LTE devices, including its first LTE smartphone, the Huawei Ascend P1 lte. In addition, Huawei will showcase its latest LTE modem, the E3276, and its newest LTE router, the E5776. A total of nine Huawei LTE terminal devices are on display.


The Huawei Ascend P1 lte features a dual-core 1.5G processor paired with a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display.


The new LTE modem and the new LTE router support LTE Category 4, offering downlink data rates of up to 150 Mbps and uplink data rates of 50 Mbps -- an industry first, according to the company.


Huawei is also showcasing an LTE module as well as the world's first LTE TDD wireless broadband router, offering support for both LTE TDD and FDD, downlink data rates of up to 100 Mbps, and access for up to 32 WiFi devices and desktop computers through its Ethernet port.

Ericsson: 5 Billion Mobile Broadband Users by 2015

In a keynote appearance at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Ericsson CEO Hans Vestberg predicted that the number of mobile broadband users will reach 5 billion by 2015, up from 1 billion today. The number of mobile users just recently topped 6 billion in 2011.


Vestberg spoke about the network society and the potential of intelligent, real-time communication when devices begin to take real advantage of faster silicon, sensors, software and low-latency connectivity.


Vestberg also demonstrated a "capacitive coupling" technology that can be used to transfer bits from one device to another without using wireless signals and instead using the human body as a conduit.

Hawaii's Wavecom Deploys ADVA FSP 3000

Wavecom Solutions, a Hawaiian-based information and communications technology provider specializing in enterprise-level managed services and cloud-based solutions, has deployed ADVA Optical Networking's FSP 3000 DWDM platform. The installation eases fiber constraints, consolidates transport and service requirements, provides 10 Gbps network coverage and connects a geographically diverse area.

Britain's Virgin Media Doubles its Broadband Speeds -- Top Tier Hits 120 Mbps

Virgin Media is doubling the speeds of over four million of its broadband customers across the UK. The top speed tier will now offer downlinks of up to 120 Mbps.


The upgrade will begin rolling out in February 2012 and continue over the next 18 months.


Subscribers to Virgin Media’s current 10 Mbps, 20 Mbps, 30 Mbps and 50 Mbps services will see their speeds at least doubled, with 100Mb customers seeing a significant increase to 120 Mbps. These speeds will ensure customers get high quality access to the huge growth in new online services.

Moscow's MegaFon Picks NSN's Single RAN

Russia's MegaFon has selected Nokia Siemens Networks’ Single RAN platform to modernize its GSM network in the Moscow region. The upgrade platform will improve network performance, energy efficiency, and reduce capital and operating costs, as the carrier prepares for LTE. New Flexi Multiradio Base Stations will replace MegaFon’s existing radio access platforms, including UltraSite, MetroSite and Flexi EDGE base stations from Nokia Siemens Networks.

Lightower Deploys 100G Services with Ciena

Lightower Fiber Networks, which operates metro fiber networks in the Northeastern U.S., has launched 40G and 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) services as well as 100G managed wavelengths, to enterprise and service provider customers throughout its footprint.


Lightower's network spans more than 6,400 route miles of fiber providing access to over 2,800 buildings throughout New England, metro New York City, New Jersey, Long Island and the Hudson Valley.


Lightower’s new 100G solutions will leverage Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platform equipped with WaveLogic coherent optical processors to enable delivery of 100G managed wavelength services, and 40 GbE and 100 GbE traffic transported over 40G/100G wavelengths.

PCCW Global Upgrades Undersea Cable with Ciena's 100G

PCCW Global announced an upgrade to its subsea network using Ciena’s WaveLogic coherent optical 100G networking solutions.


The upgrade will occur on PCCW Global’s North Asia subsea routes, which span approximately 9,800 kilometers to connect Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan. Specifically, using Ciena’s WaveLogic coherent optical 100G networking processors, PCCW Global will light a ring of dark fibers on the RNAL Cable System so that it can support significantly more than its original design capacity.


In addition to the existing network monitoring system, Ciena’s intelligent submarine network solution will allow PCCW Global to actively monitor the health and performance of its existing wet plant, including optical repeaters from third-party vendors, while continuously optimizing traffic-carrying signals in real time to ensure optimal transmission performance is achieved. The Ciena Specialist Services team will work closely with PCCW Global for accurate and timely completion of the design and implementation of the cable capacity upgrade. Financial terms were not disclosed.




This will help PCCW Global meet growing demand from its wholesale and retail customers for high-bandwidth services and applications such as Internet, video and cloud computing, and better serve the many countries that it interconnects globally.

Following a rigorous selection procedure, PCCW Global will deploy Ciena platforms equipped with 100G submarine-cable-grade coherent line interfaces, which are designed to significantly and cost-effectively increase submarine cable network capacity without disrupting existing customer traffic or adding cost or complexity to the network.

Planning Underway for Arctic Fibre Undersea Cable Network

AP Telecom, a facilities-based telecom consulting company, has been engaged Arctic Fibre to serve as overall International Sales Manager in the creation of a new submarine cable system joining Northern Asia and Japan to the United States, Canada and Northern Europe.


The proposed Arctic Fibre cable will contain four fibre pairs, each capable of transmitting 80 wavelengths and initial speeds of 40 Gbps, with provision to upgrade to 100 Gbps. The 15,600 km route would pass through Canada's Northwest Passage.


AP Telecom calculates that transiting the Northwest Passage will create the fastest route between Tokyo and London with a latency of 168 milliseconds. The Tokyo to New York latency is estimated at a very competitive rate of 171 milliseconds.


The planned route will also require passing across Greenland's iceberg alley. This will be done at water depths varying from 600-3,000 meters, well below the reach of any iceberg keel.

Organizers are looking to Canadian financial institutions, as well as a limited number of international carriers, to invest in the project.http://

Brocade Delivers 100GigE 2-Port 100 GbE Blade to CERN

Brocade has now delivered over 100 of its two-port 100GbE blades to CERN, the European particle physics laboratory.


CERN’s demanding environment exceeds 15 petabytes or 15 million gigabytes of data traffic per year. To put this number in perspective, 15 petabytes is equivalent to approximately 200 years of continuously running HD-quality video.


“We first selected the Brocade MLXe routers one year ago because it was a perfect fit for our stringent networking requirements in the near-and-long term (we test products to destruction); now that we are ready for 100 GbE, it was a simple line card addition to multiply our network performance,�? said Jean-Michel Jouanigot, Communication Systems Group Leader, IT Department, at CERN. “I do not see our appetite for data waning in the future, so with the addition of the Brocade MLXe with 100 GbE in our environment, I am confident we have a blueprint for success.�?

AppliedMicro Delivers Embedded Processor for 802.11ac Wireless Access Points

AppliedMicro introduced its new Catalina APM86491 embedded System-on-a-Chip (SoC) processor for next generation IEEE 802.11ac wireless access points with an enterprise-class QoS engine, TCP offload engines, a 4 Gbps packet classification engine and application aware offloads. These advanced capabilities will be essential in supporting the new class of all-in-one home appliances that serve as a router, wireless access point and networked storage drive.


Catalina’s highly integrated design supports a variety of high speed interfaces within the device. Two PCI-Express 2.0 interfaces support dual concurrent 802.11ac radio devices; two SATA interfaces support internal storage connectivity and two USB 3.0 ports - one host and one OTG - provide external storage connectivity. Additionally, four Gigabit Ethernet ports are available for a variety of network configurations.


AppliedMicro said this combination enables next generation 802.11ac wireless access points to be integrated into all-in-one network appliances. Catalina APM86491 is the industry’s first embedded processor equipped to handle the bandwidth requirements of this new class of consumer home network systems.


AppliedMicro also offers the industry’s first integrated software programmable co-processor within the APM86491 Catalina SoC for application specific customizable offloads. Performance is also provided by Catalina’s 1 GHz Power Architecture 465 CPU featuring a dual issue, out-of-order processor core. Catalina features an advanced hardware-based QoS engine with support for DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) for prioritization of real-time and latency sensitive traffic. The SoC leverages its queue manager and classifier to perform bandwidth management with 256 queues, 1024 search filters, and 128 traffic policers and shapers. This provides a richer video experience while voice and web traffic remain unaffected by multiple simultaneous streams and applications.


Catalina provides 64-byte L2 bridging performance with a classifier offload equal to 762Mbps, delivers 100 percent Ethernet line rate performance with no CPU utilization. IP forwarding 64-byte performance with classifier offload delivers 621Mbps at 100 percent CPU utilization. IP forwarding 1500-byte performance with classifier offload delivers 986Mbps at zero percent CPU utilization. Catalina’s Robocopy NAS writes equal 110 Megabytes per second (MBps) at 80 percent CPU utilization. Iometer NAS writes are 110 MBps at 35 percent CPU utilization and Iometer NAS reads are 108 MBps at 40 percent CPU utilization.

Taoglas Brings LTE Antenna to Verizon LTE Innovation Center

Verizon Wireless is showcasing a new LTE antenna from Taoglas, which specializes in external, embedded and base station antenna solutions for M2M applications. Taoglas' LTE antenna will be featured in two remote-presence solutions: VGo's all-in-one robotic telepresence solution and also InTouch Health's monitors and tablets for remote-presence telemedicine.


The Taoglas "Viking" antenna is a septa-band, surface mount antenna (SMT) covering all worldwide cellular bands from 700 MHz to 960 MHz and 1710 MHz to 2170 MHz for GSM, CDMA, WCDMA, DCS, PCS, UMTS, HSDPA, GPRS, EDGE and LTE.
The company says its design delivers efficiency of over 65% while being significantly smaller than current market wide-band antennas.


Taoglas is a Verizon LTE Innovation Center participant, providing antenna and RF testing and design expertise to Verizon's machine-to-machine (M2M) LTE device manufacturers.

T-Mobile USA Continues HSPA+ Expansion

T-Mobile USA announced the continued expansion of its HSPA+ network and the coming availability of the Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G smartphone and the Nokia Lumia 710 Windows phone. T-Mobile has doubled the speed of its 4G network in 12 additional markets, offering faster 4G (HSPA+ 42) to 184 million Americans in 175 markets. In addition, T-Mobile expanded the reach of its nationwide 4G (HSPA+ 21) network to nine additional markets, now covering 217 markets across the country and reaching more than 200 million people.


T-Mobile USA noted that the AT&T breakup concessions give it valuable spectrum. T-Mobile will receive, pending regulatory approval, a large package of AWS mobile spectrum in 128 Cellular Market Areas (CMAs), including 12 of the top 20 markets.


"Our 4G network is better than ever heading into 2012," said Neville Ray, chief technology officer, T-Mobile USA. "HSPA+ will continue to deliver a competitive mobile broadband experience for our customers in the coming years as we evaluate our options for continued investment and evolution of our 4G network."

Corning Gorilla Glass 2 is 20% Thinner

Corning unveiled its Gorilla Glass 2 delivering a 20 percent reduction in glass thickness while maintaining damage resistance, toughness, and scratch resistance for a mobile devices, tablets and other consumer devices/appliances.


Corning says its thinner Gorilla Glass 2 enables slimmer and sleeker devices, brighter images, and greater touch sensitivity. Product qualification and design implementation are underway.


Corning Gorilla Glass is expected to reach more than $700 million in 2011 sales, nearly triple 2010 results.

Qualcomm and Microsoft Target LTE + Windows 8

At CES, Qualcomm is collaborating with Microsoft to demonstrate pre-release Windows 8 on Snapdragon S4 processors with LTE. The demo uses the AT&T 4G LTE network.


Snapdragon-enabled Windows 8 PCs, including tablets, convertibles and notebooks, will also be enhanced by Qualcomm's mobile Internet connectivity platform, Gobi, which provides advanced 3G/4G connectivity and integrated LTE world mode support. Qualcomm's Gobi 4000 platform allows device manufacturers to offer both LTE/HSPA+ and LTE/EV-DO.

BridgeWave Secures $10.3 Million for 4G Millimeter Wave Backhaul

BridgeWave Communications, which supplies 4G millimeter wave backhaul solutions, has secured an additional $10.3 million in financing to support accelerating growth in the backhaul for network deployments. The round was led by Intel Capital and Morgan Creek Capital Management, with full participation from existing investors Core Capital Partners and Cipio Partners.

NEC Carries 1.15 Tbps Superchannel over 10,000km

NEC Corporation (NEC) announced a successful experimental demonstration of 1.15-Tbps ultra-long haul optical transmission over 10,000 kilometers using optical superchannel technology.


The terabit/s channel generated was generated from a single laser source. NEC's test transmitted four of these superchannels using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) to achieve a total capacity of 4 Tbps and a spectral efficiency of 3.6 b/s/Hz.


Optical superchannels allow phase-locked carriers with independent modulation to overlap in frequency following the principles of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). This enables efficient bandwidth utilization, allowing higher spectral efficiency and higher data rate per laser through parallelization.


NEC said these results demonstrate that practical high-capacity transmission for transoceanic communication can be achieved using superchannel technology. Its system leverages optical multi-tone generation, large-core/ultra low-loss fiber, intradyne digital coherent detection, and digital equalization at higher oversampling, along with well-established technologies such as EDFAs and DP-QPSK modulation. The experiment yielded a 2-dB system margin above the hard decision FEC threshold without using processing-intensive MAP or MLSE algorithms.


"This success is another example of NEC's continuing leadership in high capacity, long distance optical communication technologies, following its record achievements of 101.7 Tb/s per fiber for single core fiber transmission, the first terabit field trial with coexisting 100G, 450G and 1T signals on the same fiber, and the highest order QAM optical transmission of 1024QAM" confirmed Dr. Yasuhiro Aoki, General Manager for NEC's Submarine Network business.
