University of Twente studies quantum properties in optical chip

Researchers at the University of Twente used photons in an optical chip to demonstrate how quantum mechanics and thermodynamics can be true simultaneously. 

The results, which were recently published in the scientific journal Nature Communications, examined the properties of photons as they passed through entangled channels within an optical chip.

Thales: Security risks in the dynamic multicloud landscape

More than a third (39%) of businesses have experienced a data breach in their cloud environment last year, an increase on the 35% reported in 2022, according to the 2023 Thales Cloud Security Study.

Some highlights: 

  • Three quarters (75%) of businesses said that more than 40% of data stored in the cloud is classified as sensitive, compared to 49% of businesses this time last year.
  • More than a third (38%) ranked Software as a Service (SaaS) applications as the leading target for hackers, closely followed by cloud-based storage (36%).
  • Only a fifth (22%) of IT professionals reported that more than 60% of their sensitive data in the cloud is encrypted. According to the findings, on average, only 45% of cloud data is currently encrypted.
  • Only 14% of those surveyed stating that they controlled all of the keys to their encrypted data in their cloud environments. 
  • Almost two thirds (62%) say they have five or more key management systems – creating increased complexity when securing sensitive data.
  • More than three quarters (79%) of organisations having more than one cloud provider.
  •  In 2021, 16% of respondents reported their enterprises utilising 51-100 different SaaS applications, while in 2023 this percentage increased to 22%.
  • More than half (55%) expressed that managing data in the cloud is more complex than in on-premises environments – up from 46% compared to the previous year. 
  • Eighty three percent expressed concerns over data sovereignty, and 55% agreed that data privacy and compliance in the cloud has become more difficult.
  • The adoption of robust multi-factor authentication (MFA) has risen to 65%, indicating progress in fortifying access controls.
  • Only 41% of organisations have implemented zero trust controls in their cloud infrastructure, and an even smaller percentage (38%) utilises such controls within their cloud networks.

Telstra to offer voice-only and voice plus broadband by Starlink

Telstra will  become the first provider in the world to offer voice-only and voice plus broadband powered by Starlink to rural and remote Telstra customers in Australia. Under the agreement, Telstra will also provide connectivity options for our business customers in Australia and overseas, as a higher bandwidth business grade option in areas without fixed and mobile connectivity. Launch is expected later this year.

Nokia and Apple sign long-term patent license agreement

Nokia signed a new patent cross-license agreement with Apple which will replace the current license that is due to expire at the end of 2023. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Nokia said it expects to recognize the revenue related to this new patent license agreement starting in January 2024.

Jenni Lukander, President of Nokia Technologies, said: “We are delighted to have concluded a long-term patent license agreement with Apple on an amicable basis. The agreement reflects the strength of Nokia’s patent portfolio, decades-long investments in R&D, and contributions to cellular standards and other technologies.”

Coherent appoints Dr Young-Kai Chen as Deputy CTO

Coherent appointed Dr. Young-Kai (Y.K.) Chen as Deputy Chief Technology Officer (DCTO), reporting to CTO Dr. Julie Sheridan Eng.

Prior to being named DCTO, Dr. Chen was Chief Scientist in Coherent’s New Ventures and Wide-Bandgap Electronics Technologies group. Before joining Coherent in 2021, he was a program manager at DARPA, where he initiated and managed programs in advanced semiconductor electronics, secured communications, and artificial intelligence and machine learning processing. Dr. Chen was previously a senior director at Nokia Bell Labs, responsible for advanced research and technology development in high-speed electronics and optoelectronics including integrated lasers, silicon photonics, coherent optical data links, and wireless backhaul transceivers.

Dr. Chen received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in Electrical Engineering. He is a Fellow of Bell Labs, IEEE, and Optica (OSA); a member of the National Academy of Engineering; and recipient of the prestigious IEEE David Sarnoff Award and the Edison Patent Award. He has authored or co-authored three book chapters and over 190 journal articles, and holds 33 U.S. patents.

Ericsson consolidates manufacturing and tech hubs in Estonia

Ericsson will consolidate all of its operations in Estonia into a single, state-of-the art, 50,000 sq m smart hub that comprises test labs, warehouses, production lines, and offices.  The company currently has more than 2,200 employees in Estonia. Its existing factory plays a strategic role in Ericsson’s global supply footprint, accounting for more than 40 percent of the industrialization of Ericsson 5G products.

The new smart manufacturing and technology hub in Ülemiste City in Tallinn represents a  green field investment of about EUR 155 million (US$169 million). The facility is expected to be operational in early 2026.

Medusa subsea cable construction contract in effect with ASN

Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) and Elettra Tlc were awarded the construction contract for the Medusa Submarine Cable System. 

The Medusa subsea cable will link Morocco, Portugal, Spain, France, Algeria, Tunisia, Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Egypt. The subsystem named Via Tunisia, part of the Medusa Cable, linking France and Tunisia, is cofounded by the European Union under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program, as already announced by Orange.

At over 8,700 km in length, Medusa will be the longest cable in the Mediterranean Sea and providing enhanced North-South and East-West connectivity. The system will use state of- the-art 24-pair fiber optic Open Cable technology to meet increasing broadband requirements in the region, with 20Tb/s minimum capacity per fiber pair.

Elettra Tlc will promptly engage survey operations, while equipment manufacturing and installation are planned to span over 2024 and 2025. Orange will provide landing infrastructures in France, Tunisia and Morocco.

The construction of Medusa is funded by AFR-IX Telecom, Orange and the European Union though CEF (Connecting Europe Facilities) grants.

Hughes readies massive JUPITER 3 satellite for launch

Hughes Network Systems’ next gen JUPITER 3 ultra high-density satellite arrived in Cape Canaveral, Florida via an Antonov aircraft. Launch is scheduled onboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.

JUPITER 3, also known as EchoStar XXIV, is the largest commercial satellite to date.  From geosynchronous orbit at 95° West longitude, it will provide connectivity across North and South America at speeds up to 100 Mbps. Hughes plans to offer a hybrid service that leverages multipath technology to seamlessly blend satellite and wireless technologies for a faster and more responsive service than traditional satellite internet.

JUPITER 3 is equipped with 300 spot beams. Each beam carries 500 MHz or more, providing more than 1 Gbps to the VSAT users in each cell. It uses Ka-band, Q- and V-band for gateways. Hughes has 18 active gateways, each of whih transmits 11 GHz of V-band and Ka band and receives 4 GHz in Q-band.

DataBank to sell its five data centers in France to Etix Everywhere

DataBank will sell its five data centers in France (operating as "zColo France SAS") to Etix Everywhere, an operator with edge data centers in France and Belgium. Financial terms were not disclosed.

DataBank initially acquired the French data centers as part of the zColo transaction in 2020.

"This transaction allows DataBank to focus capital and resources on our core U.S. market," said Raul Martynek, DataBank's CEO. "With a remaining portfolio of 65+ data centers in more than 27+ markets, we remain the leading-edge data center provider in the U.S. with more facilities in more markets than any other provider, public or private." 

ETIX Everywhere is focused on Europe and South-East Asia, with 10 data centers live and more than 400 customers.

Amazon Web Services activated a new AWS Direct Connect location within the PLDT Vitro Makati 2 data center in Manila, Philippines. 

The new Manila location offers dedicated 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps connections, with MACsec encryption available for 10 Gbps. This new Direct Connect location reaches resources running in the Manila AWS Local Zone—supporting applications that require extremely low latency or local data processing.

Swisscom connects Ericsson Radio Dots over 10km fiber

Swisscom is using the Ericsson Radio Dot System to offer indoor 5G to enterprise customers within a 10 km radius, from one centralized location.

A new feature enables Swisscom to use fiber and hybrid fiber cables to deliver power and data to active indoor antennas (Radio Dots) from the Indoor Radio Unit (IRU) and extend cable reach from 300 m to 10 km. The extended cable reach that comes with fiber-based rollouts supports more flexible deployment options, including remote IRU placement in instances where it may be difficult or expensive to keep equipment locally on premises. 

The first fiber deployment was made in a Swisscom store near Bern, Switzerland. A Radio Dot was connected to a shared IRU hundreds of meters away in a central office using existing fiber infrastructure.

Ericsson milestone: 10 million 5G-ready radios shipped

Ericsson noted a significant company milestone: the shipment of its 10 millionth 5G-ready radio worldwide. 

Ericsson estimates that about 50 percent of 5G traffic outside of China runs on its networks. Currently, 147 live 5G networks are powered by Ericsson, of which 25 are 5G Standalone.

Nokia extends mmWave 5G at 2 Gbps over 11 km

Nokia achieved sustained average downlink speeds of over 2 Gbps using millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum and 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), over a distance of 10.86 kilometers. 

The test, which was carried out at the OuluZone test facility in Oulu, Finland, used Nokia’s AirScale baseband and AirScale 24GHz (n258 band) mmWave radio and a Nokia FastMile 5G PoC CPE (customer premises equipment). Testing involved eight component carriers (8CC) in the downlink, aggregating 800MHz of mmWave spectrum. This enabled a top downlink speed of 2.1 Gbps, and an uplink speed of 57.2 Mbps.

Nokia to adopt Red Hat as primary cloud for core apps

Nokia will tightly integrate its core network applications with Red Hat OpenStack Platform and Red Hat OpenShift. 

Under a new partnership, the companies agreed to jointly support and evolve existing Nokia Container Services (NCS) and Nokia CloudBand Infrastructure Software (CBIS) customers while developing a path for customers to migrate to Red Hat’s platforms over time. Additionally, Nokia will leverage Red Hat’s infrastructure platforms to enable faster development and testing of Nokia’s extensive core network portfolio.

Nokia Container Services (NCS) is ready to use, pre-integrated, and based on open source toolsets and software services, including Kubernetes. Designed for communication service providers (CSPs), it enables deploying and managing cloud-native applications, whether inside a virtual machine (VM) or bare metal (BM).
CloudBand Infrastructure Software (CBIS) is a ready-to-use, open source-based virtual infrastructure that provides serviceability, operability and universal applicability for OpenStack virtual machines, with a highly available, more secure and protected solution that is designed to be simple to use and easily upgradeable.

Highlights of the agreement:

  • Nokia will adopt Red Hat as its primary cloud infrastructure platform to develop, test and deliver Nokia’s core network applications;
  • Nokia will continue to support its core network applications on the Nokia NCS and CBIS platform offerings;
  • Nokia’s core network applications will be tightly integrated with Red Hat OpenStack Platform and Red Hat OpenShift, the leading hybrid cloud application platform powered by Kubernetes;
  • Nokia will certify Nokia’s core network cloud-native network functions (CNFs) and virtualized network functions (VNFs) on Red Hat OpenShift and Red Hat OpenStack Platform with customer deployment options on bare-metal, virtualized and public cloud telco infrastructure offerings, including those from Amazon Web Services, Google, Microsoft and others.

Huawei looks to 5.5G commercialization in 2024

At this week's MWC Shanghai 2023, Huawei announced plans to launch commercial 5.5G network equipment in 2024, supporting downlinks for 10G.

Huawei said its new 5.5G gear will protect operators' previous investment in 5G, while also improving network performance by 10 times. 

The company says it has made significant progress 5.5G verification process, specifically for extremely large antenna array (ELAA) which underpins 10 Gbps downlinks, flexible spectrum access which helps realize gigabit uplink, and passive IoT which can enable 100 billion IoT connections. 50G PON is another key technology that can enable 10 gigabit speeds for F5.5G ultra-broadband networks, and is expected to be extensively used in homes, campuses, and productions in the future. Huawei has worked with over 30 operators around the world on technological verification and application pilots for these technologies.

Huawei's Director and President of ICT Products & Solutions Yang Chaobin states "With a clearly defined standardization schedule, the 5.5G Era is already poised for technological and commercial verification. In 2024, Huawei will launch a complete set of commercial 5.5G network equipment to be prepared for the commercial deployment of 5.5G. Nokia intros 5G FWA receiver for subscriber homes

Nokia introduced a Fixed Wireless Access receiver for the North American market that uses a high gain antenna to deliver high speeds over long distances. The FastMile 5G receiver, which mounts to the outside of a subscriber's home, supports a broad range of 4G and 5G bands including CBRS in either 4G or 5G as well as c-band. It also supports up to 4CA NR carrier aggregation meaning operators can bundle bands for higher throughput. The outside receiver is teamed with an inside Wi-Fi router, such as Nokia’s Beacon G6.2 which has managed mesh Wi-Fi capability to deliver strong signals throughout the home.

Keysight supports O-RAN Spring 2023 Global PlugFest

Keysight Technologies collaborated with 14 industry partners to demonstrate Open RAN deployment readiness testing at the O-RAN Spring 2023 Global PlugFest organized by the O-RAN ALLIANCE.

During PlugFest, Keysight Open RAN Architect (KORA) solutions were used with Keysight co-developed O-RAN test specifications across these focus areas:

  • Open RAN Radio Unit (O-RU) Fronthaul Conformance / Performance – Conducted automated testing of O-RU compliance to WG4 fronthaul technical specifications using the Keysight O-RU test suite, including control, user, synchronization and management (CUSM) planes and performance across the radio frequency (RF) and protocol measurements domains. Test collaborators included Compal, ETRI, Inventec, Pegatron, and SOLiD.
  • RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) Conformance – Used the cloud-native Keysight RIC Test Suite to test and validate near-real-time RIC and non-real-time RIC compliance to the WG2 A1, WG3 E2, and O1 technical specifications by emulating E2 nodes, near-real-time RIC, and user equipment (UE). Test collaborators included Compal, ITRI, LITEON, and Pegatron.
  • End-to-End (E2E) Network Performance – Provided E2E testing and assessment of small cells, macro cells, and gNodeBs (gNB) for performance, security, latency under, load and stress test conditions using the Keysight E2E test suite. An over-the-air (OTA) monitor was used to extend real-time visibility to disaggregated radio access, correlation, and interaction between O-RAN protocol and 3GPP physical layers in wireless transmissions. Test collaborators included Askey, Compal, LIONS Technology, Pegatron, SageRAN, SOLiD, and Quanta Cloud Technology (QCT).
  • 5G and O-RAN Security – Validated the design and implementation of security for O-RAN gNBs with simultaneous operations of emulated UEs and security attack modules (3GPP SCAS automated testing, DDoS, Fuzzing) using the Keysight 5G and O-RAN security test suite. Tests ensured that the experience of emulated subscribers and network performance were not adversely impacted during simulated attacks. Test collaborators included LITEON and Pegatron.
